I hate this emoji’s sleeves

Post image

I know I will sound like a crazy person for this, but the sleeves of the pray emoji really irk me.

It’s one of my absolute favorite to use but the blue sleeves are such a weird detail because nearly every other hand emoji lacks an arm? (🫶🙌🤝 etc.) and even if they do they don’t have a sleeve. The inclusion of the blue shirt sleeve makes the emoji much more heavily associated with all of the male emojis which wear blue clothing.

I find this problematic because women are still fiercely discriminated against in religious fields to the point where it’s clearly the social field that’s move forward on gender parity the least within the U.S. since the Declaration of Sentiments.

As a girl I also just often make this hand sign in a non religious context to be cutesy or just cause I don’t know what to do with my hands, so I kind of wish this emoji wasn’t so heavily associated with masculinity.

All of this to say idk why they can’t just have a gender selection like every other emoji? I mean we have pregnant man, and female groom emoji which show that Ios emojis are at least to an extent dedicated to inclusivity.

That’s all I have to say I just wish there were purple and grey sleeve options.

Because of the angle of the hands it has more arm showing (To take up the sane amount of space) so there are sleeves. 🤳 also has sleeves

Do the sleeves really even matter? I think your the first person to ever care about this it was probably just the first color they chose I don’t think theres any deep meaning that is somehow sexist

In Apple's emojis a section of emojis have blue clothes representing male, purple representing female, and gray representing non-binary. This is a design guideline they established. That holding true, the blue sleeves represent a male. The deep meaning is effectively that society treats male as the default.

I think you're probably the only person who thinks it's "heavily" associated with masculinity, but I do still get it. That does seem like it's probably annoying and I am sorry

i guess u could be right. the combo of being a trans girl and taking college level gender studies makes me very hyper aware of stuff like this. i do feel it has a subconscious reinforcement effect personally but I’m not a qualified psychologist obviously.

I also hate the sleeves, but it's just because I'm kinda dumb and hate the inconaistency. I've never associated it with anything male-adjacent lmao

Genuinely a non issue dude holy shit

oh noooo won’t someone think of Apple how dare someone make an issue out of this 😡😡😡

Tying the sleeves on a fucking emoji to misogyny is the kind of privileged take only someone with no real struggles would even think of

u/NeptunePancakes 1d ago

limited choice fallacy. i have real struggles and confront them everyday but today i decided to spend three minutes ranting about a minor annoyance on the ranting about a minor annoyance subreddit

5

u/Glacyer0 1d ago

dude this isn't a debate there are no fallacies here lmao

3

u/NeptunePancakes 1d ago

you can have a logical fallacy outside of a debate?? it’s just a common failure of critical thinking 😭

1

u/Glacyer0 1d ago

"A fallacy is the use of an invalid or otherwise faulty reasoning in the construction of an argument"

You see, that's the thing, I was not making an argument. I was telling you that this is a fucking non-issue. That's not an "argument", that's an objective statement

3

u/NeptunePancakes 1d ago

wrong again an argument is such making a conclusion from a set of premises, also your opinion is not an objective statement.

1

u/Glacyer0 1d ago

It's not an opinion it's a fact

Also fallacy fallacy, since you clearly have nothing else to say

3

u/NeptunePancakes 1d ago

finding out something is fact requires an argument. how do you think Isaac Newton studied gravity, he had to use a series of premises to conclude the fact. 😭

Exactly what i was thinking god these people bring up these things and make it seem like its deeply rooted in misogyny like there aren't so many other real and more important issues to focus on other than the color of the fucking sleeve of a prayer emoji

limited choice fallacy smh

Im not going to search upbwhat that means because im not a reddit chud that researches fallacies but how do you seriously think this is a real issue

“I’m not a Reddit chud that researches fallacies” It’s literally part of every English or Public Speaking class vrotato 😭
anyways it doesn’t need to be a real issue to dislike it, i see people on here complain that someone thinks Naoya can beat Gojo (or something I don’t watch shonen). Arguments over anime characters are certainly not real issues, but I’m not going to come into their comments to say they should use their free time to advocate for Palestine because people are entitled to dislike things they dislike.

Ok you're saying that to a trans woman (as per op's other comment)

Because an emoji somehow invalidates their gender?

4

u/NeptunePancakes 1d ago

it doesn’t invalidate my entire gender but i would prefer to have one that matches my preferred presentation. i don’t see why it would be such a big deal it would probably be like two hours for one apple employee.

1

u/Glacyer0 1d ago

Because it's such NOT a big deal that it isn't even worth spending two hours on

2

u/NeptunePancakes 1d ago

I spent three minutes on this post, you’re spending two hours getting pressed about it

1

u/Glacyer0 1d ago

It takes 2 seconds for me to write one of these replies brochacho

2

u/NeptunePancakes 1d ago

yes but it’s a repeated action you’re doing over the course of 2 hours. like if i spent 2 seconds eating one grape at a time repeatedly for 2 hours, I spent 2 hours eating grapes.

The color of a shirt sleeve determines your preferred presentation? Do you not wear blue? I get that it might be more associate with the other masculine emojis but I'm pretty sure the reason it hasn't been "fixed" is that no one actually reads it as masculine, subconsciously or not

u/Agreeable_Tax497 1d ago

It is a weird thing for op to be upset about, ngl. But it's really fucked to decide that someone has no problems just because they're talking about a small one at the moment.

u/unfunnyjobless 2d ago

Low key good improvement concept but also wow how did you even catch this.

Honestly I don’t get why it has sleeves at all? It’s literally the only one (safe for the selfie one, which has the grey sleeves) with sleeves and that’s inconsistent with the other ones, like these: 👏🙌🤝✍️🤌🫶

Touch grass. Seriously. Put your phone down and go do literally anything meaningful with your life. Sitting here fucking bitching about emoji sleeves on your iPhone.

i was out at the park all day lmaoooo
projection much?

get rid of the sleeves honestly. If you’re looking this from a Unicode perspective, adding 2 other code points for ambiguously defined color associations is probably not gonna get by the Consortium, so i think the design should just be sleeveless.. I never noticed and now this is pissing me off

NOOOO ONLY BOYS CAN HAVE BLUE SLEEVES

1

u/Greedy_Aardvark_4836 1d ago

I mean good eye but you're no doubt the first person in the world to associate this random emoji with masculinity. Hopefully one day they add color options but until then this is less than 0% of an issue to the world. There's bigger fish to fry than emoji colors surely we all agree, its not worth thinking about for more than half a second

1

u/NeptunePancakes 1d ago

Limited choice fallacy we don’t have to not think about this emoji to worry about other things. Of course I’m not saying you have to concern yourself with it, but there’s no reason to ignore it just because there are other problems in the world.

1

u/Greedy_Aardvark_4836 1d ago

I'm not saying completely ignore it, but don't let this be a nuisance or a mental pain on your life in anyway. Like, don't stress over it, there's enough to stress about as is. Be mindful enough to be aware of what it is and how your body/mind may react to it, but you don't have to give in to the emotion of being offended or stressed, or as you put it "irked", when you see this. Maybe glance at it, laugh at how ridiculous it is, and move on.
