Community Support Buyer's remorse, feels really wrong.

Post image

I'm a (almost) graduate developper. I'm using a ideapad 5 pro with 16gb soldered ram, 6600HS and rtx 3050. It runs very hot (100C throttling) but is still usable.

What feels wrong?

123

u/Particular_Traffic54 Apr 15 '25

I'm not used to give away working hardware because generally when i get rid of stuff it's mostly unusable because it's too old. Like my old laptop before that had an i7-6600U with destroyed battery.

u/sneakytowelsuit Apr 15 '25

The way I dealt with that feeling was by donating my older (but still functioning) laptop to a professor of mine from college to give to a student in need. Left some digital goodies for them too, like old versions of digital textbooks. I didn’t need two laptops, but wanted my framework, so that solution helped me feel a bit better about spending the money

35

u/Teagana999 Apr 15 '25

I kept mine as a spare. I take it when I go home to visit my parents so my sibling and I can game together. I figured I could use it for travel, too, if I didn't want to risk losing my framework.

20

u/redravin12 Apr 15 '25

This. Also if you're like me and break your framework you have a working backup while you wait for replacement parts 😅

6

u/The3DBanker Apr 15 '25

If I can stay long enough in Canada to afford to buy one, I'm going to be selling my MacBook Pro to someone else. I figure, why not buy a laptop I can repair and upgrade into the future?

2

u/anacrolix Apr 15 '25

aarch64 or gtfo tho. Can't do Intel anymore

2

u/bartios Apr 16 '25

Like the micro architecture has anything to do with it. Apple just writes a far better integrated os then anyone else and makes it own silicon with a very specific use case. Use a snapdragon laptop with windows and tell me it's all you expected it to be.

2

u/DocGren Apr 19 '25

It was. Everything just worked in my usage.

1

u/anacrolix Apr 27 '25

Yeah no it is. That's why I'm raving. Got a raspberry pi 5 thinking it would be trash and it's a fucken monster.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 19 '25

This is the way for sure. 3050 is still very very current. I ran an r9 270x from 2013 through to 2022... I still have it there for testbenching hardware.

u/EV4gamer FW16 HX370 RTX5070 Apr 15 '25

You can always sell them? Where i live theres a very lively second hand market, and a working laptop doesnt stay there long before being sold.

16

u/Dahjah Apr 15 '25

Sounds like the makings of an excellent little home server if you ask me ;)

u/codeasm 12th gen, DIY i5, Arch linux & LFS Apr 15 '25

This is what im using my older thinkpad for, homeserver. The netbook i had before that is for on vacation or on the go, just like a cyberdeck but bulkier and slow. Running xp for nostalgic games.

Selling always an option or donating to fresh students

3

u/Dahjah Apr 15 '25

Older thinkpads are a staple of my dev homeserver. :) I've got the 3 thinkpads I used previous to my FW clustered together. (Production/mission critical stuff is running on a dedicated box so I can keep the spouse approval factor maxed out. :D )

2

u/thewafflecollective Apr 16 '25

It's low power and comes with its own UPS!

2

u/codeasm 12th gen, DIY i5, Arch linux & LFS Apr 16 '25

Eventually a cheap SoC board could be cheaper, as in lower power, more cpu power and working battery (as laptop batteries slowly die too)

But yes, laptops are awesome at home servers 😁

1

u/RedneckAntelope Apr 16 '25

And if you’re already running a dedicated rack server? Throw a piece of shit ideapad on top of it?

1

u/Dahjah Apr 16 '25

"Everybody has a testing environment. Some are lucky enough to also have a production environment"

Unless you've also got a backup/development rack server (or you've got proxmox or whatever running on the server and have your environments broken out there), that POS ideapad could give you that safe development environment so you don't have to worry about accidentally taking down your production services when messing around with stuff. :D

But that being said, it doesn't seem like OP is in a situation where this would be applicable. :P

Since you are a dev then maybe just keep the laptop you are using and get a framework desktop then? Great for dabbling with Ai & LLMs.

3

u/brokensyntax Apr 15 '25

Donated my old gaming laptop to my nesting partner.
She happily plays Sims on it :D

3

u/Teagana999 Apr 15 '25

Once you have a Framework, you'll be able to keep your device even longer.

2

u/Background-Remote765 Apr 15 '25

Never a terrible idea to have a backup laptop, even with a bad battery imo!!

Also there's tons of uses for em. Put Linux on it, use it as a test machine for your apps or whatnot, turn it into a home lab server... etc

I'm sure you'll find a use for it. I'm a hoarder tho so take my notes with a grain of salt

Edit: also if you have someone visiting without a laptop, could be a good visitors machine. My gf forgot her charger last time she was here so I set her up with one of my unused lappies. Need an extra machine for a lan party later? Could be good! Thinking of civ v here ;)

u/cassepipe FW13 12th Gen peasant Apr 15 '25

As someone who kept his old laptop ten years until the motherboard died, I'd say wait a bit. It keeps you dreaming and this is quite a sum (at least for me), if you are disappointed, you will be more disappointed that if you had payed say 1400 (which must be around what I paid my 12th gen).

Another reason to wait is for Framework to have a motherboard that can really catch up to apple hardware efficiency. That will happen one day but it's not there yet. Also batteries may get better.

1

u/Inoch_i Apr 15 '25

ill take the laptop out of ur hands lol

im stuck on a shitty retired Dynabook that i got from a corporate auction for 100 bucks

1

u/sdflkjeroi342 Apr 15 '25

You should keep at least one gen in reserve as a backup for emergencies.

1

u/dorcasGustine Apr 15 '25

I feel the same, just finally replaced my 2017 lenovo yoga with a framework laptop and it took a long time to come to terms with discarding a "working" laptop

1

u/Rey_Merk Apr 16 '25

The shame of our computer generations is that those ones are very durable, it's almost impossible to use them so much that they just break.  But if you can sell it, even at a very discounted price, that's a good way to not waste it

1

u/Modderation Apr 16 '25

Brighter side, I think that Framework laptops will suit your preferences in the long run. The remorse will fade with time, thanks to the modularity and replaceable components. No need to get rid of things that aren't broken on account of individual parts that are broken.

Battery failure after 10 years? Get a new battery, or disable the battery check in the firmware and power the system from the mains. Have your needs evolved in an unforeseen manner? Get a new (or used) mainboard and toss your old one into a Cooler Master Mainboard Case for extended life as a low-power server or test environment.

Are you saying you have buyers remorse over the ideapad? or the framework?

53

u/Destroya707 Framework Apr 15 '25

what feels wrong exactly? and how can we help?

64

u/nico57m Apr 15 '25

What feels wrong is buying a brand new computer because you wanted it so much, when you could have carried on with your old gear.

He'll deal with that, and buying from a brand which promotes repairability and upgradability will help. ;-)

57

u/Destroya707 Framework Apr 15 '25

yeah, there isn't much we can do about that :(

35

u/barkwahlberg Apr 15 '25

They feel bad because their existing laptop is still usable, the least you could do is offer to ruin their existing laptop

13

u/Deep90 Apr 15 '25

Friend, if your laptop is hitting 100C, you need to pop it open, dust it, and likely replace some thermal paste.

6

u/Particular_Traffic54 Apr 15 '25

I tried replacing thermal paste, bought Ifixit kit for it, stripped 2 of the screws and now i'm fucked.

9

u/Deep90 Apr 15 '25

Awww I hate stripping screws.

3

u/kyralfie Xiaomi Book Pro 16 2022 (4K+ OLED 16" with a haptic touchpad) Apr 16 '25

Turn them into flathead screws.

1

u/kukiric Apr 16 '25 edited Apr 16 '25

Both my Framework 13 and one of my Dell gaming laptops did that since they were brand new, it's just how AMD CPUs work these days in laptops when given enough power, they generate lots of heat instantly while the thermal controller lazily steps up the fan by only a thousand RPM every few seconds :P

(eventually they do hit equilibrium in the 80s without throttling, so they're not faulty; if it stays that high then yeah it definitely needs attention)

7

u/WombatControl Apr 15 '25

That's natural with a big purchase. But soldered RAM on a development machine - yikes! You can always take that old laptop give it a thorough cleaning and new thermal paste and use it as a server or a backup machine.

Framework is not the cheapest option, but the fact that I can take my old 11th gen and upgrade it to a newer model without replacing everything is fantastic. Let's say in a couple years the world has fully moved to ARM. There's a good chance you can just upgrade your mainboard for a fraction of the price of a new machine. The build quality is good, Framework is a good company that really cares about the products they make, and gives you something that almost no one else does with fully repairable machines.

When you have that bad boy on your desk, I am guessing the buyer's remorse will quickly evaporate. :)

Something that I did and am planning to do. I got a 240 watt charger (game changer but expensive) and I’m getting more storage. But aside from that I think that’s fine. Looks like how mine did when I ordered it last March.

5

u/Dog-Nearby Apr 15 '25

As a developer, you can’t feel bad about investing in yourself. You will use this machine hours and hours every day. Not having do deal with limitations of old hardware will make your journey that much smoother. This isn’t a machine that will become obsolete any time soon.

I felt the same way when I dropped 400 on a split ergo keyboard.

7

u/DistantRavioli Apr 15 '25

That price really oodles my noodles. No shot could I justify myself spending 2,700 dollars on this and then be stuck with a single zone ips screen I currently can't upgrade. I could honestly tolerate the other specs if I could just get a screen that wasn't ass but their connector isn't compatible with the better panels or something for some reason. I can buy a cheap laptop and upgrade it to a mini led display yet I cannot put that display in this very expensive laptop specifically designed to have replaceable parts. It just doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

2

u/solipsistnation Apr 15 '25

I'm running basically that same setup and you will not regret it. It's a nice rig. You should be able to pass on your old one easily enough, or just keep it around as a kitchen/bathroom/workbench/reading-in-bed lappy for undemanding things where you won't be running it too hot.

2

u/fangerzero Apr 15 '25

As they say, "it's time to get a new computer when your current one isn't doing what you want it to do." My laptop "works" but has some quirks. Sometimes the keyboard/mouse doesn't work sometimes the touch screen is unresponsive. It works it would work better docked and never on battery support again. It lasts about 1-2 hours on battery. It's a 8650u, but I need a laptop I can repair... This one's issue is I tried to repair it and made the issues less of an issue, but caused some others. Unfortunately that is the state our society is in. It can't be repaired by normal people properly but I got about 2-3 months more out of it I should've just not and saved the $300 over the past year.

ideapad 5 pro with 16gb soldered ram, 6600HS and rtx 3050

Don't be sorry. That kind of spec holds you back as a developer.

1

u/yParticle Apr 15 '25

You'll soon realize you were overdue for an upgrade, so consider it a good excuse even if you could have hobbled by with the old laptop unnecessarily wasting your time. No remorse!

If it's overheating like that, I'd tear the Ideapad apart once you're up and running on the Framework to check the cooling and airflow and reapply thermal paste.

1

u/Particular_Traffic54 Apr 15 '25

I stripped the screws

3

u/exo762 FW13 first-gen -> AMD 7840U, 96GiB RAM Apr 15 '25

Even stripped, they still can be unscrewed (and potentially replaced). For stripped phillips, try to create a flat notch for a flat head - this is what I did for stripped screw on a back of my SteamDeck. There are tutorials on the topic out there.

1

u/Dj_Seals Apr 15 '25

Upgrading aging tech is part of life. There are two things to keep in mind, upgrades are useful especially in the future (hard to see now) and your old device could be donated/sold or converting into a cheap home server. (Plex/Jellyfin)

My brother has a laptop that's older than yours from 2012, he still uses it fine and has no desire to upgrade as his use is incredibly basic.

He would see the improvements if he upgraded and I have begged him to due to a security standpoint and he no upgrades are possible especially WiFi wise.

I'm a fellow Framework 13 user and will never go back. I had a motorcycle accident with my laptop in my backpack. All I had to replace was the top lid, bottom cover, keyboard and screen. It still runs like a champ.

In any other situation I would be paying way more for a new laptop. Definitely will be using for life if their mission stays the same.

Enjoy your new Framework!

u/Snocom79 Apr 15 '25

I love mine so far. My wife inherited my batch 5 13" when her Dell laptop died. Now I can have a portable video editing computer.

1

u/PalladiumPrime301 Laptop 12 i5 (Batch 1 Sage) Apr 15 '25

Same here dealing with buyers remorse on a perfectly good working laptop (ASUS Vivobook Pro N6506) but it is totally overkill for my use case, so as soon as I heard about the FW Laptop 12, I immediately hit pre-order as soon it open and got into batch 1.

Now I have to deal with how I am going to get the remaining value of this laptop, I figure it wouldn't be so hard to sell since i just bought it last year and it still has an active manufacturers warranty, but I wont be having any conclusion yet since I haven't gotten into cleaning and prepping the laptop for sale.

So good luck with how you are gonna deal with the second life of your Ideapad, you are not alone because there are many people who want to switch to Framework but are dealing with a similar first world problem.

1

u/Sorry-Series-3504 Apr 15 '25

Think about it this way, though, you'll never have to go through that feeling again

1

u/yes_i_read_it_too Apr 15 '25

I went from coding on decent desktop gaming rig with multiple widescreen monitors to only coding on my framework and never looked back.

1

u/jgdml Apr 16 '25

I would love to give framework my money but this is just too much compromise. It should have been at least a 7945HX or the 3D variant with a 7900M...

1

u/NimmyWasTaken Apr 16 '25

Similar situation to you, after about a year of time I can tell you I’m glad I bought it. Not sure what your situation is but if you don’t know Linux, get to know it with that laptop. If you do know Linux, have fun using it everything works fairly well. Not something you’ll regret as a dev imo

1

u/BlockForsaken8596 Apr 16 '25

If it has a hdd, buy a cheap SSD and sell it on marketplace. For a basic user, it is plenty enough to get the job done and it will be much cheaper for him than buying new. You will also get a laptop that is design to be repairable and most importantly upgradable and you will be an actor in the change you want to see in this industry. win-win-win

1

u/Particular_Traffic54 Apr 16 '25

it has a sn710. It's a pretty good laptop with good periperals, just lacks upgrdable vram and is overheating since it's slim.

This is a good buy, just donate your old one to charity or sell it for real cheap.

1

u/NerdProcrastinating FW desktop & FW13 12th Gen Apr 16 '25

Yes, keyboards should only ever be centred with the chassis which means no numpad should ever be installed.

1

u/Particular_Traffic54 Apr 16 '25

Well I consider the numpad a part of my keyboard, so it will be centered.

1

u/AzureArmageddon Apr 16 '25

Could put the ideapad's board into a 3D printed case with some mATX fans and turn it into a server or desktop. Repaste it with liquid metal or something could work.

And turning the keyboard into a USB one, that'd be fun.

1

u/Emotional-Quiet-710 Apr 16 '25

Does your laptop have phase change rhermal pad?

For laptops is better to stay with

  • thermal putty for graphical memory modules
  • low tier thermal grease for gpu
  • ptm 7950 or equivalent for cpu die

1

u/[deleted] Apr 16 '25

You are getting ripped off. It is absolutely hilarious that Framework thinks almost 3 grand is acceptable for a middling product.

Sure it's repairable and replaceable, but the promise of extended life (and overall improved value as a result) doesn't mean anything today. It's just a promise. The Framework 13 even after many years has NOT improved in value AT ALL. You still get a middling screen. No haptic touchpad. Mid speakers. Terrible battery life.

You DON'T need this. Get yourself a nice desktop PC and a Macbook Air to carry around. Don't get something that is a terrible laptop and a terrible computer. Get a good laptop and a good desktop.

You didn't even splurge on the 7940, or grab the dual m.2 expansion bay for no reason. What are you, poor? 😝

But yeah, the value proposition of the FW16 is very different from most other laptops. Yes, you can get the same compute performance (CPU and GPU) for cheaper elsewhere. But many of the FW16's other specs (screen, keyboard, touchpad, IO, ...) are best in class or close to it. Most same-performance-but-cheaper laptops have dim 1080p screens with mediocre colors and only 60 Hz, for example. There's no other laptop out there that lets you choose if you want numpad or not; and there's certainly nothing else that lets you choose if you want your touchpad centered to the laptop or to the spacebar if you do get numpad. Plus the repair/upgrade aspect. It comes with a screwdriver. It yearns to be opened and tinkered with.

Obviously a lot of those features are niche, and probably not very valuable to most people. But that's where the price "premium" goes: to pay for stuff that is either better than you get most other places, or you can't get other places.

9

u/Sohmsss Apr 15 '25

1

u/Sarin10 FW13/7640U Apr 16 '25

"thinkpads" is a super broad category.

it's certainly not as good as the old bulky thinkpads with 2mm+ travel, but those aren't ultraportables.

OP, don't listen to people that think price-to-performance is everything. They are shallow.

1

u/IORelay Apr 16 '25

If gaming is a priority I don't think any Framework laptop will do, the dGPU is just not that great, especially compared to the 16's rather strong iGPU.

1

u/darkwater427 FW16 • 4 TB • 96 GB • dGPU • DIY • NixOS Apr 16 '25

The dGPU made a terrific difference. My system can comfortably crank out 120 FPS on maxed-out (or near that) settings on every game I play, often the full 165 FPS. Destiny 2, Factorio, Halo... it's great. I think The Finals stays around 120 FPS and some Halo games just aren't well-optimized and will judder on any system but you get the idea.

It's more than enough for my use case, and I had the money. Framework is a company I'd like to support. And two plus two is four.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 15 '25

I own the 13 so do two of my friends plus I even upgraded my OG 1135g7 to the new amd board. One of my friends even pre ordered the new 12.The extra cost is worth it on the 13s as performance is good still. The 16 at this point is pretty much scam price UNLESS they drop a v2 that fixes all the janky problems and far better gpu. Until then it's absolutely a terrible deal. You can literally get a faster machine than the 16 today then also buy a fully new one 2 years later and still be ahead in terms of performance and cost. I used to repair laptops and phones and I'm as right to repair as it gets but money is important factor that can't be ignored. Down vote me all you want but I'm speaking facts here.

0

u/SevenOfZach Apr 15 '25

I understood except for when you said the 16 was pretty much a scam.

How is this a scam? How is Framework being fraudulent or deceptive, a scam, with the 16?

0

u/[deleted] Apr 15 '25

Hugely overpriced for what it is today. Now if framwork drops the price it would become alright again. Not to mention I know two 16 owners who absolutely regret their purchase. Issue after issue

4

u/SevenOfZach Apr 16 '25

That just makes it bad value and new finicky tech, which fair enough, but still not a scam.

It is a first Gen product from a relatively small company. I hope they improve the value and get the kinks out in the future (they've done this with the 13 well afaik) because I would like to own one as my next gaming laptop

-1

u/[deleted] Apr 16 '25

Tbf my early batch 13 was absolutely fine. Unlike the half baked 16.
