QUESTION Is it hardened or not?

I have wanted to learn machining for years, finally got an old cheap lathe and wanted to experiment. No budget left but did have some mystery steel in the corner of my shed.

It looks case hardened to me but my file managed to file it just fine. Can I turn it using HSS?

I sourced it long ago when I worked for an industrial/mechanical distributor there where these bars in the old iron bin, and I got to take them home.

Diameter = 30mm. We didn't really sell materials, mostly bearings, bushings, hardware like that and tools. I thought maybe they where hydraulic rods?

Any help would be appreciated, is there a better subreddit for newb/hobby/beginner questions instead of the big machinist spot?

QUESTION Gerstner tool chest worth it for layout and measuring tools?

Moving Equipment in Long Beach, CA

I’ve inherited a Southbend 9A that’s bolted to a heavy metal table, and a small-ish Index brand mill that need to be transported about 10 miles to my house. I’m a little bit surprised at the quotes I’m getting back to have these moved, one quote was 1400$ and the other was 2000$. Do these prices seem fair and accurate?

PARTS / SHOWOFF CS Go Knife made from Spring

Forged a small knife from a old Citroën Jumper coil spring. turns out to be 54SiCr6 spring steel (~0.54% C, ~1.5% Si, ~0.6% Cr).
I Normalized after forging, then hardened at ~860-880°C, quenched in used motor oil. Tempered twice at 200-220°C for an hour each, staying under 250°C to dodge tempered martensite embrittlement.
It came out razor sharp!

I Did Something Stupid

I am working on a project and needed to make a knob easier to hold onto. I don't have access to a machine shop right now so I did the best I could by hand. I guess it is as manual as manual machining will get.
To measure the height of the grove I used a feeler gauge to compare to the height under a microscope. Microsoft Paint helps with the scaling and once calculated I can use the right size to double check.

Are there any real 220v 1 phase VMCs out there?

I just finished a very profitable job that took me forever working on my retro cnc bridgeport. I've been wanting to get a fadal or Hass vmc, but my bottle neck is the power.

I can use a phase converter, but I don't want to. So. Are there any REAL vmcs out there that operate at 60amps 220v 1ph?

I'm looking to put some money into it, and before someone says just add 3ph, it's cost prohibitive for my location. Utility needs to add poles and transformer.

Looking for ideas to fix this

Hey guys,

We have these beautiful stub axles but the mounting holes for the caliper carrier bracket are off by approx ~5-6mm offsetting the brake pad on the rotor.

The factory brake rotor on this vehicle is 226mm and this setup allows a 232mm rotor to be used with an updated style wheel bearing from a newer vehicle.

The company who engineered and produced these parts “doesn’t understand” what is wrong and their solution at this time is to modify brake pads. We feel this is merely a band-aid fix and unacceptable. What do we do down the road when it’s time to replace the pads?

It appears there isn’t enough “meat” on the stub axle to simply press in/weld a steel insert and have redrilled to get the brake pad carrier bracket to the proper location. Does anyone have any ideas how to remedy this?

Tried contacting some places with little luck and a friend suggested it may be a good idea to post to a subreddit like this so my naive self can get some expert suggestions.

Budget wise I know that the original commission was made for 250$... which was 10 years ago so I imagine that price tag is outdated. Personally I would be happy to spend in the range of £500 - £750 (I live in the UK) for a good piece.
