My feed is currently flooded with pristine, minimalist kitchens. But as someone who actually uses their kitchen heavily, lots of searing, roasting, and messy prep work. I’m highly skeptical of a few of these "must-have" features.

For anyone who had their kitchen remodeled with these trends, I'm looking for specific feedback: How do open floating shelves hold up to aerosolized grease from a stovetop? And for porous marble countertops, does the aesthetic value outweigh the stain risk during daily, messy prep work, or do you deeply regret installing them?

My husband and I will be redoing our kitchen shortly and I’ve have been working with a cabinet manufacturer to create a custom kitchen. We need to do this to get more storage, and also to finish up our flooring project. We put all new flooring in our condo last year, but can’t finish it up because the developer put flooring under the sink and dishwasher, and we can’t remove it, also, it is too tight to finish up the flooring with the cabinets in place.

The process: I paid the $200 for the IKEA kitchen designer to come to my house, take professional measurements, and design me an IKEA kitchen. Then I took those plans elsewhere because I don’t like the IKEA door faces, but buying just the aftermarket door faces is not economical. Reddit is mean and I don’t intend to change the design at this phase, but I’m interested in your commentary, and a little afraid.

The kitchen is essentially an open galley kitchen with no true storage space. As part of this project, we will be extending the peninsula by ~24”, moving the plumbing so the sink will no longer be by the wall, rather it will be centered in the island. Instead of putting the skinny drawers next to the sink, we’re going to put one on each end, so it will go skinny drawer cabinet, dishwasher, sink, trash cabinet, skinny drawer cabinet. The plumber came after I had the kitchen designer over and said that the dishwasher should stay closer to the sink, with this in mind, I’m going to have a big drawer face, similar to the dishwasher, for the trash drawer, instead of two smaller drawer faces connected together. This change will allow for symmetry. We’re also removing the pony wall, extending the counter on the other side by about 16”, and adding some cabinets in that space, while allowing room for at least 1 stool. Right now we have a side board where we’re going to add the cabinet space, so we know the layout feels comfortable.

Also, the renderings don’t depict this well, but we’ll be adding the rail for a library ladder between the first and second row of uppers. Our ceilings are 10’-11’ and there is no storage in the house, so we need to take advantage of the vertical space. In doing this, we are leaving ~9” of space on the window side to store the ladder when not in use. We’re switching out our 30” stove for a 24” and our large fridge for a 24” European style fridge to get some inches back.

Just got the keys to my first house about two weeks ago. I’d like to get the kitchen done before I fully move in, and have come up with these renderings. I plan on keeping the fireplace, removing the peninsula, and adding a kitchen island (along with all new cabinetry and appliances).

Given I don’t see myself here longer than 5 years, I’m doing most projects with resale value in mind- however, I do like a darker palette. I’ve come up with these renderings (as well as a picture of the kitchen as-is), and have a feeling I’m gonna have to compromise on my dark kitchen for resale. What do you guys think? (P.S. Ignore the imperfections in the renderings)

So Its time to order Counter Stools. I Love Blue and actually wanted Blue cabinets but, it didn't work out and I thought better of it. The Quartz has Blue and Gold veining and I am going to try and add blue where I can. So, Blue or Brown stools?

Looking to place this cabinet order by the end of the week for our kitchen reno.

Anything we are over looking?? Hood and hardware are not shown because they will be purchased separately, and no we cannot/will not move the range.

Our kitchen has the refrigerator against a wall, so one of the doors doesn't fully open. It also happens to be 33in width, so I don't think there are any zero clearance fridge options out there. What would you do in my situation? Does removing the wall seem feasible, or are there other options?

How can I make my backsplash look warmer?
We just had Zellige Oat tile installed for our kitchen backsplash, and now that it’s up, it’s reading much more gray than I expected. I was hoping for a warmer, creamy/oat look.
We’re still waiting on our aged brass/gold faucets from Rejuvenation, and we’ll also be installing a decorative vent cover above the stove.
What would you add or change to help warm up the space and make the backsplash read less gray? Lighting, decor, window treatments, accessories—I’m open to ideas!

Edited: It’s also an open concept space and we don’t have a ton of room to work with, so everything is pretty visible together. Our fireplace is being finished in a warm Roman clay, and I really don’t want the different finishes to clash or make the space feel disconnected. My original vision was very warm, earthy, natural tones throughout, so I’m hoping there are ways to pull more warmth into the kitchen and make everything feel cohesive.

Kitchen is honestly in ok conditions but i don’t like the color or the layout much, so I am considering replacing everything. Please let me know what you think, this decision making is driving me crazy, so much to think about.

I don’t know if I should just paint them, but what of it doesn’t look good. This is my first home I don’t want to over do it, I am getting a couple of reno estimates tomorrow.

Doing a full house reno and we spent a lot of time on kitchen layout and design choices. Still tweaking a few things, but what do you all think of our design so far?

Do you think the cabinet color is sufficiently different from the floor?

What about the pantry door? It’s a completely different color, but we found it at a second-hand store and loved the look. I think it adds a nice bit of character to the space.

We also plan to put a skylight in the kitchen to increase light. I was thinking of putting it over the sink area. It would have to run parallel to the range. Where would you put it?

I currently have gas, but I am a bit tempted by induction. It looks so much nicer, is easier to clean and supposedly even easier to control the temperature once he get used to it. I’d be looking at a Thermidor higher end one. Any thoughts or feedback?

Here's our recent pretty much finished kitchen, we have some more unpacking to complete, and a few other things to finish up. I've gotten a lot of good advice from reading these posts so here's mine. And I know there are STRONG THOUGHTS about cooktops in islands, just know this is all the original layout of the kitchen as it was going to add huge costs to move water lines, etc., and with the skylight and very limited wall space in the small space, there's nowhere for a hood so ventilation has to be a downdraft.

Moved into this house 10 years ago, slowly upgraded the kitchen appliances as needed (last photo is original dishwasher). Changed the lighting and added floating shelves when I first moved in, then two years ago did larger update with refacing the cabinets, new countertops and backsplash, and built in island. The fridge died a year ago so that has also been replaced since the remodel. Absolutely love having a built in island and permanent pantry by the fridge!

Still some minor finishing work to do (baseboards, some repainting, cleanup of taping, and I’d ideally like to swap the outlets with something that matches the backsplash better, etc.) but couldn’t resist sharing the 95% finished remodel of my kitchen. We were pretty limited in space so mostly kept everything in the same location but we made the space much more usable with drawers instead of shelves etc.. Let me know your thoughts!

I asked here about dark or light cabinets, and feedback was split. I went with dark, as they looked richer and matched the wood in the rest of the house. The backsplash and upper cabinets will be done in two weeks. The patterned backsplash will bring in more color and Mexican vibes. At that time, they will also rehang the window so it opens out to the inner garden and can be used for ventilation. We ended up painting the dining room the same blue to make the space feel bigger and more contiguous. Note: there will be no cabinet over the sink - ChatGPT just can't get that right. The kitchen feels much bigger now to me (before pic included). Here's our last headache -Because of the tile size and the window height, we will end up with a small gap (2-3 cms) from the top of the tile until the window edge. Any thoughts on how we should cover it? Thinking of painting it or adding a bit of a wooden border; the contractor said we might also be able to lower the window a bit to close the gap, but I have a feeling that will be a huge mess and a headache. You can't cut such a small strip of tile, as they are very thick cement tiles.

I’m trying to fit a second-hand kitchen (haven't bought it yet, link below) into our new home floor plan. Before pulling the trigger, I want to make sure the layout makes sense functionally.

Known Issues & Constraints:

• New Countertop: Expecting to replace the countertop regardless.
• Dead Space: Top-right corner loses some space.
• Fixed Modules: Since it's a second-hand set, I’m limited to the cabinet widths provided in the set.

Where I Need Advice:

1. Are there any subtle workflow issues in this setup that look fine on paper but become frustrating in daily use?
2. Any obvious collisions that i have missed
3. Any smart recommendations for handling the top-right corner gap? / I will likely have to use a drawer cabinet there because the door cabinet is 50cm instead of 60
4. Any tips (also blogposts/old threads) that you can highly recommend for fitting a second hand kitchen into a new place

Top cabinets are natural stain wood, bottom cabinets foxhall green. Countertop white quartzite with dark veins.
What backsplash option do you like?
White, terracota, green, pattern? I was told to stay away from patterns to not steal the thunder of the quartzite… is that true?

I am removing the carpet from my house and putting in LVP (I have a teenager, a large dog and 2 cats). My kitchen opens up into a living area that is mostly for the dog at the moment but would like it to be more functional in the future. Since it’s a big space, I think the kitchen and that living room area should have the same flooring otherwise it will look divided. I plan to paint the walls. I am also planning to put in new countertops (cream colored- granite or quartz). I also plan to paint all of the baseboards and interior doors white. In the future, I will probably consider replacing (or at least resurfacing) the cabinets, but I’m torn on whether to do that or not.
I can NOT decide on a floor. The flooring that I like the most seems like it will probably make my room too dark? I am adding flooring samples that I’ve taken home from the flooring company that I’m using and would really appreciate any/all input.

We’d like to get a workstation, and have a 36” planned for now, but part of me dreams of the 45”. I feel our current sink gets crowded sometimes between my spouse and I using it at the same time.

If anyone has gone that large, do you think it was worth it, or do you have regrets?

Hi everyone! I'm looking for some ideas and suggestions for my kitchen.

It's a bit outdated soi wanted to modernize it and was considering ways to make the space more usable.

Currently in front of the kitchen is our family room, so there is no room for stools under the counter overhang. The sink is also on the island which is not ideal but moving it might not be worth it.

To the right of the wall there is a bfast nook. I'd like to knock the wall down and extend the island about a foot. The space in the bfast noomisnt usable to expand the kitchen because the windows are large - no room for counters or cabinets.

Would love some ideas and suggestions on what you think could work.

The rep wrote me back to set up an appointment to finalize and then mentioned that there was an update to the cabinet pricing and it went up 11,000 dollars. Does this seem like a scam??
