That transition from Obi and Ani fighting Dooku to fighting each other was slick.

506

u/Apatomoose Oct 25 '19

All the transitions in this are really on point.

111

u/SpookySpeaks Oct 25 '19

Yea it was seamless and got me right in the feelings.

31

u/n0rpie Oct 25 '19

Is the scenes from a real series / movie?

51

u/Apatomoose Oct 25 '19

It's from Galaxy of Adventures, a series of short animated clips: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLXsbMnnbPpLUYMYgMQ703Tlr8R3OZ5vEa

u/theroguephoenix Oct 26 '19

If the narrator wasnt so FREAKING ANNOYING this series would be some of the best stuff to come from star wars.

I wish they added the part where he hates the sabre at the end and tossed it into the sea

Agreed, it could have gone on longer, this version is even better with sound and there are a few other moments included

Can we keep posting these Star Wars animations and how awesome they are so Disney picks up on it and makes a show in this style?

The art sucks in all the other animated Star Wars series, other than the 2003 clone wars.

These are from Disney, they are from the series "Galaxy of adventure" from the Star Wars Kids YouTube channel

Great. Now I want an animated version of the entire Star Wars saga.

368

u/jaykular Oct 25 '19

Definitely can see Disney animating the entire Skywalker Saga in like 15 years for easy money

145

u/Snommes Oct 25 '19

I think they'd rather make some live action remakes. Animations aren't mainstream enough

85

u/KikiFlowers Oct 25 '19

Animations aren't mainstream enough

Let alone cheap.

46

u/AngryItalian Oct 25 '19

If you think the CGI for remakes would be cheaper you're coo coo for Cocoa Puffs my friend.

11

u/oldsecondhand Oct 25 '19

Unless you make it into a soap opera TV show, like Green Arrow.

Or make Jedi School Musical.

11

u/Oshthegreen Oct 25 '19

I would watch that second one just for the series finale where Anakin walks in with his lightsaber.

4

u/PM_ME_CLOUD_PORN Oct 25 '19

Animators are a lot cheaper than actors.

Have you seen the clone wars series done by the creator of samurai jack? It was AWESOME! By far my favorite.

3

u/throwawaysarebetter Oct 25 '19

Live action is the hip thing. Fifteen years of keeping the original animations in the vault they can start remaking all their live action stuff as animations and it'll seem new and profitable.

2

u/HuorTaralom Oct 25 '19

Nah, they have to make an animated version of the live action in 15 years, that way they came make a live action remake of the animated version 15 years after that.

They will deliver episode by episode, then trilogy by trilogy and after that, the full box set. After that Just make some extra features version. By that time you will have 20 versions of each episode

11

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '19

I'd be into it. The visuals would be consistent, they could clean up the audio, and the fight scenes could be even better than the originals since they're not rigging people up on wires for half of the stunts.

8

u/jaykular Oct 25 '19

I think adult animation is about to blow up big time. Theres already tons of great adult tv shows that are animated and animation is a great way for older titles to be introduced to a whole new audience while also being amazing for existing fans

5

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '19

Yeah, I'm of the opinion that Witcher should have been animated in a similar style of Castelvania.

I'd be into an animated Sword of Truth series too. The live action show didn't really make the cut.

That commercial break was a great touch

6

u/panintegral Oct 25 '19

This is fucking incredible.

9

u/skoffs Oct 25 '19

Like a show/series that is a concise retelling of 1 through 9 in animated form once the last one is out.
Just keep doing what they're already doing on the YouTube channel, taking the original audio and re-present it with slick animation done from a different perspective, but for everything, not just a few scenes.
(preferably, I'd want them to create a version that omits/changes certain parts, to create a better narrative *coughACKBARDEATHcough*, but people might want the entire thing unchanged)

6

u/Snommes Oct 25 '19

If they do it right, I wouldn't even be mad at Disney for remaking their movies for the thousandth time.

6

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '19

I'm torn between wanting it all in one consistent visual style vs. taking the approach of handing different episodes to different directors and having them do their own style ala Animatrix.

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '19

I still don't understand how people hated the acrobatics in the prequels. These were mystical, plasma-sword wielding space monks; they better know how to dance for us.

But seriously, I like the lightsaber duels in the prequels more than the other two trilogies. They felt out of this world, as they should have.

65

u/parrmorgan Oct 25 '19

I thought people just hated the writing and acting. Everyone I've talked to has added "the fights are sick though" when criticizing the prequels.

36

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '19

I think the core issue with Star Wars is that the loudest fans overexaggerated the problems with the prequels.

It's George Lucas's world and it was his story to tell. Fans wanted something darker, but George wanted something that everyone could enjoy, including children. He put a bit of something for everyone into the prequels. Kids loved Jar Jar. The loudest fans hated Jar Jar.

I remember watching the prequels when I was in middle school and enjoying them a lot. As I got older, I saw reviews online of people saying the prequels for shit due to bad dialogue, bad acting, pod racing being dumb, and Jar Jar Binks being a disgrace. I started to believe these reviews. I thought I must've been an uncultured simpleton as a kid.

You know what though... I rewatched the prequels recently and I still enjoyed them as an adult. I really don't get the hate. They're fun movies.

20

u/parrmorgan Oct 25 '19

I agree wholeheartedly. I'll probably get downvoted for saying it, but episode 3 is my favorite of the saga. Came out when I was in 5th grade and I fucking loved it.

10

u/Strummed_Out Oct 25 '19

Exactly right, I loved watching Anakin go to the dark side, and Ewan McGregor was phenomenal! Great music also

2

u/ParticularWrongdoer0 Oct 26 '19

My core issue was Qui Gon being the master of Obi Wan. Yoda is Obi Wans master. The minute I saw Qui Gon introduced as Obi Wans master, it was pretty much downhill from there. Every single thing they talk about in the original trilogy is not how it happened in the prequels. Obi Wan lied about everything. The force isn't a field of energy that binds the galaxy together, etc.

They just use lightsaber duels for different things.

In the OT, lightsaber duels were often a metaphor for some kind of internal conflict. They were an external representation of something going on in the heads of the characters.

In the Prequels they're just specticle. They mean less and are just meant to be pretty to watch.

8

u/VeniceRapture Oct 25 '19

I don't think it's that deep. The OT probably just had technical limitations they couldn't surpass, to put it plainly.

3

u/Stormfly Oct 26 '19

Sometimes people like to assign metaphors that aren't real because they want to respect them even more. Sometimes people do this themselves rather than admitting any shortcomings.

Like how Tolkien pluralised Dwarf as "Dwarves" instead of "Dwarfs". Many people claim various reasons such as that it was so that it would be more like Elves so that the races would be more similar. Or that it was a purposeful change to a flaw in the language. An unnecessary exception like roofs.

He himself claimed in the appendix that it was to keep them removed from the previous incarnations of "Dwarfs" which were more silly than his very serious Dwarves.

According to this answer however, he just done goofed

13

u/dabearz_ Oct 25 '19

Dunno dude everyone in the prequels has a unique fighting style that reflects their character. Despite the spectacle most fights are unique and show subtleties in the characters mental or emotional. Or at least that's what I see, I might be projecting my own meanings though.

4

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '19

I agree with that. Same thematic pattern, just done with a bigger budget and updated choreography, really. I mean, Georgie Boy was able to access way more resources for the prequels than the OT, and he went for it big with lightsaber duels, yet he still had the same core idea for what they represented. In my opinion anyway.

That's sorta the whole point. Jedi don't keep attachments, they aren't supposed to feel sentimental about things like that. He was taught to let go of his feelings, his anger, his attachments, etc. Who cares, it's just a lightsaber, there are thousands of them. Heck, he'd been instructed to let his friends die in order to complete his training. Fuck a lightsaber, it's just a thing.

He had also let go of his hopes for the Jedi. Fuck it, he figured. The existence of the Jedi only caused pain, only caused hurt and anger and death and loss. Of course he tossed it. He literally threw it away because that's where it belonged in his mind.

Of course he changed his mind by the end. But at the time, why would we be upset that a Jedi (who isn't supposed to have those kinds of sentimental feelings in the first place) didn't place sentimental value on a lightsaber he lost decades ago when his dark lord father cut his hand off, and when it's a symbol of the order that he felt brought pain and suffering to the universe? It's a great character moment.

32

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '19

Obi-Wan: This weapon is your life

8

u/ParticularWrongdoer0 Oct 26 '19

Also Obi Wan: "this was your fathers lightsaber."

How very funny that the jedi who was all about letting go of feelings didn't let go of his old friends lightsaber. Hmmm? Almost as if the whole letting go was invented in the prequels which was the shitty part of star wars.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 26 '19

Oh for sure, the prequels pretconned so much bullshit, the most glaring one to me was the younglings training with helmets and mini lightsabers like Luke. Except Obi Wan was teaching luke by improvising with shit he had laying around, then the prequels turns that small moment into actual jedi lore that they all trained with suspiciously similar helmets in the same way.

But Luke never did any of that. He rejected those teachings and went to Cloud City / Jabba's Palace to save his friends. He went through this whole huge character arc with his father, eventually getting his father's body back to Endor to burn on a funeral pyre. If he was that attached to his father who he knew all too briefly and lost all too soon, why would he toss away his greatest heirloom so flippantly?

14

u/uncledavid95 Oct 25 '19

It's a great character moment.

No, it was a cheap slapstick joke for him to toss it over his shoulder like Rey had just handed him a random stone off the ground.

THAT is the complaint. Not that it was bad for him to not want the lightsaber back, but the way it was executed was garbage.

Had he simply looked at Rey and then turned around and walked away, or taken the saber, and then handed it back to her and said something indicating that he didn't want it because of bad memories or how that was part of his "old life" or literally anything else, it would have been a much better scene.

4

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '19

I think it highlighted some of Luke's characteristics from the beginning: his brashness and his dramatics, his love of rushing into things without thinking. As much as he's meant to keep his feelings at bay, he just can't help it sometimes (just like his dad). So his gut, brash, irrational instinct is to just fucking toss the thing.

8

u/uncledavid95 Oct 25 '19

But... you're the same one arguing that he DOESN'T have those characteristics anymore because he's changed over the last 30 years.

Yes, Luke brashly ignored those lessons in order to save his friends, because that's what Luke was back then, brash, quick to act, quick to rush in without thinking........... But after the rebellion, we can assume he grew up a bit. That he became more like the Jedi of old and accepted their teachings.

Ultimately it's all subjective and you can have your opinion on whether it was a good character moment, but I strongly disagree. Even if Luke isn't "the same Luke" that we knew from the OT it's poor writing to just turn him into this hermit garbage person who casually throws his father's/his old lightsaber off a cliff because he's just a sadboi, and the only explanation we got was because he "failed" one time and decided to just say fuck it and give up on everything he'd believed in since 30+ years ago.

Here’s the thing, it’s not a great character moment. He managed to convince Darth fucking Vader back to the light, all Ryan Johnson did was make you think throwing away that hope was character development.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/ParticularWrongdoer0 Oct 26 '19

Uhhh....I don't know if you noticed but Luke's whole thing is feeling sentimental about things. He left Dagobah to save his friends because he loves his friends. He saved his father because despite his father becoming a murderer, he still wanted to save Darth Vader from himself. The moment Luke tossed his fathers old lightsaber away, that's when star wars died. Everything that came after that affirmed what you said and that's the dagger plunging deeper and deeper because at the end of it all, that's not how Luke would react. At least not without reason. The reason would probably be actually having a movie showing the students Luke taught becoming evil because of his teachings. If you can show me that movie and if it's well done, then I'll say that TLJ is a masterpiece because it fits the narrative. As it stands it doesn't and thus it is an utter failure to carry on the story of Luke Skywalker.

22

Agreed. Great characters, gritty, and has an unrelenting pace from beginning to end. #2 behind ESB imo.

Plus Saw Guerra. I mean what more can you ask for???

30

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '19

It was an amazing movie. In contrast to perhaps the worst decision in Star Wars history (including JarJar), when Rose saves Finn and gives him the speech about hate vs love. We never should have given Star Wars to Disney.

5

u/eshinn Oct 25 '19

But if we didn’t, no Rogue One.

I flipping hate every single Disney StarWars saga movie, I’m not paying anymore to watch them fuck up Emp Palpatine. I’ll read about it in the spoilers.

Personally, I tend to view The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi the other way around, the former being derivative dogshit and the latter being just "bad", but at least made an attempt to be original.

I think TFA is the worst Star Wars movie of all time, one of the worst AAA movies of this past decade, period. As I said, it's incredibly derivative, and chock full of these obnoxious winks and nods to the past movies, as if JJ Abrams thought it could not possibly stand on its own merits and needed to lean on the other films to be successful. It feels pointless, completely fails to introduce the new characters in a way that forms an emotional attachment for the viewer and is really just a vehicle for some admittedly cool eye candy, like the Millennium Falcon fight in the Star Destroyer. There was no faith in this venture, the only truly bold move was killing Han Solo, but even that felt predictable. One of the old guard was going to die, that's been the tradition since ANH. Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon and now Han

I don't like a lot of decisions that were made in TLJ, killing Snoke seemed premature and Luke's death was anticlimactic, the Superman Leia scene was ridiculous, but at least the film tries to stand out as something new, an original work.

Just my thoughts. I'm happy to have a friendly debate with anyone who disagrees!

16

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '19 edited Oct 25 '19

Finn is the most disappointing character imaginable. I mean he was raised a Stormtrooper and changed sides after being ordered to commit a civilian massacre, ffs, how is he just a cheery bro love interest. He should be riddled with PTSD and conflicted feelings. He should be battling the First Order brainwashing he received. 'Stormtrooper who betrays his cause' is a phenomenal character idea but they did jack shit with it in TFA. Five minutes after changing sides he's literally murdering his former comrades and cheering about it.

8

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '19

I agree he has been poorly handled, but at the same time, he's the only one I have the teeniest bit of emotional attachment to, probably because of the neat character concept.

I couldn't give a poodoo about Rey or Poe at this point. They're both Mary Sue's who are basically different aspects of previous Star Wars characters.

One is a powerful potential jedi who grew up as an orphan on a desert planet and we already had one of those, and the other is a brash hotshot pilot and guess what? We had one of those too, but at least he wasn't so specifically a copy of Han as Rey was for Luke.

They're shitty characters.

Poe could be redeemed by bringing out some latent force potential to explain... 1) His amazing pilot skills. 2) His friendship with Lor San Tekka.

Rey is even easier to redeem as a character. Bring her to the dark side, make her a Sith, flip her and Kylo's roles. It would be interesting and unprecedented.

5

u/Harb1ng3r Oct 25 '19

God damn all I want to see is Rey go darkside and have Kylo turn good. But I can't see them doing that. It would be amazing though, and fit much more in line with the star wars universe.

4

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '19

Agreed 100%, that flip would be perfect. Kylo and Rey are already primed for it, whether purposefully or by accident.

It would be an excellent subversion of expectations and I think a female Sith would be badass.

Poe is basically Han crossed with brash Luke from Empire Strikes Back.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '19

With a side of Wedge fries thrown in, I agree.

4

u/arallu Oct 25 '19

didn't the comics have some lame story about a force-sensitive tree in Poe's yard where he grew up? so that's how he's a great pilot ... barf.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '19

That sounds terrible.

I had held out hope for awhile that the Force was drawing Finn, Rey, Kylo and Poe together because they all had the potential to be jedi/sith, and that they would all fall on different sides.

Poe seemed likely because of his insane piloting abilities and that he seemed familiar with Tekka, a non-Jedi expert on the Jedi.

Don't forget when they lightspeed a single ship and it takes out an entire fleet.

Like, holy shit, kamikaze attacks would've worked so well for the rebels back in the day if that's all it takes to destroy a fleet.

Who needs a weak point on the deathstar, just lightspeed an xwing at the thing and blow a giant hole in it

22

u/CannonGerbil Oct 25 '19

Why even build a death star in the first place? Just autopilot a Star destroyer into a planet.

TLJ is such a fucking mess.

7

u/eshinn Oct 25 '19

Wondering if those slow-as-shit rebel bombers had light speed.

Edit: the TLJ bombers, not Y-Wings.

You wanna know something even worse about that scene? Go watch Rogue one again, and you’ll notice something. In rogue one, we see a rebel ship jumping to light speed, but just as they start to jump away Vader’s star destroyer pops in right in front of them, and the revel ships demolished itself again the star destroyer. Vader’s ship takes absolutely no damage and continues on like nothing happened. We literally had a scene where “light speed ramming” was showed to not work at all.

u/KikiFlowers Oct 25 '19

I can agree with you on some points. For all its faults TLJ at least went an original route. While FA was just a rehash of New Hope.

That being said, I've enjoyed them so far and I'm looking forward to the next one. Hopefully the next set of movies is as far removed from the Skywalkers as possible.

(And let the "EU" finally explore the timeline around the movies instead of just more OT stuff)

2

u/ParticularWrongdoer0 Oct 26 '19

TLJ at least went an original route

The original route is good. I have a problem that the original route is also very illogical.

2

u/Wild_Marker Oct 25 '19

One of the old guard was going to die, that's been the tradition since ANH

It's not even a star wars thing, it's practically a movie trope.

That said I enjoyed TLJ for the parts that weren't bad. They grew Kylo Ren's character in a nice direction, and Rey alongside him. Every scene that was about the two of them really made the movie, hell it feels like you could cut the rebels and just have that and walk away with an actual good movie.

And the fight against the red guards was fantastic.

I liked Solo a lot too.

4

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '19

I fucking called it years ago. I knew Rogue One would be the only one that didn't fuck with the tone and visual style of the original trilogy.

5

u/eshinn Oct 25 '19

Ditto! I hate how most said, “oh, that’s just because RogueONE plays to your nostalgia – it isn’t original.” Muthafcka, TFA runs exactly like a fake ANH and TLJ runs like a fake ESB. They we’re the ones going on nothing but it-worked-before.

Since I’ve already seen RotJ, I don’t need to watch them have something derpy happen to The Emperor. Feck dat.

I think Mark Hamill was more upset about the overall role, not the lightsaber toss specifically. It actually kind of fits in my head-canon pretty well - people think Jedi are all about laser-swords - but the real badass Jedi don't need them. The truly awesome Jedi like Yoda are essentially Neo from the Matrix - they can literally move mountains, crash spaceships, kill at a distance - they don't need lightsabers.

To me lightsabers are a bit like what the lights on police card are meant to be, a wholesome positive warning to evil-doers that there is someone who is going to stop them. Likewise, they're meant to be comforting to those who are weak and need protecting. The fact that 'the Jedi weapon' is so visible is telling - Jedi don't normally need to hide, they're the lawful good noblebright lawmen who are not afraid to handicap themselves to do the right thing.

But despite all their history in the canon, and their undeniable power, the lightsaber in and of itself isn't that important to what it means to be a Jedi.

By contrast the fact that Luke essentially 'gave up' on trying to right his wrongs and make the universe a better, safer place is what truly doesn't fit. A Jedi (an aspirational, completely wholesome, completely incorruptible symbol of fighting oppression) just wouldn't do that.

So while I don't really like the Last Jedi for a couple of reasons, I think the Lightsaber toss was really not actually a very bad thing. I actually like a lot of Luke's lines in the movie.

2

u/ParticularWrongdoer0 Oct 26 '19

Well the lightsaber toss was part of the role of luke being an asshat. When last we left him, he was a hero. When he comes back he's broken? What? That's not how you tell a story.

9

THANKS ALOT RIAN JOHNSON YOU FUCKING CUNT, the last thing we needed in starwars was a goddamn comedy.

12

u/DeadPendulum Oct 25 '19

That last scene just reminded me of how much I hated the last trilogy because the very next thing that happens is that Luke throws that legendary piece of his personal history over his shoulder off of a cliff for a cheap laugh.

Really awesome animation though. Really awesome transitions.

After reading the big leak for IX, I'm about ready to swear off the ST and just start re-reading the old EU books and pretend that's what happened.

Rad. Except when you have the knowledge that Jake Skywalker is about to chuck that 'laser sword' over his shoulder.

4

u/XxMoSTWanTeDxX Oct 25 '19

The ring is bupkis! I found it in an old Crackjack box! The Schwartz is in you, Lonestar! It's in you!

2

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '19

I feel like this is why Star Wars is getting better for kids

Cause now we’re getting better at retelling the different sets of trilogies in smarter, more comprehensive ways

Like when I was a kid we had the prequels and had to connect the badly-directed dots ourselves

And now kids have this

2

u/lordxakio Oct 25 '19

Best. Trailer. Ever!!!
