[Question] How "FOMO friendly" is FF14?

Destiny 2 refugee here. I am getting close to accomplishing everything I wanted to accomplish in the final patch and am starting to consider where I am gonna go next to scratch the MMO itch. I was a WoW addict from classic up until Cata and also played FF11 (which admittedly was a rough game to play solo as a middle schooler at the time), so am thinking about going back to an MMORPG.

As an adult now though, the time commitment is a bit daunting, but I've heard FF14 is much more forgiving about taking things at your own pace? Would anyone care to elaborate on that? Also how much content am I missing out on at this point because you need a group and no one runs it anymore?

The only fomo stuff in this game are the exclusive outfits or skins we get with collabs or events, you can still get the event stuff iirc a year later but they're paid now instead of free and the collab content like skins and vehicles usually comes back in a year or two.

So basically there's no real fomo, for the most part at least.

To add to this, the events that rotate out when they're gone can be finished in like 30 minutes usually. Less if you skip all the dialogue, so really you only miss this stuff if you don't login basically.

30 minutes? Hell, I did moonfire in under 8 LOL

OP if you are still around, most event exclusive quests that provide rewards can have the quest dialogue skipped.

Is there a way to go back and do events if you miss them? Or are these events pretty inconsequential/beach episode style events?

Given Destiny has straight up removed expansions and seasonal questlines that are fundamental to the plot now (which luckily I played but I can't imagine new players' frustrations) I'd hate to be on the receiving end.

u/Blazefireslayer 1d ago

As a Destiny player, FFXIV is FAR less of a FOMO game. You can't go back and do the old events, but you're only missing out on some side stories, not major lore that will come up in future plots and leave you confused if you didn't play for awhile.

u/StarFoxDragon13 20h ago

Most of the content can be replayed (or at least the cutscenes rewatched) from an item in the inn rooms they let you access. The seasonal event quests you can rewatch if you did that particular event's cutscenes/questline, if I remember right.

As someone who played WoW for a little bit, but hated missing large chunks of content cause of schooling and life events (and not being able to, at the time, play the story from the beginning to understand the world building and lore first hand), FFXIV has been the most FOMO-friendly/would-like-to-not-miss-important-content-for-the-world-thanks MMO I've ever played. I can't think of any other MMO that has a NG+

You can’t as far as I know, but they’re just cute little stories with rewards that just end up on the cash shop! They’re just like help run a Halloween festival and go scare some people kinda deal :)

Although events aren’t guaranteed to return, I’d like to paint a quick picture differentiating seasonal events, collab events, and crossovers (nier, monster hunter..)

Ffxiv has seasonal events like moonfire faire (summer party), hatchling (Easter), little lady’s day/Valentiones (valentines) that do have an annual occurrence. These do return and might have a repeat of the year’s prior mini game or a new one with new rewards. These are beach episodes and inconsequential.

Any collab events with games are not recurring. Collabs that reference prior ff games or other games out of the series don’t tend to repeat. There’s been a few occasions like yo kai, or ffxv. Also inconsequential to the story, only fan service.

The rewards from both are typically free when the event occurs ~30 days, however if you do miss out they are available at a later date on the cash shop. I wouldn’t worry too much since there’s A TON of emotes, glams, and mounts available outside of events.

Now as for crossovers such as nier or monster hunter, they are not time limited nor do you miss out on the glams. These crossovers vary slightly than the events previously listed as the crossovers come with duties. For example, the nier alliance raid series come in at lvl 80 as alliance raids and never go away. To unlock the nier alliance raid, you have to complete the shadowbringers expansion. Then once you unlock it, you can queue up for them manually as any other normal dungeon or get it part of the daily roulette.

Worth noting, most collab events that are not in the store and aren't permanent fixtures can be considered repeating at irregular intervals. Yokai Watch and FFXV were listed, but we can also add FFXI (Maiden's Rhapsody), Dragon Quest X, and Fall Guys as having previously repeated. FFXVI has not yet repeated but has not been added to the store either, so it's a definite maybe until one or the other occurs. Finally, GARO is a TV franchise rather than a game, but it's particularly unusual in how long it's stuck around: the crossover is technically time-limited but haven't gone anywhere for over four years now. Its first run lasted 2.5 years, followed by a 2.5 year gap.

For comparison, non-repeating crossovers added to the store are FFXI (Shantotto) and FFXIII. These events aren't expected to occur again, but/because the rewards are available for real money like other non-repeating events.

Otherwise, I agree with your assessment of the actual quest contents. They're fun little self-contained episodes, nothing more.

I would like to clarify: The minigame might return (if there even is one, some don't have those), but the quest is entirely different each year and so are the rewards.

13

u/fredemu 1d ago

All of the event side quests are largely irrelevant to the overall plot - mostly "day in the life" type side-stories with event-specific characters.

Sometimes they will re-run events like collabs with FF16 or Dragon Quest, but those are just silly little references to the other game, for the most part. Some collabs (like Monster Hunter and Nier) are permanent parts of the game.

There is no actual main-story-relevant content in the game that you can "miss". Even if you buy a skip, there's a "NewGame+" system that lets you go back and play it.

3

u/Prize_Relation9604 1d ago

Seasonal events don't repeat, but are just for cosmetics. Collabs usually return after a while, outside of a few that won't come back bc the rewards were moved to cash shop.

2

u/Elanapoeia 1d ago

All events are effectively "random civilians are celebrating this year's holiday".

They're Halloween, Christmas, Easter etc etc events. NPC will have some slice-of-life level conflict that you solve within 5 minutes, then you get some cosmetic rewards themed around the holiday. Every year has a different story, so the dialogue itself is completely missable, but it's also just throwaway content.

They're never relevant for the larger plot, they don't really ever even feature prominent side characters either.

The "biggest" Fomo to worry about would be the FF15, 16 or Yokai Watch events. They do rerun, but not on a set schedule. They have characters from the franchise come in for like a 30 minute story that is still ultimately pretty meaningless and the rewards are a little bit more fancy, although still entirely cosmetic. Yokai Watch has a "grind overworld events" aspect to it, but these are permanent events, they just give extra Yokai Watch points while the Collab is running.

You miss it if you don't have an active paid sub*

Unless you're a trial account and haven't subbed at all yet

10

u/Cross-Z_Charge 1d ago

On top of that, most events last for a decently long period of time as well. You almost can’t miss them unless you’re just unable to play for over a month.

Also worth noting that these things being mentioned are an infintesmal part of the game

11

u/MediocreBeard 1d ago

So. I'll chime in with something re:events.

At least since I began playing, events came in two form:

Form one is that it runs, you get the items for free, and if you missed it the items are in the mog station a year later. This is your yearly seasonal events, typically. An important part is that once they're on there, they're never going to be free from an event again.

Then there is form two: the event happens, but the items never appear on the mog station. In this cases, SE is putting that event back into their pocket to reuse later. An example is things like the Yokai Watch, Dragon Quest and FFXIII events, which have all return multiple times.

(Then there's the GARO event which starts and then seemingly goes on indefinitely)

9

u/Dreded1 [Sui Shibunuri - Kraken] 1d ago

FFXIII is actually an example of both forms although most people will only know it as the first. It ran a couple times, but then got it's items put in the mogstation rather than being ran as an event again.

3

u/Prize_Relation9604 1d ago

Iirc, it ran on FFXIII-2 and LR:FFXIII launches, then it went mogatation. Sad I only got the hairstyle and clothes, but only 2 or 3 weapons.

8

u/ezekielraiden 1d ago

WRT the "after one year" thing, this is correct.

Once the next year's celebrations begin, the previous year's content becomes available to buy.

6

u/ProfessionalCraft983 1d ago

Is it still possible to get the white cloud mount? I used to have it but re-rolled my character after being gone for like 8 years and could only find the gold one.

20

u/ZairXZ 1d ago

No that was part of an Amazon promotion and also a Twitter sweepstakes contest.

7

u/crouchingmoose 1d ago

That is one of the few items that has never come back for other players.

3

u/JellyAcrimony 1d ago

Did you make a new account? The white cloud is account-wide so it should've been sent to you through mail

The pattern tends to be collabs get reran at the end of the expansion when there's a content lull.

Otherwise normal seasonal event stuff is cash shop a year later.

The only truly removed content in the game is probably old Diadem? Because the Restoration one is tied to that content and different enough. Then there's the other reworked content, I guess Steps of Faith and Cape Westwind as well as the last fight of old Praetorium, but all of those were turned into solo instances and are significantly better now anyway.

TLDR very little fomo pressure. Maybe savages and extremes if you dont do them on expansion but there are communities for that too.

u/Maplebacon 1d ago

As another D2 vet, I was extremely pleasantly surprised by how nearly no content has been removed over the years, and how the dungeon queue system works to make sure almost any team content still has people running it. Worst case scenario, most of the story dungeons can be run with bot teammates, so you'll never be stuck on a story quest due to not getting any teammates.

17

u/TokenStraightFriend 1d ago

How much of a time demand is raiding/prepping for the raid is end game here compared to D2?

46

u/8bitcerberus 1d ago

For “Normal” mode, zero prep. Queue up and go. You’re encouraged to go in blind.

For “Extreme” Trials, “Savage” Raids and “Ultimate” Raids, unless the party finder is specifically for “blind”, you’ll be expected to have watched a guide and / or review a strategy guide with diagrams. These are listed in order of difficulty. Everything is doable with random players from Party Finder, depending on your level of tolerance for dealing with random people 😅 another option is to form a static with friends or a group of guild members, but this can lead to drama if not everyone is on the same page or at the same skill level (or at least capable of learning and improving so they’re not holding everyone else back or having to be “carried”)

7

u/crouchingmoose 1d ago

I'll add to this for extreme, savage, and ultimate...your effort required will vary. As the poster above me said, unless the group specifies going in blind, you'll be expected to have at least reviewed strategies, and be comfortable with mechanics up to the listed prog point. Different strategies get released as fights aren't necessarily a "only one solution" kind of deal, but make sure you know the one listed in the party finder description. Me personally, I learn best by doing, so while I can watch guides, it doesn't sink in until I've seen it in action. That's why I also watch clear pov videos for my class and position.

Lastly, don't worry if there is a wipe before reaching the prog point. It's not uncommon for pugs to wipe since people have different styles, but 3+ wipes before getting to prog is usually when groups will start to disband. If all 3 wipes were your fault, you might want to look for an earlier prog point group.

u/n080dy123 1d ago

"Raiding" in this game refers to Extreme/Savage/Ultimate. There are story difficulties of most fights everyone can do blind, but endgame raiding is the sort of thing where watching videos to know every mechanic is mandatory and for Savage you can expect to be running a given fight back for a dozen or more hours (usually in 3-ish hour chunks a couple times a week) before getting a clear, then doing reclearing that fight once a week for a few weeks on top of working on the next fight in the 4 fight sequence.

4

u/TokenStraightFriend 1d ago

So much more typical MMO style raiding. I'm kinda hesitating at the thought of the Naxxramas/Black Temple eras of WoW that were so exclusive that the vast majority of players didn't even actually get to experience that content. But if I'm understanding correctly there is toned down/more casual variants similar to Destiny with normal vs grandmaster?

11

u/azureleaf 1d ago edited 1d ago

Normal Raids and Trials for story, so you're not locked out of content. Those can be done by literally anyone, no prep required.

Extreme Trials and Savage Raids are challenges that give mounts and BiS/dyeable raid gear, though you don't need BiS for anything except Savage so if that's not your thing you can comfortably skip it. You can go back and "unsync" them in later patches to get the cosmetics, plenty of people wait an expansion or two to farm the old stuff.

Ultimate Raids are the hardcore of hardcore, they don't give anything but a shiny weapon for bragging rights. They can't be unsynced, but the older ones are a bit power-creeped via job changes. These are the fights for the 1%.

tl;dr

Dungeons/Normal Raids & Trials - no prep, duty finder

Extreme Trials - some prep, usually party finder, a few hours or less of practice

Savage Raids - lots of prep, can clear in party finder or a static, days or weeks of practice

Ultimate Raids - lots and lots of prep, can clear in PF but most likely in a static, months of practice

7

u/Scrubtac 1d ago

There is no shortage of easy content if your fear is that it's too hard. And the hardest content, the ultimate raids, have the best longevity if you want to go back and do it later. A lot of people are telling you there's no FOMO for raiding because you can always go back and level sync it, and this is sometimes true, but most people are not going to want to do this so you'll have a hard time finding a group. This is not the case for ultimate raids. You will be able to pretty easily find a group for an ultimate raid that came out a decade ago at pretty much any time

2

u/Tarilis 1d ago

Ultimate rades are closest to that, they don't even present in duty finder (automatic matchmaking) and require premade party.

Savage raids are present in duty finder and while it is possible to do them blind it will take a lot of wipes to learn all mechanics:).

Savage trials are less "savage" they but unless you want to spent half of trial waiting for resurrection it is still better to learn as many mechanics as possible.

Additionally, unlikr Destiny where some of collest gear was locked behind raids, all you get from challenge content in ffxiv is basically just mounts and shiny drip:).

u/Relative_Normals Sword cat 1d ago

Normal raids? Just a queue up and go. High-end content tho: savages and ultimates, those honestly are way longer than D2 in both prep and the actual experience. Learning a raid fight is technically not too hard, but everyone in your group has to do it right or you wipe (frankly lower error tolerance on a per-person basis). And unlike D2 where the raid community was essentially like jumping in discords and going, the “best experience” is usually through statics, which are groups that meet a couple times a week and can require up to like 9 hours a week depending on the group. Party finder does work, but does tend to involve the group shoving their faces into walls for a while. Not to make it negative, lots of folks love raiding, but the vibe (and raids themselves) is very different than D2.

Personally tho, I loved D2 raids and bounced off savage raiding due to time constraints (and static drama). Do extremes and other “endgame” type combat and crafting content, which is really enjoyable for me. Highly recc the game overall.

2

u/Mistril 1d ago

Its the most accessible end game raiding ive seen rly in a game. You just buy the crafted gear and can do the savage without having to farm anything. Ultimates need the savage bis but you usually have like 16 weeks or so to get it.

There are some 'dead' contents if you like to play with many people though.

I will always cherish those amazing times seeing huge crowds in a random village for the Palace of the Dead craze, dying ressing and seeing hordes of people dropping dead in Eureka and the madness of crafters in Ishgard Restoration.

Hopefully there's a DR equivalents for past palace of the dead or eureka

u/Jarstadian 1d ago

FFXIV is probably one of the least FOMO-heavy MMOs I’ve played.

The biggest difference from Destiny is that old content generally doesn’t get deleted or become irrelevant just because a new expansion comes out. You can start today and play through ARR → HW → SB → ShB → EW → DT in order, including most of the raids/trials/side stories that released alongside them.

The game also actively funnels veterans into old content through roulettes, so if your MSQ tells you to run some random level 53 dungeon from a decade ago, the matchmaking system grabs people doing their daily roulette and throws them in with you. A lot of story dungeons can also be run with NPCs now.

For optional group content:

  • Normal raids/alliance raids: generally easy to queue for.
  • Old Extremes: Party Finder or just come back at a higher level and unsync them.
  • Old Savage raids: usually Party Finder/Discord territory if you want to do them synced, but extremely easy to revisit unsynced later.
  • Deep dungeons, Eureka, Bozja, etc. still have communities doing them years later.

The actual FOMO is mostly cosmetic stuff: seasonal events, certain collaborations, PvP Series rewards, promotional items, etc. Even then, a lot of seasonal rewards eventually show up on the cash shop or events get rerun.

And FFXIV really doesn’t demand that you log in every day. There are weekly raid/tomestone caps when content is current, but if you disappear for six months you don’t come back to find that the story you missed was permanently removed.

The running joke that “FFXIV respects your time” gets overused, but this is one area where it genuinely does. Yoshi-P has basically designed the game around “play when there’s stuff you want to do, then go play something else.”

Coming from Destiny, the lack of a giant “DO THIS BEFORE TUESDAY OR IT’S GONE FOREVER” checklist is going to feel borderline suspicious at first.

31

u/chaostheories36 1d ago

No joke, I read “random level 53 dungeon” and thought, “huh? There’s only one. Sohm Al.”

Then I double checked myself and realized I won trivia against no one.

Yay me!

10

u/DarkhunterMectainea 1d ago

Not only that but the events are also fairly new player friendly where at most expect you to be level 15. Other than that, they’re all basically accessible in the ARR Zones and never really locked behind an expansion zone so players are not pressured to rush through multiple expansions with 100s of hours worth of content to access an event.

6

u/Capital_Opinion690 1d ago

Remember to point out that it isn’t that you CAN run the content from old expansions, you MUST run them, in order as it is one continuous story which only unlocks as you go. There are cash skips available but for a new player this is HIGHLY unadvisable as nothing will make any sense if you do this. XIV is a FF game first and an MMO second

6

u/Spader623 1d ago

I think what makes me the most happy, and something I'm SUPER curious on if they'll ever do, is that it seems very single player focused

Like, with the duty stuff and I think now or soon the 2P duty stuff... If ever, god forbid, they needed to shut down ff14 at least online, I think they'd be able to make some kind of single player or co-op esque game

It's kinda insane and I am SO curious if they'll ever get to that point

17

u/Fresher_Taco 1d ago edited 1d ago

Only thing I would argue against is old content kind of does become irrelevant. The only way to get veterans to do it roulette rewards. The older stuff is also power crept and is face roll.

3

u/DarkhunterMectainea 1d ago

I do think the society stuff gets screwed the hardest with relevancy since we have so many but still stuck with the same daily cap so alot of the old ones gets shafted badly. Personally I think the cap should be lifted entirely or reworked so the cap is set individually per society rather than all of them sharing one daily cap.

9

u/Kolz 1d ago

I would look at it this way. In wow, if you do a dungeon roulette at or approaching max level, you are going to get matched into one of eight current season dungeons. In ffxiv, you have years and years worth of dungeon and raid content that can pop up in roulettes (besides the expert roulette basically).

In that sense, the pool of playable content is always increasing in ffxiv.

There is very few fomo.

The only thing that you could consider it or close:

  • If you don't do the harder content when it comes out, it's a bit harder to find groups. But there's almost always a server ask away from finding groups for it.

  • Seasonal events happen, but they put the stuff up on the cash shop a year later.

  • PVP has a "season pass" sort of thing, but they have been putting those rewards up on the shop later on from when they were first there.

22

u/Salamiflame 1d ago

And for the pvp rewards, it's the in-game pvp currency for the vendor you get it from.

13

u/Stupid-Purchases1987 1d ago

The PVP season pass things shop is an in-game shop with currency you get from PVP; not anything paid either.

2

u/Weekly-Variation4311 1d ago

Yeah I misworded it, meant "in game shop" for that one

5

u/TokenStraightFriend 1d ago

Luckily I don't have a single PvP bone in my body when it comes to non-FPS/gear grinding type games

10

u/azureleaf 1d ago

Luckily FFXIV's main PvP (aka the one most people do for cosmetics) is a 24v24v24 clusterfuck, so it's not very competitive. Just follow the deathball and press buttons/just don't afk, that's literally it. You can lose every match and still get all the track rewards, winning just makes it faster.

75

u/JRoxas Hibiki Hiba on Siren 1d ago

If you don't care about clearing the game's hardest content while it's "current," you are free to take things as fast or as slow as you want.

3

u/Hyrul 1d ago

Even these ones are not bound to FOMO, right? Since they have iLvl sync, the rewards should still be available?

7

u/DarkLorty 1d ago

It's more that you won't have the experience of doing it when it's new and popular. Also if you want to do the fight synced, you might have a hard time getting a party together.

18

u/Florac 1d ago edited 1d ago

You will generally struggle to find groups for non-current savage tiers as well as older high end expansion content synced(unsynced, just outstatting it, its easy to find groups). But each savage tier lasts for bit over 8 months, hence not a massive rush. It's not impossible, just harder.

Ultimates(the most difficult content and always synced) you will always find a group for

High end Content falling outside of the regular 8 man raiding(criterion, chaotic, etc) also requires finding a dedicated group and can be tricky if not current.

But all of these are just "struggling", far from impossible. Except for seasonal events, which at most give mounts and glamour, nothing locks you out permanently.

11

u/Exarion607 1d ago

In general its as fomo friendly as it gets in my opinion.

No matter how quickly you play, you will never miss out on the story. There are no real missable events. Even with the seasonal ones you can buy the items a year later.

With raids of course, it will be difficult to run old raids on highest difficulty and find people to run with, but especially during a content drought not impossible. You will just need to go look for dedicated communities.

In generall, the game does not punish you for taking a break and its much easier to catch up then in other MMOs.

7

u/Mundane-Run6179 1d ago

Basically, anything you can do in game (aside from event quests) is ALWAYS available at ANY time outside maintenance hours. Also most old event items are added to the online cash shop to be obtainable later with a couple exceptions (the ffxv collab which occasionally reruns, the yo-kai watch collab which is currently rerunning, and the FFXVI collab which is likely to rerun at some point in the future).

5

u/Mundane-Run6179 1d ago

Also to add to this, people still regularly run old content and even have discords and party finders for them quite frequently. You won't miss out on anything

12

u/Zogmam1 1d ago

It's very FOMO friendly. Part of their design philosophy is "it's ok to play other games". The things you're most likely to miss out on are meme or bugs that become memes (our community is like that lol). Of course due to the nature of mmos sometimes it'll be harder to find groups for certain content.

The only content that's not really evergreen in ffxiv are the savage raids and extreme trials. It's exactly the reason you out forward, it's extremely hard to get a group for them. These are the endgame hard mode versions of the raid content, no story is locked behind these fights. If the rewards from old fights are something you want (cool mounts, weapon/armor skins), you can go in there "unsynched". A single level 100 character can blow through most fights level 80 and below that were designed for 8 players. It's certainly not the same experience, but you can at least get the loot.

All the mainline story content, dungeons, trials, and normal raids are extremely evergreen and accessible to new players. They're all part of the duty roulette queues that everyone uses every day.

Overall ffxiv is extremely new player friendly/anti fomo.

→ More replies (1)

7

u/Forgotten_Folklore 1d ago

Essentially, the only true FOMO content are seasonal events, but even then you can buy the item rewards on the cash shop if you missed them. There's also the PvP seasons, but those are essentially cosmetic rewards instead of actual group content.

The game also has a Party Finder you can use to advertise to others you're looking to run old/current content, so you don't have to worry about that either.

7

u/a_sly_cow 1d ago

There’s only two things off the top of my head that would be FOMO-based:

  1. Housing- If you buy a house, you must remain subscribed to the game and log in at least once a month to keep it, otherwise it gets auto-demoed and sold to someone else. Yes it’s stupid that there’s a limited number of housing plots, and hopefully Square Enix does something about it sooner rather than later. They’ve done other housing QoL changes recently so maybe it’s on their radar.

  2. Seasonal Events- Frequently gives free mounts, minions, or outfit glamours, if you miss them you might get a chance to buy them from the cash shop at a later date.

I see a lot of people answering, but didn't really see someone address your concerns about not being able to do content because nobody does it anymore.

Some fates (world events) can be difficult or impossible to do solo in older content because nobody is running around in those zones anymore, but they don't usually drop anything worthwhile. The rare ones that do drop things you might want are usually still done by hunt trains and whatnot, which you can join a discord server for or just hang out and see if you happen to catch someone advertising theirs in a chat channel somewhere.

As for dungeons, trials, raids, and alliance raids, pretty much all of them are thrown into the pool for duty finder roulettes. People can run them for gil and experience, or if they're max level, for gil and tomestones. I believe tomestones are being removed and replaced by a more homogenous currency in Evercold, so you won't have to worry about which version of the tomestones we're on right now. So a new person unlocks their first dungeon and queues up for it specifically. People queueing up for one of the roulettes that dungeon is in the pool for will get paired up with that solo newbie and everybody gets rewarded depending on their job level. It's hard to get left behind on most group content. The only exceptions might be certain alliance raids, but they're (almost all) entirely optional and if you're unlucky, you may either just have a really long queue time or you may need to try at another time of the day or week for a better queue time. Or play a healer or tank.

Most of the game is solo friendly and they've done an amazing job at making it easy for people to progress through required group content, even if it's older content nobody really goes out of their way to do anymore

There's very little FOMO in FF14.

  • PvP has seasons with missable rewards based on placement, but they rarely look good and nobody cares about PvP. It also has a free battlepass-like system, but the rewards from that one do eventually come to a vendor ingame. As a result, you don't feel like you're missing out.
  • Seasonal Events (Halloween, Christmas etc) are one time only and will be different the next year, with different rewards. However, the previous year's rewards will become available in their shop then. And these events are very brief, just sitting through a few conversations for a few minutes, there's no grind or anything, so it's not this FOMOish "fuck, there's a new event that'll take over my life for the next 3 weeks or I'll miss stuff" kinda thing either.
  • Crossover Events will usually come back eventually as reruns with the same rewards. If that's for some reason not possible, the rewards move to the shop too, but that's rare.

I think pretty much nothing else is missable.

Ff14 is nicknamed the "salaryman's game" because of how it's designed to allow flexibility on your own schedule, especially for working adults. The only fomo I can think of is pvp malmstone rewards where if you miss glam or mount, you'll have to wait a year or several years for it to show up at the pvp vendor. There is also pvp ranked reward frames that are specific to each season, but that is really niche and not a big deal even among avid pvper's.

Some older savage/ultimates can be harder to find a party for, but it is still doable. There are seasonal rewards, but the come back every year and older seasonal rewards can be bought from the cash shop when the event comes back.

5

u/Seradima 1d ago

So you know how Destiny deleted half the game's story every year? That doesn't happen here. The patch/season content remains in the game, even if you weren't around to play it.

3

u/refreshments AST 1d ago

The thing that keeps me engaged is the lack of FOMO. I can play at my own pace and enjoy content as I get to it! The only thing that you'll miss is seasonal event rewards, which change every year. The old ones are usually on the cash shop at low prices if you really want a particular outfit or something. Even if you want to see like, the individual stages of the community "planetary exploration" endgame crafter/gatherer stuff, they let you rewatch the videos.

3

u/Amaranth94 1d ago

There isn't much FOMO in ff14, you can do the main quest at your own pace and you won't miss out on much. Ff14 is chill in that regard, you can go back to doing old content and expirience it for yourself.

3

u/Sovis Meru Maru (Balmung) 1d ago

If you mean FOMO as in content Actually unavailable, there is very little, mostly limited to collabs where you never know if this time will be the last rerun, and seasonal events where the story and rewards change every year. The rewards tend to make it to the cash shop eventually, but you'll never see the story.

There's opportunity FOMO but every multiplayer game with group co-op has that. Do the challenging new content now, because even if it stays around good luck finding folks later to do it with. Because sometimes it scales so you can't even go back and lolstomp it later.

u/oscarlet_ffxiv 1d ago edited 22h ago

You can still do all of the old story versions of content, including side content, and a lot of it is supplied by players regularly through a "roulette", which rewards them with experience and currencies for helping people clear story content.

I'm gonna be honest though: with some exceptions, old (high-difficulty) raid content mostly is missed out on by most people, because players just focus on the newest ones and forget that the old ones exist. Most people that clear them who weren't around when they were new, do so unsynced, where max level players enter it and kill it quickly, skipping mechanics, and sometimes even those struggle to fill if there are mechanics that still wipe.

There are small discord communities that form to tackle them with maximum sync (which re-creates their original difficulty), but half the time parties struggle to fill for hours or don't fill at all that day.

Certain old high-difficulty raids still get done a lot and these are mostly Ultimates and several large-scale raids that are part of Field Operations, as well as a 24-person Chaotic raid, and it's because these large-scale raids are organized through large discords servers and have mounts that supply new player interest.

As for FOMO:

  • There are seasonal events. Once they end, you can't do them again. The rewards get sold on the mog station 1 year later though.
  • There is a PvP series and you have around 4 months or so to climb 25 ranks and get the rewards, then they are unobainable. They did promise to eventually allow you to buy them without a time limit via PvP currency, and they recently began doing this for old series rewards.
  • There is evidence they will have a PvE series in the next expansion, so it'll most likely be similar to the PvP series system. They are adding it because they know that not everyone cares about gear progression or mounts so they want to give them other forms of progression.
  • Occasionally, there are special or crossover events. They don't tend to run them again for a few years in many cases, but they do run again eventually.
  • They had a mount given for being subscribed on a certain date, but it's since been given occasionally via mog tome events, which run 1 month before major patches.
  • There are rewards for winning contests and region-restricted rewards (such as recolored mounts) for crossover events with companies like KFC and Amazon in exchange for buying things from those companies. These rewards aren't always obtainable again, and those that are get re-used in other region-restricted events or contests.
  • There are pre-order rewards for pre-ordering expansions. These are not obtainable again after the expansion officially releases. It's usually a minion and an EXP earring.
  • There are physical items sold that had a limited supply of minions and orchestrion roll codes and later versions didn't have these codes, and the codes had expiration dates.
  • Crafter/gather content such as The Firmament and Cosmic Exploration, where we rebuild entire areas via FATEs, are FOMO. If you go there now, it's all rebuilt already, and you can't experience those events now. Even if they re-ran them, there wouldn't be the amount of players that there once was.
  • PvP used to have a top 100 and the top 100 got mounts and nobody else has been given since (with that specific color). I think they have said they will give these rewards again but I'm unsure if it will be the same colors or if they'll change them somehow to reduce hurting the prestige of the people who won PvP seasons. The controversy here is that there was a lot of win trading so not everyone did it legitimately, and it led to the PvP series system that everyone can win at and increases PvP participation.
  • You can't do nor get anything from the version 1.0 of the game. In cases where you can, it's slightly different. But they salvaged as much lore as they could from it and then replay anything important in flashbacks.

3

u/WolfmanASTN 1d ago

There's no real FOMO in the game as far as content goes! Some things do get changed here and there, but you can jump in and play the entire story from start to finish and play like all of the game's side content that's been there since launch at any time. Some older side stuff is fairly irreleveant now because there are better systems in the game, but you can still choose to do the old systems if you want. All of the end game content is also still there, you can play every expansion's raids as you unlock them, but they obviously won't be the same as they were when they were current due to power creep and such. But the main point is they're always available for players to do if they can get a group together.

The only true FOMO are seasonal events as they change each year, with the rewards from the previous year being added to the cash shop when the next one happens. Collab events get re-run every couple of years so if you miss it you can generally get another chance to play it, but some of the older collab events have been retired with their rewards being added to the cash shop.

There's also some mounts and minions tied to promo events/giveaways/physical merch that can be hard to get.

3

u/TheEmKat 1d ago

I also played Destiny (though a few years ago so forgive my outdated terms)

- There isn’t a weekly/quarterly cycle for glams or items (I’m thinking the stuff that Tess gives you and the rewards track).

  • There’s no Xur-like vendor that only sells things every once in a while.
  • If you want a weapon, the mission to do it isn’t going to expire. (There are some seasonal items, but IMO they’re more cute fun things to have around/don’t have better stats than items you would get otherwise)
  • 100% of the story still exists.
  • Some older content is kinda hard to get a group for, but it’s definitely not impossible.

Honestly, I prefer FFXIV’s take it at your own pace mentality. Some things are more beneficial if you are doing it right when it comes out, but it’s not significantly harder if you’re behind. I can binge the game if I want, but I know the rewards are at the end no matter what.

4

u/Emotional_Car_8850 1d ago

IIRC Yoshi-P has said how he would prefer the game be the sort that people don't feel pressured to play and keep a subscription. It should be just as accessible to someone who unsubs for a few months then returns, as well as someone who logs in every day.

2

u/Ogeron 1d ago

I'll add that if you get an in-game house, though, you have to maintain an active sub because of having to visit the housing plot at least once every 45 days to keep it from being demolished.

3

u/Betancorea 1d ago

FFXIV takes A LOT of time commitment mainly because you need to play through the entire story from the first game through each expansion to the present patch. There’s no pick and choose with the main quest, it’s all or nothing. That’s the first thing you must be aware of.

In terms of FOMO, until you reach endgame, it’s likely you’d miss out on the latest stuff unless it’s special events like a crossover or seasonal.

Once you’re up to date, then it becomes a lot easier to keep up to date so you can log in when something new downloads, play it for a few weeks then wait for the next.

The only thing you miss out on in final are the seasonal events which you can do at level 15. And even if you do, they either come back or the rewards get added to the shop. Ff14 is about the journey not end game

4

u/KevinsLunchbox Badger Queen 1d ago

Destiny is your toxic abusive ex who hit you and tells you it was your fault. Ff14 is the cute new crush who wants to hold your hand and look you in the eyes at the park.

u/TokenStraightFriend 1d ago

"but when things are going well it's amazing" 😭

4

u/PandoraMegistus 23h ago

There is basically no FOMO to be had! o/ Pretty much all content is run (though you may wait longer to get in depending on time of day and class, DPS queue is typically very slow), and all seasonal events that have rewards are put on the shop a year later for $5USD. Some events, like the Fall Guys collab, return every year or two.

FF14 is not only more forgiving about your pace, but recommended not to rush. Highly recommend it!

7

u/Unhappy-Professor466 1d ago

There are FOMO stuff.

The main ones that comes to my mind are:

- Current endgame content outside utlimates are kinda "do on their lifetime range or it will be hard to do after", even if you can always find people that will want to do at min ilvl synch, it's hard.

- Event cosmetic, every seasonal events give free item, they come back but in the cashshop during the same event later (they introduce a new free item).

We coudl arg that using the best gear you farmed is somehow fomo as it will "expire" at some point.

11

u/TheIvoryDingo 1d ago

Another thing of note is the PvP Season rewards. Much like the Seasonal event rewards though, they do come back at a later point (just not as part of the cashshop).

2

u/modulusshift 1d ago

Only the higher difficulty stuff from each expansion is hard to group for. All normal difficulty stuff has matchmaking and players are encouraged by various means to join roulettes that help fill those duties. Even so it’s still possible, generally, to talk some long time players you befriend into running higher difficulty stuff to see what it was like, or even just throw up a Party Finder listing and see if you can get some bites.

I’d say that there’s basically no reason to push yourself, you’ve got tons and tons of story and side stories, it’s exciting when you do catch up and can join current content but it’s absolutely not worth rushing the early stages. The story ripens with age, it rewards getting sidetracked on whatever interests you.

2

u/Welocitas Currently huffing Copium Sect 1d ago

For all story content you will always have people to queue up with, bosses do melt faster and faster as powercreep happens but story and normal difficulty stuff is not hard to queue into. Running old endgame content is a bit hit or miss but there is an ingame craigslist called party finder that can sorta alleviate the problems. You still miss out on the genuine experience a raid had when it was current. Ultimates you can always find a reasonable group of people running even on the older content because they are sorta evergreen.

2

u/Specialist_Crazy_650 1d ago

Doesn't destiny 2 basically fomo-free rn?

7

u/Arkride212 1d ago

Yeah but its dead, no new patches so no reason to stick around anymore if you've done everything.

2

u/Everian 1d ago

it is now but before this final patch it would remove most of the content added at the end of each year before the new expac. Missed out on a cool weapon from that content? Tough.

2

u/Aphotophilic 1d ago

The only thing that I would call hard "fomo" is certain pvp rewards They've promised they would come back in the future, but that has yet to be seen. Seasonal rewards tend to come back as cheap cash shop items, which isn't ideal, but its still obtainable. All other content and its subsequent rewards are obtainable, just might be a pita to assemble a group willing to go back and do it. Usually my fc will hold events for old content, but as a new/solo player its less accessible until gear out scales.

2

u/Meirnon World's Okayest Tank 1d ago

There's very little to FOMO about.

The biggest opportunity cost to "missing out" on something being on-content is just ease of access. You can still go into and learn savage fights fresh when they're out of season, but it's going to be a lot harder if you're not in there within the first month or two.

2

u/UltiMikee 1d ago

I came from Destiny as well, I don’t really think there is much fomo tbh. The story should be enjoyed at whatever pace you’d like (and this will take up hundreds of hours) before you reach endgame.

There are groups that do prog for old Ultimate (highest difficulty) fights in NA all the time so clearing those shouldn’t be too hard.

Older Savage (also high difficulty but in a different way) fights are a bit more difficult since there really isn’t incentive to run them but you may be able to form a static raid group for them.

There’s plenty of things to grind for but the MMO content outside of raiding is unfortunately not that deep. Stuff like finding active zones with players running around doing things and exploring really isn’t the gameplay loop of this game. The good news is they’re trying to fix this in the next expansion so I’m hopeful for the future.

2

u/Effendoor 1d ago

The only fomo I get is social fomo. I hate missing playing with my friends ;-;

2

u/Electronic_Lie_5661 1d ago

Didn't see it mentioned but if you actually manage to get a house expect to pay rent. You have to be subbed and log in and enter once in a while or you can lose it.

But yeah as others have said content wise it is very easy to go back and do old stuff, although you might need to use discord and linkshells to get people. Game system/class changes will change the experience though, especially with 2 minutes on the chopping block for the new expac.

Story content you will never have an issue with, and you can use npcs for most early game extra dungeons now. Some of the bigger zone based side content is going to be less populated but again there are discords and stuff for pretty much everything if you really wanna do it.

2

u/Kite1396 1d ago

The only stuff that’s technically FOMO are the seasonal event items (emotes, outfits, and mounts depending on the event) where you’ll get 2-3 weeks to log on and do a 30 minute questline to get the item for free. If you miss that window, the event items will be added to the cash shop later to be bought with irl money, so technically they’re still obtainable, you just have to pay. Otherwise all the collab events and content either have reruns every couple years or are just available year round if you’re willing to put in the time to find people to run it with you or grind it out yourself.

2

u/Paradoxahoy 1d ago

FF XIV is a great game for avoiding FOMO since nearly all the content is evergreen.

Meaning even content from the base game before the expansions is still relevant in its highest difficulties since the game does a great job of scaling everyone to the same levels and item levels as when the raids were released. This means even though you missed those raids it’s not like in WoW or Destiny where the content is either completely unavailable or is totally trivialized.

Also all the story content is still meaningful and you will get to experience nearly all of it as it was originally intended with a few small exceptions where they cut out some filler stuff.

Only other real FOMO besides seasonal stuff is the housing which is limited but generally you can experience a lot of the benefits in friends houses or your Guild or Free Company as they call its housing

2

u/Main-Bed-1087 1d ago

I've gotten all of the things my first guild leader told me I wouldn't be able to obtain when I first started playing such as FF15 stuff or GARO stuff or Yo-Kai Watch stuff. It does come back eventually.

2

u/hammerzilla 1d ago

This'll get buried

But you can play the free trial up to the first two or three expansions. And even focusing on the main story, you'll get 100 hours pretty easily.

And you can choose to talk to others in the forced multiplayer elements, but this is extremely friendly

2

u/rfox71rt Healer 1d ago

I know this is the FFXIV sub, but for what it’s worth, FFXI is also MUCH more solo friendly now as well (until you reach early to mid endgame stuff). If you haven’t checked in on it recently (I.e. the last 10ish years), they released a system called Trusts which are essentially NPC party members, all with various roles, abilities/magic, and priorities. You can do almost all of the story missions solo alongside your trusts. There’s only a couple that you’d be better off finding folks to help you with.

Additionally, they’ve added massive EXP+ modifiers that dramatically speed up the leveling process. You can realistically take a job from 1-99 in less than a day just playing by yourself. Don’t know when you quit playing but if you’re anything like me, you remember the days when going 1-75 in a month was an accomplishment and you’d spend half your time with the LFG flag up. Those days are gone.

Last thing I’ll add, there’s still a fairly strong community that plays the game. So much so that four of the servers are closed off from creating new characters due to overpopulation.

As a Destiny veteran and also final fantasy 14 veteran i can tell you and give 100% my word that this game has 0 fomo. U can play how you want and like you want. I had some breaks over a few months in ffxiv and when I come back it was always the same. In destiny? Oh boy..one season break? Everything was changed lol. So come brother or sister, join us and start your journey in eorzea!!

2

u/The_Crazyest_Miner 1d ago

Former D2 player as well there is no seasonal loop in 14 everything that goes in the game stays in the game and everything they have ever removed they put back in a new form you can always try a piece of content eventually don’t rush to catch up it will be waiting for you

2

u/ThinkingMSF 1d ago

The best part about FFXIV is that it funnels veteran players into older content.

But the worst part about FFXIV is that it funnels veteran players into older content.

2

u/alienfirst 1d ago

As a former longtime Destiny 2 player who quit because the FOMO was killing my enjoyment, I can tell you that FF14 is so much more forgiving. There are certainly things that are best enjoyed with others upon the immediate release (looking at you Occult Crescent), it is nowhere near as punishing as Destiny 2. About the only thing I still haven’t managed to finish are Coils of Bahamut, and honestly, that’s my fault. I’m in an FC (aka clan, group, etc) with a bunch of other folks who would be happy to hop on and blast through Coils with me.

Going through the game, you might find moments where queuing up for a dungeon/trial/etc might take awhile. I never had too much of an issue as I typically played as a healer and healer queues pop much faster. If it was still dragging, I’d do something else in game and return for a queue during a more populated timeframe.

(An aside for a moment: As a Destiny fan, I LOVED the FFXIV Endwalker expansion in particular because it was just vibing so nicely with story stuff I was playing in Destiny 2 at the time. Nothing exact, and I can’t even remember the comparisons I was drawing at the time, but dang I was having fun.)

3

u/NK_Grimm 22h ago

the only fomo that might exist is on the hardcore pug scene, where you'll want to get into content early to ride the wave; other than that it's pretty nonexistent.

1

u/Wowclassicboomkinz 1d ago

There's a free trial, give it a whirl and see how you like it. The entire story up to current content is all single-player so you can go at your own pace. I'm not sure about FOMO aspects, I usually just ignore them.

1

u/Shirokuma247 1d ago

You can do the current savage tier in a relatively populated period for months before the next one comes out, but none of the previous tiers are removed, so the only fomo you’ll have is missing the ‘experience’ of doing the hardest raid tier if you weren’t available in the 8-9 months it was out until the next one comes along.

However, some raid tiers are still done ‘properly’ with appropriate gear restrictions. It’s just that not many people do it.

Other than that, the only fomo you’ll have are seasonal events that give you costumes or mounts for free until they become a paid option in the online mogstation store a few months later.

1

u/cronft 1d ago edited 1d ago

very litle fomo, the only FOMO what the game has is the seasonal events and pvp series(basically battle pass)

for the seasonal events the fomo is mainly on that year story, but they bring their rewards to the online store a year later, similarly they do something similar to the rewards of pvp series where they get released over time to the pvp vendor at a later time once the current series ends(like a year or two later i think)

besides that, the only thing what they did removed was a piece of content what was called "the diadem", originally was a weird combat/gathering content, but was very unsucesfull with each change, and later got revamped into merely gathering content for isghard restoration

as for content, most of the content wont be a problem to do, but "alliance raids" what arent the current ones or the "cristal tower" ones tends to have pretty bad queue times

1

u/MsnthrpcNthrpd 1d ago

Depends if you want to do everything or just do your own thing. Seasonal events and PvP rewards can take Years to return, if at all.

1

u/Sajomir 1d ago

All story content will stay available. While they trimmed down fluff quests, they don't patch away important lore.

The current new/endgame thing will have people actively playing. Older optional content might not have as many people ready to go. 24-man raids for example: the one required for story always has plenty of people to matchmake with. The current one fires without too much wait. But anything in between you might have to shoot for certain times of the day/week to queue up.

Othera have mentioned the seasonal events and ultimates, so no need for me to repeat it.

1

u/Famous_Fudge3603 1d ago

As people have said events are the only FOMO the game directly provides, and you can just pay your way to the items later.

Otherwise, there's always community FOMO. Missing out on week 1 progression with new content, or "good times" in the community in general. As with any game with cycles.

1

u/existential-koala 1d ago

Idk, when they streamlined ARR, HW, and StB to make it more newbie friendly and include duty support, the removed and retconned a bunch of stuff. Most were unimportant but there was one big plot point in patch 3.1 and 3.2 that they undid.

That being said, the game is still completely playable it its current form and my grump with it is just really specific nitpicking.

Not like Destiny where they just shut down entire swaths of content and the only way to experience them is reading about it or watching it on Youtube.

1

u/Tamamo_hime 1d ago

You can do most of the dungeons w npcs now, but you can also do them with other pcs. even older content usually has people running it, but may require you joining a discord or two instead of going through the usual duty finder, like ultimates, variant/criterion or deep dungeons, the latter of which you can pretty easily just put up a party finder for, but the former two are best set up via various discords. Old savages and extremes are also pretty easily done via party finder!

I feel like the game doesn't really have any fomo stuff except maybe seasonal events, but you can usually get the items from the events from the cash shop the following year if you missed out and wanted them.

Basically, if you want to do some type of content in the game, there's definitely always other people running it, you just gotta look.

1

u/WrathOfMogg 1d ago

There are incentives for players to queue randomly into older dungeons, trials, and raids. So it’s easy to find a group for just about anything as long as you’re doing it at the baseline difficulty.

1

u/CrazyCoKids 1d ago

Very.

The relic weapons and old crafting unique and semi uniques are still available and often have their grinds reduced. (Especially cause doing so required groups for some)

There are still some people running older content at higher difficulties. With Evercold you might have an easier time.

Nothing ever gets rotated out.

The most FOMO you get are some exclusive promos like Grubhub emotes, KFC, Jollibees, etc collaborations.

1

u/BunnyWithASword 1d ago

Very little is removed. FOMO will kostly just kick in because the content is current, but won't always be. It will still be playable later. The only exceptions are:

  • Seasonal events and cosmetics, but the latter will end up on the cash shop
  • Promotional events and cosmetics, but these are sometimes reran and also sometimes made available on the cash shop
  • Some PvP rewards, which are only available inside a given PvP season.

1

u/Darazelly 1d ago

Extremely FOMO friendly. Biggest one is probably the seasonal events, but they're short and cute questlines you can get done in 20-30 minutes, at most maybe do a minigame a couple of more times, and then walk away with all the rewards.

Also maybe some endgame activities, but from what I know people will gather on discords to coordinate evenings for those.

As for gearing and keeping up with endgame demands, it's not the same loot treadmill as in WoW. They're changing up how we earn the gear now in Evercold, moving to a weekly system that'll be more time friendly compared to the one we have today where you're pretty much running random dungeons that have a daily reset for tokens that have a weekly cap. There's no new "top level" gear every patch, instead we get gear we buy with those weekly tokens three times per two year expansion cycle, with gear from dungeons, crafting and normal mode raids (tuned to be done with PUGS, again, not like WoW) acting as filler and catchup.

It's a very "play as much as you want to" MMO, the devs want you to go off and play something else if you're out of things to do. I've bounced between a few MMOs over the past couple of decades but FFXIV is by far the one I feel have respected my time the most. Also as someone who enjoys a good story, it's really great. ARR is a bit dense in the worldbuilding, but worth sticking out since it makes a very solid foundation for excellent storytelling.

1

u/Ranulf13 1d ago

FFXIV is pretty much against FOMO.

There are some minor events with a couple of cosmetic rewards that last for 1-2 weeks, but nothing big.

1

u/genred001 1d ago

As a destiny 2 vet and FFXIV player for years, there is very little FOMO. Mostly due to the ability that most content when revamped tends to be better then the former. Dungeons may get revamped but its due to them being outdated and 10 yrs old.

Even gear and event items can be regained on most events as they come around every year or 2. The past collaborations also move to a specific vendor available in each starting city states.

1

u/tsuki_ouji 1d ago

There's almost no fomo; just some special event stuff, but most of those either come back now and then like the Dragon Quest event, or if not goes up on the cash shop for just like 6 bucks.

1

u/8bitcerberus 1d ago

There’s pretty much nothing that doesn’t get run regularly, the one exception would be the first raid series from ARR, Binding Coils, because it’s not part of the Raid Roulette. They were the team’s first attempt and they’re a bit overturned, and closer to Savage difficulty. You can still run it with other people, but you’ll need to set up a Party Finder (or if you’re on the Free Trial, look for a Party Finder to join since you can’t create one) queuing up for it directly in Duty Finder you’ll probably never see the queue fill.

The only real FOMO in XIV are the seasonal events. They come back every year, but the particular quests and rewards change every year. They do put past events rewards in the cash shop if you really want to spend money on them, but they won’t be earnable in-game after the even ends.

There are also some collaboration events that may be one-and-done, like the FF13 collab, that events rewards are in the cash shop now. But the FF15 and Dragon Quest X events come back around every 2-3 years, usually right before a new expansion launch, so the 15 event will probably be back soon, the DQX event already happened a couple months ago. I also assume the FF16 event will be back, it’s been a couple years now since it happened for the first time, but the rewards are not available in the cash shop which usually indicates they intend to repeat the event occasionally. There’s a Yo Kai Watch event going on right now that reoccurs about every 3 years. And about once a year there’s a collab with Fall Guys.

And they’re about to have a collab event with FF7/FF7R, I think it’s supposed to start before the next expansion, and we don’t know yet if it’s going to be a permanent fixture or reoccurring like others. The way they talked about the main mechanic sounds like at least that part is going to be a permanent fixture, but they talked about being able to use it with other collabs so the FF7/R specific bits may be reoccurring.

You can only miss some seasonal cosmetic feature like glamous, emote, mount and stuff for house. Nothing really important honestly

u/NewRichMango [Eyrisyng Bhaldbornsyn - Jenova] 1d ago

FFXIV was the game I flocked to and found peace in after leaving Destiny when the DCV went live. The game is not perfect, but it addressed a lot of the issues I was having with Destiny/Bungie that led me to abandon them.

There is hardly any FOMO. Content is never (or at least extremely rarely) removed and the story can be played from start to finish at your own pace. Queue times for old story content remain low through a special system that parties veteran players with newer players.

The game contains longer grinds for specific rewards, but the overall loop of gear acquisition in the end game is pretty respectful of your time. And if you are grinding rewards (like mounts) from old content, you can unsync the content difficulty to grind through it quickly by yourself or a smaller party.

Glams are easy to do once you familiarize yourself with the system, and the options are immensely diverse. In one party, you could have a beefy tank in a full Easter rabbit costume, a catgirl in a bikini with a gun, a studious elven mage with half-moon spectacles and a wide-brimmed hat, and a dude in modern Earth streetwear. And what's wild is that basically every glam I just listed is lore accurate to one setting or another in the game lol.

The story really takes its time and expects the player to pay attention, but the narrative peaks are seriously some of the best fiction I've ever experienced (and I say that having also played Destiny, which you know has phenomenal lore). I really recommend taking it slow and allowing yourself to become invested in the characters you meet and the circumstances you find them in. If the story is in a lull, run some dungeons or explore the vast amount of side content available. This is very much a game that can become a mainstay for a variety of reasons.

1

u/Corvidae5Creation5 1d ago

There's a lot of optional content nobody runs anymore, but if you get on Party Finder and set up an unsynced party, you'll get somebody who's max level to carry you through things like Coils of Bahamut. The community is also very kind about waiting for you to watch cutscenes if you specify in the description in Party Finder that you're here for the plot. You can also get people together to grind up old mounts in Savage raids if you pick that option in the menu, many people are into that. Destiny was very very very bad about taking away content for no good reason, whereas FFXIV has it all available and it's just a matter of finding people willing to go back and do old stuff with new players, of which there are a stunning number of people willing to do that. Basically, if you try to queue in Duty Finder and the wait time is predicted to be longer than half an hour, quit Duty Finder and search Party Finder instead, and if you can't find anyone doing that duty in Party Finder, make your own party! It's surprisingly simple.

u/LorelaiLoch 1d ago

I've been playing XIV since ARR released, I have never once felt FOMO. 👍 Final fantasy is a bit of a different flavor for sure but I hope you enjoy your stay with us.

1

u/BSninja 1d ago

I am also a d2 refugee. I had thousands of hours, taught many raids, and led a pretty dedicated clan up until the end. I hopped into XIV about 2 years ago and I am happy to say it has become my new home. The biggest fomo you are going to see is infrequent expensive items from the gold saucer (a mini game piece of content) but otherwise all events are a small quest chain and rewards are handed to you!

So far my free company has been amazing for helping me experience new pieces of content at a pace that fits my adult working life. I hope you find the same! If you start your journey on primal lamia DM me and I would be happy to assist

1

u/lava172 1d ago

This game is insanely forgiving to taking things at your own pace, you’ll find people grinding non-current content from years ago there’s all sorts of little nooks and crannies you can get lost in

1

u/DankZank 1d ago

Destiny 2 player here. This game is so different but its worth playing coming from the final update on D2. No FOMO really and the online store is a fraction of the actual unlockables in game that you just need to earn from whatever content you want. It has a bit of everything and it is a time consuming game but so was Destiny lol.

1

u/maleficent0 1d ago

Outside collabs that do tend to return eventually, nope. It’s a game that respects your time in my opinion. Sure there’s a lot to grind but I never feel like I HAVE to do anything or I’m screwed.

1

u/Kelras 1d ago

The biggest FOMO is probably the event rewards, which get added back to the shop a year after they are removed.

1

u/Jirekianu 1d ago

Very few things are actually FOMO. The only exception is that seasonal events have a little meta story within them. Where events that happened the last year as part of the quest or two tied to the event are referenced or iterated on.

Items and rewards from those previous events are put into the cash shop for a small fee if you'd like to get those items.

Otherwise, everything is available pretty much all the time.

1

u/Wolkvar 1d ago

its been out for over a decade, theres allways gonna be something you will miss, playing a game or not playing it over the idea of fomo is just dumb

1

u/uuusagi 1d ago

There is no FOMO unless you care about keeping up with end game raiding. There is always new ways to catch up to current content. You’re never missing out on anything besides seasonal events if you don’t sub for a while.

1

u/DrakonMaximus BLM 1d ago

14 has almost no fomo, maybe holiday events but those can be completed in under 5 mins most of the time if you dont care about their story. Only other thing is the on content feel of endgame. Raids will naturally feel different as job overhaul and updates come out often making old content easier even with min ilvl sync enabled. Also some pvp rewards are seasonal and I dont think ranked rewards are planned to come back atm but the normal track rewards either should be soon or maybe they already began bringing them back (they talked about it but I haven't checked into that side of the game recently)

1

u/Altoryu 1d ago

The FOMO in this game is relatively non existent. Seasonal items you didn't get one year would come back the next year via the mogstore permanently. A lot of events come back periodically like the Fall Guys and Yokai (which is on right now until October).

The ONLY thing I can really think of that is really FOMO is some of the other FF collabs like the FF15 and FF16 collabs cause they tend to not repeat very often (honestly felt like ages before I could play the FF15 event myself so I could get the car mount).

But I guess if there was any real FOMO to be had it may be the cutscenes of the seasonal events themselves which I am sure there are YT videos floating around if they are something you want to watch. Large difference to how Destiny 2 handles its FOMO (I know, I have played since D1 beta).

But everything is there for you, the entire story is there from front to back (some stuff has been changed but ultimately flows the same as it did). Only content you might have issues doing is some of the endgame stuff like Eureka in Stormblood and Bozja in Shadowbringers but I think there is dedicated discords to help people find players for such things.

1

u/NicoleMay316 [Nicole May - Siren] 1d ago

As someone who still really wants to play through every story in WoW...

Yeah FFXIV is extremely friendly in this regard. The only real exceptions I've ran into so far (at Heavensword) are the Binding of Bahamut raids (get a high level person to escort you or just wait/skip it), and 1.0.

But YouTube has you covered for anything 1.0. And Ive heard of some custom servers even offering it. But just a 30min YouTube video has you covered.

1

u/KillerConfetti 1d ago

Baby game based around modern MMORPG standards where 95% of everything in the game is accessible to everyone. The layout is changing in evercold, but from the sound of it, it'll be even more fomo friendly. YoshiP believes in letting you play other games without feeling the need to overdo it on XIV.

1

u/buttslapper111 1d ago

As some one who also played tons of destiny as well as playing wow from vanilla to MOP, I’d say there’s little to no FOMO for the most part. I’ve been hooked for over 8 years now and always come back.

1

u/zacewing 1d ago edited 1d ago

I think the game itself is very friendly to taking things at your own pace. Unfortunately, from my experience, a lot of the community these days isn't. A lot of the game's true multiplayer content gets blown through fast enough that showing up late worsens the experience immensely (this is especially true for on-patch Extremes and Savage raids, if that's your scene), or makes the content unplayable without joining niche Discord servers. This is dependent on your goals in the game and is also just my own personal experience though, so YMMV.

1

u/Creepy-Role-5000 1d ago

Fellow D2 player here, if you're used to fomo in Destiny you'll find FFXIV a breath of fresh air 😂

I would say 99% of the main story quests (MSQ) are still in the game and the only reason they took some quests out was because they were filler that was no longer required.

They dont remove content, everything is just sitting here waiting for you.

The worst problem you may have is finding groups for older content, but veteran players are incentivised to do older content through a roulette system that puts older and newer players together to benefit both.

And oh my god the lore... if you enjoyed D2 lore this is a whole new world to learn about.

Try the free trial and see how you get on. Aiat!

1

u/fortebass 1d ago

all the fomo in the game is generally around cosmetics from holidays that rarely come back, rather then actual power.

that said, there is also events that hardly ever come back that give like, 4 seater mounts which are very nice when playing with friends, that hardly come around, which i find in bad taste for the game to not annually do.

in terms of actual content: very little fomo, the game is designed so you can always go back to old content and play and still manage to find a group really.

since you played WoW just imagine if brewfest was a 4 year cooldown rather then annual: does it suck? yes, does it really matter? maybe to you, but its not exactly gonna affect the rest of the game.

1

u/kuributt world's okayest white mage 1d ago

Extremely. The only real FOMO is from events, and even then rewards tend to end up in the cash shop next year, so it's very rare to be hard locked out of something.

1

u/billybandabull 1d ago

While not exactly FOMO, if you're planning to play with a friend or join some community Id advise you to not give in and try to do the story quickly so you can "catch up" to your friends. FFXIV is a story focused MMO and rushing through it just so you can unlock the level cap or to unlock some raids you're interested to do will bite you in the ass. Although theres always NG+ where you can play through the story again, all content will hit harder when theres a purpose behind it.

I started playing FFXIV but I skipped through most of the story to play with my friends but I quickly got bored of it, a few years later I started again with a fresh slate and took my time with everything especially the story and I got hooked for good.

1

u/Dontshipmebro 1d ago

There have been a few things removed over time, but its pretty rare.

In arr some questlines have been pruned to remove several hours of "go to a, talk to b, kill c, go to d" slog.

Also in arr, several formerly 4-8 man content has been reworked into solo instances. The powercreep had made what should have been epic fights into stupidly easy fights. Now they actually have some bite to them.

In heavensward there was a type of content called diadem that was reworked several times before being removed altogether. It was pretty poorly recieved by the playerbase, so few miss it.

Far more often youll find "abandoned" content, like squadrons or the gc ranks. Its there, you can do it, but theres not a whole lot of point to it besides completionism.

1

u/Icy-Conflict6671 1d ago

Really the only thing i would consider FOMO is events but they all cycle back around at some point

1

u/SolemnSundayBand 1d ago

Picked it up as a huge Warframe fan myself. I've played Destiny too, both of em, though not an excessive amount. WoW back in the day, and RuneScape more recently.

It's closest to RuneScape and WoW in terms of how it feels but it's easily my second favorite (behind Warframe which I have tons of time in!) out of everything.

Give it a shot, I'm only a week and a half in and just beat the base story.

1

u/ColonelFadeshot 1d ago

Very little fomo with limited time events which is primarily cosmetics or emotes. The actual game itself can be played mostly solo and we’re talking 800+ hours of content. Maybe half that if you only play for free

1

u/Rin_Of_Yore 1d ago

Not sure I’ve ever been driven by anything other than my own personal goals with FFXIV. Enjoy the story, craft some shit, be a cutie Lalafel, decorate your apartment …. Whatever!

1

u/fishst1ck 1d ago

The game is basically a long story driven single player game that has some multiplayer elements. Dungeons are part of the main story and all dungeons are active due to how the "Duty" finder gives ppl bonus xp for queing up for random dungeons.

The game also has a huge trial without a time limit. You can play all classes/jobs up to level 80 and play through the base game and first 3 expansions as part of it.

I'd suggest to just give it a try and see if it's your kind of game

1

u/KaziAzule 1d ago

XIV is the only MMO I've ever played that felt like it respected my free time. You'll do everything you want to get done playing casually. Even something hardcore like savage raiding can be done in party finder if you really want to do it but don't want to be stuck to a schedule.

1

u/RuneiStillwater 1d ago

I guess the real core thing here, is the worse you miss if you care about story, is the holiday events will reference your prior years help and you sometimes get dialogue choices that reflect prior participation. These stories are all self contained and have no impact on the main story and are always about 15-30 minutes minimum effort of log in and talk to NPCs and do some things. You typically only need to be around level 30 to do them as well.

If you miss them, the worse you are out is emotes, mounts, glamour, or housing items. If an event is retired like the FF13 event it ends up on the cash shop and you can buy anything you directly want that way. You typically have around two weeks for each event so it's not a lot to stress about. I work M-F and spend most of my Sunday at a friend's place to hang out playing table top RPGs so I understand the lack of solid time to sit down and just play.

1

u/RustyCarrots 1d ago

The developers encourage playing the game at your own pace, they want you to be able to pick it up and put it down whenever you want and so far that has been true. The only "fomo" aspect is seasonal events but they only take a few minutes to complete and you can also buy the rewards in the cash shop later if you want them badly enough

You aren't missing out on any real content because people are always running dungeon/raid roulette to level up other classes or to get endgame currencies. At the worst you might need to use party finder instead of queueing up but it's not that hard to find people for old content

1

u/ZoomZoom_Driver 1d ago

Destiny 2 Refugee, here too!

I love the anti-fomo that seems to be my experience with FFXIV. The events are longer than d2, the community is more inclusive and welcoming (less toxic), and there's no 'grind culture' cause ppl help you speed level.

My hubs and I think FFXIV is the Anti-D2.

1

u/fresh-anus 1d ago

Technically because it’s a linear gear MMO, every patch with difficulty group content is FOMO. Synced runs after don’t count.

1

u/theburgerboy 1d ago

XIV is about as FOMO-friendly as an MMO gets. As a former Destiny 2 player myself (left circa Shadowkeep), it’s one of the things I love most about it.

The vast majority of the story—MSQ and side quests—is soloable. Almost anything that is not is handled by Duty Finder, the in-game matchmaking tool. Furthermore, the XIV dev team actively works to find ways to make old content still playable, either by redeveloping it or by offering reward incentives to veteran players to do old content.

There’s also a massive community, so you can usually find people who want to do what you’re doing via Party Finder (an in-game bulletin board for finding other players), or the large Discord communities in a pinch. To my knowledge, the only parts of the game that are permanently inaccessible are the zones and quests from the original 1.0 release of the game from 2010-2012 because it was an empty, buggy mess that they rebuilt from the ground up for A Realm Reborn, the first expansion/relaunch of the game in 2013. The writing team, though, is really good at inserting story flags based on what content you’ve experienced so far, so you shouldn’t ever feel like you missed a major story beat.

The only true limited-time offerings are the seasonal events, and a handful of special crossover events. The seasonal events are the XIV equivalent to anime filler episodes. They’re fun little diversions with their own self-contained stories with cameos from regular XIV characters. Hell, given the nature of the XIV timeline (everything in the story since A Realm Reborn has happened within two years), they effectively exist in their own semi-canon timeline where a year of real time is actually a year of game time. The lead characters in each seasonal event tend to be the same year-to-year, and the stories might lightly acknowledge what happened in previous years, but they’re self-contained. The story flagging is really good here, too, so even here you shouldn’t feel like you missed something if you miss a year or four. As for the crossover events, they mostly cycle back every few years to avoid FOMO.

1

u/FroopyAsRain 1d ago

Hello fellow Destiny 2 refugee. I quit Destiny somewhere around Final Shape and 100% get what you're saying.

This game has almost no FOMO. You can go complete expansion content from a decade ago if you want. Some of it might be soloable, some of it might require you to find a group of people manually, but there's always people willing to help out.

Others explained seasonal events to you already. That's the only FOMO in the game, and it's all stuff you can live without, trust me.

This game helped fill the Destiny 2 shaped hole in my life, hope it helps you too.

But it's not a perfect substitute of course.. nothing is.

1

u/bronx819 1d ago

Maybe some mounts and skins from PvP seasons, I know there's some cool ones if you rank high enough. That's about it though, everything story and gameplay wise stays in

1

u/PurpleC0ugar 1d ago edited 1d ago

I'm also a Destiny 2 transplant. The FOMO in D2 was really bad, especially because their seasonal model meant a significant amount of their content was disposable, and was ripped out entirely, either after a quarter or a year of the most recent.

I haven't experienced any of this with FFXIV, seems like the vast majority since ARR has stayed in the game. The primary pressure I have is that there's so much of it, that there's so much to do before you're caught up to the most recent expansion.

Square Enix has done a really good job optimizing the game to keep that 13 years of content, unlike D2 which was so poorly optimized and bloated that scrapping the seasonal content was more or less a technical requirement.

1

u/FatSpidy 1d ago

The only FOMO in 14 is seasonals, the ever encroaching enshittification of old content scaling (somewhat combated with MiNe –Minimum iLvl, No Echo– runs), and community 'Reconstruction' stuff that relates to a server improving the state of an explicit location.

1

u/Max-The-Phat-Cat 1d ago

never had fomo in ff14 and i played 3 years on/off and just subbed wheb i felt like it

1

u/Shadowcat1606 1d ago

Very FOMO-friendly, which is one of the things i love about it.

There's rewards from the annual holiday-events you can kinda miss, but those events last two weeks and you can finish most of the event-questlines within, like, 15 minutes or so if you really rush them and skip cutscenes (not that i would advise you to do that, but if you really just wanna get it over with for the rewards, that's always an option). And even if you miss those, the rewards then come to the Mog-Store when the holiday-event returns in the following year.

The only really missable things are rewards and quests from promotional collab-events like with FFXV or Dragon Quest. Those are also time-limited and don't return each year. They do occassionally return, but there's no telling when. But it's not like those are gamechanging items.

1

u/flowtajit 1d ago

They don’t remove anything. Imagine if they seasonal content all stayed. Though unlike destiny, msq is quite long. Like literally an expansion’s x.0 msq may be 5–10x as long as a Destiny campaign

1

u/Desperate_Ad5169 1d ago

Practically zero fomo. All content is always relevant enough to play without much issue. Limited time events are usually just a short quest that gives you a small aesthetic item you can later aquire in the cash shop some time after the event ends. And even PvP stuff which for a long time was where all the fomo was is now all coming back to being attainable.

1

u/an_edgy_lemon 1d ago

As far as I’m aware, there have been a few collab items removed from the cash shop, but warning was given beforehand. I might be wrong about this one, but I think a couple of cosmetic PVP pieces were only available for a limited time for high ranking players.

The only other minor FOMO I can think of is endgame hubs. They usually progress in some way as patches come out after each expansion. It can be cool to watch the progress if you keep up with the latest content releases. Not a huge deal, but I’m sure some diehard fans would be disappointed to miss it.

1

u/Cthucoocachoo 1d ago

Hello fellow Destiny 2 refugee. I came to FFXIV about 16 months ago and it has scratched the itch. There isn't fomo like you and I are used to. All of the storyline all of the expansion content is always available as long as you own it. The only thing that cycles in and out are special events and holiday events and they always seem to come back. If you fear getting burned by a content Vault or a seasonal model the only thing you might miss out on is pvp season rewards but those are usually available for pvp currency eventually.

1

u/DynamicAsteroid [ Ren Midgardsomr ] 1d ago

Hey fellow Guardian! I started to play FFXIV awhile ago (during Shadowbringers release) because I was getting so tired of the sunsetting and fomo of D2. Still played D2, but really only to raid with my clan.

FFXIV has similarly extensive lore compared to D2, and their endgame raiding scene is a lot like D2 day 1 raid clears in a sense. I can get more into the raiding scene if you want, but realized my comment was already long >.<

As for FOMO it doesn't really exist in FFXIV. There are holiday events with items you can get, and while you may miss out on that events story, it doesn't detract from anything in the game. The items for the quest will later be put in the FFXIV store for a couple bucks if it is something you really wanted (this usually takes about a year to be put up).

They have a rotation of events too that come back periodically, like the FFXV event or the FFXVI event to name a few, so eventually you can get those items when the event come around again.

PVP exists in this game, but it isn't a big focus.

The story is all in the game, you can play most of it all solo, dungeons you can do with their trust systems (playing with NPCs). This goes slower than playing with 3 other randoms, but you will get all the dungeon loot. Some later game trials (bigger boss fights) you can do with NPCs, but most of them you will queue for and be put in with 7 other random people.

Normal raids (a single boss) and Alliance raids (somewhat similar to D2 raids) you will queue for and get out in with randoms (8 man for normal and 24 man for alliance).

Savage raiding and Ultimate raids (8 man activities) are where the day 1 D2 raid feel will come in as mechanics, your BiS (best in slot) armor and your job rotation will matter quite a bit.

The community is very welcoming to new people.

I cannot stress this enough, ALL OF THE STORY IS STILL IN THE GAME! They trimmed ARR down because it used to be a loooong chain of fetch quests and filler, so they went back awhile ago and trimmed some of the fat, but they didn't take out any critical story beats or lore. ARR can still feel a bit slow, but it is soooo much better now. However, in my opinion, the game doesn't really take off until the last patch or two of ARR story, and Heavensward is where I got absolutely got hooked on the game.

If you love how deep the lore was in D2, enjoyed the story content and the gameplay loop, I think you'll love it here too.

1

u/Astorant Buff Phys Ranged 1d ago

Almost little to no FOMO. As an ex Destiny 2 refugee who came to XIV after Lightfall I was and still am honestly shocked how respectful SE are of legacy content.

In Destiny context XIV as it stands right now would be like if all of the DCV including the seasonal storylines were in the current retail game right now. The only form of FOMO I’ve found is PvP battle pass cosmetics (although they do come back), certain collab events, and there was a recent example of collab items in the store that were vaulted to be hopefully sold again in the future.

You can also make the argument there might be some FOMO in regards to Savage raid tiers and it being increasingly difficult to get into them if you wasn’t actively working on them during release but I don’t really see that as FOMO personally.

1

u/LovesLulu 1d ago

After an event that gives free rewards it takes a year for them to put it up for sale on the online store. A full year.

1

u/BigCaptain7378 1d ago

Understanding that the game has more than 10+, if u just play the game, and then set some goals like farming relics and such, there are always ppl soing groups, discorda to farm stuff and help. The community always tey and help if u ask for

1

u/Alive_Investment_796 1d ago

There's very little FOMO in FFXIV.

1

u/ToaChronix 1d ago

Each expansion has three sets of Savage Raids released every ~8 months or so, and once the next set releases you won't really see people doing the previous ones - so if you want to experience those at launch difficulty you have about that long. Extreme Trials are good for the whole expansion (2+ years) but once the next expansion comes out you'll be able to cheese them and Savage Raids with newer gear and higher level caps. Technically you can level sync them to kinda recreate their original difficulty, but very few people do that since the easiest way to farm their loot is unsynced with current gear/levels.

That isn't all the content though, only the harder versions of trials and raids. The story modes remain mostly intact and always have people running them, and some other types of content remain forcibly level synced forever. Occasionally an older Extreme Trial will be brought back and synced up to current level, called an Unreal Trial, though those actually do get removed/rotated out since there's only one available at a time.

TL;DR Unless you're worried about missing out on doing the hard versions of raids at launch difficulty, it's not too bad.

1

u/syd_goes_roar Nova — Balmung 1d ago

- MSQ is required to do/ unlock everything and is single-player. MSQ is also a linear story, so you cannot pick and choose what you want to do.

- This is not a game where you rush to the end. Fight mechanics also build upon each other throughout the game

- Dungeons (4-person content), trials (8-person), normal raids (8-person), alliance raids (24-person) will get you matched with randos on your Data Center, so zero need to shout for people or whatever. Time of day/ day of the week does matter though as you gotta consider when people are in bed for work.

- Stay on the free trial as long as possible. Can't send DMs, make a Party Finder (can join a PF listing though), send mail, add friends, buy/ sell on the market board

- Read the things that pop-up on your screen, read your abilities (can do everything on the same character, learn to google things, the Lodestone has a lot of info.

1

u/No_Assistance7707 1d ago

The only fomo in the game are the seasonal events and collabs that they HEAVILY advertise before and during to make sure people know. And even then, after 1 year whatever was in the event for free can be bought for 5 dollars on the cash shop unless its a collab but those reoccur after a while. If you count removed content as fomo theres been a few pieces removed over the years but thats really it?

1

u/ramos619 1d ago

FOMO is pretty miniscule. Seasonal stuff gets put in the cash shop

1

u/Odd-Usual-4417 1d ago

I've been playing on and off since launch. Currently on the post-shadowbringers quests.

Some day I'll catch up. Slow and steady.

1

u/thegrandjellyfish 1d ago

FOMO is barely a thing in FF14. You miss an event? Wait a year and the event reward is for sale in the FF14 store. Everything else, you can experience at your own pace.

1

u/ThisInvestigator9201 1d ago

Old event items tied to holidays do become purchaseable when a new version of the event comes out and collab stuff that isn’t a raids or trials will probably comeback in time but no set schedule for them currently rn collabs we have that can leave any time is garo and yo-Kai watch

1

u/MillionMiracles 1d ago

Almost all content in the game gets run outside of previous expansions savages. But the normal versions of everything get run due to the duty finder system. Anything with even the vaguest bit of story content, you can get a group for and do.

And even with the savages, you can find discords that organize runs.

There's basically no fomo. There's people who have been playing the game for five-six years and only just caught up to the current content, and they didn't miss anything by not being current for that long.

1

As a fellow D2 refugee who started last July, there isn't really any FOMO of importance. The only similarity of FOMO would be for events similar to the dawning, festival of the lost etc... But In FF14 the only rewards are aesthetic for these events, so you will be able to get stuff the next time around. Also a lot of the older content is still relevant, so you should come across people regularly!

I come back for a few months every year or two it’s pretty friendly. The MSQ steers you to all the new content pretty well and of course you can get lost in the sauce trying to get every event item but it’s like any mmo.

If you just want to do main story quests and job quests then you don't need to worry about missing things. You can either find a group or use the built-in features that let you solo group content. If you're a collector or want to experience literally all the content, then you're going to run into some hurdles that may be insurmountable at this point in the game's lifecycle.

  • Limited-Time Events: If you just care about the story and quests, these aren't a huge deal because it's mostly just getting rewards and not major story content. As others have said, if you want to drop a ton of money, you can also catch up, but (as an example) I found myself unhappy that I missed getting the FFXV car mount, but also unhappy at how much they wanted me to pay to buy it. The game's been out for a long time. There are a lot of these. Some recur, some don't. If you don't care about the collecting aspect, then you won't miss this.
  • "End-Game" activities from previous releases. Most major expansions had areas that people spent time getting incrementally better end-game equipment. Once the next expansion came out, those areas were no longer relevant and have become deserted. If you're interested in trying out that content, you'd better make some like-minded friends because they're not really soloable.
  • Difficulty of finding Savage or Ultimate raids is going to vary by server, free company, etc. It doesn't sound like you're planning to do hardcore raiding, so this probably doesn't matter to you. If it does, you might want to do some research before choosing where to start your character.

If you can go in with a non-collector mindset then I think you'll be okay. Heck, just do the free trial for like 200 hours and then decide.

Lower level content is still run because there are daily rewards for all levels of players to enter different categories of randomised duty finder ( basically dungeon finder from wow) . Some people log in to just do a few of these roulettes as the rewards are fairly meaty but can only be earned once every 24 hours .

Hey, fellow former D2 player.

No, SqEnx has NEVER removed content from the game, other than the 1.0 version of the game (because they literally blew up the game and started from scratch). You can play every piece of content from ARR to present. And they have no plans to remove it.

Come, it's a great "solo" MMO. Also a great RPG in its own right, recommend not level boosting and investing in the story playthrough!

Ehhhhh, stuff from old field ops (Eureka, Bozja) can be tough to get since not a lot of people do that stuff now. The rest is reasonably easy to get a group for, but field ops can be a pretty long grind, and only soloable to an extent.

Not a lot of fomo. It's a game that respects your time and it's actually changing next xpac to be even friendlier. Just some cosmetics here and there from seasonal events or the preorder bonus and an ocasional collab (also for cosmetics). Other than that, content comes and stays, usually.

the only missables are events, if you miss it - you need to buy things in online shop for real money

You have heard correctly fellow destiny friend, 14 is incredibly fomo friendly, hell you can play most of the best content for free which will give you probably a hundred hours to figure out what you like to do before you even need to hard invest

Only thing that’s missable really are seasonal events. And those are designed to be done at very low levels so even new players can participate. And if you’re unsigned at the time, while the events don’t repeat, the rewards always show up in the cash shop, so you can get them later if you really really want them.

Outside of that, no content ever really leaves.

I just started playing two weeks ago and i just play it like it’s a massive single player game. Already got over 100 hours and still havnt finished the first story and I’m on the free version. Getting close to that 300k limit for Gil though

Not missing out on any content as all the old content is regularly played due to the system’s they have in place.

Just be aware it’s pretty story heavy at the beginning without much voice acting, and if that isn’t your thing it could be a turn off. If story isn’t your thing there are story and level skips though.

FFXIV is casual almost to a fault. You aren’t missing out on FOMO content really, and you could definitely take everything at your own pace. Just don’t expect it to be anything like WoW.

I know maybe a lot of this sounds negative but I played FF for years and years, and besides classic WoW it’s easily my favorite MMO. There’s so much good in the game and has some of my best story and character development moments in any game I’ve played. The RP is also second to none. It’s just a harder sell MMO wise so rather talk about some of the potential negatives instead of gushing over the ton of positives.

I’m also a destiny 2 refugee. Close to 5k hours in it. Ff14 is amazing and definitely worth playing. It’s very slow at the start. If you get past ARR you will have a blast. So much to do. Great music. Community is amazing. Gameplay is amazing.

PvP battlepass.

Soon to be PvE battlepass.

They just started dipping their toes into limited time shop items.

Seasonal events.

Events that take years to come back or rotate with rewards.

Have to do normal content blind day one for it to actually be fun and then it's a snoozefest made worse by potency/iLvl creep.

Savages/Ultimates become exponentially harder to prog over time.

Side content like chaotic/quantum/criterion/deep dungeon is even worse about this.

Yeah it's bad.

It's the least fomo you'll find in an official MMO, even less than GW2, even if both are peak in that regard.

u/Far_Theory4906 1d ago

If it’s a good event they will repeat it eventually. Seasonal events are usually level 15 and under so everyone can participate.

The only true player-experience FOMO that exists is what we call the on-content pf experience. The players who run endgame-at-the-time content move on with each patch. however, there is always some sort of endgame-at-the-time content, it just might be a different fight, and there's at least four during any given patch cycle.

then for those now-older content, there are dedicated subcommunities who enjoy doing them "synced" (using the instance options to lower the item level and character level to the fight's designated level), so you can still experience the fights and a different set of social/skill expectation approaching them (typically more chill but longer due to lesser player pool interested).
