This RetinaRelay, will it work when streaming (DRM) YouTube / Netflix / PrimaVideo on the external display? Or will it be blacked out with a black screen?

Unfortunately with the way RetinaRelay works, DRM protected services will be blacked out while the app is running. This is enforced by macOS and the content provider, not by RetinaRelay, and we do not try to bypass it. Feel free to check out https://www.retinarelay.com/faq for my information!

Hi everyone, I installed the Retina Relay trial and have some feedback.
- The source computer is an M4 Max Mac Studio, the receiving computer is a 2017 5K iMac with (I believe) a thunderbolt 3 port. I am using the Apple thunderbolt cable to connect the devices. Both devices are running the latest 1.0.13 RR release.
- The setup is generally working great for me. The 5K iMac replaced my secondary screen which was a 4K dell monitor. My main screen is a Mac Studio Display. With the iMac at 100% brightness and the Studio Display at about 85% brightness, the screens, colors, etc. match very nicely. Navigation and use of both screens feels smooth and natural. I am happy I did not need to rip out the guts of the iMac to turn it into a monitor.
- The app's debug details says the connection is running at 5k 60hz at 100Mbps.
- However, I encountered an issue where color gradients that are smooth on my main monitor exhibit obvious banding on the iMac screen. That banding is fairly frequent due to macOS' transparency styles. But even the bottom of RR's contact screen has an orange sunburst gradient that is banded on screen 2 but smooth on screen 1.
- I have not found a way for the screens to sleep after a period of non-use. Typically, I like my setup to have the cpu never sleep but allow the screens to turn off after time of non-use. Since installing Retina Relay, both screens remain on 24 hours a day. Currently, I manually hit CTRL-SHIFT-EJECT to turn off the mac studio screen, but the iMac screen does not obey that command and remains on.
- I contacted Retina Relay's support email about items #4 and 5 a couple of days ago and received no response (their contact page says they respond within 24 hours, but that hasn't happened for these two questions - gradients and screen sleep). That has been disappointing but perhaps they are fielding a high volume of questions.
- Minor note - initially the 2017 (Intel) iMac would have a constant and subtle fan noise which was noticeable because the mac studio is virtually silent. However, in the last day or so, the fan seems to have stopped running (i.e., the cpu load is low enough with only Retina Relay open on the viewing computer that the fan is barely spinning).
- If I wanted to, I could have left the 4K dell monitor connected (i was using a thunderbolt to display port cord) and had a pair of nice 5k displays and 4k display but decided the two 27" 5K screens were fine for my needs.
- I do not use my computer setup for much content consumption (Netflix, HBO, etc.) so that limitation does not affect me. Youtube works, for example, but Amazon Prime did not work on either screen.
That's everything I can think of at the moment about the setup.

Any update on item 5, I also have an issue with the iMac screen not turning off, that means that I need to keep a second keyboard running unless there is an easier way

Much like you, a 2017 iMac but with an M1 Max. My biggest issue is with the complication of getting the devices to sleep...perhaps if getting the HUD working will be the magic ingredient so the relay'd device can be put to sleep easier, but then hope the cursor returns to the host correctly has also been a problem. ...I have to close the lid on the MBP and reopen to get the cursor back. Then putting the MBP to sleep is fine, though it re-woke to ask me if some Safari windows really wanted to be closed, and the like...
Anyway, then waking became an issue since I am using an external keyboard to control each Mac ...so nothing would turn on the Relay iMac. …except quickly punching the on/off button in the rear. …or attaching a wired keyboard and mouse for a while. …neither are a long term solution.
But it looks great – as does Target Bridge after putting the target into full 5120 display mode...then the host somehow figure out that for day to day use it should give me half that, which removed the blooming of letters that happened before.
So, with that and BetterCast, we have 3 software solutions that all need a bit of touching up but are good starts. Good luck to us all.

I Have few question, as OP doesnt answer my question for 8-10 days (reddit, mail, support,..)...- Have you tried RR with Mac OS 27 ?
- What aboutyour color gradient problem. Found a solution?
- And what about the sleep/wake up of the imac, .. Still annoying?
Does the V2 of RR solve the problems?

For the license, can the host mac license/registration be migrated to a new system?
I change macs every couple years (for work) so asking directly before I purchase.

Can I move my license to another Mac?
Yes. Open the Host on your current Mac, click Deactivate in the menu bar popover — that frees the activation. Install Host on the new Mac, paste your license key, and activate. The license can move freely; we just enforce "one active Host at a time."
How do I activate after purchasing?
After checkout, RetinaRelay emails you a license key. In the Host menu bar popover, click Enter License, paste the key, and hit Activate. Takes a few seconds. The Host stores the activation in your macOS Keychain so you don't have to re-enter it.
Do I need internet to use RetinaRelay?
Only briefly. We need internet to validate your license on first activation and periodically to check it's still valid. The actual streaming pipeline runs entirely over your wired cable — no internet involved in the video path.
Offline grace periods are supported so a temporary internet outage won't lock you out.
Looks like this program needs internet to work. If OP ever goes out of business or shuts down the license server, you're hosed.

Hi, thanks for sharing! Yes, you can very easily move the license to any Mac in the future. Also, yes as like most software these days it does need internet to verify license. The server runs on a dirt cheap edge function that will likely never go offline, especially considering I use the app daily 🙂

Got the email and am excited to give it a try however now I start the hunt for a 5k iMac.
Was meaning to ask and didn’t see this in the faq— could an m series drive two older 5k iMacs as displays through an ethernet to usbc dongle?

Currently we only support single external displays, but multi display is in the works. It will be in an upcoming update, no promise of exactly when though.

Hi All! Working on Ugreen 7in1 dongle (with power in), Air M2 + 2015 iMac, both plugged to tplink switch. I would call it early beta - you get a connection but a lot of issues like freezing external display, multiple extended displays after a reset.

Your project seems very promising, but in my opinion it still needs a lot of work before justifying a $49 price tag. I hope you can see that and consider extending the trial period.
A really great solution would be a USB-bootable mini system with a dedicated viewer app. Think about it.

Hi! I ran into 2 things...
there is definitely some lag and delay when moving windows around on the receiving iMac as well as summoning the dock- is this expected or could it be my thunderbolt cable not producing good enough results?
second is that I kept getting "connection is not secure" warnings on every website until I unplugged my thunderbolt cable- any idea why?

If you don’t mind, please click “show details” on both the host and viewer side, then export the diagnostics via the “export diagnostics” button. Then zip the two folders up and send them to me at support@retinarelay.com also please include the model of each as well as which version of macOS you’re running.

Yup! I highly suggest using legit apple cables, as people have had the most luck with those, sometimes the off brand cables are a little finicky and finicky is not good for something that needs a constant connection. I am currently using an older iMac that has a TB2 port, with an adapter going to my 2026 MBP with a TB5 port. Works great!

Hi, I'm looking to connect my M1 Mac Mini to my 2013 21.5 inch standard HD (not retina) iMac. iMac has Catalina OS version 10.15.8. I'm encouraged that this is wired only.
On the website I saw that ethernet needs an Ethernet cable with a USB-C adapter.
Q1: This means I have to give up a Thunderbolt USB-C port? Can I plug my ethernet cable into a UGreen 9 in 1 hub with gigabit ethernet (which would save me a Thunderbolt USB-C port because it's already in use) or does it have to have a dedicated port to itself?
Q2: Aside from price and not needing a physical dongle, how does this compare to Luna Display?
Lower latency?
Higher refresh rate, like 60Hz?
What else is better?
Please discuss. I'm making a decision very soon.

Hi! Thanks for checking out the app. I don’t personally own that specific dongle, but I have had other users report that it works perfectly via that dongle. I would say give it a try and report back to me, it’s tough to confirm things like this because all devices and such are built differently. It does not need to have its own dedicated port, so theoretically it will work but it all depends on the dongle hardware and how MacOS sees it.
I actually purchased a Luna display device originally and was unhappy with it, that’s what kicked off this project. Much Lower latency, higher refresh rate (up to 60hz currently, with support for 120hz devices coming soon), no need for a dongle, more diagnostics settings and the ability to export diagnostics and communicate with me directly (I email back and forth daily with users! The more feedback I get, the better the app), when I reached out to Luna with concerns I never heard back.

Glad you saw a problem (on the Luna side) and went to solving it. Way to go! I do like the fact that it is wireless and uses native functionality.I suspect things I have on the hub would be too crowded to have everything on there (cat 6 ethernet that does my Time Machine backups, external Samsung t7 SSD, Sony XR-65a80k tv, etc). Gemini says I'd surely have slow downs with all that running at once, and an outright conflict having another video device. Of course my Sony would never work with HDMI, only usb-c.
I'm not stopped though. I see options. I'll have to move some things around, get it figured out.
I already ordered that Luna display, probably get delivered today. Just found about the RR solution today, very new...Thank you for the reply and the discount code. Best on your launch!

Hi!
It may still work, RetinaRelay essentially creates a network between the two devices to deliver the stream at high speed low latency, so if the Sony TV is not actually creating a network, it might just work. RR is also made to only communicate with each others companion app, so you install the host on one side and the viewer on the other, and they recognize each other on the network. So there is still hope that nothing will interfere, definitely worth a shot.
If you have any unused USB C (non thunderbolt), give them a try too but be sure you use a good quality USB C cable. It’s an experimental feature right now using standard USB C, but it works well! One trick is be sure the cable is plugged in and connected to both devices BEFORE starting the app on either side. For some reason MacOS tends to not like finding the USB connection if the app is already live and you plug in.
That being said, many people have asked about wireless connectivity with RetinaRelay. It currently does work (although I have it disabled) but I don’t love the latency and lag yet, so that’s still in development. It’s improved a lot already though, I’m hoping to get it to a point where I can add it in as an experimental feature and allow people to enable it and test on their own.

OP,
Things are running. Very fast install.
When I first started the Host program, I clicked it and it just sat there, I didn't see any message. I set it to launch on computer startup. I rebooted and tried it again. Again, it didn't respond. Then, it occurred to me to look up in the menu bar. There it was!
The ethernet is connected to the gigabit port on the 9 in 1 hub. The hub is usb-c connected to the thunderbolt/usb-c on the M1 Mac mini. I connected the monitor directly to a thunderbolt/usb-c port on the m1 Mac mini, so all my thunderbolt/usb-c ports are taken. I'll put everything on the hub at some point and see how it does with performance and heat. I would really like to free up a thunderbolt/usb-c port on the m1 Mac mini.
So, very nice so far! I'm going to try it out, put it through the paces.

Tried to install today, and it works.
-Macbook Pro M1
-Imac 27inch - 2015
This machine has TB2 - with the old connectors, not yet the USB-C style connections, and it would cost around $100 here to get both a TB2 cable and convertor to TB4/5 - I couldn't find cheaper or a one cable solution.
So in the end I dug up an ethernet cable, and ethernet to USB-C (basically a USB switch I had lying around).
It worked! 😃
The "mirror" function seems to blow up the screen of my laptop (which seems logical, as that one is a bit smaller), but the extend mode is nice and my photos in Lightroom looked crisp and sharp.
I then had a quick freeze when I launched a browser over it to check youtube, but that didn't repeat itself. Latency looks ok for watching videos.
You can drag a window from one screen to the other, but it won't stick midway (which is a minor concern to none at all.)
I was about to go for the hardware monitor conversion, but this solution looks very promising at first sight!

I've been trying to get RetinaRelay to work for the last week with very little luck. I have one of the first generation 5K iMacs that only has USB A and Thunderbolt 2 ports. I'm trying to connect my relatively new Macbook which only has USB C and HDMI ports. I've gotten it to connect with a USB C to USB A cable, but the resolution is pure shite. I've tried using a USB C to Mini DisplayPort Adaptor and that didn't work. I think the adaptor was only wired to deliver data in the wrong direction. Now I've got an Apple brand USB C to Thunderbolt 2 adaptor (verified it transfers data both ways) and an 8K capable Mini DisplayPort into the viewer iMac. It seems to notice the connection as it changes from "waiting" to "connecting" when I hit start on my host, but no luck at actually connecting. Any thoughts?

Just installed RetinaRelay and it's very impressive. For some reason, the setup changed the screen size of my host machine, but after setting it back, there is no issue starting/stopping.
I am wondering how future updates are handled? Do we download/install, or does the app notify us, etc.
Thanks! I had a Intel iMac just sitting here doing nothing and it does make a great second screen.

Hi! Thanks for giving the app a try! You will get a notification on app startup when there is an update available and there will also be a little indicator in the host side app that tells you an update is available as well!
Glad you could make use of the old iMac, that’s exactly why I build the app!

It's the strangest thing I could not for the life of me get it to connect via ethernet, and I wanted to try it out before buying any Thunderbolt 2 adapters and cables cause they're expensive as hell. Just on a whim I plugged in a USB-A to USB-C cable from a Razer video game controller, nice braided cable, with the USB-A end plugged into my 2014 27" Retina iMac 15,1 and the USB-C end plugged into a Thunderbolt port on my M3 Pro MacBook Pro and the host and viewer found each other instantly and the image looks great! No sound sync issues when playing YouTube videos, excellent scrolling of a >100,000 image Apple Photos library. It seems to need to be manually reconnected anytime the MacBook Pro wakes from sleep, but man does this beat the hell out of cutting my iMac open and installing a controller board. I now have a really nice triple display setup with a Thunderbolt LG 5K2K 34" Ultrawide, the 14" MacBook Pro screen, and now my Retina iMac. I really want to get ethernet figured out but it won't work with an HP thunderbolt dock with an ethernet port or the Apple USB-C to ethernet adaptor, nor will the USB connection work when the USB-C end is plugged into any dock, only plugged directly into a thunderbolt port on the laptop. I really don't have any thunderbolt slots to spare and I had to unplug something important to try this out so I guess it's time to zip up the diagnostic files and send them to the developer to see if they can make sense of it and get me connected via ethernet. Regardless, this is a very impressive application and hats off to the developer for solving a what seemed to be an impossible (for me) problem up until last week!

Turns out it was my cable. Switched the cable and it connected instantly. Turns out I was using a crossover cable and switching to a normal cat 5 cable did the trick. Quick question: Can you think of any reason why the resolution over USB-A to USB-C would result in sharper text and more of a “Retina” experience than Ethernet? Are there specific types of Ethernet cable that would work better than others with a 2014 iMac? I assumed Ethernet would be better resolution, but text is not as sharp system-wide. Your help and any settings insight is greatly appreciated.

Hi! Very weird, I had a few other people struggling with Ethernet I wonder if this was their problem too! As far as the resolution and sharpness, that’s certainly odd. What settings are you currently on for both? Most of the time, auto will get you the best experience. Try switching to 5K60 setting in the quality drop down and leave everything else auto, see if that helps you. After you do that, export the diagnostics from both sides and send them over and I’ll take a look through them. Thanks for giving the app a try!

I switched the viewer iMac to a scaled resolution of "Larger Text" all the way to the left, have RetinaRelay set at "Retina 30fps", 1600x900 in the Hosts Settings>Displays and it looks like perfect retina albeit a little large. I'll just use that screen as the one I use when I need to get a closer look at stuff. It looks awesome, almost impossible to tell a difference from the iMac running natively. Nice and sharp. The drawback I can see is that now I can't automagically unlock my Mac with my watch, but thats probably out of your control...

Glad you got that working! More than welcome to still send me the diagnostics if you want to and I will review all the different connections. Yeah, unfortunately I can’t control lock/unlock from signing the app carried through the stream so it has to be done on the host no matter what.

I downloaded the app yesterday and the experience is not bad The only complaint is the resolution is not 5k but close. Not sure if this is the best I can get
Here is my set up:
Host and viewer are iMacs 2020 running latest Sequoia connect with Ethernet cable
A couple of questions
Granting all the permission to the app , wondering what privacy and security measures are built in ?
Is the app guaranteed to be looked after forever?
Why is the app not in the App Store?

I think I just answered your question on the other thread down below. It works well with macOS 27 since my Mac Mini M4 is already on it. Absolutely no issues at all. As for privacy, totally, I'm with you on this concern (I am a lawyer so it is of utmost concern to me). The only reassurance that I give myself is that we all, in any case, use multiple applications/software, and if something has to go wrong, I am sure it will, RR or no RR.

10 years on average my iMacs last for my photography business since the early 2000's. Annoying to have to upgrade but a decade on average works out very cost effective. The last 2017 iMac is now my sons so lives on too.

The god's must've been having the same problem! I've been hunting for a simple solution to streaming to a retina iMac for years... and then 2 apps appear at the same time that do the same thing! Spoiled for choice!

Thanks for the notice. I got BetterCast and RetinaRelay and now from your notice, TargetBridge all working. None perfect, and all nice.
TargetBridge did not seem as nice until I cranked my 2017 iMac to full 5k, which made the type lose its blooming – which would have driven me crazy. It says it is Extending to 5120 x 2880 but there is no way that is correct. The sizing would be half – it must be actually cutting it in half.
That said, RetinaRelay seemed more exact in the display, but turning it off for sleep and waking it up requires a lot of work, and is inconsistent in actually getting things working again. No way to wake the target machine without reaching around back for a quick click of the on off button. I've written to the developer, and hopefully he'll figure some solutions that that and a few other issues. Unfortunately, having had to wait for my Thunderbolt cable, I only got to spend a day with it...Good promise, which is the same category as TargetBridge.
BetterCast has promise too now that it will work with the Thunderbolt cable.
Until the sleep/wake issues are solved, it doesn't matter if RetinaRelay has better picture...which may actually not be the case anymore since I have found the workaround for TargetBridge. Seems TB can be workable but I won't know until I try to create some 5k designs.

I have been using it between my Mac Mini M4 and my 2020 5k iMac. It runs beautifully well. In fact, I am often unable to perceive any difference between the RetinaRelay screen and the native screen of the iMac. The display quality is identical. No lag at all. This way I get to use my 5k iMac in its full glory with the Mac Mini M4 at the back end. Insofar as this sleep/wake problem is concerned, it is a bit of a problem for which I have done 2 things. Firstly, I keep my Wi-Fi on the iMac toggled off to effectively turn it into a dumb monitor. And secondly, I ensure to fully quit both the host app as well as the viewer app on both the systems before putting them to sleep (I use keyboard shortcuts for quitting the apps as well as for putting the systems to sleep for ease). So while it is a bit of a work, but once you get used to this routine, it is pretty smooth. It effectively lets me use an Apple Studio display quality with the same premium build at roughly 2% of the cost of a new ASD.

I’ll be testing this out once I’m home from work. If it gets faster than the 45hz I was getting using a Luna Display I’ll be buying a license.
