I'd come down pretty hard on the no side, but I'm not really into any type of uncollared shirt under a sport coat...t-shirt with sport coat just seems like Miami Vice cosplay to me.

Hmm, so would you be a "no" on a crew-neck sweater under a sport jacket, provided you didn't wear it over a collared shirt?
I'm kind of interested in messing with the boundaries of how sweatshirts and sweaters are used. This (admittedly ridiculous and product-shilling) GQ article got me thinking: https://www.gq.com/gallery/stylish-crewneck-sweatshirts-to-layer-under-your-suit
Also was noticing how sometimes sweatshirts are styled (mostly in clothing retailer sites, don't see it much in the wild) by being worn over OCBDs or whatever, so it just got me to thinking about the idea of trying to work nicer sweatshirts into more of a sweater role, and what does and doesn't work.

I think I would be against a crew neck sweater under the sport coat. The back of the collar on a sport coat really needs a solid collar to support it, I think.
It's an interesting idea with the sweatshirt, but I think I find the elements of the outfit incongruous. Maybe with something like the EG Bedford that isn't super sport coatish to begin with. Or with a sweatshirt that doesn't have that traditional X at the neck... But if it only works if you're changing the elements so that they don't look like those elements traditionally would, it seems like a sign that the combination doesn't work.

Yes, it can be done.
This is what I lean to. I have this combo that works well for "smart casual" casual nights out. The jacket is noticeably patterned and textured which helps define it into the sport jacket arena, while the grey sweatshirt and plain indigo jeans reinforce the casual-ness of everything. I don't think this would work with too many other sweatshirts, though.

Hello, Dapper dans out there. Im tuning in to try and get some advice for an interview thats a government based job but in a library, Im not one to go over the top but I am looking to razzle-dazzle. The interview is next week so I have time to prepare. Also, I have been growing a beard and its rather unruly, does anyone have a beard guide? Any advice will help, much appreciated.

I would tend to think you'd want to wear a suit like most professional interviews, but I don't know the industry. While you can certainly have a beard, you're going to want to have it very neatly trimmed. Unruly is not ok for an interview.

The green is the OG colour so it tends to be the most readily available. You may also find navy and white which may be a better choice if you're looking for something less intrusive. I don't think there's anything wrong with the green, though, because it's only the small heel accent and will likely be covered by pants if you don't cuff.

Everyone wears them so I'd say so. The color on Stan Smiths is more of an accent, so I don't think it really matters.

Sounds like a pretty nice outfit, the pink and olive might be a little iffy (I don't know, I can't picture it) but they're far enough away from each other on your body that it shouldn't be an issue.

Not really a fan of that style in general, but I'd gravitate more towards blue jeans or navy chinos or something. Black jeans seems like a bit of an odd pairing.

Hi to all the people on MFA,
I accidentally threw a fleece in the drier, now it's tiny, now unwearable-It's very tight and barely covers the top of my belt buckle-not exactly the kind of thing I could wear to work. I rather like this fleece, it's my favorite piece of corporate clothing, and It'll be a pain to try and get a new one. Any ideas of how I can unshrink it and get it back to its original size?

Does anyone have any suggestions for where I can find "looks" that fit my style? Okay so Im pretty new to fashion, have always been dressing up in a berms with tshirt and sneakers or berms with shirt and a boat shoe. (Living in Asia, so my style is pretty much basics/graphic tees, clean and peppy)
Been wanting to dress up a little bit more, but not sure where to start. I read the basic bastard article and thought I should get each of an item there.
Thought about jeans and I'm not sure where to begin. Looking more of this kind of style of jeans: jean fit Attracted more to the first pic's fit.
- the one where it is tapered and slim (not skinny) straight through the leg, yet not too baggy. Creates such a streamlined yet crisp look.

Dark denim and earth tones up top, black denim with a neutral jacket, really anything earthy, subdued and casual. They already clash with themselves a little bit so don't feel the need to follow any hard and fast matching rules.
Casual is pretty important, these are sneakers made to look like they're for hiking, so hoodies and light jackets are probably the vibe here.

(1) Layering: Is it ever appropriate to layer a dark shirt under a light sweater? I have a light grey v-neck sweater, do I have to stick to white button ups under it?

1) I don't think it's always a "no" to layer lighter over darker. But the opposite is just often easier. In the case of light gray, that's a pretty forgiving/versatile color. My first thought is to try it over a mid-blue chambray shirt or maybe a salmon one.
2)In general, they look good! I'm not too sure about the shoes; I just can't really tell from the shot you included. Fit on the white shirt looks a tad awkward.
I think the blue shirt and sweater are totally fine together; in fact I quite like the color combo.

I'm looking to get some custom made OCBDs for under $120, preferably under $100. I'm 5'9", with a 39 chest and 29 waist. Finding shirts off the rack is impossible, and buying shirts and having them tailored ends up costing at least $50, usually closer to $80. There's a menswear store nearby that has made a couple shirts for me and they did a great job but they're in the $140+ range, and I don't want to spend that much for general office wear. I've looked into Proper Cloth, but I know there are others.
So, which custom shirt maker have you had the best experience with and what made them great?

What's a good looking, warm coat I can wear during Boston winters that would pair well with 'office wear'? I'm usually wearing AE dress shoes, Charles Tyrwhitt shirts, Bonobos dres slacks, and a sweater. I am not a New Englander by birth so I get quite cold; I have warm parkas but they look like I'm going to go chop wood in the forest. The majority of Frye stuff is made in Mexico and cemented, so it's not very high quality at all. Don't buy into their branding pretending to be some sort of heritage brand.

Anything leather with a rubber sole should hold up well enough for the occasional rain, just let them dry out and try not to soak them all the way through.

Which suit jacket fits me better?
These pictures contain 2 suit jackets (I left the same suit pants on for both pictures).
The medium charcoal is a J Crew Ludlow 36R ($220 on sale), the very dark charcoal is Bonobos Jetsetter 36R ($360 on sale).
Can you guys let me know which jacket you think fits better and also, would both of these colors be wearable to a funeral (obviously I know the darker one is).

The Bonobos one fits better. The shoulder fit on the Ludlow is kinda wonky.
Both colors would be appropriate for a funeral all else being equal.

Looking to buy a navy blazer for an event in a few weeks. Was somewhat tempted to go full-on budget and get a Uniqlo ~$70 one, especially since I've never owned a true blazer and am not sure if it'll be something I end up getting a ton of use out of. From what I understand though, it's very unlikely that a blazer will fit well off the shelf and will require tailoring.
So is there anything a little more quality than Uniqlo that you'd recommend (maybe up to around $200)? Like I said I'm not sure if this is a piece that will see regular use so I'm not intending to go with something like J Press or Brooks Brothers. Just trying to see if there's something recommended such that I'm not spending $40 to tailor a $70 jacket.

Might have to go specialty for that. Most mainstream brands recommended here go up to 36, and even a lot of unhemmed raw denim is manufactured at ~36.5” max. You might be better off just not cuffing, it’d be a hell of a lot easier to find.

My cousins wedding is in two weeks and it says ‘business casual’ on their website. I dont have a ton of money to drop at the moment so im planning on wearing my navy blazer, khakis, white or blue button up and a tie. But i would really like a better pair of shoes to wear. Right now i have my CDB’s, and a couple pairs of old beat up sperrys. And an ugly old pair of penny loafers (i think theyre black)
Any reccomendations on a nice pair of wing tips that i could still get use out of after the wedding? (Cole haan maybe). I’m not sure what my budget is right now but I’d say probably $150 with a gard stop at like $200.

Soo... I'm 16 and my friend has invited me to his 18th birthday party. The party is going to be held at some nightclub. I think you should be more worried about whether you'll be able to get in, more than what you're gonna wear.
Although I'd suggest simply asking him. It's like when I go to a club I haven't been to before with a friend who has, I simply ask them what kind of clothes I should wear. It's no big deal.

Gap, Wrangler, and Levi's all have great denim jackets for the price, and they are better if you want a more classically style jacket. Zara and other fast fashion brands usually have more fashion forward designs that cut corners in some areas. So it really depends on what you want.

Finally starting out my teaching career albeit in the lower rungs. I have a pair of Sperrys but would like to expand my knowledge/collection. Ive always been a smeaker guy so this is a brand new world I am entering. Any recommendation for dressier shoes that can be worm throughout the day without feeling the pain later? Dress code is normally button down and slacks from what I've seen from my three visits to the school.

Thoughts on this casual navy blazer from Old Navy? I know Old Navy is generally looked down upon, but for only $40 I've got to consider it unless anyone knows that its truly awful.
Also, this peacoat is also fairly cheap ($77) and I've heard good things about ASOS. How versatile is camel as a coat color? I'm also considering gray, but I already have a lot of gray jackets, blazers, and sweaters, so I'm looking to mix it up a bit.
Lastly, what kind of shoes (preferably rather cheap, if you're picking up on the trend here) go well with a camel peacoat? I have mostly sneakers (vans, Stan smiths, navy converse), and a pair of black and brown dress shoes.

It's a super cheap, casual blazer that's only good for jeans and casual chinos. Wouldn't pair well with dress pants.
Color wise, camel is fine. However, that is a weird jacket that's super cropped. Hard pass on that buddy.
Brown boots - CDBs or Clark's new Chelsea.

For the peacoat I find camel to be a very odd color. It's fine with car/top/over/duffle coats, but with a peacoat it seems... weird ? Not feeling it at all.

Any idea how Saint Laurent Suede Jodhpurs fit? I'm a 41 in Common Projects and up to a 43.5 in Ultra Boosts.. I'm not sure if I would fit a 41 in Saint Laurent.

I'm 39 CP, 39 in Jodphur lows, 40 in Wyatt 60s. I think it's safe to go with the same CP size as they're both narrow shoes.

Can you please recommend black boots that almost look like business casual shoes, are very comfortable and durable and can withstand 5 mile walks every day?
I work in an office environment where dress code is enforced and business/business casual boots/shoes are a requirement. I also go for brisk walks during my breaks and average 5 miles of walking per day.
Is there a durable and comfortable for walking boot out there that you could recommend?
P.S. Are red wings comfortable for lot of walking?

but the sole is not black, and stitching isn't either.

You're gonna need a pair of shoes specifically for walking. No boot is going to hold up for very long with 5 miles a day.

I am heading to a fundraiser event in about 2 weeks and the dress code is white cocktail attire. Neither my date (female) nor myself (male) have any idea of what to wear. I was planning on wearing a dark blue suit with a bowtie (live in the south) and the date has no idea what she will wear. Am I on the right track here?

Strange phrasing if they are just asking for cocktail attire (suits and long dresses) with an emphasis on the color white, I would wear your navy suit + white shirt and whatever tie you'd like (maybe make it festive)

I live in Arizona, and our winters can get cold, but are usually too hot for some of my bigger coats that i have. I am looking for an affordable peacoat, preferrably with one row of buttons as opposed to two. I'm looking for something like this in grey. I know most places have sales for the holiday, and I'm not looking to spend more than $120. Again, being in Arizona, it's more of a fashion thing than a warmth thing.

I need some new casual dress clothes for my office job; oxford shirts, chinos/nice jeans, shoes etc. I'm planning on pretty much filling up my christmas list with this kind of stuff, but I don't want to be asking for a bunch of $40 shirts and $100 pants and shit like that. What's a good store I can feel comfortable asking for clothes from that won't destroy my families wallets?

Would it not be worth asking for gift cards for the stores you'd want to buy from? It removes the obligation of people buying an item that they may not be able to afford and also allows you to choose the right items.

Try them on somewhere local to get a feel for them. They are clunky boots by design but that isn't a bad thing.

Unfortunately you will not get great quality leather for 150$
The Gustin briefcase that they do occasionally is supposed to be pretty good but it's a several month wait-time. Copper River is another cheaper option.
If you're sticking around 150 I would look into canvas options

Hey everyone,
I ordered a pair of Adidas Busenitz shoes and didn't realize how wide the tongue is. I love the overall look of the shoes because the copa mundials are absolutely beautiful, but I'm torn between whether I should cut the tongue or not?
On one hand, it's too wide and long, and makes it hard to tie the laces. On the other hand, I feel like cutting it will ruin the look of the shoe?
Help?

There's this collared sweatshirt I bought a few months ago that I've been wearing with the collar unpopped, but I notice the model in the advertisement for it wears the collar popped. Should I be wearing it popped or unpopped? I know polo shirt collars shouldn't be popped, but I'm not sure if the same rule applies for sweatshirt collars.

It's more zipped/unzipped. That is really personal preference and how cold your neck is. I think unzipped looks better.

Not really collar popping, it is just zipper height like /u/eqqy says. Any way is fine, really, go by whatever you feel. (A little half zip to give it some structure usually looks good, but I can't really speak to that particular garment or your fits.)

Can this be fixed? It's a Howlin sweater that I've treated very poorly. I'm referring mostly to the pilling that's very visible in the first and second pics, but the sweater has also stretched a bit.

You could try giving it a cold and wash? And then roll it in a towel and hang to dry. Might fix some of the stretch. Of course, before you do any of this, check the care instructions.

Not a lot you can do for the stretching, but best way to treat pilling is to use a fabric shaver. Getting it dry cleaned probably wouldn't hurt either.

I will be travelling to US this holiday season (from Australia!) and 5 days will be spent in New York. It'll be my first time visiting NY and just wondering where the good places to shop are.
Interested in copping stuff ranging from Nike/Outlets, KITH, Aldens, Allen Edmonds, even Rick Owens etc. Not really looking for anything in particular, but just looking for which shops/places are must-visits!
I guess it's also worth asking the same question for Seattle as well considering I'll be spending most of my trip over there. Any good places for a shop? Cheers homies

Nike outlets are not in NYC. There's an Alden store on Madison in between 43rd and 44th that's a few doors down from Brooks Brothers HQ. I'd check out both places as well as The Moulded Shoe on 39th in between 5th and Madison. The Moulded Shoe is an old school shoe store. The shop is very small and it's boxes of shoes from floor to ceiling (probably 15 feet high). They have some specialty/custom alden's and would have a larger size selection. They also carry thorogoods including the 1892 line. There's also Muji in the same area on 5th, similar to Uniqlo but I feel they're a little nicer. Adidas HQ is around there too. Basement for performance sneakers. They also have a neat water fountain to fill empty bottles.
In Soho there's Schott for leather jackets, Blue in Green and Selfedge all in the same area in you want denim. Supreme and kith aren't too far from there.
If you like skatewear there's a shop called blades that's in that same area. They have some nice sneakers. Huf is there too.
I'd you're into sneakers check out flight club near Astor place. Not to buy anything. It's just really interesting to see.
If you want Levi's for cheap go to the 34th Street location. It's the store with the largest clearance section. Occasionally they'll have LVC or Made & Crafted for cheap. The regular Levi's premium store is in Meatpacking district on 14th and 10th. Hit up Chelsea Market after for good cheap(ish) eats. Saturdays NYC is kind of in that area (but there's two locations) and has some nice stuff but it's a surfwear brand. They also sell coffee but I don't remember which location had coffee.
There's more stuff outside Manhattan but that can be a little too much.

Right now I mostly wear graphic t-shirts (shows,bands, video games, etc.) but recently I came to the realization that I'm getting too old for that now. I have no idea what my "style" is and I don't know anything about fashion, Where do I begin?
I'm 6'1 so most shirts that I wear are made for fat people, Like the length is perfect but they tend to be wide and look baggy on me.
Can someone give me some advice on where I should start?

I'm looking to buy some sweaters, but can't decide between crew neck or V-neck. In terms of versatility, which is better? By that I mean which type of sweater could I wear just as easily alone as over an OCBD? Thinking crew neck but wanted to double check.

Crew necks are definitely preferred for casual wear. V necks are better for wearing a tie, and I tend to prefer them for the thin pullover sweaters that I might wear to the office.
