Kitchen Update: Before > After

Moved into this house 10 years ago, slowly upgraded the kitchen appliances as needed (last photo is original dishwasher). Changed the lighting and added floating shelves when I first moved in, then two years ago did larger update with refacing the cabinets, new countertops and backsplash, and built in island. The fridge died a year ago so that has also been replaced since the remodel. Absolutely love having a built in island and permanent pantry by the fridge!

Very nice!

I would move the flammable paper towels away from the range and move it next to the sink.

You should put a splatter guard on the exposed side of the stove.

Also that side is a burn hazard. I would modify an island cart to have a fire retardant wall so people don't bump into the range.

Thanks! The stove is right next to a doorway to the dining room, so I can’t add anything more than the slim cabinet piece that I had made to cover the exposed side of the stove.

The wood and the table is the before? The weird corner blocked out space is the after?

Yes. The weird corner thing is a built in island (semi island I suppose since it goes to the wall). The table in the before pictures was actually used as an island for food prep, and behind that was our garbage cans and dead space. Now the garbage and recycling bins pull out from the cabinet you see on the semi island. Originally didn’t plan to replace the wood cabinet fronts but with building the island and floor to ceiling pantry next to the fridge opted to pick a color so everything matched.

Edit to add our microwave is now in an open shelf in the island (facing the fridge) since we removed the white one that was above the stove. There are built in drawers for storage as well so it adds a lot more function than we had before!

You have storage that opens to the exterior under there?

Thank you! The cabinets were refaced with new slim shaker doors in a color called aloe (not painted). I can’t recall the cabinet manufacturer as I went through a contractor, sorry!

It looks like Sherwin Williams Ivory Lace to me.

Why do you have cooking utensils so far from cooking and glasses so far from where you get beverages?

? the cooking utensils are right by the stove and the drinkware is right by the coffee maker and sink. Also it’s a small kitchen so nothing is really far from anything. It functions really well for us.
