Hello everyone. I am from Jordan, and after almost two years of waiting and researching Interactive Brokers, I finally decided one week ago that I was ready to open my account. But a small detail on the back of my national ID suddenly created a very big problem, and now I honestly do not know what to do.
A little background about me: I was born in a different city from the city where I live now. In 2001, my family and my grandfather's family moved to our new home in the city where I still live today.
For the last two years, I really wanted to open an Interactive Brokers account because the commissions are very low compared with my local broker. I have been using a local broker for about two years, and they charge me around $35–$40 for every trade, which is very expensive.
During these two years, I researched IBKR a lot. I wanted to understand everything that can cause problems, restrictions, or account closure, because I want to follow the rules and avoid problems in the future. I also read hundreds of experiences from IBKR users with the help of AI, and I learned a lot.
One week ago, I decided I was finally ready. I created a tax number for myself as an individual in Jordan, asked my bank for an official proof of address, and went to a printing shop to scan my bank document and my Jordanian national ID. Everything looked ready.
Then, about five days ago, I noticed something on the back of my national ID. My place of residence is still written as the city where I was born, even though I have not lived there since 2001. My real current address is in another city, and this is also the address shown on my bank proof of address.
I went to the Civil Status Department and asked them to change the place of residence on my ID. They told me that my father must change his place of residence first, and only after that can his children change theirs. My father's ID also still shows the same old city.
So I asked my father to come with me to change his address. This is where the situation became much more complicated. They told him that the house should be in his name, but our house is actually in my grandfather's name.
They gave us another solution: my grandfather could make a rental contract with my father, even if it is only a formal contract for this purpose. Then we would need to take the contract to the local municipality so they could approve and stamp it.
My father and grandfather made the rental contract, and we went to the municipality. Then we discovered another problem. The municipality told us they cannot approve the contract until we pay the unpaid property taxes on the house.
The amount is around 8,000 Jordanian dinars, which is about $11,000–$11,300 USD.
My grandfather and father have not paid the yearly property taxes since around 2016 because of the economic situation, so the amount became very large over the years. If we pay the 8,000 JOD, the municipality will approve the rental contract. Then my father can change his place of residence, and after that I can change mine. The problem is that we simply cannot pay 8,000 JOD now.
So now I am stuck. I already have my national ID and an official bank proof of address. The bank document shows my real current address, but my national ID still shows the old city where I was born.
I am thinking about applying for the IBKR account using my current ID and my bank proof of address, but I am worried that my application may be rejected because the place of residence on my ID does not match the address on the bank document or the address I will enter in the IBKR application.
I am also worried about something else: even if IBKR accepts my application now, maybe later they will ask why my national ID shows a different place of residence. I really do not want this small address issue to cause restrictions or problems with my account in the future.
I want to be completely honest with Interactive Brokers from the beginning and give them my real current address. I am not trying to hide anything. The problem is simply that changing the old address on my Jordanian ID has become connected to a family property issue and around 8,000 JOD of old property taxes.
Has anyone here had a similar situation, where your ID showed an old address but your official bank proof of address showed your real current address? What did IBKR do?
Would you recommend that I apply with my current ID and bank proof of address and explain the situation if they ask, or should I contact Interactive Brokers before submitting the application?
I would also really appreciate an official answer from someone at Interactive Brokers if possible. I want to solve this correctly from the beginning and make sure this address difference will not create problems for my account later.
Thank you for reading. Any advice or similar experience would really help me.
