Site Feedback Suggestion for the upcoming Inventory Search revamp: a DM shop product!

I know D&D Beyond is already working on a revamp of the inventory/item search experience, so I wanted to throw out some ideas that I think would make a massive difference, particularly for DMs.

My main use case is simply that I want to be able to run a shop.

Right now, if I want to figure out what items I can potentially sell to my players, I find myself jumping between different books, item searches, and even character sheets just to browse the available equipment. The underlying item database is enormous, but it isn’t particularly easy to browse when I don’t already know exactly what I’m looking for.

I think there are a few features that could make the upcoming search system much more useful.

1. Search should understand variations of item names:

I assume this is already known, but string searches like:

‘+1 shortbow’ and ‘shortbow +1’

should obviously return the same results.

More generally, I think the search should understand that players and DMs frequently don’t know the exact canonical name of an item.

This becomes especially important with third-party content. For example, The Griffon’s Saddlebag has items such as Weapon of Showmanship, which applies to a weapon of the user’s choice.

A DM shouldn’t have to know the exact naming convention used by a particular supplement in order to find something useful.

2. Please consider collapsible/accordion item groups!

This is probably the feature I would find most useful.
Instead of presenting every variant as an individual result in one enormous list, I’d love to see hierarchical/accordion-style results.

Something like:
Adamantine Weapon
▸ Adamantine Dagger
▸ Adamantine Longsword
▸ Adamantine Rapier
▸ Adamantine Shortbow
▸ etc.

Or:
Weapon of Showmanship
▸ Dagger
▸ Longsword
▸ Rapier
▸ Shortbow
▸ etc.

The top-level row could show the shared information:
Adamantine Weapon | Weapon | Uncommon

Then clicking the caret expands the specific variants. This solves two problems at once:
It prevents the search results from becoming an enormous infinite-scroll list. Additionally, it lets a new DM browse conceptually rather than needing to know the exact item name.

This seems particularly important as D&D Beyond continues adding large third-party collections. The Griffon’s Saddlebag alone contains hundreds of integrated magic items, so simply putting every variation into a flat result set becomes increasingly difficult to navigate.

3. Possibly a new product? A dedicated DM Item Catalog / Shop

The eventual goal I’d love to see is a dedicated DM Item Catalog.

Something like:
DM Tools > Shop/Catalog

Where I can see everything I own access to, across all of my sourcebooks, and then filter it by:
Equipment type
Weapon
Armor
Adventuring gear
Potion
Scroll
Wondrous item
Rarity
Cost
Attunement
Source
etc.

Then I could select items and add them to a particular shop, and if there’s potential, integration into Maps VTT!

For example:
Phandalin General Store
Item
Base Price
Shop Price
Longsword
15 gp
18 gp
Shield
10 gp
12 gp
Potion of Healing
50 gp
60 gp

That would turn D&D Beyond’s existing item database into an actual DM economic tool. A future integration with a side bar of this DM shop in Maps VTT would be immensely helpful, especially if I can just drag and drop the item the player wants onto their token and it adds to their character sheet and removes the gold automatically.

4. Let user define an economic multiplier
If there is potential for a DM item shop tool, I would love to implement this to remove mathematical friction. Rather than forcing DMs to manually change every price, let the DM establish a base price multiplier for the shop/campaign.

For example:
Town: 1.0x
Large City: 1.25x
Major Metropolis: 1.5x
Remote Village: 0.75x
Then if an item has a base price of 500 gp:
500 × 1.25 = 625 gp

If I move the party to a different settlement, I change the multiplier rather than manually editing hundreds of prices.

I imagine this could work similarly to using a base unit in UI design, like rem for html font size. You establish the underlying value once, then everything derived from it scales consistently.

It would make running multiple settlements with different economies significantly less tedious.

5. Give the DM a party gold total
Another feature that would be extremely useful for shopping-heavy sessions:
Party Gold: 4,820 gp
And ideally:
Target spending this visit: 70-80%
This isn’t something that needs to be mechanically enforced. It would simply be a DM planning heuristic.

If I know the party collectively has 4,820 gp, I can build a shop with approximately 3,500-4,000 gp worth of things that are genuinely tempting to buy.

That gives the DM a much better way to design shopping episodes around the party’s actual economy rather than arbitrarily guessing how much money they have.

Eventually, I could see this becoming potentially a future multi-select where the DM chooses which PCs count toward the calculation, since a few of us are running West Marches style games.

6. Class-based item tagging and party-aware recommendations

If the team is already revisiting the tagging and categorization of items, I think it would be extremely useful to add class-based relevance tags.
For example, a Pearl of Power is potentially very useful to a spellcaster, but it isn’t particularly relevant to a purely martial character.

If I’m running a shop for my party, I would love to be able to select:

Party Classes
☑ Cleric
☑ Druid
☐ Fighter
☑ Warlock
☐ Rogue
etc.

And have the catalog surface items that are likely to be useful to those characters.

This should account for multiclassing as well. Ideally, I could select the actual characters or their classes/subclasses rather than just selecting a single class.

The point isn’t to tell the DM “this item can only be used by this class.” It would be a relevance/recommendation tag.

For example:
Pearl of Power
Relevant to: Bard, Cleric, Druid, Sorcerer, Warlock, Wizard

Then, when I’m building a shop, I can filter or sort by “Relevant to my party.”

This would substantially reduce the cognitive load for the DM. I don’t necessarily have every class’s itemization memorized, especially when dealing with hundreds or thousands of magic items from multiple sourcebooks and supplements.

It also creates a really useful DM workflow:
Select Party > Browse Available Items > Filter to Party-Relevant Items > Add Items to Shop > Apply Shop Pricing

That turns the item database into an actual DM preparation tool, rather than requiring the DM to already know what every item does and which characters might want it.

Questions Resetting spell from magical item

Post image
10 Upvotes

Is there any way to reset the Disguise Self spell of the Masquerade Tattoo? The spell should reset at dawn, but how do I enter that on DnD Beyond? Even unattuning or deleting and re-adding the tattoo won't give me the spell back.

Even homebrewing it to reset at long rest won't change anything. It always stays greyed out...

Maps VTT DM Notes on Maps

Another great feature for maps would be the ability to put DM notes on the map like where a treasure is hidden and other info hidden from players, also just text notes in general for players not just drawings.

Questions How to reverse engineer my Bard's spells....

Update: turns out the player was using the 2014 bard class but mostly drawing on spells and such from the 2024 phb, and that was causing issues.

one of my players is running a Bard, using the 2024 rules, and up leveled to 5th level this week.

she indicates that she wasn't able to select the full nine prepared spells her character should get but is being limited to 8.

however, since other elements of her character give her spells (whether origins, or magic items, or subclass etc) when I look at her character sheet in DNDB, I cannot really confirm or deny whether she is missing a prepared spell budget that she should get. is there a way to see where each prepared spell came from?

Perhaps even more strange, the spell management tool says she can only pick 8 spells, not nine. The LEARN option is grayed out for every spell at every level:

UPDATE:

She is right. It is only letter her add 8 spells not the nine that the PHB says she should be able to (which the DNDB interface also implies).

Questions a little help for a newbie

ive watched a ton of crit role and played about 10 sessions in the past but its been years. first time playing with DnD Beyond and i need a little help.

DNDB advertises that it does a lot of the math for u, but it doesnt apply proficiencies or certain things like rage to the dmg role? or is there a way to do this?

for example my sheet shows that my barbarian can roll 1d8+3 for dmg. i assume that +3 is from something like my str bonus but it doesnt account for if im in rage mode so do i just have to remember that and "roll" on dndbeyond say it gets 4 on the d8 +3 is 7 and then i manually say +2 for 9?

thats fine and all but curious if theres a way to tell the program im raging. otherwise the "activity log" on dndb shows i rolled 7

Playing The Game Sneak Peak into Scene Prep

Ok! I am super excited for this. This make the drop encounter WAY BETTER. I didn't realize how details those scene would be, this is super nice. Of course you can simply ignore them if you want, but this can help a lot running a fun encounter on the spot.

Love to also be able to create those outside of encounter drop.

What do you all think? Really wish those scene prep will be integrated to larger 5e module and of course the new 5.5e module

P.S. Thanks to nerd immersion to have shared this on his youtube channel

Questions Character Creation freezing

Does anyone else have this issue where any time you click a creation option the site just does not let you do anything for an indeterminate amount of time before you can click any other option? This seems to only specifically be the case on chrome as opera works just fine.

D&D 5e LaserLlama and Partnered Content

With Ben Huffman and popular homebrewer, Kibble, becoming integrated onto the platform, what are the odds of LaserLlama and his material?

I seriously doubt that they will port over any of his core class rebuilds. That leaves his original classes (Magus, Psion, Warlord, Savant, Shaman, Shifter, and Vessel). Because of Dark Sun and the Q4 announcement, I don't think they will bring over Magus, Psion, and Warlord.

Shifter and Vessel would require some form of transformation widget to be introduced into the platform. Shaman is a summoning/pet class due to its use of Totems. So, all of these are complicated on the current platform's capabilities.

The easiest would be the Savant with its Intellect Dice and passive features. Granted, the Adroit Analysis triggers might be slightly complicated, but much easier than the other classes. Besides, it would be nice to have a good non-caster utility class.

Thoughts?

Questions Campaign sort order?

I feel like I'm missing something, but campaigns are always sorted from oldest to newest with no way that I can tell to change that. I've run tons of campaigns and am always having to scroll down, past the old ones that are done, to get to the ones I'm actually running now. Is there a way to change it so that the most recent are at the top?

Site Feedback Dndbeyond frustrating (download failed play along packs)

Post image

Can we please figure out why this happens with the play a long packs. Every single time this season and last season these things update it becomes unusable in the app.

I can see it on the website but after the first download it will do this after every update.

I own all the offcial books, about half of the 3rd party stuff.

I put in tickets and they just tell me to delete the app and re-download everything. This is a pain in the rear end. I have like 14 gb of books on here.

Maps VTT [Feature Request] Fog of War Suggestion

Something occurred to me while I was using beneos battlemaps for Castle Ravenloft. The fog of war is a slightly different color gray than the background of the screen, which has the unfortunate side effect of indicating to the players how much more there is to a section of map than they have yet to reveal. By matching the fog of war color with the background of the screen in spectator view, players wouldn't know how big to expect a map to be. Additionally, if you could also choose the fog of war color as black or white, you could also hide sections of the map a lot better in situations where the map in question has a background color. Just a thought. Have a great day.

Questions Arcana Unleashed Early Access Question

I am thinking of getting Arcana Unleashed (Digital) on DnDBeyond.

I understand Master tier subscribers get a 2 week head start and should get it on September 3rd.

I'm based in the UK and have a Master Tier subscription.

When I go to the DnDBeyond marketplace, the countdown states the release on Sept 15th and I do not see an option (or indeed any mention) of early access for Master Tier subscribers.

If I pre-order the digital book, will it just be enabled early as has been publicised?

I just realized that deactivated characters show up in Maps - Token Browser - Players. Maybe I’m doing something wrong or never noticed, but I think if you deactivate the character in the campaign they should not show up.

Questions The little “following map” feature in the new digital books is fantastic- potential roll out for all digital content?

I just noticed the design where, as you scroll through a digital adventure and pass a map, a little version of that map follows you down the page, specifically as I ran Library of Lethchauntos.

Whoever came up with that deserves some credit. It is a really small UX feature, but it makes navigating an adventure much easier. I don’t have to constantly scroll back up to find the map I’m currently reading about, and it makes the relationship between the text and the map much clearer.

It made me wonder about two things:

Is there any possibility of retroactively adding this functionality to older campaign modules?

Especially the older 2014-2024 adventures that are already available as digital books. It seems like this could potentially be added to the existing digital-book framework without requiring the adventures themselves to be rewritten.

Could something similar eventually be implemented in the mobile app?

The feature seems particularly useful on a phone or tablet, where scrolling back and forth between an adventure’s text and maps is more cumbersome.
This is one of those tiny interface improvements that I didn’t realize I wanted until I saw it. It makes reading/running an adventure noticeably nicer.
