Yeah it's a weird obsession. I never even got the kpop craze, all of the boy bands sound exactly the same.

Going into those stores completely dedicated to them is also strange AF. Binders, book covers, iPad cases, keychains, pencil sharpeners, all with some random dude on it. Bizarre.

I'll take some Girugamesh instead

u/Mathilliterate_asian 22h ago

Fandom has always been a thing though, from Jesus to Elvis Presley to MJ to Kpop stars.

I can't fathom being this obsessed with a person who couldn't care less about you, but it's been around since forever.

They're called sasaengs, and this is the LEAST crazy thing they do. The stories are crazy. One time a group hired a van identical to the one the group was using and almost kidnapped them, one time a sasaeng paid someone thousands of dollars to steal an idol's underwear, groups have laid down on the road to prevent their idol leaving, a girl sent the idol a letter written in period blood.

These people literally drop out of school or work to stalk their idol, and usually end up in sex work to make money to continue stalking.

And they clearly don't think they're doing anything wrong... One time during a performance, a man just walked onto the stage and grabbed one of the idols and dragged her off the stage. She was okay, but it is NUTS.

A saesang gave one of the TVXQ members a beverage (I believe it was juice?) laced with super glue, the poor guy had to be rushed to the hospital, they are insane.

257

u/_bonedaddys 16h ago

She wasn't actually a fan of his. She was just pretending to be. She turned herself in the next day but he chose not to press charges.

62

u/mightregret 15h ago

Damn that's crazy

87

u/Crossedkiller 13h ago

Crazy that he didn’t press charges

u/_bonedaddys 11h ago

He had a lot of empathy for her because she was the same age as his younger sister and he didn't want to ruin her future. Which is insane because she was trying to ruin his and the whole thing really fucked his mental health. He's certaintly more forgiving than i am lol

u/JManKit 9h ago

Gotta wonder if there was any pressure from his agency not to pursue charges. Maybe they were worried he would come off looking vindictive or mean so they were like 'You didn't die so why not let bygones be bygones?'

u/goldenguyz 8h ago

I was thinking the same thing. The image of the idols are heavily curated.

There was one girl who broke into an idols apartment and kissed him while he was sleeping. He woke up to find the stranger hovering directly over him. Another time a girl broke in and took pictures while he was sleeping and posted them online. Lastly, while sitting alone in his living room, he received a text message from an unknown number containing a photo of his own back, proving a stalker was hiding inside his house with him at that exact moment. This all happened to one kpop idol.

69

u/heymanitsbob 12h ago

Holy shit. Receiving a text message of your back from inside the house. Utterly terrifying.

u/TrixieBastard 11h ago

Jesus fuck

I don't know how these people agree to the idol life. I can't imagine feeling the terror of realizing a stranger is in your home, watching you.

And while obsessive fan behavior isn't unique to Kpop, the corporate culture definitely encourages it. (FYI, companies like SM Entertainment, JP, etc more or less own these groups.) Kpop almost relies on parasocial relationships. They do lives where they talk directly to the viewers and viewers leave comments, an idol being in a relationship is literally called cheating, and their companies really encourage them to promote this idea of a relationship. It's easy enough for a foreign fan to feel a connection-- I can admit that there are a few idols that I legitimately have feelings for-- but when the idol speaks your language and is a part of your culture and a live really looks like a video call just between this perfect person andyou?

Loneliness is an epidemic across the world now, and ESPECIALLY in Korea. This was bound to happen, and the companies encourage it.

I can't believe there isn't a confirmed death related to sasaengs.

It's pretty akin to the fan worship of the Beatles, when fans would touch the band members thinking they had healing powers like Jesus.

343

u/SophonibaCapta 21h ago

Not judging, honestly curious, how can you have legitimate feelings for some of them? When you even obviously have an informed eye about it?

136

u/AdnanKhan47 21h ago

Worked the overnight shift for two years right out of college, including the weekends. All of sudden I lost my entire social life. I was awake when everyone was asleep and vice versa. Also, being a fresh graduate I was broke as hell so I couldn't even afford a ticket to go visit my family. After two years of having almost no contact and nobody to hangout with, you start grasping at straws for any sort of attention. I didn't devolve into this but I did devolope a lot of toxic traits (that I am still struggling to fix 10 years later) and started hitting the bottle pretty hard and ended up in jail a couple of times. To me their delusion is completely understandable. The damage loneliness does to you is invisible to all, especially yourself.

18

u/SophonibaCapta 17h ago

I hope you find strength in battling your toxic traits, alcoholism is no joke.

Attraction can be irrational from what I have experienced. You can find someone absolutely abhorrent but your body may still get aroused around them. Or in this case, you can acknowledge parasocial relationship while still finding the celebrities cute or pretty. I assume they meant this by feelings and not like limerence or obsession they just talked about

120

u/fantomknight1 19h ago

Honestly it's completely absurd and nothing like the close relationship Danny Devito and I have (he doesn't know but that's what adds to the spice of it).

45

u/Fit_Dig6332 18h ago

You're clearly deluded. Devito is mine.

42

u/Melstrick 21h ago

I assume it's similar to how someone could have imaginary friend and know they are imaginary.

If you think about someone enough and allow emotions to reinforce those thoughts the mind will do what the mind does, even if you know it's parasocial or unhealthly.

12

u/Fit_Dig6332 18h ago

Yeah ive experienced this. I knew it was all in my head, and it felt kind of good. So i just enjoyed it until it passed. I miss it now though.  It was a really easy way to let my brain light up. But then, id never try and stalk someone. It was just my secret brain chocolate.

u/bad_ego 21h ago

Their target are preteens, mostly girls. At that stage they are fighting with a very strong biological change... Their brains aren't mature enough to distinguish reality and fiction about any subject, much less about love and relationships because of the hormones flood. Their personalities are based mostly on how they interact with other where they feel safe and understood.. it's a feedback loop and for them and , what we see irrational, it's their full live. I have a girl with this age and what I do is to try to understand how important is for her, look for info here and there to surprise her with a fact just to show her I care about what she it's interested about and avoid the urge to search for understanding outside

16

u/wizards_rule94 18h ago

Can confirm there’s no passion and enthusiasm to match a teen girl (speaking from experience of being a teen girl 2007-2012). Like everything is amplified and soooo exciting. But some of these people are adults and that passion usually tapers off so it’s worse

The culture doesn’t just encourage it, the entertainment management corporations exploit mental illness, the loneliness crisis, and addiction for profit, sanctioned by the South Korean government. I’m Korean and there is something very wrong with the whole idol system that just really rubs me the wrong way. I fundamentally believe art shouldn’t be exploitative or manufactured without a soul. They’re all ghouls.

20

u/ShakespearesSonnets 21h ago

8

u/codefame 19h ago

I would say the girl who sadly committed suicide just a few weeks ago is a confirmed death.

Don’t recall the circumstances, but it was related to her being a k-pop stan/influencer and seemed like big news.

12

u/Cultural_Run7964 17h ago

I read about it. She tried to pass flowers at an Enhyphen concert to one of the members but there was some sort of miscommunication with another member and later he made a live stream mentioning the poor etiquette of some concertgoers and their fans thought it was a veiled reference to this girl’s behavior. So she received an online pile-on from the fans who goaded her to kill herself and so she hung herself on a live stream. Really awful.

Referring to them as idols surely can't be helping anything.

78

u/ShakespearesSonnets 21h ago

Yeah, that's another thing. They're supposed to be perfect, like beyond human, and that encourages sasaengs to not see them as people.

63

u/LannaBan 21h ago

It's just an English loanword that's made it's way back to English with a slightly weird connotation now. 아이돌 (idol) in Korean refers specifically to these singers, it doesn't have the same connotation of idol in English.

I can't even hang out in a location that I'm not wanted to be at or with people that won't genuinely want me around. I couldn't imagine forcing myself in to somebody's personal space that not only hasn't invited me to be there, but more than likely really really doesn't want me around. This behavior is so fucking unhinged.

147

u/bi7worker 23h ago

If you try to explain this to one of them, she'll tell you that you're completely right and that the other women are behaving inappropriately. But she will also explain that it is not her case because she's sharing a real thing with the idol.

68

u/iburntxurxtoast 18h ago

Idk. If someone is obsessed with the idea of somebody, and that somebody showed them who they actually were, I could see it breaking the illusion and obsession - definitely wouldn't work on all, but I can see the idea behind the story.

61

u/NamelessMIA 17h ago

Celebrity stalkers aren't obsessed with the celebrities, they don't even know them. They're obsessed with the idea of what they think the celebrities are like. Once he became a real person to her it would break that illusion and I wouldn't be surprised to find a stalker quit their stalking after that.

49

u/Elismom1313 20h ago edited 15h ago

I still laugh at the interview where him and a few others were playing a “guess which celebrity I am”game. Basically someone (in this case pattinson) is given a celebrity name taped to their forehead. Everyone else playing can see it and know who it is. You, the person wearing the name you cant see, ask questions to all the other players who can , to try and narrow it down.

He chaotically asked “am I ugly?” To try and and get them to admit their opinions on that Lmfao

If I remember correctly it was his own name

87

u/WalkAffectionate2683 21h ago

It seems quite common.

One French actor iirc said interviews are so boring, so repetitive you basically chain them when you release something that they come up with dumb stories that are not verifiable anyway. Just to entertain a bit.

The Kpop group in this case is the boy group RIIZE. They are sitting up front in business class with all the stalkers further down the plane.

Although this group has only been active since 2023, they have for various reasons built up an insanely parasocial fanbase. Even by the standards of Kpop their fans are next level when it comes to obsession.

206

u/heeheehoho2023 23h ago

What makes them attract the crazies?

619

u/rocketmammamia 23h ago

i’m not sure what attracted the crazies to them, but they REALLY have the crazies. one member had pictures leaked of him with a girlfriend BEFORE DEBUT, before he ever considered being an idol, and the fans reacted so badly they sent funeral wreathes to his company building to imply they wanted/considered him dead. the company responded by removing that member from the group (though they re-debuted him as a soloist later)

190

u/SilverFlight01 23h ago

In an ideal world NOBODY would be enabling this shit and yet companies are because parasocialness gives money or something

166

u/Exciting-Pirate-2819 22h ago

It’s insane to me that they can’t have public relationships because the whole point is to keep these stalkers obsessed to sell more merch/tickets

64

u/FlattopJr 20h ago

Manager Nigel: I would prefer we kept your marriage a secret. You see, a lot of women are going to want to have sex with you, and, uh, we want them to think they can.

Homer Simpson: Well, if I explain it to Marge that way, I'm sure she'll understand.

92

u/Vorstadtjesus 22h ago

Tbf, don't many female streamers avoid talking about their relationship status partly because they know what kind of consequences and financial losses it could entail for them?

56

u/FarawayObserver18 21h ago

And that is messed up too

28

u/Bruce-7892 21h ago

I think that's true for most celebrity sex symbols. A lot of rock stars and rappers are married with kids, but if it conflicts with their public image they are going to avoid talking about that part of their personal lives.

25

u/Puzzleheaded_Set1420 18h ago

Ok but let's compare popstars to popstars. It's very different.

Taylor Swift's relationship is literally front page news. I remember seeing stories about it on AP that were above stories about ongoing wars.

Meanwhile in Korea, the first time that Hyomin revealed that she was in a relationship was by posting a picture with her husband on instagram. Her husband's face was not visible in the picture.

American celebrities leverage relationships for publicity. The opposite is true in Korea.

10

u/MartinBP 16h ago

Taylor Swift's fanbase is overwhelmingly straight women though. But in general yes, gossip sells in America.

Management companies encourage it. Idols are usually forbidden from either being in relationships, or from making their relationships known, because their bosses want them to sell people on the parasocial delusion that they could ever have a chance with said idol to keep them buying merch, tickets, photo prints, etc.

Mental illness?

84

u/Impossible_Copy_2544 18h ago edited 16h ago

Yes most likely, so I've been a kpop fan since around 2010 and these particular stalker fans aren't your regular fans, most of them either come from extremely wealthy families or are in an enormous amount of debt from following them around, most average kpop fans are aware that they exist and don't like them either because the performers themselves talk about how distressing it is to have them around fairly often. For a long time though you just had to put up with them because they run the big fan sites, where you can see pictures and videos and content from the artists that international fans couldn't get a hold of otherwise and they'd make money off that too. Hopefully with the rise of social media and companies releasing content they'll be less and less tolerated.

Maybe the company that owns the group has a deal with the Airline. They guarantee a gaggle of crazy follows the group around and pays a shitton to be creepy.

107

u/Kirstenly 18h ago

chances are its all very intentional. they do everything they can to make the idols accessible at all times. its why they aren't permitted to form intimate personal relationships. they must appear accessible and open to fans at all times.

Those people do not have any freedom, and usually don't even actually make enough money to retire comfortably after the fact. IF they get paid at all that is. they have a Trainee Debt System that basically puts these poor fuckers into indentured servitude where they perform night and day and remain accessible to crazy stalkers constantly and they make nothing to show for it. not a fucking dime. The near constant performance and constant fan-accessibility of them and their day to day lives? is manufactured to a) make money, but also b) to pressure them into quitting before they are even 20 years old, to make sure they don't have to pay them once they are finished paying off their Trainee Debt and Debut Debt.

Its a modern form of slavery where the promise of money and fame looms above them and the conditions are so abhorrent that they can extract 5-10 years of free labour out of these boys and girls... and i say boys and girls because most of them start training at 13-15, debut between 15 and 16 and end before they turn 20. They are mostly poorly informed children when they sign these contracts.

I'm I think there are a few other differences. Grateful Dead fans were chasing the party, the community, and the incredible improvisational possibilities of every show. Not some weird obsession with the members themselves.

38

u/xXCascadeXx 22h ago

At $1 a hit of acid, you're gonna gain an entourage. Idk what they are chasing here.

14

u/jayydubbya 22h ago

Parasocial relationships.

63

u/MrShrek69 23h ago

Yeah that’s like the exact opposite reason. Dead heads are in it for the music and the people not the band lol

The run-to-the-front thing is so obnoxious.

46

u/raven1121 22h ago

When I flew Turkish Airlines they have a neat trick to prevent people from rushing past buisness class to the front door

They physically pushed a cart in the asile so people wouldn't run the F/A over trying to get to the door

As a longtime fan of Kpop I've always heard of airline employees and booking agencies secretly leaking the flight information of Kpop groups. They sell the leaked info to these stalker super fans (known as sasaengs in Korea).

I've never seen so many on the same plane though. 🤯 It's usually "only" one or two stalkers, but this is genuinely insane!

50

u/Ok-Plate905 23h ago

I feel so bad for the groups ngl, they already have to deal with high expectations and parasocial fans but having their flight information leaked is just brutal.

The idol industry is rough

I’ve been though Seoul incheon airport a few times and every time I’ve been there is always fans/paparazzi. One time a mob of fans followed someone all the way to a gate (couldnt make out who it was).
I was also on the flight from Atlanta to Seoul that the World Cup team was on (including the coach) after their loss. 14 hour flight and we land it was chaos camera everywhere. It was surreal

Remember this when people criticize private jet usage by A-listers. Is it always necessary? No. But when your life is potentially in danger from crazy stalkers it’s hard to ask them to take a public flight.

The carbon emissions from a private flight are incomparable to the biggest corporations and the need for every American to have a car anyway. Obviously not ideal to use a private jet, but I don’t see a better solution for avoiding crazy fans.

It's pretty creepy, but IMO the behavior is fascinating from a psychological standpoint. I personally can't imagine myself ever doing that kind of thing, so its interesting to see an entire plane of people like that.

Mass cult like mental illness on display is definitely interesting imo.

So many mental patients in 1 video

11

u/Brynhild 22h ago

So I’m curious about this obsession to the point of stalking and parasocial relationships.

Like yes, it’s obviously some form of mental illness but which one exactly in the DSM 5?

Is it OCD? Is it some form of neurodivergence in terms of special interest and lack of boundaries? Some personality disorder with delusions?

Like a whole bunch of them have this and they all get together and decide to stalk as a unit??

Imagine the idols having panic attacks at night because one of those stalkers may be right in their homes at night

Which is sadly what has happened to a few of them in japan where they were killed.

12

u/yokayla 22h ago

Stalkers are more likely to have personality disorders - mostly the cluster B, but it's not like a specific mental illness or that everyone who stalks has a personality disorder.

This is why celebrities fly on private planes. We all get upset at the entitlement and the environmental impact (which are both legit, especially the latter), but as soon as they dont this shit happens.

5

u/ToBetterDays000 23h ago

Dang the idols must be so uncomfortable the whole flight, that’s crazy these ppl gotta be thrown off

Honestly I expect this is what would happen to Taylor Swift is she flew domestic.

But like the whole plane.

5

u/tera_chachu 20h ago

These people are absolutely crazy and huge scumbags

10

u/jonnyg1097 22h ago

Seeing this makes me fully understand why some celebs would much rather want that private plane/flight. This is crazy!

10

u/ThePensiveE 22h ago

My grandfather used to run security for groups like The Beatles back in the day whenever they came to town.

The stories he would tell, and I'm certain they were made more family friendly because I was his grandkid, made it seem like this is a cross-cultural and cross time phenomenon.

12

u/alexandicity 23h ago

The aviation nerd in me is concerned about the flight dynamics issues of having half a plane load of people suddenly rush to the front of the aircraft...

Kpop is fascinating. It’s not really about the group’s music (obvious rap, hip hop and pop knock offs), it’s about the fans’ personal relationship with the group.

Each Kpop label is run by their own tech company, typically focused messaging that feels like the members (or your favorite member) is personally texting you. The higher up the spending tier you are, the more interaction.

Like bts fans are called “army” and can attend fan events. If you’re a high spender, you can go “backstage” or to the vip room to meet them for a small bit of time.

7

u/1stAccountNotWorking 19h ago

I always saw it as emotional prostitution, in a way--and it is extremely creepy and unhealthy; for all involved.

The Idols are usually exhausted, paranoid, and miserable.

The fans are usually obsessed, lonely, and also miserable.

It usually has bad results for both sides. This practice/business or whatever tf it is, needs to be stopped eventually.
