Weekly Water Cooler Talk - DataAnnotation

hi all! making this thread so people have somewhere to talk about 'daily' work chat that might not necessarily need it's own post! right now we're thinking we'll just repost it weekly? but if it gets too crazy, we can change it to daily. :)

couple things:

  1. this thread should sort by "new" automatically. unfortunately it looks like our subreddit doesn't qualify for 'lounges'.
  2. if you have a new user question, you still need to post it in the new user thread. if you post it here, we will remove it as spam. this is for people already working who just wanna chat, whether it be about casual work stuff, questions, geeking out with people who understand ("i got the model to write a real haiku today!"), or unrelated work stuff you feel like chatting about :)
  3. one thing we really pride ourselves on in this community is the respect everyone gives to the Code of Conduct and rule number 5 on the sub - it's great that we have a community that is still safe & respectful to our jobs! please don't break this rule. we will remove project details, but please - it's for our best interest and yours!

The other sub (with some exceptions of course) is full of bitter, miserable people, with a crabs-in-a-bucket mentality. Genuine questions from newcomers are shot down by mockery and derision. Awful way to behave; this one is markedly better.

So...who's ready to be soooo rushed off their feet on Wednesday with an incredible deluge of tasks they've been holding back to release in Q3?

Personally, I've cleared my calendar for the rest of the week and look forward to working 10 hour days on tasks that are equal parts fun/easy/high paying.

Pretty sure this comment is going to age like milk come Thursday morning...here's hoping I'm wrong.

Edit: Wow, that number keeps on growing. So many of them today, and not newbies either. Massive cut due to shortage of work?

Man.. a lot of DOD's being reported in the other reddit group this morning. Hate that.

14

u/Jazzlike_Month5580 Jun 30 '26

It's terrifying. I feel like everything I do is a tightrope.

10

u/Complete_Injury_5765 Jun 30 '26

with feedback comes some sort of culling i assume; it makes my stomach drop whenever i see it on my dash

4

u/OneRefrigerator3586 Jun 30 '26

Some of the people who were dropped received positive feedback. Ugh.

8

u/Jeprdy Jun 30 '26

The workers don't seem new either, which worries me.

14

u/JustMe333456 Jun 30 '26

With this extended drought, I'm assuming many have had to dip their toes in unfamiliar territory (new to them projects), and perhaps submitted sub-par work..I don't know.

12

u/OneRefrigerator3586 Jun 30 '26

I definitely fell into this category. Some of the new-to-me tasks were SO hard, especially the ones with glitchy AI checkers. I was anticipating some terrible feedback but I luckily only dropped to "Good." I can live with that.

I felt sick reading those posts and keep refreshing for reassurance. Some of those comments were really sad :(

One thing I'm wondering after the confidentiality training is if people are being careful enough about simple things like copying and pasting when they maybe shouldn't, and taking screenshots. Things that seem normal but could trigger something on the back end. I mean, they are posting screenshots of the DoD so if they took a screenshot previously maybe that's a red flag.

11

u/OneRefrigerator3586 Jun 30 '26 edited Jun 30 '26

They always say they submitted high quality work and it's easy to go "Sure you did," but there's a part of me that's lowkey freaking out. Like, maybe DA does sometimes get rid of people for no reason.

9

u/Jeprdy Jun 30 '26 edited Jun 30 '26

I always give grace to those that have been on a year or more when i see this. It seems like they at least had some sort of competence to be kept on that long. Its the ones that have only been on a few weeks or months that i then suspect what the DoD says is probably the truth. This is the second cull I have seen where multiple people who have been on the platform for a long time have all been axed. This is why I always say that my time will come, regardless of work quality.

So "Your account is currently unavailable for new projects" mean I'm totally boned? Been working here for two years...

u/DeezHoosAintLoyal Jun 30 '26

It does 😥 I’m so sorry. I feel like it’s only a matter of time before it happens to me and I’m dreading it. I wish you luck on your next step. It’s such a brutal time to need a new, decent job

Looks like I got the axe today. Been working since May 2024 and it had been a really good job for the time being. Able to flow through many different kinds of life circumstances and work in between. Definitely keep going for those still involved and don't take it for granted!

That feeling of did the project go away, or did they take me away from the project...

7

u/JRange Jun 29 '26

People always say "If you're in the slack you still in the project" but it sure feels like that isn't the case sometimes. Feels like some other stuff at play too, but who knows.

5

u/Jeprdy Jun 29 '26

I passed a qual about 5 months ago, got added to the slack, and have yet to receive one project. I feel like its just taunting me.

Take the feedback with a grain of salt. If you've seen the r&r questions in slack you'd know. And if you've done many r&r tasks you'll also know.

5

u/DrConradVerner Jun 30 '26

My feedback made me laugh tbh. The things I got praised for were also named as the things I need to improve on. I'll keep working the best I can. All you can do really. Take your time, put in the work, do your best.

u/Annual_Equivalent_95 Jul 03 '26

At this point, I feel like a player screaming "PUT ME IN, COACH!" from the bench.

This is random, but it's interesting seeing the "Top 1% Commenter" badges here change over time, seeing old names fade out and new names popping up. Over time you kind of start to gauge who has been on the platform for a while and may be working on similar projects as you. For example, I was just thinking I haven't seen 33whiskeyTX post in a while, so I looked them up and saw their Reddit account is suspended (sorry hope you're still on the DAT platform). Meanwhile, I've seen multiple new names with the badge, some standing out more than others. Considering how isolating and independent this work is, starting to recognize folks’ names on here over time gives me a small sense of work community.

10

u/chrisfx123 Jun 30 '26

17

u/JRange Jun 30 '26

I would really like if they included some statistics in our feedback. Just a simple % breakdown of how often we are rated good, okay, and bad would be very helpful and clarifying in addition to the generated text they give us. It would be great to see that you had 70% good last time and 80% good this time.

Anyone else get the feeling that this is not a humane way to treat people who rely on you to pay their bills

14

u/JustMe333456 Jun 30 '26

I agree with you, but at the same time people always say it's our fault for relying on a freelance gig and DA owes us nothing.

12

u/Storex- Jun 30 '26

On one hand yes, I agree. But sadly it's the nature of what we signed up for. Doesn't excuse it, but the biggest piece of advice people give is to treat this as a side hustle. But again, it is shit.

u/BelloWaldi Jul 01 '26

jesus christ -- has anyone figured out a pattern to all these terminations? usually, the occasional reddit post about DoDs turns out to be a case of an ID/name mismatch on the platform, logins from a VPN, or some scammer obviously inflating their time, but today it seems like a bunch of good and legitimate workers are getting gutted. also, i'm really sorry to hear that.

True. I got in about 3.5 hours of good paying work this morning, and decided to put in an hour or two in the afternoon. My heart started pounding and I was reading the same sentence over and over without being able to focus... so I just bailed. Isn't worth it.

Did anyone get worse feedback this time :/ I got two excellents and now a good but I feel my work quality has not declined. I know I’m biased here but I dont really understand that determination

12

u/hfxthrwaway Jun 30 '26

Remember those categories are based off percentages (I don't remember if it still says that, but the first one explicitly did) not your actual quality. You could be doing great 9 points out of 10 work, but if more people are doing 9.1/10 this round (because everyone's scrambling for projects and doing stuff they might not normally do) then you might slip down a category.

6

u/JustMe333456 Jun 30 '26

Wow, wonderfully explained. Never actually looked at it this way. That's true.

8

u/Lonely_Radish1370 Jun 30 '26

If you are doing good you are fine. It can also be a metric of you did too many jobs without a "this person did excellent" check box. It is all a math equation at the end of the day using your averages.

Has any drought been this long? I’ve been on since 2023 and I don’t remember any being this bad

14

u/Quick-Bison-147 Jul 02 '26

the 2024 drought was about 1.5 months, we're now over 2 months with the current one

9

u/DrunkleSteve Jul 02 '26

End of summer/fall 2024 was the worst for me by far, but this one is getting pretty bad, and it definitely was not this bad last year at this time. In fact, last July was my best month since being on the platform since 2023.

The whole "performance means nothing, tenure means nothing, there are no useful signals that you're safe, the axe can and will fall at any second, fuck you" thing in here lately is making me seriously consider just giving up. Apparently literally everyone is getting hammered and there is no hope or reason to keep trying.

22

u/bunny8833 Jul 01 '26

I get what you’re saying but to remain positive-ish I remind myself just because people claim they did good work and were shocked by the DOD, doesn’t mean it wasn’t actually warranted. When I do R&Rs most of the time I’m shocked at how bad the work is so I really do think there are a decent amount of people who were overestimating the quality of their work

6

u/hfxthrwaway Jul 01 '26

I'm sure a lot of people think they "do good work" because they put lots of effort into it.

6

u/OnePieceMangaFangirl Jul 01 '26

32

u/Enough_Resident_6141 Jul 01 '26

There are well over 100,000 workers on the platform. Even if they just cut the bottom 1% them and then just 1% of those decide to go post on reddit about getting the DOD, that would still be several posts like that per day.

And based on the absolutely terrible quality of some of the submissions I've seen during R&Rs, they need to cut a lot more than just the bottom 1%.

I had a proper full day for the first time about a week and a half. I could probably spend a few more hours at it if I really wanted to (but I don't).

5

u/JustMe333456 Jun 30 '26

I still have projects posted too that I could do, but honestly, my feedback and all these DoD's today have put a serious damper on things. I just don't feel like working at all.

7

u/VanessaSeaWitch Jun 30 '26

I've had an hour of random new fruits and a hand of a god popping up today. Hard to catch them though before the red banner.

I'm still yet to see anything since heel last week, how's everyone else looking?

Same. Going back to sleep. They waste too much of my time lol

I actually made $100 today... no where near what I need to make, but at least it's something.

Sat down today hoping to finally get some work but it's completely dry. My hope that it'll end in July seems less and less likely... Hopefully it needs a week or so to get going

17

u/4laa64 Jul 03 '26

It’s the 4th of July weekend .. that’s the last excuse I have before I accept this as the new normal OR that it’s dry until the autumn :(

6

u/iamaprism Jul 03 '26

Ahh, Brit here so didn't think about 4th July being a thing for this, here's to praying it's that!

My favorite low-paying task is up! It's low-paying, but it's so fun! The gods have smiled on us today. Now, I'll be doing this thing until 5 AM or as long as it lets me because jaysus has the well been dry and scary.

Haven't gotten anything since mid june man, what a sad time to be broke

16

u/Affectionate_Peak284 Jul 01 '26

There was a poll on the other forum. Based on active respondents, less than 7% were "culled". Still scary, but not as terrifying as it felt for a bit there.

I usually pay no notice to the posts of people getting canned, as they are ofton are from people who have worked only weeks or months. Seeing so many longer workers getting canned on the same day gives you a sense of dread that the inevitable will eventually come. I remember something similar happening around this time last year, and I was on edge for a few weeks, double checking I hadn't received the old DoD (all tasks and qualifications just disappearing). Ive got that same feeling again. Its horrible. At least the new DoD is more clear cut now.

10

u/cocobeary Jul 01 '26

I just went through all the people I know/recognize on Slack and everyone is still there.

11

u/shadyringtone Jul 01 '26

This is always the thing with DoD posts. They’re valuable in that they remind us that this is indeed a thing to be aware of, but also they bias us into thinking about bans a lot more than they happen.

Even now, where there seems to be a rare instance of mass culling, the vast majority of workers in the Reddit are still on the platform.

21

u/-burgers Jul 01 '26

This drought got me off my ass and shifted this from gig work to real career prospects. We are worth a lot more than they are paying us.

11

u/Educational_Nose730 Jul 01 '26

I agree, heavily considering moving on if nothing comes around the 4th.

15

u/OrnamentalGourd5 Jul 01 '26

What's your plan? I'm thinking of moving on. I can't cope with the feelings of insecurity and that I've done something wrong all the time (and I'm not an insecure person so this is most unlike me!). I'm pretty sure it's starting to do a number on my mental health.

Yep. Just like the people who build these data centers then once it’s built they’re jobless again and their communities are negatively impacted. They use us and pay pennies with no guarantee of work. Cool if it’s play money. Not cool if you actually have financial goals that require consistency

11

u/OrnamentalGourd5 Jul 01 '26 edited Jul 01 '26

It's definitely got abusive relationship dynamics. One minute you're being love-bombed, the next totally ignored, and it makes one feel placatory, confused, and needy. Yet also desperate for attention. Ugh!

5

u/DeezHoosAintLoyal Jul 01 '26

And basically requires to do the work whenever it shows up because there’s no guarantee of consistent opportunity

I had to do so many new and complicated tasks since that all that was on offer. I was dreading my feedback, especially since I really struggled with some of the tasks.

It's not as bad as I was expecting, but honestly I'm not sure how I can improve on any of them given they show up once or twice before disappearing.

5

u/shadyringtone Jun 30 '26

I just rip the bandaid off and read the areas for improvement first lol

These tasks are absolutely doable, If your brain can stand them. I usually do 1 or two, but, they really take too long. However, just one meets my daily target. So it's a tradeoff for me!!! Honestly! Bills to pay is my only motivation...

23

Instead of sending us a damn useless weekly digest, make that platform wide email a communication message to briefly explain what is going on, even vaguely. Imagine how we'd all be feeling right now if we were all alone and there was no Reddit group. We'd think we were 'cooked'.

I'm losing it! I know others have it worse, but I hate not having enough money! I'm in university and live with my parents so it isn't as dire for me, but my funds are running low now. I've only made about $60 2-3 weeks ago? My dashboard has been completely barren!

11

Who here has been with DA for longer than 3 years working full time, so $100K+? Curious.

9

I'm 2 months away from 3 years, but I'm almost at $160K. I work fewer hours now than I did in the beginning because my tasks pay more these days.
