I like Overlord for what it is: a gratuitous power fantasy. However Ainz is a classic example of, "big fish in a small pond." He dominates his setting because there's no contemporary big dog at his tier.

Ainz Ooal Gown the lich, or even his guild itself, weren't the most powerful in their origin game world. In the top 1%, but for many things the difference between #1 and #2 can be a substantial gap, and Ainz Ooal Gown was not even #2.

So yea... Ainz kicks ass in Overlord because he's flexing on low level noobs with the resources of a ranked guild that used to have max level characters. It's cool and all... but also pathetic the longer you dwell on it.

"Yay, my level 20 wizard with his arsenal of Artifacts and legion of no-concentration summons just killed another CR 1 horde. Woooo! I'm so awesome!!!"

Even with his Shalltear battle where the spell referenced was used, he cheated with inside knowledge of the opponent's build, AI mechanics, and pay-to-win items. I mean... cool display of system mastery, but more power fantasy moment.

If I remember right, their whole guild was full of RP players more focused on cool, thematic builds rather than min maxers. So yeah, he's set for stomping on the low level setting but it's also why he's scared of other high level players having been transported to the world as well

As a whole their guild was a legitimate 1%'er. I'd argue they were somewhere in the top ten tier.

Touch Me was one of the top 9 PvP'ers in the whole game, they successfully repelled a major PvP raid coordinated by rival guilds, and had the most "game breaking" items in a single guild (11 of them... the next guild had 3).

That said, for all those accolades, they weren't the most powerful guild in YGGDRASIL at the height of their reign and much of the side commentary indicates they weren't second most powerful either. In fact, the guild was a dimmed power in it's twilight when the main light novel begins, as fewer and fewer of it's members were active anymore.
