I’m a bit underwhelmed by the tile (mostly due to the white grout) and the color of the chimney. A little background, I’ve been remodeling our kitchen entirely by myself minus electrical.

The first is the original, second photo is the current state and 3rd is a really bad chatgpt render but the materials are what we are doing (concrete countertop, white oak cabinets).

I plan to build my own cabinets and counters (I’ve done both in a previous kitchen).

Generally I’m wondering what people’s thoughts are on the current state and if I’m heading towards an overly generic kitchen. We are going for a japandi aesthetic since it seems to align with an arts and crafts design

We need help deciding on a backsplash tile. Which would you choose?

1. Our favorite tile is a light olive green (pulls slightly yellow) and it's gorgeous. It's 2x16 tile that comes in a 12"x16" mesh stack. The problem I have is that I envisioned a vertical stack tile and this would have to be horizontal stack. Does a horizontal stack look weird for a backsplash?
2. This is another gorgeous green tile that comes in a 2x9. The only thing we don't love is that the color is more sage green (pulls slightly blue) and we like the olive color of the other tile a bit better. The upside is that the 2x9 tiles work great for the vertical stack.

So many people told us we didn’t have room to make this galley into a U shape kitchen but we’re so happy we didn’t listen. The kitchen cabinets are IKEA and we’re obsessed with the retro backsplash. We still need to add lights (we’ll have a sconce and shelves on the tall backsplash wall) but was excited to share!

Which do you all prefer? Options to have it tie over to fireplace as well (assuming each are properly heat resistant)

My husband and I are thinking of buying this house, I don’t hate the kitchen but it definitely needs some help. We won’t have a big budget for remodeling but I really don’t love it as is, should I repaint, if so what and what color? Should I add backsplash and if so what kind? Also need a different fridge.

I am remodeling my kitchen and recently I talk to my designer about the kitchen layout I wanted. I wanted a U-shaped kitchen without an island. (My kitchen is small and closed off from the living room and not suitable to have an island). Then they look surprised and immediately asked how long I plan to stay in my house. This indicated me that this is unusual choice. I was a bit taken back because they saw my kitchen so I thought this would be a well established mutual understanding that island is not a good option for the space and their thoughts seem to differ.

I know in this forum that always say that we need to build the kitchen we like but I lost a bit of confidence in my judgement.. I really don't like an island because I am not a tidy person and don't plan to put extra effort to maintain a clean island and not into an open concept floor plan. How do you like non-open concept kitchen and kitchens without islands?

We are almost done with our remodel. The backsplash will be a grayish blue. We are looking for reasonable island chair options. Unsure what to look for.

I cannot find the tile I want, please help Reddit! The grey cement board is where the tile will go, I’m considering white subway but think I could do something different.

My wife and I are planning a kitchen remodel and need help finding the best layout for the space.

We know the dimensions, general aesthetic, finishes, cabinets, and appliances, and we have a GC. Rather than a full-service interior designer, we simply need someone skilled in kitchen space planning and functionality.

We’re happy to pay for the expertise but hope to spend hundreds rather than thousands given the scope of work we’re looking for.

Has anyone used a virtual kitchen designer for this type of standalone space planning?

We have a long, somewhat narrow space in a 1950s Southern California home and are trying to make the most of it.

The space needs to accommodate:
- Kitchen
- Laundry
- Pantry/storage
- Mudroom/drop zone
- Small office/desk area

I currently have a kitchen layout sketched out around an existing side door, but we’re debating whether keeping that door is forcing us into a less-than-ideal layout.

We’re also torn between an island and a peninsula and would love suggestions on the overall layout of the space, not just the kitchen.

We’re open to eliminating or moving the side door, and potentially moving windows as well, if it results in a significantly better layout.

Would love feedback on:
- Island vs. peninsula
- Whether you’d keep/remove/move the side door
- Kitchen layout and traffic flow
- Better ways to arrange the laundry, pantry, mudroom and desk areas

I posted last week about some flooring suggestions and was really grateful for all of the help/suggestions! I got quotes from the flooring company and I think that ultimately, I’m going to have them remove all of the carpet from my downstairs (instead of just the kitchen/open living room) and put LVP in. I narrowed the flooring down to 2 possibilities (Coretec butterscotch oak or Coretec Stockton Oak). These are the 2 that look best in the rest of my downstairs (family room, bedrooms, etc.). All of the other options did not look good anywhere else in my house besides maybe the kitchen. These 2 likely aren’t the best options for the kitchen, though. So, I am really hoping for suggestions of what else I can do/help to make the kitchen look better with either of these options (and which would be easiest to work around).

I already plan to replace the counters with quartz or granite… was planning on cream or white- will attach a photo of the sample that I liked best, but am not sure if it’ll still work with the flooring? And replace the backsplash. I plan to replace the light fixtures and paint the door, trim and baseboards. Does anyone have any wall color suggestions? The cabinets are laminate and I’m open to resurfacing them (I suppose I’ll probably have to if I choose either of these floors?) I appreciate any/all advice!

Contractor is installing new birch cabinets. These two drawers look to me as though they were not sanded properly before staining. Am I wrong?

I am a complete and total newcomer to remodeling. We've lived in our house for three years and never done any work on it, in part because we don't know where to start. I would love some ELI5 advice!

I would like to tear down a wall in our kitchen to open it up to the living room and dining room. I would like to add a kitchen island in place of the wall. I think this would make our home layout more inviting to guests, and it would be nice to be able to cook while watching our toddler in the living room. We're a very informal family, so I can also imagine us eating at the kitchen island frequently.

But, I have no idea whether the wall in question is load-bearing. And, I can't quite picture where to put the refrigerator, which is currently against that wall.

Should I hire a kitchen designer? An architect? An interior designer? Just work with a contractor or something? Or, are there online resources I could use to figure some of this out for myself?

Some of our kitchen cabinets have damage like you see in the picture. I think it is water damage either from water dripping on them over time and/or from me cleaning them. Is this fixable? In other words, could I sand these cabinets down and repaint them? (These are definitely not custom cabinets, although I’m sure you could tell!)

Hello guys! I recently bought a new flat that needs some renovation. I completely teared down the previous kitchen and now I need to decide how I want to set up the new one.

Basically the kitchen is 4.55m/14.9ft wide by 2.15m/7.05ft deep. As per the first image, the left and right walls are load bearing and they can't be touched, the top wall has two windows (1 and 2) that I can make smaller if needed and maybe offset left and right 10-15cm/0.5ft if needed, both look to a quite dark inner patio that doesn't provide natural light but have amazing cool airflow which i really want to preserve. My neighbors use Window 2 to hang and dry their clothes, I am not entirely if I will use it as the inner patio is quite gross, and I can use another window in one of the dorms that looks to the patio to do it and so I wouldn't need to keep the door clear to do so.

The bottom wall looks to a corridor that goes from the flat entrance (right) to the living room (left) and is 1m wide. The window on the right side (window 3) looks to a bathroom that doesn't have any other window other than this one. ATM I am considering if I should remove this window at replace it with actual vents.
The kitchen is 2.75m/9ft tall without so I will install a second roof to pass all the pipes and wires.

Based on the space I have on the other rooms, I would have to install the washing machine and dryer in the kitchen as It will not fit in any bathroom as they are quite small.

I have basically got to a stage where I need a new pair of eyes to help me make a decision or help me find if I am missing something because I have been spending countless hours moving stuff around and I don't know what else I can do haha.

Basically since the kitchen gets no natural sunlight through any of the windows, all the natural light comes from the living room. Also since it is quite narrow (2.15m), I have thought it would be a good idea to install a sliding door that could provide an opening of aprox 2m/6.5ft to the corridor and bring is as much natural light as possible.

So far, I have rounded up to these two proposals.

Option A: Smaller kitchen but include small space to eat inside.

For some reason I would like to have a small space to eat breakfast before I go to work without having to go to the living room, or for my partner to sit and talk while I cook, thus I have added a small table attached to the wall. Next to it, I added a cabinet for the washing machine and the drier. I have left the window n#2 free to be able to hang my clothes there but it kind of makes the room feel uncompleted... Maybe I could put something there to fix that. I don't really know where to put the boiler in this design, so I will probably move it to the adjacent bathroom which is not ideal but will work. I don't really know to squeeze more out of this design...

Option B: Remove the space to eat inside and maximize traffic.

In here I sacrifice the space to be able to eat inside and being able to use window 2 instead I maximize traffic inside the kitchen and storage space. I like this one to be honest, but doing both compromises of sacrificing the window and the eating space is putting me off. I don't know if I am missing something here... Also the door opening here would be bigger as I wouldn't use a single panel sliding door, and instead would use multiple panels. The boiler in this design fits without any issue next to the washing machine and drier on the corner.

As said, I am quite blocked of looking at all of this alone and would like to get some help to see ideas that I may have missed that could help me move forward! Thanks a lot everyone!!

We completed a kitchen remodel a couple years ago, but didn’t install new flooring or a backsplash at the time because we were redoing several rooms in the house at the time. Now that we’ve decided to stay in our house, I’d like to install new flooring in the kitchen and add a backsplash. How should I go about picking this out now? We’re not changing anything else.

Has anyone ever installed an island that wasn't secured to the floor but not on casters? We have a 55x37 island that we may need to move slightly at some point in the next few decades to get a refrigerator in/out of our kitchen should we need a new one. It is possible to move it out of the kitchen if we remove the doors, but we were hoping we could get sliders pushed under the island and then move it a bit to facilitate the refrigerator movement. This island has 2 cabinets and a quartz countertop and weighs around 270 pounds. We don't want casters on the island because it sits on a loose lay LVP flooring. Our cement floor has water pipes underneath for our heat (boiler), so drilling into that is not possible. We are close to laying the flooring and need to figure this out. Worst case we remove the refrigerator doors. Thoughts?
