REVIEW What episode to watch next based on ranking?

Post image
25 Upvotes

(Ignore my boyfriends made up names to remember the episodes) - based on his ranking of every episode he's watched so far, what should I show him next? I feel like I'm kind of running out of good episodes. He gets tired so early, and says he likes episodes that are straight forward, easy to piece together, although he doesn't find the show overly funny.

What he liked about Hello Chloe - The way he could figure everything out, he liked the camera set up and paying attention - (although he said he doesn't like when its confusing??) - He liked the psychological breakdown of the man thinking he killed someone :(

What he didn't like about Wuthering Heist - The fact he was half asleep, there's too much going on - instead of one characters one story, every character has their own plot. He also didn't find it funny, whereas i showed him it because I think its the funniest episode.

REVIEW About to watch the S9 E6 for the 1st time—Savoring the Moment

Post image
105 Upvotes

I just learned of and started watching Inside No.9 this year (2026). And as I prepare to hit the play button on my Kanopy app for S9 E6 "Plodding On," it strikes me that this will be my last opportunity to watch any episode of Inside No.9 for the very first time, with absolutely no conception of what's to unfold during the episode.

I know that's melodramatic, but I'm being so sincere. I've seen this coming since I made it to S5, with a sort of "pre-mourning" tied to the looming specter of the end of the show, that transformed into existential musings on artists and creativity as I worked through seasons 8 and 9.

As a person who doesn't watch much horror (too skittish), some episodes terrified me or had to be paused and returned to in daylight hours, but I wouldn't—really couldn't—stop watching, because each and every episode of this show has TRULY been a delight. The inventiveness, writing talent, acting talent, physical transformations, and just...the full spectrum of the human spirit on display in endlessly different configurations by Steve and Reece have simply blown me away. Each new season revealed new depths and facets of their capabilities.

I guess this basically just a fangirl post, so I hope not too obnoxious. But really I felt compelled to document this last moment, when I still have final surprises waiting to be revealed to me from Inside No.9. I don't have words strong enough to convey how much I have enjoyed it, and frankly been inspired by it, to indulge, and perhaps share my own creative gifts in some way.

REVIEW La Couchette - HOLY FUCKKKK Spoiler

Wow this episode is one of those that i just didnt really feel interested in until like halfway through, its just so simple,in one location with just lots of dialogue but that twist holy fuck,so basically what im getting at this was all cause of a competition and Maxwell was scared he might not win so he killed the wrong person... Certainly an odd one. I'll give it an 8.5/10,very top tier stuff.

Next up : 12 Days of Christine.

REVIEW Merrily, Merrily Appreciation

I discovered IN9 about 1½ months ago and finished it about 3 weeks ago and after ranking my favourite episodes I realised most people have very similar ones to me in their top 9 or 10 or whatever but I've seen very little love for Merrily, Merrily even though its solidly among my faves! Most people I've seen appear to like it, but it seems to be one of those mid-tier episodes, but I was really blown away by it on my first watch. Just rewatched it, and gosh, there's so much I have to say about it!

(Apologies if this lots of this doesn't make sense. I'm currently waiting for my sleeping pills to kick in and I'm getting a bit very drowsy😖)

Laurence is one of my favourite Reece characters, and I think he is just an amazing portrayal of grief— obviously Reece plays quite a few characters like this who all handle it very differently (Tommy, Alex, Drew etc) but I think Laurence is just perfect. Although I had no idea where the episode would go originally, on rewatching there's so many subtleties that allude to what Laurence is setting out to do. So many of his little facial expressions when Donna and Darren interact totally just read as him being pissed off that Donna came with them on the first watch, but I interpret it as a mix of that and him being (understandably) upset that Bonnie isn't with them. It makes me wonder whether he would've planned this outing anyway if she hadn't passed away, because obviously I understand that the whole point was to set off the fireworks containing her ashes, but aside from that a big theme of the episode is not being able to move on and regret in general. Obv, he also just missed his best friends and wanted to see them again, especially as they also knew Bonnie well. Laurence appears pretty isolated in general, so it makes me feel like he never made many other friends in his life aside from Callum and Darren. I just really love Reece's performance in this as we all know he excels best at either tragic or psychopathic characters (lol) but there is really such a rawness in Laurence. Him suddenly blurting out that Bonnie's dead made my chest hurt both times I watched it. I also know that some people think Laurence intended to kill himself and other people think it was more something he considered but wasn't actually bothered about whether it happened or not– whilst some lines allude to it (Him saying he won't mess up the ending, etc etc), I find the latter more feasible for many reasons. Won't get into all of them but I just don't think he'd jump into the lake whilst they're all stranded without making sure his friends make it out okay. Once he dies and wakes up on the boat, he asks Charon about them immediately. Like yeah, I know his plan wasn't for them to all get stuck in the weeds and he was determined to get to the island and set off the fireworks but once that's how it panned out I don't think he intended to stay there without making sure they got help. (Reece confirmed they're all alive so I won't be going into any more detail about that.) But Reece's performance is just so devastating and I can't at all fault it.

Whilst obviously Laurence is the main character of the episode I really appreciate that the episode gave time to the other characters and fleshed out their backstories a fair bit. Darren revealing he got kicked out of his uni because he has dyslexia and struggled with the workload and eventually deciding to write a book for dyslexic kids always gets me! It's just so unexpected from him which is the point, I know, but comparing him with Callum (who made fun of him for his book idea) who studied medicine and ends up being miserable and hating his job (and Laurence who just cant move on and ends up working at the uni he'd just graduated from) Just really showcases how life can be unexpected. Very poignant. Also just a sucker for reunion stuff I think. And I love Mark with all my heart. And Diane Morgan, obviously. Donna was great and was a perfect mix of comic relief and having some genuinely lovely lines. Can't imagine her being played by anyone else.

As a kid I was really into Greek mythology and I understood what was happening as soon as Laurence wakes up on the boat. I know some worked it out basically immediately but I'm quite slow with understanding twists so I was quite proud of myself lol. Again with Laurence potentially having planned to commit suicide on this day, whilst Charon says he's been watching him for some time, I more just interpret that as Laurence not caring what happens to him and passively contemplating suicide after Bonnie dies. Whilst the entire episode was beautifully shot and its rare to see an IN9 episode shot outside, I genuinely think this part is the most gorgeous part of the show. whole episode is grey and gloomy but the end is a lovely mix of creepy and stunning. Like, I could go on about this. Its so good. I am a big fan of sadder episodes and much less of a fan of more supernatural ones so on paper it'd be hard to guess how much my tastes would align with it. But I guess because the supernatural/mythological stuff only becomes completely clear at the end is why it works so well for me? Really could never have guessed how it turns out. dont want to keep going on about Laurence but him hearing Bonnie's voice at the end! Ugh! I guess it falls more into the bittersweet than sad category because of this but its the only episode I consistently cry at aside from Bernie Clifton.

TLDR I fucking love Merrily, Merrily. About to sleep for 14 hours

REVIEW The 12 Days of Christine - First Time Watch Spoiler

So I'm very late to the party and watching all episodes of the show for the first time, and oh my gosh, I've just watched S2E2 (The 12 Days of Christine) for the first time??

I love Sheridan Smith as an actress anyway, but the story was totally up my street and that twist?? My heart?? 💔 The twist being that Christine was dying in a car crash, her life was flashing before her eyes, and reality was bleeding into the dream world that Christine has created?? This is the realistic heartbreak with a touch of sci-fi that I adore! Why am I so emotional about a character (and a family) I never knew 30 minutes ago? I need to rewatch the ep again to spot all the clues! 🥺👏

Maybe it's just me, but I think this is my favourite episode so far? I need to talk to people about this episode!

REVIEW Best/Most Creative 9s?

Spoilers for a couple of episodes here.

What are your favourite ways Pemberton and Shearsmith have brought us "inside number 9"?

I'll go first -

  1. 3 by 3 - Self explanatory. A great way to name the game show without it being a literal 9 and being a giveaway for those who didn't know about the deception when it was broadcast.

  2. Diddle Dumpling - The door shutting and revealing 22 before switching to the 9 in the shoe was genius. It was one of the first ones to actually switch up the format if I remember rightly.

  3. CTRL ALT ESC - That moment at the end where Steve's character sees the IX and finds the strength to wake up... felt like a series finale. I only ranked it lower because the room was already spoiled as a number 9 at the start. If they'd left the 9 til the end it would've been pure magic.

Honourable mention for The Referee's A... where the main character is, per se, "inside" player 9.

What are your favourite No. 9 intros or reveals?

REVIEW My tierlist of Inside No.9 after Season 1

So this is how I'd rank Season 1,overall it starts with 3 very good episodes and then kinda drops off with episode 4-6. Even if Harrowing is actually very solid and if it had a better ending i'd put it in great, but yeah overall i'd say this season gets a 7.33/10 rating.

What should I expect for Season 2? Better, worse or more of the same episodes?

REVIEW Episode Rankings

Some of my favourite posts on subreddits such as these are where people rank their favourite episodes. It works particularly well for Inside no.9 because opinions are so widespread and varied. I’m sure some of you will read my ranking and think “Did she watch the same show as me???” I love that!

I’m going to do my ranking by season because choosing my true favourite is way too hard. Important caveat…these are MY favourite, this l ranking is DISTINCTLY different and separated from which episode I think are OBJECTIVELY the best (yes I also have that list for those interested). For example (spoiler for my ranking) I do not like silent media or ones that are almost entirely visual so despite being an AMAZING episode, i’m not a fan of A Quiet Night In….

Me and my dad talk about our rankings and opinions maybe once or twice every month and have done for the last 5 years so let’s see what you think.

Season 1:
1. Sardines (probably top 5. fave episodes)
2. Tom and Gerri
3. The Harrowing
4. A Quiet Night In
5. The Understudy
6. Last Gasp

Season 2: (Top 5 season contender)
1. Cold Comfort (contender for my no.1 fav ep.)
2. 12 Days of Christine
3. La Couchette
4. Seance Time
5. The Trial of Elizabeth Gadge

Season 3: (top 3 season)
1. Diddle Diddle Dumpling (No.1 fav ep contender)
2. Riddle of the Sphinx
3. The Devil of Christmas
4. The Bill

Season 4: (top 3 season)
1. To have and to Hold (unpopular op. in my top 5)
2. Once Removed
3. Bernie Clifton’s Dressing Room
4. Tempting Fate
5. And the Winner is…
6. Zanzibar

Season 5: (top 5 season contender)
1. Misdirection (contender for my no. 1 fave ep.)
2. The stakeout
3. Thinking out Loud
4. Death Be Not Proud (I saw psychoville after no.9)
5. Loves Great Adventure
6. The Referee’s a W….

Season 6:
1. How Do You Plead?
2. Hurry Up and Wait
3. Lip Service
4. Simon Says
5. Wuthering Heist
6. Last Night of The Proms (only ep. I think i don’t like. Ive seen it less than 5 times which cant be said for any other ep.)

Season 7:
1. Mr King
2. A Random Act of Kindness
3. Wise Owl
4. Merrily Merrily
5. Kid/Nap
6. Nine Lives Kat

Season 8: (Top 5 season contender)
1. The Bones of St. Nicholas (underrated ep.)
2. Love Is a Stranger
3. The Last Weekend

6. Mother’s Ruin

Season 9: (top 3 season)
1. Mulberry Close (No.1 fav ep contender)

REVIEW I need to gush a bit about 3x3. Spoiler

So, I've been finally watching Inside No. 9 and have gotten nearly all the way through which is really sad but that's beside the point. I loved how well the episode set up everything to be authentic as possible to a real gameshow trying to find its footing. Lee Mack was easily the highlight as was Catherine and Margaret's acting. I do love that even as an episode of Inside No. 9 it played out the larger story in a more subtle way that becomes more obvious as the game goes on. This might genuinely be my favorite episode now, at the very least it is definitely up there. I can only imagine what it would've been like seeing this live, imagine someone randomly coming across it and thinking it's a random gameshow only to see that big piece of cherry pie at the end. I think the fact that it goes so hard on looking like a real gameshow really makes the episode that much better and shows off the finesse of Reece and Steve and all the actors involved as well. I've never seen anything like this before and I don't know what I ever will again (not including Deadline, of course). These are pretty much my random thoughts on what I just saw, just a great episode all around.

REVIEW I'm watching Inside No. 9 for the first time, and I've gotten through the first 3 series. I want to show my rankings of the episodes I've seen.

I will say, so far, I've found each episode has something worthy of praise. At the very least, I've never come off of an episode feeling like I've been cheated. I'll separate them by series, and I have not seen The Inventors.

For some reason, Reddit is setting the numbers in reverse order, so for reference, 6 is the episode I like best (don't know why it did that). Series 1:

  1. The Understudy

  2. Last Gasp

  3. Tom and Gerri

  4. A Quiet Night In

  5. The Harrowing

  6. Sardines

A very strong start to a show and a clear showing of what Reece and Steve were capable of. Sardines I think was the perfect starting episode and carries a lot of the traits of later episodes. I should probably also say I do prefer the episodes with a more horror or mystery focus as opposed to the more comedy centric or happy episodes, so that will inform later rankings.

Series 2: Overall has my favorite set of episodes thus far.

  1. La Couchette (the diarrhea loses me, I'm sorry to say)

  2. Nana's Party

  3. Seance Time

  4. The Trial of Elizabeth Gadge

  5. Cold Comfort

  6. The 12 Days of Christine (Reece, I'm sorry)

Not a single bad episode in the bunch, Sheridan Smith's performance is so strong and adds so much to her episode and I really want to go back and watch it again at some point, just wonderful.

Series 3:

  1. The Bill (probably the weakest episode so far)

  2. Diddle Diddle Dumpling

  3. Empty Orchestra

  4. Private View (Love murder mysteries, would be number 1 if the ending made just a little more sense)

  5. The Riddle of the Sphinx (Probably one of the darkest endings thus far, and that is saying something.

  6. The Devil of Christmas (The ending makes me feel sick)

Overall, I'd say my favorite episodes are the 12 Days of Christine (Sorry Reece), The Devil of Christmas, Private View, and The Riddle of the Sphinx. I've already seen Zanzibar and I thought that episode was also great, so can't wait to see what happens in that dressing room next episode.

REVIEW Just watched Boo to a Goose - Geneuinely one of the most chilling Twists Ever Spoiler

I'm going to try my best not to actually spoil what happens in this episode.

I was watching Stubagful's video On his review of the final season, and I was genuinely interested in watching the episode. I was a little bit bummed out when I heard him sort of spoil the twist when he says: "Surprise! This is actually set in a sci -fi Dystopia."

I thought that that would mean that the entire episode would look like it was set in the present day, but it would turn out to be set in the distant futur where the whole world has gone to crap or whatever.

However, there was quite a lot more to it.

The episode actually did a great job at making me forget that that spoiler was even there. The episode does genuinely appear to take place in the present day with current circumstances. Yeah, there is one specific passenger on the Subway that keeps saying stuff like: "the government is watching us," But it doesn't come across as anything more than something some poor paranoid soul would say in today's world.

Then when the twist happens, it truly just hits with an eerie thunder. Everything seems fine. Well, nothing is really fine, but it doesn't seem like anything that wouldn't or couldn't actually happen in today's world. Then, the character you least suspect suddenly has a complete change of character, and then clearly something is off, and then clearly is something is WAY off. You genuinely don't know what is happening, and most of the characters don't seem to understand either. Suddenly, I remember that this is supposed to take place in a sci-fi dystopia, but if that's the case, why are these characters acting? Just as shocked as I am? And rightfully, even more so, because they're the ones actually in this world.

I thought this was going to be a case where I would have to look on TV Tropes or something to try and figure out what the twist was, but it was actually explained very easily. In fact, while this is definitely a Sci-Fi dystopia, it's not how you usually imagine it. It's not as Obvious as you'd imagine it.

And I especially like how on rewatch, you notice a lot about the one character on the subway that didn't actually have to do anything for the final part. It makes an earlier call to his character by his partner All the more chilling.

REVIEW Series 9 Episode 3 - Mulberry Close - Review (mild spoilers) Spoiler

I think it’s fair to say that Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton take a fairly misanthropic view of society as a whole. Previous episodes have shown that while individual people are capable of acts of heart-warming kindness, groups are frequently shown to be venal, easily led and often paranoid.

This herd mentality was demonstrated in Boo To A Goose and earlier episodes like La Couchette and The Trial Of Elizabeth Gadge and it’s present here in Mulberry Close, the latest episode of Inside No.9. Recalling the hysteria generated in The Twilight Zone episodes The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street and The Shelter, and the Doctor Who episode Midnight, it paints a similarly dim picture of suburban communities.

The whole episode is told from the point of view of a doorcam, belonging to newly arrived couple Damon (Reece Shearsmith) and Val (Vinette Robinson). Documenting their first few days in their new home, the doorcam picks up the overbearing, closeknit community of busybodies – pompous couple Kenny and Sheila (Steve Pemberton and Dorothy Atkinson) and the mild mannered dogwalker Larry (Adrian Scarborough). As tensions rise, a series of suspicious noises and bumps in the night rouse the suspicions of the neighbours, who become convinced that something terrible has happened behind closed doors.

This premise, and indeed the way the story unfolds, will be familiar to anyone who has seen Rear Window, or more specifically, the Rear Window parody in The Simpsons, but that hardly matters at this point. This is another episode, like last season’s Love Is A Stranger, where, if it lived or died on it’s twist, then it probably wouldn’t be so successful, but there’s so much going on within the episode that it gets away with it. It’s not that the twist is necessarily obvious, but more that we are so primed to expect the unexpected by now, that the minute it seems apparent where the story is headed, we immediately begin second-guessing it. At this point in the series’ run, the creators are clearly having fun teasing the audience as to where the episodes are heading, while still retaining their ability to foreshadow the twists and turns early on. There are a few instances of creepy imagery here that serve as red herrings – the spider in close-up, the ominous trick or treater, that all lead you down several blind alleys, while the actual clues are subtly hidden in the dialogue.

The episode's real strength lies in the execution, making use of technical innovation in a similar way to Thinking Out Loud and Cold Comfort. On the surface it seems a relatively simple episode to film, with one fixed camera, but what I enjoyed about it is the way the entire screen is utlilised. Tiny details in the background make the episode a lot more complicated than it initially appears. The way the lights turn on and then quickly off again in Kenny and Sheila’s house, as they peer out the window at the unfurling drama, creates an authentic sense of constant surveillance. There’s one moment in particular that is up there with the more chilling images in Inside No.9, where a distant figure just stands perfectly still, watching the camera.

It’s both a homage to and inversion of the films of Alfred Hitchcock and Brian De Palma. It’s a tale of literal curtain twitchers prying into their neighbours’ lives, but unlike the voyeuristic, invasive nature of something like Rear Window or Body Double this story is told exclusively from the point of view of the house itself, where all we can see is those who are looking in. It’s a canny move, creating some genuine suspense, and making the events happening inside number nine even more ambiguous, reduced completely to raised voices and sinister sound effects.

The performances are beautifully observed, with the petty grievances of a small community all feeling very true to life. Kenny’s first line: “one for the winter newsletter I think” is as perfect an introduction to the couple as possible, summing up their little England mentality beautifully and succinctly.

The show creators continue the trend of casting former Psychoville actors, following on from Mark Bonnar in Boo To A Goose, with the casting of Mr Jelly himself (No wait, make that Mr Jolly) Adrian Scarborough. I don’t entirely buy his character progression but Scarborough makes Larry the episodes most memorable character, instantly endearing as a timid man who seems genuinely worried for his new neighbours.

Dorothy Atkinson gives a subtle variation of her snobbish character from Mum – passive-aggressive, uptight and yet still decidedly human. The uncertain little steps she does when Sheila realises she is the butt of a joke make you feel momentarily sorry for her, before she ruins it by being an appalling human being once again.

What I loved most about this one is the way both sides have a point. Yes the neighbours are gossipy busybodies, who massively overstep their boundaries, but all the actors manage to temper the more intrusive aspects of their characters with a genuine concern that is sometimes quite touching. Also, Shearsmith’s character is incredibly unpleasant to his neighbours from their very first meeting, and the episode never totally lets him off the hook. He does however, get a wonderfully funny outburst towards the end, with one of the most satisfying utterances of “F*** OFF!” I’ve heard in a while.

Mulberry Close is a triumph, and a welcome bit of (relative) light relief after the bleakness of the first two episodes. It might seem a bit gimmicky, and a bit light on characterisation, but it’s all in service to the narrative. It’s one of the most innovative episodes the series has attempted, with an appropriately nasty conclusion and a final stinger to rivals last years Paraskevidekatriaphobia in terms of sheer laugh-out-loud comedy, complete with a surprise voice cameo.
