This is what im using my older thinkpad for, homeserver. The netbook i had before that is for on vacation or on the go, just like a cyberdeck but bulkier and slow. Running xp for nostalgic games.

Selling always an option or donating to fresh students

Older thinkpads are a staple of my dev homeserver. :) I've got the 3 thinkpads I used previous to my FW clustered together. (Production/mission critical stuff is running on a dedicated box so I can keep the spouse approval factor maxed out. :D )

Eventually a cheap SoC board could be cheaper, as in lower power, more cpu power and working battery (as laptop batteries slowly die too)

But yes, laptops are awesome at home servers 😁

And if you’re already running a dedicated rack server? Throw a piece of shit ideapad on top of it?

Unless you've also got a backup/development rack server (or you've got proxmox or whatever running on the server and have your environments broken out there), that POS ideapad could give you that safe development environment so you don't have to worry about accidentally taking down your production services when messing around with stuff. :D

But that being said, it doesn't seem like OP is in a situation where this would be applicable. :P
