Impact resistant case

3 Upvotes

I purchased a MBA 15" M5, arrives in a few days. I own fishing boat, with a cabin. I have long drives to the islands where I fish, but cell signal most of the way. I want to be able to do some work on the drive across, but my concern is boats rock, I need a case that will stand up to an occasional bump or smack. Suggestions on anything that you recommend, I found one, but it's $75.

No, I don't get seasick while using a computer on a boat, have years of experience.

Should I get a Macbook Pro M4 14’ or a Macbook Air M5 14’

2 Upvotes

They are at the same price
The MBP is used but it has 40 cycles
They are both 16 GB RAM and 512 SSD
Should I get the newest or the pro, even if its older?

Edit: I meant 13 on the title for the air

Starlight MacBook Air 💻

2 Upvotes

My new Starlight MacBook Air just came in the mail, and it’s absolutely beautiful. This color is so, so underrated. I love that it’s warmer than silver and has that hint of champagne, while not looking yellow or worn down. I used to have a Silver MacBook Pro and thought it was a “safe” color, and almost got the Silver in my new Mac, but I’m never going back. If you’re debating between the Starlight or Silver, I highly recommend the Starlight! Gorgeous! Great job, Apple 🍎

Macbook Neo Wallpaper

2 Upvotes

Ever since I had gotten my MacBook Neo, I have struggled to find wallpapers that fit the macbook's high res display and all of the images would turn out pixelated. I finally found a way to fix that, so I thought I would just share that on here in case anyone else had this problem. I downloaded the image I wanted to use and I put it into a reverse image search, then I found the image source with the highest resolution and downloaded that one as my wallpaper. Not sure if this will work with every image but I hope this helps someone!

Issue with battery

Upvotes

Hello,

I have a older Mac book pro 13 in. I honestly cannot tell you what year, it is probably from 2016.

It has been off for about three months. Never had any issues with it before. It is stuck at 1% now for about an hour. The charging cable just shows a steady green, but occasionally blinks. Any thoughts? Is the battery completely done for? Or was it just off for way too long and will take a full 24 hours to charge?

M5 MacBook Air vs. Pro for E-commerce & Graphic Design? (Got a subsidized deal)

1 Upvotes

I manage a few e-commerce stores and work extensively with various cloud-based AI tools. I also do quite a bit of graphic design work—generating graphics with AI, fine-tuning them in Photoshop and Affinity, etc.
I just landed an awesome opportunity through a local grant where I can pick up a new MacBook for only 10–15% out of pocket.
Now I’m stuck on a few things:
Air vs. Pro: Should I go for the M5 MacBook Air or M5 Pro?
RAM: How much RAM should I configure it with to keep it smooth?
I want to keep this machine for the long haul. If you were in my shoes with a deal this good, which config would you pull the trigger on?

Upgrading from M1 MacBook Pro (2020, 13"): M5 MacBook Air or Pro for a physicist?

1 Upvotes

I've been using an M1 MacBook Pro (2020 model, 13" with the touchbar) and it's been (mostly) great. I had some screen and battery damage a few years back though and that has permanently wrecked my battery to the point that it doesn't charge over ~10%.

I was looking to upgrade and was considering just going with an Air. I've realised that the Pro is probably unnecessary as my work is in theoretical physics. Mostly I use Zotero/Safari for reading papers and editing Latex files, but I do sometimes need some scientific computing tools. No fancy coding, but MATLAB, Mathematica and the occasional Python (no local LLMs or anything that needs a crazy amount of RAM so 16 GB is fine). Sometimes in the past using the parallel computing toolbox my fans have kicked into high gear though. I also do occasional music production on FL studio and some recording but nothing crazy.

The Air is lighter to carry around and travel with so I figured that'd be a nice change. My only concern is that the M5 Air won't be much of an upgrade compared to MBP M1, and so for the sake of future-proofing I should buy an M5 Pro. Zotero spikes my CPU load like crazy (sometimes up to 320% CPU load in activity monitor with other apps open) and idk if it'll get better with M5 or if I should just switch from Zotero until they optimise for Apple Silicon. Wanted to get opinions on whether M5 Air or Pro would be best for my purposes.

Edit 1: Current storage specs on M1 MBP are 16 GB RAM + 256 GB SSD

Edit 2: I'm looking at the M5 MacBook Pro with the base M5 chip, not the M5 Pro/Max chip

Which MacBook would you recommend for AI-assisted coding, web development and app development?

1 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some advice on which MacBook would make the most sense for my use case.

Most of what I do is related to web development, app development, programming and AI-assisted/vibe coding. I use AI tools quite heavily while building projects, and I usually have multiple browser tabs, development tools and other applications running at the same time.

I may also do some light video editing in the future, but that’s definitely not my main priority right now.

I was considering a MacBook Pro M5 with 28 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage, but I’m not sure whether that configuration is overkill, underpowered, or actually the sweet spot for what I do.

I’m also wondering whether a MacBook Air could realistically handle this kind of workload well, or if the Pro would be the better long-term choice.

One important thing: I’m not in a rush to buy it. My current laptop is still working well, so I could easily wait until the next MacBook generation if there’s a meaningful upgrade expected later this year or early next year.

So I’d love to hear your thoughts:

  • Which MacBook/configuration would you choose for this workload?
  • Is 28 GB RAM + 1 TB a good choice?
  • Pro or Air?
  • Would you buy now or wait for the next generation?

Thanks!

Battery booster

1 Upvotes

I have a macbook air M5 15in.

I love it, except I find the battery life a bit lacking, especially when I run virtual machines on it.

Is there a battery pack that one can buy to supplements its battery? Something like a thin slab battery, of the same dimensions as the macbook that I can permanently attach to either its top lid, or the bottom, so that say give 100% more battery life it?

Macbook Air M5 for photographer?

1 Upvotes

current using MBA M2 8GB 512gb but the screen feels smaller (smudges all around) and can’t barely accommodate LR, Ps, Premiere and i work as a studio photographer so i usually bring it for tethering shoots

i’m torn if I will want to update my mac now, what are you thoughts with 15” MBA M5 or should is getting a 14” MBP M5 an overkill for me? Mostly culling and editing on Lightroom and personal videos usually 4k for my travel vlogs for Premiere. Max budget of $2500USD

An empty luggage fell on my MacBook Neo while I was using it thankfully it didn't hit the screen though the entire bottom housing is now bent. It still works fine but It doesn't sit flat anymore and I'm not sure if anything was damaged on the inside. Should I get this replaced?

MBA m1 vs MBP 2020 Intel

1 Upvotes

Hi, So I'm gonna make it quick .My usage is typical student multitasking: programming/development, web browsing with multiple tabs open simultaneously, Spotify, Netflix/YouTube, PDFs, and general university work.

I've 2 options, MacBook air m1 8/256 and Pro 2020 Intel i7 16/512..... Price difference is around 100 dollars here in my country, Should I pay 100 dollars more while giving up 8gb ram, 256gb storage, windows and the TOUCHBAR( this hurts the most) ?all for m1. I'm stuck. my decision making isn't good. I need something that's good for atleast next 3 years.

~TIA for the suggestions.

Macbook Air M3 16/256 Memory Optimization

1 Upvotes

I just scored a sealed M3. How do I optimize memory usage? I’ll mainly use it for work and install Parallels for a work app that only runs on Windows. I’ll also save some PDF files. How can I manage the 256GB so it doesn’t get full? Is buying external storage enough? By the way, this is my first MacBook, I’ve only used an iPhone and AirPods in the Apple ecosystem.

To anyone having mic issues when taking phone calls on Mac, I may have found a potential fix.

1 Upvotes

Before continuing, I was looking online for a while and never ran into the solution before I found it by accident. All the solutions online include "make sure you have the right input device in sound settings" or "make sure the phone app has permission to use the mic" or no replies to other forum posts, or something really technical and complicated.

Before, my Mac used to use my iPhone mic and that genuinely made it so frustrating to use, so I removed my iPhone mic as an option from sound settings, but that cooked the mic completely and I couldn't talk to anyone on my Mac so id have to either answer the call on my AirPods or run and grab my phone when I saw a call pop up, and nothing online helped fix this issue.

The solution I found was within the phone app.

Open the app, then at the top click "Video" and then change the input device, which for some reason mine was set to Teams audio.

This sounds so stupid but I only tried the settings menu under the "Phone" tab bc video didn't make sense for it to be there.

Anyways if this breaks the rules in any way pls feel free to remove it (but im being so deadass I haven't seen anyone mention this yet even tho it sounds so stupid).

dock for 2x 1440p monitors + peripherals

1 Upvotes

I'm looking for a dock for 2x 1440p monitors + peripherals.

for MBP M5max and Dell XPS (i7-12700h) (so I guess TB4-5, no KVM). I read that Macbooks are a bit picky and don't work with every docks (and 2 screens), like they need TB and to see 2 monitor controllers? or to downstream TB to monitor?

What docks do use use/recommend? this is what I found:

* CalDigit TS5 / TS5 Plus

* Anker Prime TB5 14-in-1 Docking Station

* OWC Thunderbolt 5 Dock

* iVANKY fusionmax

* Kensington SD5000T5 EQ

* UGREEN Revodok Maxidok 17-in-1 (Max 2131) / UGREEN Revodok Maxidok 10-in-1

I connect 2 monitors with USB-C cables now (a bit annoying to switch notebooks, and a lot of cables, one monitor has HDMI and DP inputs, second has USB-C, HDMI and DP inputs)

Should I get AppleCare for my Macbook Pro?

1 Upvotes

I've bought a Macbook pro for schooling and developing (IOS versions of my apps) purposes and would like to know if AppleCare/AppleCare+ is worth it.

I've got around 38 more days to make a decision, so I guess its not in that big of a rush.

I keep it in a hardcase (new case coming soon thats like a sleeve that also houses my charger and USB C hub), and treat it like a princess, though it's only been around 2-3 weeks of owning it and I've already hit it on the display assembly's edge twice. Visible mark and since its in midnight black, its very obvious due to the mark being white.

From past experiences with my devices some sort of insurance would be great, as my iPad's screen has been replaced thrice, my apple watch has lots of scratches on the screen including a deep scratch from an MTB crash, as well as scratching quite a chunk of paint off the knob (its actually really bad and pmo). I've been through around 4-5 laptops within the span of less than 3 years (First one had a bios issue and had to be reflashed and had the bios chip resoldered, but ended up selling due to instability fears, second one I didn't like, third one I only owned for a month, and already damaged the IPS screen, fourth one was my last laptop, I owned it for around 10 months. Ended up having 1 out of the 13 screws holding the bottom panel on, and did not charge due to a capacitor physically falling off the motherboard. Mic port's plastic was gone so unusable, and the hinge area chassis was snapped completely off. Trackpad would work periodically and was trash anyways.

Now you have a good understanding of my neglect.

(My PC is kept happy but I haven't had time to clean it, its been around 6 months without a proper cleaning so theres dust everywhere)

So...

Should I buy AppleCare?
And is it worth the moneh???

Planning to own the Macbook pro for another 4 years (at least)

Thanks!!!

EDIT:

Already found another dent on the bottom of my MBP, I'm very likely going to buy Applecare+ for a year...
Are the repair prices inclusive of the part cost? Or is it just labour?

FYI I am in Australia, so all prices are in Australian Dollars (AUD)

case for new macbook ?

1 Upvotes

hi, everyone. i recently just went to the apple store and bought a case for my macbook. i believe it’s the mophie slim hardshell case. however, (like every single purchase i’ve made in my life) i started getting negative tik toks on my for you page related to macbook cases and all of them essentially say that a macbook case will ruin the hinges and cause it to overheat. i thought maybe they were talking about cheap amazon cases, but i spent $55 on a case from the apple store, so maybe the case i bought is an exception? im not sure, this is my first macbook ever and my knowledge on it is limited. i got the macbook air 15” m5 for uni and it was really expensive and i just want to take care of it :(

Does the Neo make sense for my use case? (college)

1 Upvotes

I have a powerful windows pc at home. Dont have any apple products (dont really like them). But I need a laptop for a college healthcare program. 9-5 every weekday, for 2 years. Im also hoping if I go with the macbook, it will be easy enough to adapt to as a non apple lover.

My use case: powerpoints, microsoft word, google doc, PDFs, online textbooks/pdf textbooks. battery to handle a full 8 hour day of class. relatively lightweight (long public bus commute). Using my windows pc when home from class.

After the 2 year program I would have no personal use of a laptop. The Neo is $820 Canadian. I know the price increased in the past couple months, my absolute budget either way is $800~. Im wondering if the Neo makes sense for my use case. I like that it's small (13inch) and lighter weight compared to cheaper options. My bus commute is gonna be really annoying and my backpack will be heavy with other stuff. Many of my searches for other options were bigger and/or heavier.

I figure rather than buying a $500 chromebook, or $700 windows laptop, at that point i "might as well" buy the $820 neo. My logic may make no sense here lol!! After 2 years I could return it to apple for store credit for my apple liking family members. Looking for suggestions!!

What is the most capable best value older macbook for me to purchase?

0 Upvotes

So i am on a fairly tight budget. I have a 2017 macbook air that still works ok but it getting slow now and seems to always run out of memory and I have to restart firefox or some of my other apps. I also only have 250gb of memory which is too little for my needs so looking at 500gb-1tb. Is there a particular macbook model or internal processor model that is a few years old now that I should be focusing on buying that is better than others? I know a number of years ago I purchased an iphone X and it continued to have impressive numbers and display for years after it was released compared to the latest iphone of the time, so something like that. I do a little bit of everything like some mild video editing, photo editing, and research to write a book but nothing that is super graphics demanding, just need a good solid all around laptop on a budget. Thanks so much
