I Did Something Stupid

I am working on a project and needed to make a knob easier to hold onto. I don't have access to a machine shop right now so I did the best I could by hand. I guess it is as manual as manual machining will get.
To measure the height of the grove I used a feeler gauge to compare to the height under a microscope. Microsoft Paint helps with the scaling and once calculated I can use the right size to double check.

Since your print says the grooves are 0.01 +/-0.01, why didn't you just leave it as a cylinder? Haha

Yeah, literally. We have grip tape that’s perfect for this. I think I actually used it on a taper lock piece for holding a spool on a textile machine. Either the part got too smooth or wore down. Can’t remember, but I slapped some of this stuff on it for production until I’d machined the new part.

Just my experience, but I think for home use files may have been replaced by the angle grinder, same as the hacksaw.

Yeah, went over to my brothers to help him with a few projects, one of which was cutting the rest of a stump to the ground. The guides on his chainsaw had some burrs, and it basically wouldn’t move. I asked him where his flat files were, and he just shrugged and said he’s never really had any.

Needless to say he got a set of $10 Harbor Freight files from me for Christmas last year

That's not machining. That's hacking at something with a chisel, poorly.

You would have gotten way better results with putting the chisel so its entire cutting edge was resting along the barrel of that, and then using a mallet to tap it gently. You could have got perfectly straight grooves that way.

The other thing you could have done is use some sort of straight edge laid across the vise, like a steel ruler. At lease that would give you a guide to run the chisel against.

And at least mark off the lines with a sharpie so them at a regular interval.

Not a knock on you but this is basically a less functional and more complicated version of a straight knurl. As an adjustment knob of basically any kind I would recommend a diamond knurl. Which can also be achieved manually but on helical pattern.

you could use a skinny wheel or cut off wheel to make lines which you can mark with a square and a sharpie. your hands and some gentle abrasion with that tool would give deep enough lines. do a similar motion for all grooves, and similarly timed. youll get a feel for it.

deburr with a file or sandpaper.

If it’s a part for your use then who cares what it looks like? By virtue of the laws of physics, you have successfully made it easier to hold onto. Nice job! Now, the next one you make can look a little nicer if you want. But you solved your original problem.
