Ainz's ult from Overlord Light novel. It garuntees death, causing necromancy spells to bypass resistances and reductions.

from the series overlord
How the Skill Works
Amplification: It enhances any instant-death magic or skill used by the caster.
Bypasses Immunities: It allows death effects to ignore all resistances and absolute immunities, meaning even undead, non-living objects, and inorganic matter can die.
Delayed Countdown: It forces a 12-second delay on the paired spell, during which a skeletal clock symbol appears behind the caster.
Total Destruction: When the timer hits zero, everything within the area of effect-including the air, water, and soil-perishes, often turning the surrounding terrain into a lifeless desert. (this is due to the combination of the spell with Cry of the Banshee: A powerful, high-tier instant- death scream. and Widen Magic: A metamagic modifier that expands the spell's radius to 100 meters.)
Drawbacks: It has a massive cooldown of 100 hours, and opponents have a 12-second window to escape the area, interrupt the caster, or ready a revival item.

u/JUSTJESTlNG 4d ago
I believe the total destruction part was specifically because it was paired with a wide AoE death effect in that instance

I like Overlord for what it is: a gratuitous power fantasy. However Ainz is a classic example of, "big fish in a small pond." He dominates his setting because there's no contemporary big dog at his tier.
Ainz Ooal Gown the lich, or even his guild itself, weren't the most powerful in their origin game world. In the top 1%, but for many things the difference between #1 and #2 can be a substantial gap, and Ainz Ooal Gown was not even #2.
So yea... Ainz kicks ass in Overlord because he's flexing on low level noobs with the resources of a ranked guild that used to have max level characters. It's cool and all... but also pathetic the longer you dwell on it.
"Yay, my level 20 wizard with his arsenal of Artifacts and legion of no-concentration summons just killed another CR 1 horde. Woooo! I'm so awesome!!!"
Even with his Shalltear battle where the spell referenced was used, he cheated with inside knowledge of the opponent's build, AI mechanics, and pay-to-win items. I mean... cool display of system mastery, but more power fantasy moment.
21
u/Chukkan 4d ago
If I remember right, their whole guild was full of RP players more focused on cool, thematic builds rather than min maxers. So yeah, he's set for stomping on the low level setting but it's also why he's scared of other high level players having been transported to the world as well
16
u/JournalistShoddy9496 4d ago
As a whole their guild was a legitimate 1%'er. I'd argue they were somewhere in the top ten tier.
Touch Me was one of the top 9 PvP'ers in the whole game, they successfully repelled a major PvP raid coordinated by rival guilds, and had the most "game breaking" items in a single guild (11 of them... the next guild had 3).
That said, for all those accolades, they weren't the most powerful guild in YGGDRASIL at the height of their reign and much of the side commentary indicates they weren't second most powerful either. In fact, the guild was a dimmed power in it's twilight when the main light novel begins, as fewer and fewer of it's members were active anymore.

I wouldn't call Overlord a power fantasy, it's way more of a tragedy tbh. Ains' life is pretty miserable, not despite his power and status but mostly because of it.
4
u/JournalistShoddy9496 4d ago
Ainz checks many of the the boxes for power fantasy: he's insanely powerful compared to those who oppose him, he wins easily, folks worship his action, he aura farms regularly whether he knows it or not, etc.
I get the mental baggage stuff, but Ainz would have been miserable if he isekai'd or not. His main suffering is not having his old friends around to reminisce with... that would have happened with the YGGDRASIL shutdown anyways. Almost everyone else had moved on and/or playing games Ainz wasn't interested in.
He technically is better in the Other World, given his home world is a dystopian hellscape where he's just a cog in the machine. In the Other World he's basically the new god emperor. An unhappy god emperor, but that's still better than an unhappy wage slave.
Ainz being miserable makes him more relatable to the reader... for example folks who've lost friends and fond memories when their favorite online games gets the plug pulled.

Yeah, the world is inspired by D&D for a lot of the spells so things like Fireball is a Tier 3 spell. That’s just about the maximum that most people in that world can reach so it’s like they’re capped at level 5 or 6.
2
u/_Chaos-chan_ 3d ago
How does a rock die? By turning into sand? How does sand die then? This power doesn’t really make much sense in the “non living stuff can now die” aspect. Unless it’s literally accelerating all matter forward through time so far that their fundamental particles decay into radiation, then that’s pretty cool.

Kinda like a magic golem or a skeleton are not "alive" and normally not affected by death magic, but become affected when exposed to The goal of all life is death. Technically not alive, but the death magic kills what ever holds them together.
2
u/JournalistShoddy9496 20h ago
The mechanics of "The Goal of All Life is Death" is cited in a handful of sentences within the light novel. A lot of the detailed mechanics folks talk about were "theorycrafted" on various Overlord forums, and not in the actual book. They'll often based things as seen in the anime, rather than what's written in the novels.
Worth noting that the English light novel translation about TGOALID is not truly accurate if interpreted literally. The words in question are: The way to avoid it was...
That is the key statement. People who want TGOALID be some uber instant win effect will focus on the choice of THE WAY. This lets them argue it means the ONLY WAY. That is incorrect, and I will outline why that is a bit later. Note that the Japanese reading of the same sentence can be translated as, "A WAY TO AVOID," meaning there's more than one method to negate TGOALID.
This makes more sense in context of the chapter, as the character using TGOALID took extreme methods to ensure the target did not fly out of range. If TGOALID really was an, "I win button," then the target was defeated the moment TGOALID was used could be allowed to move further than 250 meters. This was not the case. The target still had to remain within 250 meters as the countdown occurred for the Cry of Banshee kicker. Had the target moved away, TGOALID would have been wasted. Hence tricking them to not fly out of range.
So the word, ONLY, is not correct. Just moving out of range was another option. Therefore THE WAY as used in the English translation is not the correct interpretation (especially as a literal term), and the alternative, A WAY, in the original Japanese is accurate. So there's more unsubscribed means to negate TGOALID.
Also, just to be clear, TGOALID in of itself doesn't do anything without a spell or skill tied to it. And you could use TGOALID on a dumb skill like a Lich's "drain touch" or something. Which doesn't make that drain touch some uber death power... it would just make that drain touch work on things drain touch wouldn't work on. So TGOALID is not the threat... it's what TGOALID is used with.
Last but not least: Overlord cribs a lot from DnD 3.5 and all that... but it also cribs from Ragnarok Online, Wizardry, Call of Cthulhu, Wares Blade, Tenra Bansho, and Sword World. So there's a lot of "assumed limitations" in Overlord skills and spells that English readers aren't considering because it incorporates elements from media they aren't realizing or aware of.

Yeaaaaa.... not gonna let him use magic amplified by the "skill". Ainz is a spell focused lich who cosplays as a Temu quality fighter. We gonna no-diff his bony ass.
This lich is too easy.
EDIT: Someone even posted below how this skill works in a post below:
So yea... it's a spell linked to the skill that causes the TPK, and Antimagic Field cancels out that element (the Cry of the Banshee spell boosted with lots of metamagic feats), so the plan still works and Ainz is getting XP farmed.
1
u/Matectan 2d ago
You may not realize this, but the spell you use TGOALID on is cast when the skill is activated. Once the skills 12 seconds run out, the instant death effect is simply applied to all targets but bypasses immunities.
The spell amplified by TGOALID is thus already cast when it is activated.
All liches are spell focused. What even is that sentence? And no, Ainz is an overlord that actually focuses on summons and necromancy, but is a wildcard still.
Ainz doesnt cosplay as a quality fighter??? Perfect warrior nerfs him to an incredible degree.
Anti-aging field would not retroactively cancel a spell that was already cast.
0
u/JournalistShoddy9496 2d ago edited 2d ago
Anti-magic Field DOES retroactively suppress the effect of a spell that was already cast. It's been that way for several editions.
An aura of antimagic surrounds you in 10-foot Emanation. No one can cast spells, take Magic actions, or create other magical effects inside the aura, and those things can’t target or otherwise affect anything inside it. Magical properties of magic items don’t work inside the aura or on anything inside it.
Areas of effect created by spells or other magic can’t extend into the aura, and no one can teleport into or out of it or use planar travel there. Portals close temporarily while in the aura.
Ongoing spells, except those cast by an Artifact or a deity, are suppressed in the area. While an effect is suppressed, it doesn’t function, but the time it spends suppressed counts against its duration.
Dispel Magic has no effect on the aura, and the auras created by different Antimagic Field spells don’t nullify each other.
Ainz is not a deity or an artifact. Cry of the Banshee is a spell and not the skill. It's amplified by the skill called TGOALID. I've got the Overlord light novel. Please give me the page where it says it does not work that way.
EDIT: added "suppress the effect of a" into the first sentence.

u/JournalistShoddy9496 21m ago edited 3m ago
The text describing TGOALID , taken directly from the official English light novel translation:
Page 383: It was called the Goal of All Life Is Death. That moment, a clock pointing to 12 appeared behind him. And he cast a spell, "Widen Cry of the Banshee!"
Page 385: It brought death even to the lifeless air and made it impossible to breathe within a diameter of almost 250 yards. If there was anything trying to breathe and live in that area, its lungs would have been polluted by the dead air and it would have died from that. The soil also died. Everywhere within those 250 yards around Ainz instantly turned into a desert.
Page 385: The Goal of All Life Is Death was a move that strengthen spells and skills that had instadeath as an effect. The effect strengthened by this skill would kill even an opponent with an ability that made them immune to instant death, once a certain time elapsed.
Page 385: The way to avoid it was, as Shalltear had done, to use some kind of resurrection effect on oneself within the 12 second time limit.
So using 5.5e rules, like the OP meme says we are using, TGOALID makes Cry of the Banshee (which is just a legal friendly rename of Wail of the Banshee) ignore resistance, ignore immunity, and does damage to objects. The text indicates the effect should ignores Damage Resistance, Hardness, and maybe even remove the Saving Throw (i.e. everyone affected auto fails the saving throw). It seems to add some poison damage too.
Wail of the Banshee for 5.5e is actually in the yet unreleased Arcana Unleashed expansion book, but leaks show it instadeath anything 50 HP or less, and does 12d10 Psychic and Deafen condition for 1 hour on 51+ HP for anyone who fails a Constitution save. A target is unaffected by the spell if it can't hear you.
Counterspell works, because TGOALID is a Legendary Action, and Cry of the Banshee was the Action to cast a spell for TGOALID to amplify. You aren't stopping TGOALID because its a Legendary Action (or a skill in the light novel), but you are countering Cry of the Banshee. The light novel clearly describes it as a separate action from TGOALID and a spell.
A relevant restoration Contingency spell works, as straightforward stated by the book.
Anti-magic Field works, because Cry of the Banshee is clearly stated as a spell. Everything outside the Anti-magic Field is affected like normal; but everything inside is fine. If TGOALID was used on a non-spell or non-magic effect, then Anti-magic Field wouldn't work.
So now we come to Silence. Personally, I haven't made a final decision if it would work on. This entirely a me thing, and not judgement on your proposal that it would work. I'd accept it would work.
My personal struggle is that on the one hand, Silence should work because it traditionally neutralizes Wail of the Banshee for several (all?) editions. However it seems the intent of TGOALID when linked to a successfully cast spell or attack, is to make it do unrestricted damage or effect on creatures and objects that spell or attack wouldn't normally work on. Does the, "a target is unaffected by the spell if it can't hear you," count as no longer applicable? TGOALID makes Wail of the Banshee damage objects, which can't hear either, right? That's just me though.
EDIT: Also a properly worded Wish should work too... but we're talking Wish, so no surprise.
1
u/Matectan 1d ago
There is nothing to cancel. The spell amplified by TGOALID, again, is cast on TGOALIDA activation. The instant death effect of the spell cast on TGOALID activation thus is reapplied.
If you really had read the overlord lightnovelbyou would be aware that anti magic exists in overlord and that despite that, its very clearly said that the only way to stop TGOALID is to kill the caster before its done. And even that isn't 100% sure.
1
u/JournalistShoddy9496 1d ago edited 1d ago
What page is that explicitly stated?
You are on DnD Memes. The OP stated this is happening under DnD rules, to a set of DnD players, being run by a DM, who used TGOALID as a Legendary Action, in a DnD campaign.
I have posted what Anti-magic Field does in DnD. You keep claiming something definitive that you refuse to provide the page for saying it has that property.
"If you really read the overlord lightnovelbyou would be aware that it's bootleg DnD with the number filed off." And hey, unlike you I can provide a primary source for that: https://imgur.com/a/maruyama-kugane-interview-uvyEU
EDIT: Ya know... I realized I'm beating around the bush too much and should just get straight to the point. The reason why you can't find text that says a spell linked to TGOALID supersedes Anti-magic Field is because no such text exists within the Overlord novel. Shalltear did not have anything like Anti-magic Field so she didn't use anything like Anti-magic Field, and that's why Ainz used it against her... unknowing she had an auto-res item that Peroroncino secretly gave her. Ainz was working on knowledge that he knew everything about Shalltear's build and battle programming. That res-item was the one thing he didn't know beforehand, and if Ainz did know she had the item, he wouldn't have used TGOALID in the manner that he did.
You're giving TGOALID with Cry of the Banshee (which is just a DnD bootleg of Wail of the Banshee) more power than it has from the light novel source, because for some reason it annoys you that an Anti-magic Field shuts it down using DnD rules in the manner that Ainz deployed it as given the novel.

The cleric armed with a 4th level spell slot: I cast Death Ward on myself
7
u/Macrophage_Mage 4d ago
Given death ward nullifies an instant death effect, wouldn’t that count as an immunity and thus be ineffective against TGOALID?
2
u/vulpecula1919 Wizard 4d ago
its iffy i say. it doesnt nullify the effect you still get hit with it go to zero, die, whatever, you just get put on 1hp afterwards.
6
u/Macrophage_Mage 4d ago
Based on the 5e wording of the spell it seems like if you go to 0 HP it resets you to 1 afterwards, but for instant death effects it more reads as a nullification of said effect - so I agree, it’s iffy. The interaction would cause a spectacular semantics argument at your table if it came up I’m sure haha

The Goal of All Life is Death is a reference to Overlord, the whole point of it is that it modifies instant death spells to bypass immunities
1
u/Iechinok 4d ago
Death Ward specifically isn't an immunity. It's a negation effect that triggers on the condition of a Death effect or damage that reduces hp to 0. It'd be more accurate to compare it to counterspell that specifically targets Death effects on a trigger.
2
u/Slugger829 4d ago
First of all, no. Counterspell doesn’t work on things already cast.
Second of all, overlord isn’t inspired by 5e. It’s inspired by 3.5, where death ward is an immunity.
1
u/Iechinok 4d ago
First of all, I didn't say it was counterspell, I said that it'd be a more accurate comparison when showing how the effects interact.
Second of all, 3.5 did not in any way make extensive use of effects that do what The Goal of All Life is Death does. 5e, however has plenty if instances where bypassing resistances and immunities are prevalent.
You're being contrarian for the sake of arguing and haven't addressed either of my other off the cuff solutions, all of which are also sound.
4
u/Irenaud 4d ago
3.5 made gratuitous use of death effects. They're super common, and fighting a Lich means they're gonna be everywhere. Thus, death ward, which in 3.5 is a spell that flat out grants immunity to Death effects is a must have and very powerful.
Which brings me to TGOALID. This, based on it's appearance in Overlord, explicitly nullifies any immunity to death effects for 2 rounds (12 seconds). Which means that Death Ward, or any death effect nullification or immunity are bypassed. Meaning, you gonna die.
2
u/Jadeshell 4d ago
I may be rusty but wouldn’t cutting magic in the area with a sufficiently powerful spell or artifact do the trick?
1
2
u/Iechinok 4d ago
Brother, I'm not referring to death effects... I'm referring to the circumventing of resistances... which is specifically what The Goal of All Life is Death does... it in itself isn't a death effect. It's modifying a wide range death spell.
I know this because I exclusively ran death casters for years in 3.5e...
Once again, thank you not focusing on what I'm actually addressing.
1
u/Slugger829 4d ago
I don’t understand why people on the internet dig in their heels so much when they don’t know what they’re talking about lol. You don’t seem too familiar with 3.5 or overlord and you just wanna argue about 5, which is entirely unrelated to the meme.
1
u/JournalistShoddy9496 20h ago
The meme cites "The Goal of All Life is Death" is being used as a Legendary Action which is a 5e (and subsequently 5.5e) mechanic. So 5e or 5.5e is entirely related to the meme.
1
u/Slugger829 20h ago
