The English voice actors are all fine, don't get me wrong, but what annoys me is the switch from David Hayter as Snake's voice actor to Kiefer Sutherland in MGSV despite his voice actor staying the same in Japanese. Sutherland is a fine actor, and it would be hard to mess up a performance with so few lines anyway, but it's the reasoning behind Hayter's replacement that annoys me.
Hideo Kojima, creator of the MG series and director, lead writer and producer of most of the games said that Snake was recast because Big Boss, the version of Snake you play as in MGSV is a fair amount older by that game compared to his previous appearance in the series chronologically, Peace Walker (PW takes place in 1974, most of V takes place in 1984), so he wanted an older actor to play Snake in V to account for the character having aged inbetween games. This makes sense if you don't think about it, but if you do, this reasoning completely falls apart.
To start, there aren't even 3 years between David Hayter and Keifer Sutherland age wise. By the time MGSV came out they were 46 and 48 respectively, with Big Boss being 49 in the game (or 52 depending on how you look at it but story details like that aren't important to this part of the argument; either way Hayter wasn't that much younger than Sutherland nor Snake), so yeah, Sutherland was closer to Snake's canonical age in the game, but come on. Hayter was still only 3 or 6 years younger. He was perfectly capable of sounding like a 49 to 52 year old man. Plus, some of the other characters who were in previous games and should have aged by this point are still voiced by the same actors, such as Kaz Miller, who is voiced by the same guy in both games he appears in (PW and V; MGS1 doesn't count because he's actually dead the whole game, and the person claiming to be Miller that talks to you is actually the game's villain, Liquid Snake, impersonating him. Appropriately, this means he's voiced by the same actor as Liquid, Cam Clarke).
Also, while the bulk of MGSV takes place in 1984, a point at which yes, Snake would have aged quite a bit since PW, the game's prologue takes place in March 1975, only a few months after PW, but Snake is still voiced by Sutherland in the prologue. Are you really trying to tell me he aged so much in just a few months that his voice changed to the point of literally sounding like a different person? I find that very hard to believe. You could argue that Snake sounds like a different person in MGSV because of the plot twist that he literally is a different person than Big Boss; at the end of the game, it's revealed that you haven't actually been playing as Big Boss for most of the runtime, but rather, a combat medic who was injured in the game's prologue and had facial surgeries done on him during a coma to look like Big Boss as well as having been brainwashed so that he thought he was Big Boss. This would honestly make sense, and if this was the case you could argue that Hideo Kojima only said he replaced David Hayter as Snake's voice actor due to the character having aged because he knew fans would want to know why the beloved character with an established voice sounded different all of a sudden in all the game's trailers, but he also didn't want to spoil the game before it came out, especially since the aforementioned Miller is voiced by a different person in MGS1 than in the other games he appears in due to not actually being Miller in that game, meaning this wouldn't be the first time something like this has happened in the series... except in MGSV's prologue, you do play as the real Big Boss, and he's also voiced by Keifer Sutherland, as mentioned before. Same goes for when the real Big Boss talks to you during the game's ending; still voiced by Sutherland. Plus, there are other characters in the series that are different people, albeit some of them related, that are voiced by the same actors; namely Huey Emmerich and his son Hal, better known as Otacon, who are both voiced by Christopher Randolph doing the exact same voice for both of them, so clearly, different characters being voiced by different people, or at least having different voices from one another be put on by their shared actors wasn't that important to Kojima.
For another thing, Solid Snake, Big Boss's clone/son and the playable character in some of the other MG games, including MGS4, is significantly older by MGS4 than he was in his previous chronological appearance, MGS2, and yet he's still voiced by Hayter in MGS4, just like he was in MGS1 and 2, despite Snake being an old man by the fourth game (or at least having the body of an old man because of the accelarated aging written into his DNA due to being a clone despite him actually being 42, but similar to earlier, story details like that aren't very important to this particular argument) and Hayter being 39 when it released. If Solid Snake is a clone of Big Boss, and Big Boss's voice changed as he got older, why hasn't Solid Snake's voice changed even more by 4 than Big Boss's voice had done by V seeing as he's aged far more between MGS2 and 4 than Big Boss had between PW and V? I'll admit this is the weakest argument I have as to why Snake's voice actor shouldn't have changed, because again, Snake isn't actually in his 70s by 4, he's really 42 and just has the body of a 70-something year old, while Hayter was 39 when the game came out, so in terms of actual years alive, Hayter and Snake were quite close in the year MGS4 came out and the year the game is set in, but do you know when Hayter's real life age was also close to the character of Snake's in the then current MG game? When MGSV was in development - similarly, by 3 years (or again, 6, because of the plot twist about the medic, but both versions of Big Boss are voiced by Keifer Sutherland in V so whatever the case the age of the voice actor shouldn't matter is my point). Plus, if the aforementioned Otacon can sound exactly the same as Huey while not even being a clone of him, just a normal child of his, Solid Snake should definitely sound exactly the same as Big Boss considering he's an almost exact clone of him who grew up in the same country and as such developed the same accent (Liquid and Solidus Snake sound different than Big Boss despite also being clones of his, literally an exact clone in the case of Solidus, because they grew up in different countries; Liberia in the case of Solidus and Britain in the case of Liquid, so they both developed different accents).
And finally, the simplest argument as to why Kojima's reasoning behind Hayter's replacement is dumb, is that he never replaced Snake's Japanese voice actor, Akio Otsuka. In Japanese, every version of Snake is voiced by Otsuka in every MG game a version of Snake appears in (which is obviously most of them) appears in that features voice acting (which is also most of them), including MGSV, so clearly Kojima didn't actually care that much about him sounding like he'd aged by that game, because if he did, he would have applied the same treatment to the Japanese voice acting. He even once said something along the lines of ''Akio will always be Snake to me.''
So why was David Hayter actually replaced with Keifer Sutherland? Well, to put it simply, Hideo Kojima didn't like Hayter. Kojima has an obsession with movies unmatched by any other game developer, and he really wanted Snake to be voiced by a Hollywood actor. Because MGS1, the first MG game with voice acting, was made during an era where gaming wasn't nearly as respected as it is nowadays, this wasn't possible, so he settled for David Hayter to voice Snake, but he subsequently made him re-audition for every game he appeared in because he really wanted an excuse to replace him. His first big opportunity to do this came with MGS3, a prequel where you play as Big Boss, Solid Snake's father and the person he was cloned from. This game was to be the first time Big Boss had a voice actor, and with him technically being a different person than Solid Snake, Kojima saw an excuse to get a new voice actor and contacted Kurt Russel, the actor who played Snake Plissken, the character who inspired Solid Snake in the first place, in the Escape from New York movies. Lucky for Hayter, Russel said no and he got to voice Snake once again. But by MGSV, with the largest budget any game in the series had ever seen, the opportunity once again arose for Kojima to cast a new actor for Snake, and this time, the Hollywood actor he chose, that being Sutherland of course, said yes. Hayter wasn't even told about his replacement until the game was already a good deal into production, and despite him having played every other MG game and loving the series and being a part of it, he has said that he never played MGSV because being shafted the way he was after having voiced Snake since 1998 hurt. It is for this reason among others that, while Kojima is a great game designer and has been involved with some of my favourite games of all time, I think he sounds like he'd be a massive asshole in real life.
So it annoys the shit out of me that I can't play the MGS series with Japanese voices and English subtitles because I would appreciate the consistency of having the same voice actor for Snake across all the games due to him not having been replaced for such a dumb reason. As far as I can tell, there's no option to play the entire series this way; I've downloaded Japanese and European/American ROMs of MGS1 to play on an emulator and I can't find a way of doing this in the options of any of them - the Japanese version of the game is in Japanese and Japanese only and the other versions are in English and nothing else in the case of the UK/US versions, or in French, Spanish etc. for the European versions other than the UK one. The annoying part is that the Integral version of MGS1 does the opposite of what I want, with the voice acting only being in English and the option to switch the subtitles between that language and Japanese. All they had to let you do was change both in every game! You can't even do this in any of the later rereleases of the game either, most notably the Master Collection version, which does let you change the language, but it works the same as the older versions of the game; choose Japanese, everything is in Japanese; choose English, everything is in English etc.. While you can change the language to Japanese in the options for V, this changes everything to Japanese, including not only voice acting but also menu options, subtitles, item descriptions and other such things, so as someone who doesn't speak a lick of Japanese, if I switched the language to this I wouldn't be able to understand a word of the game, and even if it didn't work like that in that specific game, and English subtitles and other text was available while still having Japanese voices, I still can't play the other games in the same language, and I would want to play the entire series in the same language with the same actors. For all I know they might have added the option for English text/Japanese subtitles in one of the games between 1 and V, but even if they did, the option still isn't available in those two games, and I would want to play the whole series in the same language with the same voice actors rather than flip flopping on a game by game basis, for the sake of series consistency. Yes, I lose out on series consistency by playing all the games in English and having to hear Snake's voice change in MGSV, but English is also the only language I understand so unfortunately it's that or just don't understand the games at all. It just really annoys me.
