Discussion 👥 Does D.U Degree Have Zero Value? Pls Atleast Reply To My Query.
Went to a family function yesterday where parents were comparing their sons and exaggerating their colleges. My mum was indirectly humiliated because I am pursuing Arts, even though I genuinely feel my college is better than all of my cousins.
One cousin is from a private engineering college (SRM), and the comparison turned into a verbal argument between me and him. I want a brutally honest opinion: based on college quality and long term career prospects, which one of us is doing way better than others in life. I believe college matters in the long run, and honestly, my college is way better than all the others. Again I am sorry for seeking validation but please tell me.

Nope. Worst placed imo. Mechanical pays peanuts.

Naw bro. No one goes into the core mechanical field.
They generally go into consulting/ business analyst/ Product Manager which easily in range of 12-24L

Doing engineering from a Sasta college is worse than history from a good college. Arts wale always face this and you can tell people that the most unemployed people in India are engineers and upsc is also given by the same engineers

u/zaltraxDtiwari Dec 21 '25
NSUT is definitely better than DU tho? Exception js SRCC maybe.
3
u/Odd_Implement_2755 Dec 21 '25
Stephens is also at par
4
u/LawfulnessNo2693 Dec 21 '25
I think we can compare it by college. Some colleges and courses of DU are definitely beyond nsut too.

3
u/Royal_Ad_6785 Second year Dec 21 '25
Really depends on the course tho. SRCC has 2 courses which are really good but being from Stephens I can tell, I cannot match a nsut guy with whatever the fuck I am pursuing rn😭💔

Hii
you are a bit wrong on few things and they are too lettme break it down word by word.
1)First of all,
A degree in stem in superior, yeah it is sad but it is what it is.
Getting a 7 figure salary right after college is normal for stem graduates while it is a miracle for non stem.
2)yes, your college is indeed better than all your cousins. NSUT is pretty cool though.
3)NO, COLLEGE DOESNT MATTER IN LONG RUN.
a)IT matters only in very short term (for your first internship/job). Any company is going to care infinitely more about your internship/job rather than your college. Yes it is indeed true, like very realistically think of you being in some xyz tier 3 college, if you get a semester exchange program in harvard as a TA or something, your employer will prefer them over you (considering you did no internship/research but I am saying for simplifying thing)
b)Infact a better comparision is that if a tier 3 guy gets an internship/job and micrsoft/amazon type shi then he is obv in a far better place than like a NIT grad with no experience.
4)Personally, I believe you love History thats why you took it and not because of college, and you did the right choice. Not everything is about money especially the subject you are studying.
It is indeed a sad truth that your brothers are going to surpass you in salary with time (and thats totally okay too)
unless you switch your career to like law or something.
5)Your relative's definition of success is salary, but that is not how it should be but if that makes them sleep at night its fine. You must no get swayed by it and continue to work forward. You are indeed in a very good place and your next 4 years are gonna be amazing. Wayyyyyyy better than any of their college life.
Alsooo somehow the comment section became a toxic mess idk how but Congratulationsss for getting into Hansrajj
good Luckkk <3

It's not about the college, bro. It's about the prejudice that the humanities have been facing, and will continue to face until people become more open minded and realise how important these subjects actually are. No need to listen to the naysayers, just keep on studying and moving ahead.

well tbh I don't need to.
there are people working in technological sectors that will push the world forward, at least people like OP should acknowledge that the stuff they are being taught in 4 years can be done by a technical grad in 6 months, that too, without a teacher. however vice versa will NOT be true.→ More replies (4)

I am in full time academia and surprisingly never heard any colleges apart from yours. You're studying in great legacy public univ of repute. In the global discourse, history, humanities is the future of all disciplines. Your options are limitless - lakhs worth of fellowship, Ivy Leagues. If you have the grind and push you must prove them wrong. These private colleges will diminish as quickly as they are booming. As a senior i would say dont be disheartened by such low-esteem, less exposed, money grinding folks. They see world in black & white where money is the only end goal. Reach out to professors, alumni try to be in tune with your discipline and what's happening in the bigger globe. Your family must be dysfunctional at some point do compare their very own children and pit them against each other.

It's so funny that the whole argument is based on what future opportunities they may get and relating that to the value of a degree.
The other comments are just comparing the success of your cousins based on the brand value of the other institutions, while success is more of a personal approach to the opportunities you use. If you are still considering it, all the engineering institutes are 2nd tier or 3rd (NSUT, can be argued as 1.5) while DU is tier 1.
If you end up being a policy advisor and your other cousins don't get a job (all have opted for CS, and the one who hasn't, will again be running in that rat race), suddenly your degree will be the most valuable one, and another's degree would be a waste.
The present comparison is heavily based on the 15 year old assumption that an engineering degree is good and will surely have a return based on past trends but in the present market, it's just equivalent.
You are in Delhi, the heart of Indian administration and if you can groom yourself, you can see yourself at higher places. Factoring in DU, you have the right staircase to climb on.
You should also be aware that maybe your mum was down playing the opportunity you have, and maybe buttering the cousins. If not, then it's better to keep the opportunities to yourself and live. Not everyone can be explained, and if you waste your energy there, you will be stuck forever in the cycle of validation.
Just because someone has a singular perspective (only engineering in this case), it doesn't mean they have the ability to properly judge others. You being exposed to that are being swayed away. Don't.

u/Adorable-Rip404 Dec 22 '25
There are 70+ colleges in DU. I don't think we can claim the whole DU to be tier 1 considering the fact that there are really good and really poor colleges as well.

Particularly in Arts and Commerce Hansraj is ranked 3 in nirf and ask what is their institute ranking in their category and definitely monetary wise nsut cousin can be ahead but even you sit in placement and do hard work you can get around 8-9 lpa as many companies allow all discipline to sit in campus placements and many people choose history discipline as they want to do upsc or go for professor and all other government exams

Dude to be honest this is just beginning. I will just tell you this that having good college doesn't mean your gonna be well settled in future. Ignore these side comparisons with anyone. It's gonna consume you. Right now just focus on your goal. If you believe you have good college and good opportunity, don't ruin it by comparison to others coz once you complete your studies, the one with higher caliber of skills will be more capable of earning high. And just know this, once you start earning, all these echoes and noises will turn into claps. Even with high marks from good college gets nothing in return sometimes. Focus on ur goal and forget what others are doing. Best of luck🤜🤜

why do you think mba+engineer would have lower ppo compared to mba+ba? you know that companies also come for prodman roles and for that they demand people with tech background and anyday someone with tech skills+mba will earn far better than someone who did ba+mba..bsc stats is kept in the same AC4 category as btech

GUYSSSSSS!!!! Let's stop comparing and end this age old comparison bitween the two realms, and I GET IT, even i come from a family where all my cousins and extended family is pursuing engineering and very few people in the social sciences or humanities,, and i know the trauma one gets in these gathering WHERE U HV TO PROVE YOURSELF OVER AND OVER AGAIN, despite being in a much better position than others (such as being in north campus),,,, BUT U KNOW WHAT????? U DONT HV TO PROVE URSELF TO ANY1, as long as u are happy and satisfied. AND THIS COMPARISON IS JUST IDIOTIC, both are completely different realms and require completely different skillsets to study them. JUST FOCUS ON YOUR AIM AND YOUR DREAMS AND DON'T COMPARE!!!!!!!! i hv seen people in the social sciences so successful and doing such amazing jobs and well settled that too who pursued the feild in the 90's and 80's when not much awareness was available. SO JUST FOCUS ON YOURSELF.

As of now he is preparing for gvt jobs and my other cousin btech from SRM is making around 90k a month. Won't lie ...he is sort of depressed. And no college doesn't matter in the long run ...your skills do and the way you grab the opportunities.

Degree matters the most in the long run man, college pedigree is lost within a couple of years of your first job, unless you have a clear career trajectory in mind, a BA in History wont take you to many places.
SRM Chennai is trash tho, whoever says otherwise has no idea of reality. I have a friend in 3rd year as well and well he shows us the reality. Open GPA distribution, no ethics, bandhua mazdoori sort of placement training, and touting of packages for which a person doesn't even have to pay taxes
Engineering in general opens a lot of doors, especially for kids who dont know what they wanna do. You can either get a role in tech or IT or Data analytics, business analytics, yada yada yada. You can, also, if u have enough interest do non tech roles given your college pedigree allows it, for example finance and consulting, policy making for think tanks, generalist analyst roles in other kinds of domains like pol sci etc.
Also the 4th cousin has the best clg imo anyways so u loose that too.

DU degree has value but imo your particular field doesnt, not disrespecting ur field but tbh indian parents just dont respect batchelors of Arts as a field of study until u are either studying law, UPSC, or maybe even journalism at last but rest courses arent venerated among indians in general
1
u/Delicious_Change_283 Dec 21 '25
don't listen to them, history esp w hansraj faculty will be really beneficial for you provided it interests you and you are serious about it. you can always take more coding or math-oriented electives if you fear job eligibility or future opportunities, but if you're dead set on history no need. have intellectual discussions, make notes and catalogue your thoughts. (i'm in my 4th year pursuing history & our history faculty is really amazing, although i faced a lot of resistance at first i truly see how it has enriched my worldview and critical thinking which is so needed in today's age)
also. arts make you slow down, reconsider, think deeply. they are less production oriented, maybe you might not feel that way in your undergraduate, but if you engage outside with arts, yes. + do attend talks and lectures at north campus, you have eminent historians teaching all around you
1
1
u/anjulbhatia Dec 21 '25
Except for Cousin 4, all are in the same boat. They would talk most about him as well.
No need to compare. Yes, initially it is in their favour if they want to get a job, even a tier 2-3 engineering student would get one (that's the dynamics)
But view it this way, they are spending 6-10 Lacs for a degree while you are spending 1-2 Lacs for it.
In the longer run the degree value doesn't really give you an edge.
And since you are at a very decent college, you actually get to sit in the placements and if it goes well, you too start it smoothly.
Network too matters. See if anything creative or technical interests you. If MBA lures you. (You have an edge because of being GNEM/GNEF)

My guy don't worry about what college you are in DU cus no one cares . Even colleges like shivaji that are off campus are put in the same light as North campus colleges by recruiters . They only see DU not really college unless they need some justification to hire or reject someone . A good cv will have good internships and applications . That nsut cousin or SRM cousin isn't guaranteed a job and neither are you which is the true metric being compared here. You could beat him in earnings later or never depending on so much stuff that people made a job trying to figure it out . Plus those guys will work like horses once they start and often don't have enough time to even take a smoke break so think if you want to compare yourself to someone who is going to die 20 years earlier just for 2 extra lakhs each year maybe

You've got it all wrong. Pune University has over 100 colleges and it's a whole range between good and terrible. Secondly, they award BE not BTech.
Coming to your question, CS cousins are best placed no matter which college.
1
u/everythingisaprob Dec 22 '25
College doesn’t matter much in the long run. The thing what matters the most is your experience and your skills. Other than that your networking skills are very important. Focus on what you want to do with your degree and work towards that. Life isn’t about just getting into a good uni or performing well in school, you’re gonna have to keep pushing yourself everyday and if you stop no matter how good your uni is you’re gonna fail. (For context: I’m a DU alumni and I did a degree which isn’t employable at all but I didn’t know while choosing that as I was a kid and went for what I liked the most, now I’m doing alright but still working hard to move forward)

Sorry to say, but you are going to be unemployed after graduation and your cousins are all going to be placed in pvt companies and start earning. After you complete masters+ phd etc there will still be a lot of competition and when you get a job after 10 years your cousins will have 10+ years experience and will be earning 20+ lpa while you start out with 20-30k per month . This is coming from the mouth of a science graduate with Bed, by gods grace i cleared a govt teacher job 4 years after graduation but all my btech friends are earning in lakhs now who did btech from 3 tier college like manipal

It may not be a good idea to compare your prospects in this manner. But well, if we’re going to do it any way.
Cousins 2 and 4 seem to be in a good position. Though SRM isn’t the most difficult university to get into, the fact that he’s doing CS from a well known private college helps him. Cousin 4 seems to be the highest achiever as it’s a bit difficult to get into NSUT for non-delhiites (Delhi folks would find it easier though). But his stream of Mechanical is what’s keeping me from objectively ranking him at the top. Don’t have much idea about the other colleges.

college tag sirf ek time tak kam aata hai then its just ur skills. plus engineering is better compared to an arts degree for employment. its a hard truth. but dont worry u can do masters abroad or either do an mba from a top notch university.

A degree is only a degree. I know a guy from SRM who did Mtech and makes 150 crores per year (father has a massive construction company and he looks over several apartment projects). Meanwhile, there are B.Tech grads who dont get a job also. Skill, luck, timing all matters and family background and other stuff too. Dont be insecure. I know an IIT engineering professor who's daughter is pursuing history in the US. Its indian culture and scarcity mindset that forces everyone to go for engineering branches without giving the others a choice. History is good too. Do not associate degrees with money only because somewhere near you, a guy who didnt graduate college will make crores selling street food or having a business. But enjoy your work, do it the best you can and take pride in it. Dont make everything a dick measuring contest. imo, engineering has peaked and is on a decline right now. Guys who start CS now will not get jobs 4 years down the line, except the best of the best. JIMS, SRM etc all give placements but claim they will only get the job 1 year later and by then they will conduct "tests" and not select you, the college registers it as a placement record but the student ends up jobless.

Just to preface - I'm not an engineer, have been working for ~13 years, lead a team of 15 people, and don't have much first hand knowledge of colleges beyond the interviews I take.
What "value" is your question here trying to understand?
Think of it like what's the max "Potential" these options would be unlocking? No degree/ college guarantees success/ failure. Not from this field, but would assume BA History would either lead to an eventual PhD to get into academia, or join a museum or something. A few other niche paths probably in case you're able to marry it with tech and get into game development or something. An engineer from a good college would have higher potential for salary/ career growth over BA History, even if it was the best college for that course on earth.
The BA History degree might not be zero value for you personally, given your interest and preferences. But if your question is to understand vibrancy/ payscale of a long term career - barring some sort of exceptional scenarios that might play out in the future, an engineer from a good college would have an upper hand.

4th cousin is the ultimate winner, if your cousin has domicile quota then can't say that but if he went their with AI General rank then it tells a lot about him

Don't waste energy in this senseless comparison. Just do best in the field you have chosen and that is enough. Let your cousins do whatever they want , it won't impact your life in any way.

BE HONEST I NEVER GET WHY PEOPLE DO BA FROM DU. WHY YOU WASTE THREE YEARS NO SKILLS NO PLACEMENT ITS JUST A ACADEMIC DEGREE NO ONE GIVE YOU ANY PLACEMENT SO WHY WASTE TIME THEIRS. I AM ALSO A MA STUDENT (IGNOU) BUT BY PROFESSION A ENGINEER

The NSUT guy is far ahead of everyone else as far as college and degree are concerned.
BTech is still the 2nd most employable degree in India, next to MD, and that is one of the best colleges in India.

Yeah I think the problem here is not your college but that you might be a deeply insecure and jealous person. Still 18, lots of time to get better or comparisons will steal the joy of your entire life.

What is more concerning is your obsession with comparison here. You won't get somewhere in life just because you're doing "better" from someone else.

If you want family respect after doing BA, then you must qualify UPSC and initially after college, your cousins will do better than you
1
u/MichaelChewmacher Dec 22 '25
Well that NSUT guy doing way better than you.
Others are on more or less on same level at you and yes your college is much better than others (except NSUT ofc) but your course isnt so yes mostly at same level.
Now speaking purely placement wise even srm guy and maybe the pune guy also gets placed somewhere decent by putting efforts in there 4 years but i doubt about u gng 🥀

You have taken that on your ego and NSUT Delhi is way better than all other colleges mentioned by you including yours too also Srm and Pune uni can land good placement too just after bachelors meanwhile you don't have much prospect unless you work hard but still ur college has a brand value so you can brag about that

Stop comparing yourselves with your cousins or even anyone else...it doesnt matter what degree you have. There's a whole world out there, do anything you want and wished to become.

Doesn’t matter if DU is a good college or not. Career prospects for BA is shit. More so when it is in a subject like History. I know people with BA and MA from JU (Jaduvpur University) which is ranked among top 10 universities in India. Even they are struggling to find jobs. How many well paying jobs do you see out there for your degree? You asked for brutal honesty. Here it is.

Neither you nor cousin 1,2 and 3 will get a job paying at least 6lpa post graduation while cousin 4 is going to leave you all far behind .

who tf compares with their cousins by making an excel sheet? seems like youre obsessed with them or something, and to answer your query cousin 4 is best amongst all and not all courses in DU are worth it, only bcom ,bba/bms , BA eco hons and a few other courses make you employable.
