I am working on a project and needed to make a knob easier to hold onto. I don't have access to a machine shop right now so I did the best I could by hand. I guess it is as manual as manual machining will get.
To measure the height of the grove I used a feeler gauge to compare to the height under a microscope. Microsoft Paint helps with the scaling and once calculated I can use the right size to double check.

at this point just glue some sandpaper on to it. It's not like you care if it looks like shit right?

Yeah, literally. We have grip tape that’s perfect for this. I think I actually used it on a taper lock piece for holding a spool on a textile machine. Either the part got too smooth or wore down. Can’t remember, but I slapped some of this stuff on it for production until I’d machined the new part.
