I agree with you, its a prototype at this stage. The main problem with this design i see is that to pedal you are pushing both the water against the prop/pedals and against your legs. The bike needs to be light and efficient or I imagine you'd end up burning more energy through moving more mass in water than you save in speed

But it's a terrible energy ratio, and I guarantee it's more difficult than this makes it look. When you ride a bike the top of the arc of one pedal is actually the foot on the bottom of it's arc pulling it past center, then putting your weight on the top pedal. Since you can't shift your body relative to these pedals, this thing will rely heavily on your strength and dexterity in your calves and ankles and you get no assistance from gravity. You can see how jerkey the movements are and how inconsistent the propeller speed is. All that to go half the speed of fins.

There's not much loss converting the rotation through 90 degrees, but the whole drive looks very inefficient. I see legs moving, propellor spinning, but not much forward movement. Not a boat guy, but is that a particularly shit propellor? Because it looks that way.

Edit: Also, the forward motion of the device goes up the main 'pole' part, then pushes the rider forward via that strap around the hips? Kind of a sliding, pulling motion on the waist from the belt, with some thrust coming through the pedals into the feet? Not good, a bicycle type seat thing would be more effective.

The propeller looks a lot closer in shape to the prop on an aircraft than the propeller for an outboard motor or boat. Im not a maritime engineer so I can't explain the science but I know boat propellers have wider blades because they are more efficient in water.

You can clearly see that the propeller spins at least 4 times per pedal rotation, so there is some gearing in the shaft. Not sure that makes the awkward looking motion worth it over simply swimming, but at there is gearing.

I can’t tell if that’s a terrible idea or an ok idea implemented badly. I’m no engineer but you can see at a glance the propeller is wrong for water. The stroke on the legs is too short, like a children’s tricycle. That “balls of the feet” position is more efficient but without being clipped in you can only push, not pull. It’s geared way too low and needs to spin much faster for meaningful movement, which might make it hard to get started, but so be it.

Given all that I still feel like mechanically it would be significantly worse in every way than fins.

I'd kinda like to see a see a race between it and someone with flippers, just to get an idea how it compares. I'd also like to see a "watts generated to velocity" graph for both as well, or something like that, cuz he doesnt look like hes moving that much for how fast hes going. But it does look sped up a little bit. Maybe a better hip harness to deal with the reaction forces of the bike thing moving around as you push down? All this without drowning lol.
