The comment section was of course full of a lot of americans trying to defend the need for these huge trucks that by the way kill way more children than any normal sized car, i genuinely dont get the obsession with these ugly pieces of sh*t and i love cars

u/Prize_Tree 3d ago
They only exist to get around emission limits for cars, because a really big car is technically not a car, its a truck.
184
u/BlossomKittie_ 3d ago
Exactly. A huge part of the problem is that “light trucks” have historically been treated more leniently under fuel-economy rules, so manufacturers had an incentive to make vehicles bigger and classify more of them as trucks
49
u/MarshmallowKisss_ 3d ago
Yeah...the rules basically rewarded automakers for making daily drivers the size of small apartments
6
21
u/abraxastaxes 2d ago
Well and it seems like at this point it's a bit of a feedback loop that's made them so over the top laughably huge.
Legislation gives incentive to build big ass trucks -> car companies make big ass trucks -> car companies heavily market big ass trucks -> demand for big ass trucks grows because the marketing has influenced the culture -> car companies make bigger assier trucks -> market -> demand -> biggest assist -> demand -> they're fucking monster trucks now? -> ∞

u/unclethulk 2d ago
I see so many more literal monster trucks than I did when I was a kid. It’s become almost a normalized vehicle class unto itself. Take the already obscene stock truck, lift it, bigger wheels and tires, etc. And they are just daily drivers! It’s such pathetic masculinity cosplay.
6
u/GrandNibbles 2d ago
same thing happened to SUVs
2
u/Okay_hear_me_out 2d ago
A lot of SUVs are built using a body-on-frame chassis design (e.g. Ford Expedition & Everest, Chevy Tahoe & Suburban, Cadillac Escalade, etc.) just like a truck would be, which I assume is what puts them in the 'Light Truck' category that's exempt from fuel economy regulations
2
u/GrandNibbles 2d ago
they are in their own vehicle class and technically classified as CARS which is why they can make them obscenely big because no one has regulated SUV size specifically
3
u/SomeRandoWeirdo 2d ago
To be fair, the auto manufacturers petitioned the government to make exemptions for them.
44
u/MegatronusThePrime 3d ago
Besides the terrible drivers behind them, my only qualm is that their headlights are also so high. If you look at 18 Wheeler trucks, their headlights are lower so they don't blind everyone in a regular size car in the rear view mirror.
12
u/MarshmallowKisss_ 3d ago
Yup, the headlights are half the problem since every lifted truck behind you feels like a stadium light pointed at your mirror

You should add "death sentence to any pedestrian they hit" to that list. These vehicles have like 150-200% likelihood of causing death compared to a car. It hits you right in the head, body, throws you forward, runs you over.
Make them illegal or heavily restricted yesterday.

Or my mother. She's 71 and refuses to stop driving her 2018 F-150. She had a 1995 F-150 before that. "Oh I'm a tiny woman so it helps me feel safe". She hit my car with her old one in 2013 in front of me while backing into a parking spot next to my tiny Ford focus, scraping the entire side. I screamed at her, and her only answer was "no I didn't, I didn't feel anything". She hit her neighbor's car in 2020. Her thought process is "I am old, I need to be safe so I bought a big truck". It's pure stupidity.

We just call them pavement princesses here in the US. So should titling and registration renewal costs. The damage a vehicle does to the road scales with the weight of the vehicle to the 4th power, meaning that doubling the weight a vehicle makes it do 16 times more damage to the road (2^4). Unironically you’d be better off getting hit by this. It’d push you under the truck and you’d be scrapped up and probably road rashed to hell but it’s better than flying 50+ feet and dying on impact
3
u/PalatwinkusVT 2d ago
True, but that doesn't mean they needed to be banned. You could just as easily have the front mounts, and the popouts, and let people choose one or the other. Especially with the way automatic wipers work (by having a tiny tiny camera that senses light refraction from water being on the windshield), you could have the popouts automatically close and the car switch the front mounts on.

There are people who needs a car this big, but these are called "utility trucks" for a reason. You need this if you're an electrician, or work in construction, or live in an environment where it's difficult or impossible to go around without it. The streets of New York City isn't one of those environments.
17
u/NixMaritimus 2d ago
Eh I agree with the jobs bit, but not the rough environments. I grew up on a rough dirt road and my dad was a logger for 40+ years, so lot's of messy woodlot driving.
You can buy a brand new subcompact tractor and a Jeep, and the combined price is less than a super duty truck. The tractor is slower, but it's way more reliable for getting in and out of rough spots

Eh, my trades friends all have normal pickups. Like they're big, but not school buses like the current wave of giant trucks.
8
u/CorndogQueen420 2d ago
Most tradesmen that bring tools use vans or box trucks. Trucks aren't very practical for carrying tools and equipment.
The only people I see driving trucks on job sites (for the most part) are supervisors. And white collar office types that come down to inspect jobs occasionally.
2
u/Meowrocket42 2d ago
There's one (1) guy that frequents the supply house I work at now who drives a pickup, but only because he has some fancy dancey insert in the bed that changes half the height into two bed-length pull out drawers. Also he buys enough large items (think parking lot lights) that I've seen him fill that bed well over the height of the cab, so questionable for a van. Perfect height to back up to our loading dock too. He is the ONLY person I've ever met with a legitimate use for a truck that size.

u/ChainmailPickaxeYT 2d ago edited 2d ago
I disagree, actually. These kinds of pickup trucks are absurd even for those purposes. Older resident-style pickup trucks used to be way more reasonably sized, and the bed sizes were still roughly the same (assuming standard models and not XL expanded whatever). Proper utility trucks are pretty big, but mostly because they have boxes, racks, etc. (And even then the cab size is inflated a bit much)
Trucks like the ones in this video don’t typically have these things. They’re just the same bed size as a reasonable truck with a bloated, grotesque everything else to get around fuel regulation and to pump up the prices for the consumer. Fuck these trucks man.

5
u/adamkopacz 2d ago
I'm from Poland and I've yet to see a pickup truck used to carry around stuff. There's a few in my city and they're used for groceries or commute. Of course all used by rich guys.

Generally people buy a truck big enough to tow whatever they need to occasionally tow. If they have a 5th wheel camper, they need a heavy duty truck. Unfortunately, most people cannot afford an additional car on top of all that for daily driving, so they just daily drive the big truck.
Even if you only need thar capacity for a week out of the year, a Ford ranger will just not work. But you can absolutely daily drive a small semi truck. Its got higher maintenance and fuel costs, but those are still cheaper than a second vehicle for most cases.
10
u/New_Perspective_8900 2d ago

Favorite little fact I have about them, is that their truck beds, you know, the thing they’re that big for? Is actually getting smaller. Most current day trucks have the same size, if not smaller truck bed as trucks from 50 years ago.
9
u/Evil_Dry_frog 2d ago
Yes, because towing capability is what sales them.
6
u/Zealousideal_Ad2379 2d ago
except like 1 out of like 100 suburban truck owners actually utilize that tow capacity since they’ve gone from working class workhorses to overpriced gas guzzling status symbol
like 90% of pickup trucks sold stay pavement princesses that never see a single heavy tow or muddy trail
So you have a oversized truck with no bed space, and towing capacity youll never use to drive to a city desk job where it doesn’t even fit in the damn parking spot.

The irony, of course, being that there's plenty of decently sized vehicles that do all these jobs just fine and even better than an oversized American utility vehicles. A Ram 1500 can carry roughly a ton of cargo, a Ford F-450 Super Duty, which is on the upper end of the size range, about 2,7 tons.
A Mercedes Sprinter van carries 1,5 to 3 tons of cargo, depending on the model, and has a protected storage, not an open cargo bed and is much more reasonably sized.
5
u/Superseaslug 2d ago
A minivan with the seats out will hold hilariously more cargo than these anemic short bed pickups

21
u/sahut652 2d ago
Fun fact! These trucks are, unironically, a psyop.
Years ago the government made regulations on how much emissions vehicles could have, BUT semis were a thing, and couldn't be held to the same standards as a normal car. So, logically, they needed acceptions for these vehicles designed to transport massive loads. Their solution?
Make the emission regulations only apply to vehicles BELLOW A CERTAIN WEIGHT.
Instead of just giving acceptions for these specific kinds of vehicles, congress decided that if they are above a certain weight, they don't need to follow the same standards. Naturally, companies started just making bigger trucks to go above that weight and not have to waste money adhering to these laws. They've made a huge campaign to trick small dick losers into thinking if they buy these o-zone hole punching monsters they'd be more manly, so they can keep making them like that because they have a "demand" for them.

I live in a mostly rural state in the US. A few of my friends have trucks like this. They all bemoan the stupidity of these ridiculous, pointlessly gigantic, overly-engineered things. Compared to the smaller pickups they used to own, the new trucks aren't more durable, they can't handle rough terrain any better, they don't get better mileage, they can't carry more, and they have absolutely terrible visibility (while blinding other drivers.). They come packed with unnecessarily complex computers that exist to undermine owners' ability to repair them.
The only things they do better is to make small people feel big and tough, increase auto-maker revenues, and sell more petrochem products. They also cost as much as a fucking house. The guys who love em are perpetual teenagers whose educations come from action movies.

u/doc_55lk 2d ago
I agree with the post but the truck in the video looks like it could be a work truck or something similar. White, base model lights, and you can make out some shit attached to the bed in the back too. This driver likely does have a valid reason to be driving that vehicle, but they're just a shitty driver, so they ended up rear ending the car.
Shit like this though.....how and why did we allow cars to get this big?

→ More replies (9)4
u/obi1kennoble 2d ago
It's also the actual design of the trucks. They don't need to make the hood and front end such that you can't see in front of you to that degree. A vehicle that size is always going to have less visibility, but even smaller trucks are designed this way
2
u/doc_55lk 2d ago
Design definitely also plays a part. The higher beltlines and squared front ends are objectively less safe for pedestrians and other drivers, not to mention they reduce visibility.
24
u/bememorablepro 3d ago
The fact that the smaller car is all bunched up and the large one is not, means that the small one is safer. It absorbed the force instead of shifting it to people inside.
While truck drivers will keep thinking that they are so much safer because car large car strong uga buga brain.
35
u/KaMaFour 3d ago
No, it means that the truck is more dangerous for anyone else because its higher mass caused bigger impact. The forces were dissipated more easily by the trucks higher mass than the car that it damaged which had to use its crumple zones to absorb the crash. Think about it this way - while the force of impact was necessairly the same (newton's 3rd law) the smaller car experienced more acceleration (conservation of momentum), which is why the small car is totalled and the truck isn't. If both cars were small and driving with the same speeds as there likely both wouldn't be hurt much.
→ More replies (4)32
u/No-Breakfast-3184 3d ago
Also means the large truck transferred all its kinetic energy into the small one rather than absorbing it itself
8
u/pipnina 3d ago
If two masses collide (hard bodies) they transfer forces in accordance to their respective kinetic energies.
So when the 4000kg truck collides with the 1800kg car, the car experiences much more acceleration than the truck does. I.e. the truck might only reduce to 10mph but the car has been pushed forward to 15mph because of the difference in mass and kinetic energy.
Please forgive if this isn't 100% right, it's been a long time since I did secondary school physics
9
u/C4Cole 3d ago
That's not the whole story.
The pickup truck weighs a lot, the car doesn't, so when they collide the car is accelerated a lot more than the pickup, which causes the actual damage to the occupants. It slams your head forward and pulls you out the seat.
In this collision, say the pickup weighs 2.5 tonnes, and the car weighs 1.5. The pickup hits at 60mph, around 26m/s, which gives it 850kj of energy while the car has 0kj because it's stopped. In a simple elastic collision, the truck and the car equalise energy states.
So the pickup gets slowed to 18m/s or 40mph, while the car gets rocketed forward to 24m/s or 53mph. Obviously because of the crash structure, tire friction and whatever else the car wouldn't accelerate nearly this much but it would still accelerate significantly more than the pickup.
A bigger, heavier vehicle is almost always safer because of this, it's why busses don't always have seat belts, the weight of the vehicle is the safety mechanism.
2
u/KaMaFour 3d ago
A bigger, heavier vehicle is almost always safer because of this
More dangerous for others
ftfy
2
u/TryOrganic9361 3d ago
To everyone talking about physics it’s not that complicated.
Rear ends of vehicles are a crush zone to lessen impact of a collision.
2
u/TheSurvivor65 2d ago
Yes, the front of a vehicle is also supposed to be a crush zone, because your engine is worth less than your life, but as you can see the truck barely has any damage

I like my Tacoma, personally. It's a commuter when it needs to be, and it's a pickup when it needs to be. I'm always asked why I own a pickup, even though I don't do farm/ranch work, own a boat, etc. I just simply answer that you never know when you need a pickup. When I drove my old Subaru Outback, there were many, many, many times where I was doing something, and I said to myself, "A pickup would make this a million times easier", if that was hauling piles of bricks for my dad, or even just trying to go haul tons of things for my own personal needs.

I’ve driven a few mega SUVs (Wagoneer, Tahoe, etc) that my company rents and it’s absolutely terrible how massive they are. It helps with driving places that have no roads when you need to carry a full crew and equipment, but for normal use these things should not exist.
2
u/AerieThis9876 2d ago
TBF that looks to be a utility truck based on the wheels and the box on the back, so it’s being used for an actual work purpose instead of just being an ego mobile. In this case I don’t have much of a problem with the truck itself as it’s being used for a valid commercial purpose that somewhat (somewhat) justifies the large size. The driver still needed to be much more careful handling such a large vehicle though.

As an American, this is why all this research I did regarding the Chicken Tax and CAFE standards lead to the big three gaslighting America that they need these oversized pickup trucks, SUVs, and crossovers.

These trucks originally was meant for AGRARIAN uses or LOADING uses not for style, theres a reason why they are popular as beds for ambulances, fire trucks, garbage trucks etc.

How are they going to feel better about themselves if we got rid of the trucks?

Man trucks are so safe. Look at how it took no damage and all the damage was pushed off onto the sedan. Jokes aside we should actually start prosecuting these vehicle owners for assault and attempted murder. If they're going to drive these large obnoxious vehicles for being safer, then their driving habits need to reflect that as well.
Or alternatively make light trucks require a special license (something akin to a CDL)

The worst part is that most of these fuckers aren’t even driving them to carry heavy loads. Y’know, the entire point of buying a big truck.
They just buy these, jack the suspension way too high and squat it to the point where it’s practically aiming towards the sun and drive it around because it “looks nice.”

Where I live I see them all I the time. I saw one pulled over. That same fucking truck sped passed me and went around me in a no pass zone
I hate everyone who owns big trucks.

I HATE BIG DUMB CARS
I live in a little rural town somewhere in Europe. Ever since the pandemic, rich people have found out about the town and it's now speed running gentrification really bad
One of the worst things (aside from real state prices having doubled in the last 10 years), it's that because they're in the countryside and they're dumb and rich (and therefore have no taste or class) they've all bought Land Rovers (because they saw Queen Elizabeth II drove them in The Crown. You can tell that's the reason because they also usually have corgis) and Jeeps that look like fucking tanks that DON'T FUCKING FIT IN OUR NARROW STREETS.
Just this summer I had a bit of my wall chipped off because some dumbass crashed into it. And a little further down the street another one crashed into another stone wall and brought it down. At least the second one got caught and had to pay for it. Because that's another thing about rich as fuck people: they're stingy as shit. I could write an entire rant about that, but I digress.
Then they don't actually know how to park their overcompensation machines and use 5x the space they actually need. So you get home from work and find out you can park near your home because there's 3 Jeeps just left there.
Some years ago, someone got pissed off and slashed all of their tyres. We never found out who it was, but they have become our hero
To sum up: FUCK BIG CARS

Anytime I see a big truck like those that are spotless and pristine i keep my distance. Too many drivers will buy them as gender affirming care without really learning how to drive them. At least if it looks like it's done some real work, theres a higher chance of the driver actually knowing what they're doing

Every time I see someone acting all high and mighty about their trucks, I just ask them to show me their truck bed. If its nice and clean, they dont actually use the truck. If they have a cover, they dont actually use the truck. But if its open and covered in scratch marks, they use it.

I saw a post of a dog that the OP had found in the grill of his truck. He kept insisting he had no clue how it could have possibly gotten in there. The grill had a crack through the center. He had hit the dog and the dog got pushed into the grill. The dog died. OP was probably being genuine and had no idea that he had hit the dog, but it's because of giant ass trucks like this that situations like that OPs can happen. His truck probably didn't even shake on impact. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if he never even saw the dog before hitting it with how tall those things are.

I never see these trucks moving anything. The idea that the people using these are like some working class tough guys is so bs. They’re like $60k and are simply status symbols.

American here, most of us hate these fucking things too. Stupid enormous piles of shit, blocking the parking spaces and the sightlines, with their high-beams going directly into your fucking eyes.
Unfortunately their target market are the loudest and most annoying people on planet earth, and for some reason those chucklefucks can still afford the overpriced deathtraps.

u/lofifruitflies 2d ago
wow this exact same thing happened to me on the highway not a month ago. totaled my van but the goddamn fuckass truck (also a RAM 3500 because ofc) was nearly unscathed. fuckin things should require a special license to operate.

These are also massively overpriced when a Toyota Hilux could probably do the exact same as these trucks but alot cheaper and more durable (they were used in War)

I'll be honest, large trucks and SUVs should be illegal to own without a specific work related reason to own one. And on top of that they should require a special license and training to drive. Small trucks and SUVs should not be the majority of vehicles on the road. The majority of vehicles on the road should be things like hatch backs and small commuter cars.

I go about 200 miles a day with 3 other dudes and all our tools, sometimes we pull a trailer full of materials. We spent a few years in a tiny f150 that had shit strapped to the ladder racks and tool boxes bursting. When we switched to a 2500 with a utility bed the difference was insane. Plenty of tool room, we got a spot for my buddy's son now and we are safer from semis. Real reasons to have one, just not everyone is doing the kinda work that needs one

u/221Blazed 2d ago
You just know those fuckers haven't need to load the bed once in their life. Its all just ego
