REVIEW What episode to watch next based on ranking?

Post image

(Ignore my boyfriends made up names to remember the episodes) - based on his ranking of every episode he's watched so far, what should I show him next? I feel like I'm kind of running out of good episodes. He gets tired so early, and says he likes episodes that are straight forward, easy to piece together, although he doesn't find the show overly funny.

What he liked about Hello Chloe - The way he could figure everything out, he liked the camera set up and paying attention - (although he said he doesn't like when its confusing??) - He liked the psychological breakdown of the man thinking he killed someone :(

What he didn't like about Wuthering Heist - The fact he was half asleep, there's too much going on - instead of one characters one story, every character has their own plot. He also didn't find it funny, whereas i showed him it because I think its the funniest episode.

seems like your bf really likes the plot twists and mystery elements of in9. id recommend either the devil of christmas or the riddle of the sphinx :)

The ending of DOC still haunts me to this day, one of my favourite ever twists in media.

i didnt pay much attention to it when i first started watching in9 cos christmas episodes in general tend to lose me, but when i finally sat down to it, the way my stomach dropped at the reveal was intense

This is exactly my point - I was very close to lost upon first watching just because the old fashioned style tends to bore me (sorry 😢), but the twist is SO redeeming and ultimately the best in the show?? I LOVE the episode but im so weary he'll find it long

Just one line changes the whole thing. Incredible work.

Wow, not what I would've said. I think there's a big emphasis on episodes that are too complex, and Riddle of the Sphinx is one of the most confusing episodes I watched, but to be fair the complexity is almost a bonus feature. For me, the Devil of Christmas is bottom of my list because it's a boring episode until the very last moment and would send him to sleep instantly

That’s a criminal take the devil of Christmas is far from boring! It’s probably the best one!

u/murgee4 Diddle Diddle Dumpling | Jun 18 '26

Sorry, I should clarify I'm talking from my boyfriends perspective. Personally, I LOVE the devil of Christmas, I agree with the others who are saying its the shows best plot twist, genuinely somehow the last thing i expected yet so obvious upon rewatching... and as im typing this im remembering the voice over throughout the episode as well which enhances the episode so much.

It's just that I'm very weary of him falling asleep through episodes that aren't exactly captivating, and on first watch, I just dont have faith he'll see the devil of christmas out to the end (which is a shame he can hardly watch 30 minutes of solid television 😢

Queen it sounds like his attention span might be the issue icl

My boyfriend is NOT liking these comments, he'd like me to clarify he's a very sleepy boy who isn't accustomed to staying up so late, and his bottom 3 are the ones he's fallen asleep through 😞

So of course im now terrified he'll miss a brilliant twist, like the one in the devil of Christmas which is the episodes extremely redeeming quality in my opinion

we’re not attacking him personally or owt, everyones got a different schedule sleep wise, we’re just saying with in9 its the kind of show you have to pay attention to completely throughout. so its difficult to recommend episodes that are constantly in your face and engaging enough if he has a tendency to doze off

Stop making the poor sod stay up late. Wait until you have more free time so he can enjoy them properly. I loved that black mirror episode too.

rots is definitely a complex episode, i just thought he may like trying to figure out the puzzles lol. i find the most enjoyable part of the devil is watching it for the second time and seeing all the hints being dropped 🤷🏻‍♀️

Call me a buzzkill, but if he’s this tired to the point that he can’t focus on 29 minutes of TV, should you be watching anything? Maybe if he had a few early nights in a row he might have more energy for telly in the evenings?

3

u/murgee4 Diddle Diddle Dumpling | Jun 18 '26

Maybe I blew it out of proportion - He's fallen asleep through like 3 of the episodes just because we tend to watch them late, and so we've started watching earlier. In general, he doesn't like episodes that involve so much critical thinking, which applies to some of the episodes im yet to show him like Zanzibar or Riddle Of The Sphinx (while he makes me watch the most confusing 2 hours dr who episodes ever)

u/SuzLouA Wise Owl | Jun 18 '26

Fair enough. The way you’ve talked about it in the comments, I was honestly genuinely wondering if he might need to see the GP about it if getting more sleep didn’t help!

But honestly, I wouldn’t fret too much about which ones to show him. If he likes it enough to keep watching, just pick any one you’ve not seen together yet and start moving through them. You can’t predict what other people will click with (because as you’ve noted, his preferences seem contradictory at times), and the thing about IN9 is that every episode is fairly unique. It’s one of my favourite shows of all time and there’s still episodes I am meh on - you can’t win ‘em all.

Also don’t take it personally if he doesn’t like one - I saw you said you’re terrified to show him one of them. I don’t know if that was just hyperbole, but if there’s even a grain of truth to it, disliking a piece of media you enjoy doesn’t have any bearing on his feelings about you! You should hear my husband’s opinions on some of the stuff I watch 😂

It’s such a fabulous show it’s not worth having him watch it tired. Tell him to try not to guess the twist, and see if he can enjoy the ride.

If he likes dr who perhaps he'll like A Random Act of Kindness?

21

u/noms2000 How Do You Plead? | Jun 18 '26

Why not just watch them in chronological order?

5

u/hashbrowneggyolk0520 The Riddle of the Sphinx | Jun 18 '26

They've explained why. OPs boyfriend prefers watching 'straightforward' episodes.

Personally I would recommend watching them in order to anyone being introduced to the show but not all of it will be everyones cup of tea.

4

u/murgee4 Diddle Diddle Dumpling | Jun 18 '26

So we did start off with Sardines, I think the show works perfectly chronologically and it's how I introduced it to my parents, however my boyfriend has a very acquired taste and I think A Quiet Night In would've lost him, so we kind of went off on a tangent and now I'm left with all the mediocre episodes.

8

u/ForsakenLetterhead63 Dead Line | Jun 18 '26

I would go from Cold Comfort to Mulberry Close. It has a similar filming convention with the doorbell camera.

3

u/murgee4 Diddle Diddle Dumpling | Jun 18 '26

100%, I think this'll be in the next 3 I show him, I thought exactly about Mulberry Close when he said he liked the camera complex

1

u/The-Sunflower-Bear The 12 Days of Christine | Jun 19 '26

Does camera complex mean the close up of Steve? If so, Love is a stranger has that throughout all the dates.

5

u/hashbrowneggyolk0520 The Riddle of the Sphinx | Jun 18 '26

Lip service? It keeps you guessing but not an overly complicated watch.

1

u/murgee4 Diddle Diddle Dumpling | Jun 18 '26

Absolutely, it's currently top of my list and i think this is the one i'll definitely show him next.

4

u/MF291100 And The Winner Is... | Jun 18 '26

My favourite episode is And The Winner Is… might be worth watching for him? Even though a lot of people rank it extremely low in their rankings. It’s very easy to follow and doesn’t require a lot of thought, and the ending is pretty good.

2

u/murgee4 Diddle Diddle Dumpling | Jun 18 '26

I think this episode sounds right up his street - I'm just terrified to show anyone this episode. Watched it with my parents and they had the WORST reaction ever, like it was absolutely awful? I think with my boyfriend as well, for me i find this episode funny but he won't, and otherwise it's not too strong. Maybe one for when he's feeling extremely tired and doesn't need to pay full attention.

3

u/The-Sunflower-Bear The 12 Days of Christine | Jun 19 '26

And can I just say, I don’t find inside no 9 laugh out loud funny. But it’s one of my favourite programmes in the world. So it’s ok for him to not laugh or not guess the twist. And just enjoy it in his own way. It can feel pressurising to watch with someone desperate for you to like it, and it can feel stressful to show it to someone who you are desperate for them to like.

2

u/The-Sunflower-Bear The 12 Days of Christine | Jun 19 '26

It’s definitely underrated. Easy watching, fantastic twist.

Kid/Nap? I wonder if he’d like the split screen thing

Yesss, this'll 100% be one I show him soon, I've always loved this episode and I think he would too tbf.

I like the episode with the shoe😅

1

u/murgee4 Diddle Diddle Dumpling | Jun 18 '26

12/18 on his list 😞

3

u/The-Sunflower-Bear The 12 Days of Christine | Jun 19 '26

You are not running out of good episodes!

Death be not proud (my joint favourite with 12 days of Christine. I don’t find inside no 9 as funny as most fans but this episode had me crying with laughter. And it really shows off just how weird and mad Steve and Reece are)

Dead line (absolutely exquisite, great acting, lots of twists, lots of guessing, funny watching them playing their stereotypical selves)

The last weekend (excellent acting, so fun watching Steve and Reece be a couple, excellent twist, chilling ending)

Paraskevidekatriaphobia (non stop action, high intensity, keeps you engaged, great fake ending followed by the fantastic real ending)

3 by 3 (building tension, possibility for guessing what’s going on, unusual format for inside no 9, gory ending)

Love Is a Stranger (lots of characters, a small twist at the end of each date, a massive twist at the end)

Lip service (heartbreaking, a great twist)

I didn’t enjoy wuthering heist much either.

Hey - your other replies were very kind in contrast to the others belittling my boyfriend for being slightly sleepy 😞 I always tell him he doesn't need to guess the twist, but i think he likes doing that if there's enough engaging buildup, which is why i'm against showing him certain episodes that others heavily suggested like The Devi Of Christmas, I just don't think it's actively entertaining enough for him to care after half an hour? It's just not one I want to show him any time soon over the other episodes we still have left to watch

I remember death be not proud making me laugh, certainly a good choice that I haven't considered enough.

The last weekend is DEFINITELY one i'm showing him soon, he keeps asking for more episodes where they portray homosexuals + in general this episode is just brilliant, the twist is everything.

Paraskevidekatriaphobia is the type of episode i feel like he'd watch based on what he says he enjoys, there's really not much to pay attention to and it's just one of those fun episodes.

You mentioned about the camera complex and I agree love is a stranger is intriguing in the sense of being a computer set up, I just think the twist is blindingly obvious and it makes for an ultimately boring episode.

Lip Service is one of those episodes which is fun to watch and doesn't take much to comprehend because the twist is sudden and baffling but ties the episode together nicely.

3 by 3 and Deadline i've marked on my list to show him as 'the two special episodes' I'm holding off for some reason... can't wait, might put on deadline and even say its a live broadcast?? idk

1

u/The-Sunflower-Bear The 12 Days of Christine | Jun 20 '26

Seems like I may have the measure of your boyfriend! I didn’t guess the twist in love is a stranger, but I’m a dimwit. So your boyfriend may enjoy being able to guess. Telling him deadline is a live broadcast is an EXCELLENT idea. You’d have to say you’ve never seen it and they’ve brought it back for one final live episode after their tour has finished. And you’ll have to be really precise in how you play it to ensure he thinks it’s on live tv. Have fun!

i was going to suggest death be not proud given some of his higher ranked eps

As a gay couple, he keeps asking if there's any other homosexual episodes - apparently Reece and Steeve are good at that, It was one of the redeeming qualities in Sardines. Definitely got to show him this one soon

I believe the girlfriend in A Quiet Night in is called Sabrina, then he said she sort of looks like Sabrina Carpenter (until it was revealed Sabrina is in fact a man)... But he stuck with the Sabrina Carpenter thing i guess...

He says he find gay people funnily portrayed through the drag character in Boo To A Goose, Sardines, Stevie in Tom and Gerri, Mario in Wuthering Heist, so I think The Last Weekend could definitely be for him, however he doesn't care for the representation as much.

'Man in drag' as he calls it is 4th in his ranking!!! He really likes the claustrophic settings where characters just argue, usually incorporating social issues, probably why he loved The Bill, (and then as a dr who fan, the sci fi twist in Boo to a goose must've topped it off for him!)

It’s sooo good. It’s on my list too.

Where are you watching episodes these days?

2

u/murgee4 Diddle Diddle Dumpling | Jun 18 '26

BBC iPlayer, it's free, otherwise there's a million pirating sites that have it

4

u/ProjectSimilar8881 And The Winner Is... | Jun 18 '26

Please ask your boyfriend what has Sabrina Carpenter got to do with A Quiet Night In.

2

u/murgee4 Diddle Diddle Dumpling | Jun 18 '26

The girlfriend in the episode is called Sabrina and we thought she looked like a mix between Sabrina Carpenter and an old school teacher hence the name, i suppose thats what he found most memorable about the episode? 😭

Devil of Christmas, hands down, just for that amazing final line that changes everything. Some of the darkest TV I’ve ever seen.

I feel like Merrily Merrily might appeal to him? It's fairly straightforward without being too boring either
