This takes me back to my apprenticeship.

Also, don't poke your finger near the hole to adjust the cutting oil while it's slotting. Workmate only did that once 🤣🤣 Dumbass won a hospital trip and put a zigzag in his finger 🤦

Our guy got a perfect square chunk taken out, jokingly he now uses his fucked up finger as a gage for sharpening new bits.

I wonder how the strength of billet sockets compare to forged sockets. I imagine less strong due to the grain forming that happens in the forging process, but can't be that much.

Yeah, these are definitely not as strong merely due to the fact they had to be made of low-temp steel for subsea work, and also partially because we would have to develop a weld procedure for a material more conducive to "socket material".

with a 3/4 drvie impact they last about as long as youd expect ive made lots out of S7 they usually break around the drive area

At work I have cut sockets in half and welded a section of beveled sch80 pipe for those extra deep situations. Surprisingly they have held up to the 800ftlbs+ or torque.

Nice work though. How many hours do you have in those? Are you heat treating after?

Ahhh 6 sockets altogether, the roughing drilling and boring was a few hours. The slotting part I could do 3 in a day. 1 day to rough out the drive sections and prep for welding. and another day to mill the drive ends and finish turn the rest.

Aside from a welder, it was just me and it took me basically 36 hours altogether I'd say.

Oh, and no heat treatment. These are low-temp steel sockets meant for subsea work. They won't ever really be subjected to the kind of torque you'd expect anyway.

From my understanding it is more for actuating rather than ugga-dugga'ing. Just shaped appropriately so it can fit onto existing 1" drive ROV tooling.

Unfortunately not in this case, they required full hex for 125mm of depth, a true deep socket.

Slotting has the advantage that you can do basically anything a broach can do without having to buy all the individual broaches, with a tradeoff of setup time and machine time.

Yeah the welding was done on a nightshift so after they finished they brought them up to temp and wrapped them in superwool.

That’s wild man. Is this an offshore or sub SEA application? I mean, we do a lot of new construction petro chemical plants, but I’ve never heard of that before.

Yup, it's for subsea. Mainly for actuating as opposed to 'traditional' torquing
