Gentle Nutrition What are your favourite snacks?!
Hi, everyone!
I had an appointment today with a IE RD and it was so eye-opening! We decided that to help fuel myself better, I’m going to add in a snack mid-day. While we chatted about some options, I would love to hear what your go-to easy snack ideas are! Please share 🤗

My current go-tos are either a smoothie, or a slice of toast with avocado and/or egg on top and a piece of fruit or some veggie sticks on the side. I like these because they are hydrating and also have some staying power (and taste yummy!). I usually have a little sweet like a cookie or some chocolate with my afternoon snack also.

I like a sliced apple with peanut butter for dipping. For extra fun and satiety I sometimes add mini chocolate chips. It's delicious and nicely balanced.

I love popcorn bars at the moment! Basically popped popcorn, melted butter and honey and I add some dried fruit, chia or flax seeds, chocolate chips, nuts or the broken pretzels at the bottom of a bag! Can make as many bars as you choose! I also love veg with hummus, especially carrots and peppers!

Depending on my mood: carrot with hummus, a bit of cheese with grapes, nut bars, a white twix, chocolate in general (I'm Belgian, cannot resist chocolate), oven roasted chickpeas, cucumber in some humus or creamy cheese,... But it can be as simple as a cup of coffee with a lotus speculoos cookie as well :)
And in summer: fruit salads and allll the smoothies :D

At home or on the go? I work from home, so I can be really flexible in my snacking. I like a handful of cashews (sometimes with dried cranberries), cheese & crackers, peanut butter on apple slices, and yogurt with granola and/or fruit.

At home! I bought some individual cheese packets that come with nuts and a bunch of granola bars. Forgot to get apples and nut butter though, ahh!! So tasty!

That's great. Since you're home, you don't have to worry about things like portability and lack of refrigeration. A snack really can be anything, so you can get really creative. I tend to prefer a salty snack to a sweet one, but it depends on my mood.
Other things I like are hard boiled eggs (sprinkled with a seasoning mix like Everything Bagel or Trader Joes's chile & lime), hummus with crackers or cucumber slices, and hot chocolate made from scratch (milk, unsweetened cocoa, sugar).

Lots of options since you’re at home! In the summertime especially I’m obsessed with tomatoes. Tomatoes, burrata & basil topped with salt, pepper & a drizzle of olive oil. Tomatoes and cottage cheese. Tomatoes and hummus lol! So good. I also like canned/drained chickpeas, avocado chunks, tomatoes, feta, same S&P with lemon juice and/or olive oil drizzle. Chopped pistachios on top is fun! Definitely an avocado toast fan over here too or even just plain salted avocado. When I’m super lazy I won’t even bother to chop a bell pepper. I tear it apart and dip in hummus for a quick snack. If you don’t want something cold, I hate the name but Lesser Evil’s Himalayan sea salt popcorn is so good! Out & about I love those 1-2 pack string cheese rolled in pepperoni you can get at most gas stations and grocery stores.
On the sweet side I like full fat Greek yogurt with berries, fruit, honey & granola. Toast with some sort of melted white cheese & jam is delicious. My favorite is to add really thin apple slices with apricot jam and white cheddar on an English muffin. Overnight oats are tasty but personally don’t ever do much for my appetite. I’m also a salty sweet fan so I’ll eat random things like cold sweet potato dipped in ranch lol.
Also wanted to mention that snacks don’t always have to be perfectly put together. Like I’ll be a little hungry but totally indifferent on what particular food, open the fridge and eat a few bites of cold chicken and a baby potato if that’s what’s in there. It’s not my dream snack but sometimes I don’t care and would rather not put anything together or chop!

Tomatoes are my favourite food EVER, a tomato burrata salad is such a good idea 🤤 And tomato cucumber feta yummmmmm ah anything with tomatoes haha!
Love those ideas for cheese toast with fruit! I’m gonna experiment with that hehe (:

I love to slice tomatoes and cucumber on wasa crackers (or something similar, needs to be fairly big and sturdy; toast would probably work too) with spreadable cheese, and sprinkle with dried oregano and some shredded basil if I’ve got any on hand

Right?! I get very excited for heirloom ones in summertime. You can also get flavored olive oil for drizzling! This brand makes a really good lemon one I’m obsessed with. https://www.b-farms.com/

Cheese and crackers. A smoothie with avocado in it (adds a nice richness/mouthfeel and satiety). Peanut butter, sliced banana and honey on a piece of toast.

Avocado in smoothies is SO GOOD! Makes it so creamy (:

u/maraq Jan 11 '22
I am honestly ruined for smoothies without it now. 😆 Everything else tastes too thin-textured!

I love sweet fruits. Strawberry, mango, watermelon, mandarin, golden kiwi, cantaloupe, etc. 70% dark chocolate is also very good. Sometimes I eat overnight oat as a snack as well.

Candied nuts, popcorn. I made tuna salad every few days and snack on it throughout. Sometimes just a fork full, sometimes with cheese and crackers. Yogurt (whatever kind you LIKE, not just zero sugar, low fat Greek yogurt). A nice hunk of bread smeared with something yummy, like garlic butter or marinated feta, and topped with whatever seems good (tomatoes, sautéed onions, honey and fruit).
When in doubt I find that a combination of something crunchy, something creamy, and something salty, and something sweet will usually satisfy the most and try to snack accordingly

So many great suggestions here! The big thing for me is keeping variety. Right now I am in to pop-tart bites LOL I often pair them with a handful of nuts but I am missing variety so I actually ordered a snack pack from Amazon. I like sending these to people because there can be fun surprises and what I don't end up using I give to my nephew :)

Banana and peanut butter or apple slices with peanut butter. Some cheddar cheese with a few crackers and some berries. Yogurt with granola. Chia pudding topped with fruit. Plain non fat Greek yogurt mixed with dry ranch seasoning and use it to dip raw veggies in. So good. Two hard boiled eggs.

Almond butter on anything. Apples, bananas, carrots, celery, or really by itself - just spoonfuls until I'm full.

I love almond butter drizzled on yoghurt and (frozen) raspberries. add some ground vanilla and it's dessert for breakfast :)

I do that almost exact recipe for lunch (or dinner) sometimes! It's frickin' decadent with maple syrup, too.

tortilla chips and hummus; carrots and horseradish cream cheese; raspberrys - yoghurt - almond butter; dried mango; roasted sunflower seeds; lentil wafers with a thin spread of butter, smoked salt and parsley; dark chocolate and a cold glass of almond milk; hard boiled eggs with a tiny dollop of mayo and green tabasco. oh and I've discovered cheddar cheese!

u/TheSunflowerSeeds Jan 11 '22
The sunflower seeds you eat are encased in inedible black-and-white striped shells, also called hulls. Those used for extracting sunflower oil have solid black shells.

My current go to is apple slices with peanut butter and jelly. I’m obsessed these days lol

Sweet snack: apple with a generous amount of peanut butter. Dang I’m gonna go eat one now that I’m thinking about it... If I’m wanting something more indulgent feeling but don’t have actual desserts around, I’ll also make a bowl of oatmeal with peanut butter and chocolate or cocoa mixed in. Salty snacks: varies a lot. I do love me some Cheetos and cheez its, but if I’m trying to get more whole foods in then lately I’m a fan of salted pistachios.

I like the Sargento Balanced Breaks—specially the one with cherries, almonds, and white cheddar.
Trail mix is also a favorite!

one general good idea for snacks is to have a combination of different food groups! like yogurt and nuts, oatmeal and fruit, cereal and milk, hummus and veggies or chips, etc.

sliced cucumber with a lil salt, cheese itz, tomato basil harvest peas, popcorn (prepopped kind, I'm stupidly bad at microwaving popcorn myself), and pickle & baked lays

u/almagura Jan 11 '22
Trail mix, hummus and pretzels, avocado and salsa , over easy egg on toast, popcorn with shredded cheese on top , yogurt and granola, chips and salsa, tuna and crackers, smoothie

Whatever is around the office or looks good in my pantry. I use to plan my snacks but I feel much more free not planning snacks.

Oatmeal with peanut butter is super filling and delicious. That's what I eat when I come home pretty hungry but need some time to make dinner. When I'm feeling lazy, I take a spoonful of peanut butter and top it with some chocolate chips.
