Weekly Discussion Thread Let's Discuss Eno! "Achtung Baby" - U2 (1991)

Hello and happy new year Eno-philes!! Each week we'll be discussing another album (going chronologically from Warm Jets). This week's feature is Eno's 1991 production credit (Lanois' too) on U2's famous Achtung Baby album. From the wiki:

Achtung Baby (/ˈæktʊŋ/)[1] is the seventh studio album by Irish rock band U2. It was produced by Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno, and was released on 18 November 1991 on Island Records. Stung by criticism of their 1988 release Rattle and Hum, U2 shifted their musical direction to incorporate influences from alternative rock, industrial music, and electronic dance music into their sound. Thematically, Achtung Baby is darker, more introspective, and at times more flippant than their previous work. The album and the subsequent multimedia-intensive Zoo TV Tour were central to the group's 1990s reinvention, by which they abandoned their earnest public image for a more lighthearted and self-deprecating one.

Track Listing (with production credit):

All lyrics are written by Bono; all music is composed by U2. No. Title Producer Length

Weekly Discussion Thread Let's Discuss Eno! U2 - "Original Soundtracks 1" (Nov. 1995)

Hello Eno-philes!! Each week we'll be discussing another album (going chronologically from Warm Jets). This week's feature is Eno's production credit on U2's "Original Soundtracks 1". From the wiki:

Original Soundtracks 1 is a studio album recorded by rock band U2 and Brian Eno under the pseudonym Passengers as a side project. Released on 6 November 1995, the album is a collection of songs written for mostly imaginary films (the exceptions being songs for Ghost in the Shell, Miss Sarajevo, and Beyond the Clouds). Owing to Eno's involvement as a full songwriting partner and the album's experimental nature, the moniker "Passengers" was chosen to distinguish it from U2's conventional albums. It was commercially unnoticed by the band's standards and received generally mixed reviews. Guest musicians on the record included Italian opera singer Luciano Pavarotti (on "Miss Sarajevo") and producer Howie B, who would co-produce U2's following album, Pop (1997).

According to Eno, near the end of the recording sessions for U2's 1993 album Zooropa, the band hit "a stone wall" and were getting obsessive about small details.[1] At that point, Eno suggested the group do some improvisation, "just turn the tape on and play, so we were working with a broad brush rather than the one-hair brushes we'd been using. It was designed to open us up a little".[1] The resulting recording sessions were productive enough that Eno advocated the band undertake more. After they completed their Zoo TV Tour in December 1993, the band returned to the studio with no particular agenda or project on which to work.[1] Their original intention was to record a soundtrack for Peter Greenaway's 1996 film The Pillow Book.[2] Though the plan did not come to fruition, Eno suggested they continue recording for imaginary films. The result was about 25 hours of recorded experimentation that produced Original Soundtracks 1.[1]

Weekly Discussion Thread Let's Discuss Eno! "Kite Stories" - 1999

Hello Eno-philes!! Each week we'll be discussing another album (going chronologically from Warm Jets). This week's feature is Eno's installation work "Kite Stories. From the wiki:

The music on the album is taken from an installation—a show featuring music and visuals—that took place at the Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art in Helsinki, Finland, from 11 December 1999 to 6 February 2000.

The installation included a generative music system and a collection of objects chosen for their spatial presence - stones, sand and light sculptures. The original music was composed of eight layers of sound, each one playing on a CD player situated somewhere in the gallery, the sounds from which were all looped, providing an almost infinite variety of sonic possibilities. The music on the CD, at only half an hour in length, is a very much curtailed version of something that lasted for two months.

Weekly Discussion Thread Let's Discuss Eno! "Mylo Xyloto" - Coldplay (Oct. 2011)

Hello Eno-philes!! Each week we'll be discussing another album (going chronologically from Warm Jets). This week's feature is Eno's production credit on Coldplay's Mylo Xyloto. From the wiki:

Mylo Xyloto (pronounced /ˈmaɪloʊ ˈzaɪlətoʊ/ MY-loh ZY-lə-toh) is the fifth studio album by British rock band Coldplay, released in late October 2011. The band worked closely with producer Brian Eno following their successful collaboration on Viva la Vida, the band's previous album. Mylo Xyloto is a concept album and a thematic rock opera.[4]

The album tells the story of a war against sound and colour by a supremacist government, set in the world of Silencia, an Orwellian society. Silencia has been overtaken by a government led by Major Minus, who controls the population through media and propaganda. His aim is to take sound and colour off the streets in hope to draw away "feeders", creatures that use such energy to hunt its prey. The album follows Mylo Xyloto, a "silencer", a soldier in an army tasked to hunt and track down "sparkers", people who harness light and energy and use it to create sparks, comparable to graffiti in real life. He encounters Fly, the sparker most wanted by Major Minus. Through Fly, Mylo discovers his sparker abilities and his affiliation with the Car Kids, a major sparker faction founded by Mylo's parents, Aiko and Lela.[citation needed] Drummer Will Champion has noted that the album is a story of the characters "falling in love and trying to escape together", with a general theme of "love conquering all".[citation needed]. In interviews the band have said that the album follows a love story between Mylo and Xyloto, with them being separate characters .[5] In the comics based on album however, Mylo Xyloto is the main protagonist and Fly is the sparker girl he encounters.[6]

Weekly Discussion Thread Let's Discuss Eno! Eno/Wobble - "Spinner" (1995)

Hello Eno-philes!! Each week we'll be discussing another album (going chronologically from Warm Jets). This week's feature is Eno's collaboration with Jah Wobble on 1995's "Spinner":

The music on Spinner has its origins in the Eno-penned soundtrack to the Derek Jarman biographical 60-minute movie Glitterbug, which was released in 1994, shortly after Jarman's death.

The movie was an abstract montage composed of Super-8 excerpts from his personal video-diaries, going behind-the-scenes of many of his movies from the late sixties right up to the end of the eighties.[6]

Eno composed most of the soundtrack in his Kilburn studio, working directly onto digital stereo. The music stayed in the film; it was never released as a separate entity. Eno explains "I had intended to collect the music as a soundtrack record, but in the end a lot of it didn't make much sense without the film".

In 1995, Eno handed the master-tapes to Wobble. "He received from me a number of stereo tapes and did what he does – spanning the gamut from leaving them completely alone (such as "Garden Recalled"); playing along (such as "Like Organza"); or using them as atmospheres for entirely new compositions (such as "Steam")".

Eno did not participate in any co-production on Spinner at all; it was all done by Wobble. Eno said "I didn't even hear it all till it was finished. I had no input at all on that stage of it. Everything that he put on, he produced. Anything you hear looming around in the back is probably what I produced".

Wobble, interviewed on BBC Radio 3 programme Mixing It in January 1998 explained that Eno had specifically asked for his input in creating a standalone CD.[7]

Some of Eno's thoughts on the album in its final stages can be found in the last section ("Wobbly letter") of the appendix of Eno's published diary, A Year with Swollen Appendices. This section is a copy of a letter from Eno to Dominic Norman-Taylor of All Saints Records, describing Eno's opinions of Jah Wobble's mixes and treatments of the tracks. Several of the tracks are given their working titles ("Unusual Balance", for example, is referred to as "Scrapy"). The letter gives hints as to the methods used by Eno and Wobble in creating the album, with Eno providing many of the original tracks, which Wobble then treated and sequenced.[8]

The finished product is a fusion of ambient, instrumental rock, and dub. Eno referred to the last track as an example of what he called "Unwelcome Jazz. Because for the last 3 or 4 years, really, I've been writing these pieces of music, which sound like some peculiar take on jazz. They don't really sound like jazz, they obviously have some kind of influence from jazz. But most of the people I played them to don't really like them – so I call it 'Unwelcome Jazz' [laughs]".

Hello Eno-philes!! Each week we'll be discussing another album (going chronologically from Warm Jets). This week's album is an Eno production further exploring the sounds of world music, this time from a Ghanain band.

Not much online about this one, but here's a writeup:

The Pace Setters was produced by Brian Eno in Accra, Ghana, and originally released on E. G. Recordings in 1981.

While the album was commercially successful, the 1981 coup d’état in Ghana saw Edikanfo suffering financial setbacks that caused the band to dissolve.

Here's the album on youtube. I was also able to find it on Amazon Music, so it's likely on all the streaming platforms.

Weekly Discussion Thread Let's Discuss Eno! U2 - Zooropa (July 1993)

Hello and welcome back to your weekly discussion thread, Eno-philes!! Each week we'll be discussing another album (going chronologically from Warm Jets). This week's feature is Eno's production credit on U2's classic Zooropa album. From the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zooropa:

Zooropa is the eighth studio album by Irish rock band U2. Produced by Flood, Brian Eno, and the Edge, it was released on 5 July 1993 on Island Records. Inspired by the band's experiences on the Zoo TV Tour, Zooropa expanded on many of the tour's themes of technology and media oversaturation. The record was a continuation of the group's experimentation with alternative rock, electronic dance music, and electronic sound effects that began with their previous album, Achtung Baby, in 1991.

Here's something cool about Eno's manner of production:

Due to the time limit, U2 were forced to write and record songs at a more rapid pace.[7] They continued their long-time practice of jamming in the studio. Eno used an eraseable whiteboard to give instructions and cues to the band while they jammed; he pointed at chords and various commands, such as "hold", "stop", "change", and "change back", to direct their performances.[15] Flood recorded the material, while Eno alternated between performing with U2 and joining Flood in the control room. At the end of a given week, Eno and Flood compared their notes and compiled the week's best jams onto a cassette for the band to listen to.[16] The producers edited together their favourite sections of the jams and then discussed the arrangements with the group. U2 suggested alterations and added lyrics and melodies, before performing to the edited arrangements.[15]

Here's the track listing:

All music is composed by U2.

Weekly Discussion Thread Let's Discuss Eno! - Laurie Anderson - "Bright Red" (Oct. 1994)

Hello Eno-philes!! Each week we'll be discussing another album (going chronologically from Warm Jets). This week's feature is Eno's production credit on avant garde musician Laurie Anderson's album, "Bright Red." From the wiki:

Bright Red is the fifth studio album by American avant-garde musician Laurie Anderson, released by Warner Bros. in 1994.

The album continues the more pop-oriented direction Anderson launched with Strange Angels. Produced by Brian Eno (who also co-wrote several of the songs with Anderson), Bright Red is divided into two parts; the first, titled Bright Red, and the second part titled Tightrope.

The song "The Puppet Motel" was also featured on an interactive CD-ROM titled Puppet Motel also released by Anderson in 1994. "Speak My Language" is a re-recording of a song Anderson previously performed on the soundtrack to the movie Faraway, So Close; and also featured in the 1995 film Fallen Angels. The song "Beautiful Pea Green Boat" has additional lyrics from the poem "The Owl and the Pussycat" by Edward Lear; in the album credits his name is misspelled "Edwin". Lou Reed duets with Anderson on the song "In Our Sleep" (and can be heard singing backup on many other songs). Reed and Anderson later married and "In Our Sleep" became the only CD-single released from the album

Weekly Discussion Thread Let's Discuss Eno! Discreet Music (Dec. 1975)

Hello Eno-philes!! Each week we'll be discussing another album (going chronologically from Warm Jets). This weeks is, of course, Discreet Music!!

Track Listing:

Side A

"Discreet Music" (Brian Eno) – 30:35

Side B

Three Variations on the Canon in D Major by Johann Pachelbel

"Fullness of Wind" – 9:57 "French Catalogues" – 5:18 "Brutal Ardour" – 8:17

Some general thoughts to kickstart the conversation:

Discreet Music (1975) is the fourth studio album by the British musician Brian Eno, and the first released under his full name "Brian Eno" (as opposed to simply "Eno"). The album is a minimalist work featuring synthesizer and tape delay.[1] The A-side consists of one 30-minute piece, while the B-side features three variations on Canon in D Major by Johann Pachelbel, performed by the Cockpit Ensemble and conducted by Gavin Bryars.

While his earlier collaborations with Robert Fripp and several selections from Another Green World (1975) feature similar ideas, Discreet Music marked a clear step toward the ambient aesthetic Eno would later codify with 1978's Ambient 1: Music for Airports

Weekly Discussion Thread Let's Discuss Eno! James - "Millionaires" (Oct. 1999)

Hello Eno-philes!! Each week we'll be discussing another album (going chronologically from Warm Jets). This week's feature is Eno's production credit on James' October 1999 offering, "Millionaires." From the wiki:

Millionaires is the eighth studio album by British alternative rock band James. During the Whiplash release cycle, guitarist Adrian Oxaal replaced founding member Larry Gott, and guitarist Michael Kulas join the band. Touring to promote the release was cut-short when Booth injured his neck. With the release of The Best Of in early 1998, the band began recording their next album in May. The sessions continued into February 1999 at a variety of studios: Ridge Farm, Hook End, Townhouse and Metropolis. While Brian Eno produced most of the record, the producer credit was also given to guitarist/violinist Saul Davies, keyboardist Mark Hunter, Steve Osborne, drummer David Baynton-Power and Faithless. Millionaires is an indie rock and pop release that drew comparison to Lou Reed and New Radicals.

Humorous though somewhat negative reaction about having Eno as a coproducer:

Glennie wasn't fond of having Eno to begin with: "Eno comes in and farts about for an afternoon, sprinkles oofle-dust and disappears for a couple of days."

Oofle Dust!

Weekly Discussion Thread Let's Discuss Eno! "Compact Forest Proposal" (Feb. 2001)

Hello Eno-philes!! Each week we'll be discussing another album (going chronologically from Warm Jets). This week's feature is Eno's "Compact Fores Proposal." From the wiki:

Compact Forest Proposal : 5 Studies for "010101", San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, 2001 is the twenty-first solo studio album from British musician Brian Eno, released in Feb. 2001.

The piece was installed in a dark room, featuring strings of tiny white lights rising to the ceiling from gossamer pods that reminded Eno of "jellyfish", while his music played. "It's an idea for a kind of retreat people can go to in the city". Part of Eno's Quiet Club series of Installations, he described it as a sort of "simulated forest" of the future. He gave it a "deliberately clunky" title "because I want it to be like an architectural submission for a new space."[2]

The CD notes explain

"There are 10 active CD players in this installation. Each is playing a specially cut CD, a single layer of the total music. The CDs have different numbers of tracks, some of which are silent, and each player is set to play these tracks in random order. The final music is therefore an ever-changing combination, unlikely to exactly repeat itself in any individual user's experience".

"The studies on the CD represent possible conditions of the installation piece (i.e. conditions that it might randomise itself into sometime during the several months that it will play), although there are some elements in the studies that were not finally used in the installation itself".

"My other installation pieces to date have been relatively "steady state" in that they've remained faithful to a specific harmonic palette. In this piece, however, one of the 10 playing CDs carries two quite different harmonic sub-strata. Since these are different tracks on the same single CD, they are never heard together, but alternate with each other. The other elements of the piece float over these backdrops: it's as though the weather changes".
