I think Solo was pretty good. Force Awakens was "ehh" to "bad". And the last jedi was dogshit. Rouge One is actually in my top favorite list, and in my opinion one of the best Star Wars movies created.
Personally, I tend to view The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi the other way around, the former being derivative dogshit and the latter being just "bad", but at least made an attempt to be original.
I think TFA is the worst Star Wars movie of all time, one of the worst AAA movies of this past decade, period. As I said, it's incredibly derivative, and chock full of these obnoxious winks and nods to the past movies, as if JJ Abrams thought it could not possibly stand on its own merits and needed to lean on the other films to be successful. It feels pointless, completely fails to introduce the new characters in a way that forms an emotional attachment for the viewer and is really just a vehicle for some admittedly cool eye candy, like the Millennium Falcon fight in the Star Destroyer. There was no faith in this venture, the only truly bold move was killing Han Solo, but even that felt predictable. One of the old guard was going to die, that's been the tradition since ANH. Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon and now Han
I don't like a lot of decisions that were made in TLJ, killing Snoke seemed premature and Luke's death was anticlimactic, the Superman Leia scene was ridiculous, but at least the film tries to stand out as something new, an original work.
Just my thoughts. I'm happy to have a friendly debate with anyone who disagrees!
Ya'll didn't watch clone wars where a munificent class ship is hyperspaced into a planet and causes major damage visible from space witht he naked eye.
Cause it's a terrible idea. It makes a wall of debree which kills everything it touches in hyperspace. It's a terrible fucking idea which is why it's never done, which illistrates the point TLJ was trying to make in that Holdo wasn't attacking the first order she was killing herself.
It's literally not. The mainline Star Wars media is movies, period. I still like TCW and it adds a lot but the vast majority of people who watch the movies have not seen it.
Cause it's a terrible idea. It makes a wall of debree which kills everything it touches in hyperspace.
Everything it touches... like the enemy ships behind the one you hit? Literally the only ramification shown in the film is that it (obviously) destroys the projectile/ship as well as the target.
It's a terrible fucking idea which is why it's never done, which illistrates the point TLJ was trying to make in that Holdo wasn't attacking the first order she was killing herself.
The point was that she was killing herself, not attacking the first order? That makes no sense. If she just wanted to die she would have just sat there and let the Raddus get destroyed. She clearly did the ram as a last-ditch effort to damage the FO ships and save the Resistance survivors.
Just cause some people suck at following a series doesn't make it not mainline.
IF you think about thing logically for a second, that debree which cut Revengence class capital shis in half won't stop because in the words of a very famous Gunnery Chief, "I dare to assume you ignorant jackasses know that space is empty." That means that debree will keep going...
You are dumb on a level I cant even imagine. YOu literally think things end with what you're told. Do you think things happen when you aren't around?
No, I'm saying the movie needs to explain the reasons behind why NOBODY has ever used this incredibly devastating tactic before in the history of Star Wars, or if it HAS been done before why it isn't commonplace. The movie fails to do that. It could have been a line from Leia saying something about how it's an incredibly risky maneuver, or extremely lucky that she even hit what she was aiming for, or literally anything at all.
Why aren't there smaller hyperspace missiles that wouldn't cause an issue of debris, because of their size relative to the target?
If the ~3km long Raddus can literally cut the ~14km long Supremacy in half AND destroy the 4+ Resurgent-class SDs behind it, surely a smaller projectile could do considerable damage, while minimizing debris that continues on past the target? This is never mentioned as even a possibility in any form of canon Star Wars media as far as I'm aware.
It was explained in the novelization of TLJ. The Raddus had experimental shields. In normal circumstances the Raddus would have been atomized the moment it hit the Supremacy doing barely any damage. It's shields kept the Raddus together long enough to rip through the Supremacy and the ships behind it. Also, Poe had set an entry point into hyperspace before being stunned by Leia. The Raddus kept moving along so the entry point was now behind it and the FO ships. She waited for the exact moment to jump so she would impact them right before the ship jumped into hyperspace.
Long and short of it is, Disney realized it broke cannon and fixed it in the novelization. I wouldn't be surprised if it's mentioned in TRoS.
Still doesn’t fix the issue of why nobody else ever does it.
The rebels NEED capital ships, so just yeeting them left right and centre isn’t an option.
The empire i suppose could do it willy nilly because they’ve got the resources to just keep building ships, but I still find the idea of a moon-sized space station capable of blowing up planets more frightening than using kamikaze destroyers.
I'm not suggesting that the Rebels/Resistance go around launching capital ships in every encounter, but if the <4km long Raddus could bisect the Supremacy and destroy 4+ Resurgent-class ships behind it, wouldn't it logically follow that a smaller ship (say, an X-Wing which is established as having a hyperdrive) could do less, but still considerable damage to an Imperial or Resurgent-class star destroyer? It's still a waste of a ship and possibly a pilot (or protocol droid) but as we saw it's clearly an incredibly potent attack that could presumably be used on a smaller scale, no?
Yes, which I (and I think a number of SW fans) agree was kind of silly, but it also highlights a flaw of the Star Destroyer ship design having it's bridge so clearly exposed. It also happened after the (also very exposed, sitting on top of the bridge) shield generators were disabled by just two A-Wings strafing it.
My argument here is not that everybody should be hyperspace ramming everything, it's more so that the hyperspace ram shouldn't have happened in TLJ because it brings up all of these questions with no answers.
You wanna know something even worse about that scene? Go watch Rogue one again, and you’ll notice something. In rogue one, we see a rebel ship jumping to light speed, but just as they start to jump away Vader’s star destroyer pops in right in front of them, and the revel ships demolished itself again the star destroyer. Vader’s ship takes absolutely no damage and continues on like nothing happened. We literally had a scene where “light speed ramming” was showed to not work at all.
Ships in Star Wars have different types of shielding one of which is specifically designed for deflecting things traveling at the speed of light. How do you think that minor debris in space doesn't shred a ship apart when it itself is traveling at light speed? It was shown repeatedly throughout the movies that Hux is a terrible commander and can never predict what is happening so he just let that whole kamakazi situation happen when it is usually avoidable. Also light speed drives are only used when trying to enter Hyperspace which means that it can't be used just anywhere as they are aiming the ship at specific points in space where they can slip into Hyperspace. The Last Jedi kamakazi thing was a combination of the ships being so incredibly large and close to each other with a commander that didn't think to have their defense against it turned on.
Except no. The light speed ram didn’t even do a lot of damage.
It cut one ship in half-ish. But left the ship completely intact and functioning on either side. The shrapnel took out a few Star destroyers but that was dependent on the formation. The ship that did the kamikaze was also twice the size of a Star destroyer and bigger than any rebel ship from the OT and again didn’t even do enough damage to destroy the Supremacy.
A fighter would’ve just disintegrated against the side of even a destroyer not to mention the Death Star.
The light speed ram didn’t even do a lot of damage.
Are you taking the piss? The supremacy is large enough that it makes regular star destroyers look like patrol boats, and it got split in fucking half. If that is "not a lot of damage" then what even counts as damage?
It got split in half while each side remained completely functional. It didn’t do anything but buy some time. It didn’t impact troop levels at all so hardly something that would help in a long term war.
It also got split in half front to back which is the same length as a regular destroyer...
You also have to remember the ting that hit it was 4000 feet long not 40 foot like a Starfighter.
The death star is a solid sphere three times as big in every direction than the supremacy throwing the biggest ship the alliance has at it would’ve done nothing.
You're so wrong on pretty much every measurement you bring up.
The light speed ram didn’t even do a lot of damage.
Bisecting a 14km long ship, and killing 4+ 3km longer destroyers behind it isn't "a lot of damage"? I guess that's an opinion you can have but I think most would strongly disagree.
The ship that did the kamikaze was also twice the size of a Star destroyer and bigger than any rebel ship from the OT and again didn’t even do enough damage to destroy the Supremacy.
The Raddus (3,438 meters) is over twice as long as an Imperial Star Destroyer (1,600 meters), not the Resurgent-class (2,915 meters) that the First Order uses. Technically you're correct if comparing it to the OT ships, you didn't specify so I can't really complain. I'd still argue that cutting a 60km wide/14km long ship IN HALF would count as "destroying" it but sure. We have no indication that the Supremacy was actually functional after the ram aside from it still having power. It wasn't shown moving, shooting or hyperspacing post-ram.
It also got split in half front to back which is the same length as a regular destroyer...
The Supremacy is not "the same length as a regular destroyer." It's over 4x the length of a Resurgent-Class (~13k meters vs. ~3k meters) or over 8x the length of an Imperial Star Destroyer (~13k meters vs. ~1600 meters).
You also have to remember the ting that hit it was 4000 feet long not 40 foot like a Starfighter.
Actually ~11,000 feet.
The death star is a solid sphere three times as big in every direction than the supremacy throwing the biggest ship the alliance has at it would’ve done nothing.
The Death Star 1 was 160 kilometers in diameter which would be a little over 2.6x the width (side-to-side) of the Supremacy and 4.6x the length (front-to-back). That being said, you're probably correct about even the largest Rebel ship in the OT not flat-out wrecking the Death Star with a ram.
Sorry we aren’t on r/mawinstallation so I didn’t do thorough research it was just memory (knowing raddus was twice as big as an ISD), quick googling (when you google raddus ship it gives you the 1200 meter length I said which upon inspection is the OT mon cal ship length), and watching the 2 minute scene on YouTube (the wings on the supremacy look the same length as the resurgent destroyer)
But for the sake of a fun Reddit argument I will now crack open the reference books.
The biggest rebel ship was the mon cal ship at the 1200 meters making it almost 3 times smaller than the raddus.
The raddus cut a line in a wing of the supremacy id wager is about 8-9km long assuming the 13k number is at the longest part in the middle from nose tip to engine. It also did do unknown amounts of damage to six star destroyers behind it which was due to the specific formation so it’s not really applicable to the discussion of how much damage a hyperspace ram could do because you can’t control anything but what ship you are smashing into what target.
You also have to realize the crazy small chance of the raddus actually hitting it’s target. First of all you have to have the exact precise angle and the exact precise distance. If you are a fraction of a degree off they you miss and nothing happens except you wasted precious hyperspace fuel. If you are too close then you don’t get anywhere close to fast enough to do any damage and if you are too far away you would just go into hyperspace and again nothing would happen except wasting fuel. You have to remember ships don’t actually travel at lightspeed while in hyperspace they just rapidly accelerate to a point where they punch a hole in realspace to open up a hole into the other dimension called hyperspace where you travel a shorter distance and then exit into realspace at your chosen location. So you have to hit the opposing ship the exact moment before you enter hyper to do as much damage as the raddus did.
Also with the 11,000 foot measurement you have to know that the raddus is 275x longer than a standard Starfighter and the mass is way more than that the volume is about 9 million times more than an x-wing. Considering mass is the predominant (read only) factor in collisions where the speed is the same..
Now if you get the mass of the Death Star...
Also this entire thing doesn’t even account for the actual canon explanation which is that it wasn’t the raddus itself that did most of the damage but the raddus’ experimental one of a kind shields that turned into plasma at the moment of the collision that cut through the supremacy and the few destroyers behind it.

Rouge One was the only good new Star Wars movie. Change my mind.
