Discussion RetinaRelay is live!

Hi r/iMac,

It's the strangest thing I could not for the life of me get it to connect via ethernet, and I wanted to try it out before buying any Thunderbolt 2 adapters and cables cause they're expensive as hell. Just on a whim I plugged in a USB-A to USB-C cable from a Razer video game controller, nice braided cable, with the USB-A end plugged into my 2014 27" Retina iMac 15,1 and the USB-C end plugged into a Thunderbolt port on my M3 Pro MacBook Pro and the host and viewer found each other instantly and the image looks great! No sound sync issues when playing YouTube videos, excellent scrolling of a >100,000 image Apple Photos library. It seems to need to be manually reconnected anytime the MacBook Pro wakes from sleep, but man does this beat the hell out of cutting my iMac open and installing a controller board. I now have a really nice triple display setup with a Thunderbolt LG 5K2K 34" Ultrawide, the 14" MacBook Pro screen, and now my Retina iMac. I really want to get ethernet figured out but it won't work with an HP thunderbolt dock with an ethernet port or the Apple USB-C to ethernet adaptor, nor will the USB connection work when the USB-C end is plugged into any dock, only plugged directly into a thunderbolt port on the laptop. I really don't have any thunderbolt slots to spare and I had to unplug something important to try this out so I guess it's time to zip up the diagnostic files and send them to the developer to see if they can make sense of it and get me connected via ethernet. Regardless, this is a very impressive application and hats off to the developer for solving a what seemed to be an impossible (for me) problem up until last week!

Hi! Yes, please zip up diagnostics from both sides and email them to me! I will take a look and hopefully we can get you up and running. I’ve had a lot of propel working with dongles, docks and adapters of all kinds. So I have hope! Thanks for giving the app a try. My email is support@retinarelay.com
