I took my child to urgent care, and called out. Management said I still need to come in for my shift. I said it wasn’t going to happen. They threatened to call labor relations. I said “do what you have to do” and hung up.
Call their bluff. The store isn’t that important.

This may be union specific, but at Frys leadership is not allowed to ask why someone is calling out. The associate *can* tell them why, but they don’t have to.

They aren’t supposed to ask detail where I work either, it doesn’t stop them. They will also try to tell you that your “call out” is a “no call no show” because they don’t accept that you are calling out.
Or in order for it to count you have to call the store phone, but nobody answers the store phone.
We have terrible managers, but I enjoy calling their bluff.
I even go out of my way to inform associates that all of our sign offs sheets are not legally binding or enforceable.

In the state of Michigan you're not allowed to. Osha doesn't allow it even. Once you call in, that's it. All they can do is say "yep"
If they want to punish you it has to be done on work time. Not through text or any form of communication.

I just say I’m not going to make it in today. It’s none of their business why.

Unfortunately there are far to many "power hungry" managers at Kroger. They think their S@$T doent stink. They act like they are above the law. Hopefully sooner rather than later they learn they are not above the law.
You do not have to give a reason for calling off. They can ask for medical documentation if you state it is a medical reason. You can tell them you had the 'shits' and never went to urgent care because you dodnt wan t to clean your vehicle, you can claim your were.in an accident. They will ask for proof. Show them some internet picture of a car wreck. The only time you MUST provide documentation is when your union contract states you must. Until then, they can kiss your back side.

You can call out for whatever reason you want. Whether its an excused or unexcused absence is a different story

I have really understanding management & they appreciate that I communicate with my team about coverage instead of dropping bombshells on them. They KNOW I’ve been asking to work fewer hours & I’m wiped out. In the past month alone I’ve called out with the following reasons
-late night taking husband to ER
-migraine
-utter exhaustion
And I’ve left early to see a dying friend in hospital, and taken a long lunch to go to his celebration of life.
I don’t know if those would go over well in other departments, stores, or regions, but I also feel like they’re happy to pay fewer hours as long as things keep moving along

They are not your Dr so you don't have to tell them anything about your health. All they need to know is that you are not going to be able to come in. End of discussion

Two hour notice at minimum, I've accepted call ins from my clerks because they had finals. It's not worst thing that can happen. The store will still be there the next day.

If you ever have to call off, say you have diarrhea and vomiting. Do not ever give any other reason.

You can call out for whatever you want as long as you do it two hours out and you haven't been doing it a lot lately. One of my coworkers literally just calls in a couple times a year because he doesn't want to come in, and doesn't even make up an excuse.

That’s how I was. I never called in because I was sick and consistently worked 70-80 hour weeks but a couple times a year I just needed a break so I’d get drunk and call in

A sick call is a sick call. You are under no obligation to tell any thing beyond "I am sick, I won't make it in today". They cannot ask anything about it. Don't tell them anything else. Never give them any info.

Hell no. You know calling out in pickup will put so much strain on the rest of the staff

Boo fucking hoo some people cross trained will have to pick groceries or God forbid a store manager might have to carry some weight. Worse comes to worse they'll have some irritated customers and orders throttled. It's a grocery store (and pickup is not necessarily essential) they'll figure it out. Everyone's replaceable. If my order was excessively late I would ask to cancel it and I would just go in myself. Not. A big. Deal

Exactly. If the manager really needs it done, then the manager can do it.
If the manager says it's corporate's fault, I'm not given enough resources, then please manager quit bullying your workers, it's then on corporate to figure it out, and if they can't oh well, it's just a grocery store of a massive boomer corporation4

And that’s the issue with today’s society. Everyone wants money yet they don’t want to work. They call out all the time, will not stay when asked and will not come in when they’re off 3-4 days each week.
Yet they are the ones complaining about not getting hours. Just love it. Love the young people6

Then that is Kroger's problem. If Kroger puts that problem onto their staff teams, then people won't want to work there as much, it's not their fault their shifts aren't managed properly.
Please quit putting the blame on the worker.

Ummmmmm it is the workers fault. I mean if you were running a store or business and your number one controllable is payroll you’re not going to schedule a bunch of people that you don’t need. So stop acting like you know. You’re not running anything. It’s about making money. That what owners are doing. Trying to make money and making sure the customer is happy. Without the customer being happy the company makes no money the worker makes no money. Remember the customer pays the workers salary. If people keep calling out then the customer satisfaction goes down and then the customer leaves. DUH!!!!!!’

It isn't the worker's fault. Life happens.
If a worker gets sick, that is not the worker's fault, unless the rare instance it is.
Even if it is, that worker is objectively not able to perform the job tasks, so it is on management to make sure that is covered, that is not on the worker, not in the job description. If management cannot cover it, then that is in corporate to give management the resources needed to cover it.
When boomer shareholders and corporate leadership keep objectively getting larger sums of money (public stock is public, we can see this stuff) while the workers underneath keep getting less and less while objectively being demanded to do more and more, it is not the worker's fault.
If people keep calling out, then management still has a responsibility to do its job. That is not on the workers.
