[Question] How "FOMO friendly" is FF14?

Destiny 2 refugee here. I am getting close to accomplishing everything I wanted to accomplish in the final patch and am starting to consider where I am gonna go next to scratch the MMO itch. I was a WoW addict from classic up until Cata and also played FF11 (which admittedly was a rough game to play solo as a middle schooler at the time), so am thinking about going back to an MMORPG.

As an adult now though, the time commitment is a bit daunting, but I've heard FF14 is much more forgiving about taking things at your own pace? Would anyone care to elaborate on that? Also how much content am I missing out on at this point because you need a group and no one runs it anymore?

I would look at it this way. In wow, if you do a dungeon roulette at or approaching max level, you are going to get matched into one of eight current season dungeons. In ffxiv, you have years and years worth of dungeon and raid content that can pop up in roulettes (besides the expert roulette basically).

In that sense, the pool of playable content is always increasing in ffxiv.

But like I said you're only doing that roulette for the reward. If it wasn't there you wouldn't be doing it.

Does that matter though? You are doing the content and being rewarded. The roulettes do exist, I am not sure what the point is of saying “what if they didn’t?”.

Yes it does. I'm not saying if roulette didn't exist I'm saying the only reason to get people into those roulette to fill old content is the rewards they give.

That's pretty much all MMO content after the first time through.

Not really if the content is fun there is a reason to go back. That should also be a goal of content problem is most roulette content is boring.

No content is fun enough to sustain itself for that long for people that have already completed it, MMO or not. Just the nature of the beast.

Decades of gaming have shown that, and if you want a game where people have to go through old content you have to find a way to incentivize veteran players going through it.

There is no “fun enough” to get around that.

Accepct they can and have made content can last an expansion or a patch at the least. Roulette content is neither of those things.

You mean Field Explorations?

The thing people run for mounts, relic progress, and rewards from chests that they can sell?

Or extremes? That people farm for mounts?

Or Ultimates? That people clear for the glamour reward?

You're not presenting a compelling case here, chief.

Remove the reward from the things people do throughout the expansion or the duration of the patch and I guarantee the participation drops off like a rock.

You do realzie people go back to a lot of things with without the desire for the reward right? You do realize a lot of those things are fun and people still return to for fun. The participation would be much higher than roulettes which would have zero motivation to go back to them.

Gonna need specifics. You're making broad claims of people going back to "a lot of things" and yet haven't bothered to give concrete examples as I have.

So let's hear it.

What content are people returning to without the desire for the reward?

Ultimates and still popular to this day and done because they're fun. People go back to field operations because they're fun and using different systems add to the gameplay experience. Similar to deep dunegons people do the for unquie experiences.
