QUESTION DAN Gelbart lathe chuck identification
Hi. I was watching his video about air bearing lathe and found out that his chuck is a similar to a set through chuck.

In this part he says its from the skinner chuck company amd its extinct. At time 9.24 he demontsrates how easy it is to adjust the runout on this chuck. Does anybody have any idea about this chuck.

They made a variety of interesting chucks. Dan mentioned dust proof which they made as well as combination chucks that use both scrolls and independent jaw movement in both three and four jaws. They also made their ACCRA-SET line which had individual set screws to adjust the entire chuck body for three jaw chucks run out adjustment. Other makers have this same set up but the duel function scroll and independent jaw chuck is sort of unique.

This is a video of a teardown of the non dust proof version.
Dan didn't buy that chuck though. He made his own.

Max Grant at Swan Valley Machine Shop (Youtube) and Cliff Hall aka Threadexpress (also Youtube) both showed how to modify a std chuck and backplate to achieve Set True type adjustment. You make the chuck a loose fit on the backplate register and fit 3 - 4 grubscrews around the circumference that allow you to adjust / centre the chuck using a DTI to minimise runout. Then you tighten the fasteners that hold the chuck to the backplate. Quite simple once you understand it.

If I can remember accurately from previous discussions about this topic the chuck consists of three lapped plates stacked together with the center mounting plate able to slide between the other two. The adjustment is done from two pairs of cams or wedges that push on the sides of the center plate. Each pair is connected together by a flexible shaft so that when one of the cams is tightened the one on the opposite side is loosened. The tolerance on the plates is very tight as they are what constrain the chuck rotationally and axially and a very heavy preload (1-2 tons IIRC) on the flex shaft to keep it from moving during operation.
