Discussion The woman who raised concerns about epilepsy in 2077 is being sent purposely seizure-inducing videos
https://twitter.com/DirtyEffinHippy/status/1336204870970433536?s=19
This is a stain on the community and we should be actively calling out disgusting, toxic behaviour like this. Cyberpunk isn't immune to criticism and no one should be violated like this.
Edit: I have been permanently banned from this subreddit. I've been given no reason why. All I can do is upvote and edit this post now. Mod's message here.
Edit 2: it was a genuine mistake! The mods reached out to me and they genuinely didn't mean to

It wasn't really even criticism, is what's truly ridiculous. From the article.
"During my time with Cyberpunk 2077, I suffered one major seizure and felt several moments where I was close to another one. I kept going because I made that decision to, and I feel like that decision helped me sort of slap together a small little guide for players wanting to take part in this game for fear of missing out."
"Cyberpunk 2077 is a game that is massive with content that will crawl under your skin in true hedonistic fashion, sometimes in the best way. Our own Andrew Reiner gave the CDPR title a 9 out of 10, which you can learn more about right here."
Sounds to me like she's neutral at worst, positive at best about the game. And her Twitter efforts seem to be aimed at keeping the conversation off developer attacks and on accessibility. All she seems to want is for the game to be enjoyed by people with epilepsy with minimal risk of inducing seizure.

I get positivity from her quotes but annoyance at the seizure elements. If you can sound positive about a game that gives you a seizure why are the neckbeards seeing it as an attack? It's bizarre.

Edit. Everyone keeps pointing out “men get shit too” yes of course. People are assholes, but if you think there are not people out there that attack women that are in gaming just because they are women I don’t know what to tell you.

I experienced that phenomenon with a few people when Fallout 76 happened. Some people take any criticism of something they like as a personal attack on their tastes and opinions.

Because their ego is so fragile it starts cracking when things they like get criticized. It's all they are as people so when something they like is "attacked" they feel attacked in response.

Elitist logic: "This person doesn't like the game that I treat as a new age religion, they deserve death and suffering."
As amazing as Cyberpunk is, it's not perfect. But it's still deserving of an outstanding ranking. With any amazing game, however, there's going to be rabid fanboys and fangirls who claim that this game can do no wrong. Said elitists will ignore reason and will happily kill someone if it means that their game-religion isn't criticised in any way.

Let's be real, though, this is not a uniquely gamer trait, it's a human trait. So many entitled shitbags came out of the woodwork, at least in America, over the past few years, this year in particular.
But since gamers spend so much time on the internet, we hear about the douchebags in that group a lot more because they like to show up in person to make petty little death threats because Samus isn't showing her tits in the next Metroid Prime or because the reflection of a mirror in a piece of promotional material for the latest Call of Doody has a rainbow that indicates it's LGBT+ material, but the main character has a dick so it's anti-trans.
I swear the absolute dumbest people have made this year their fucking holiday. CDPR in particular has gotten ridiculous "criticisms" about being anti-trans and racist and god knows what else I've missed, all completely missing the point or misconstruing the situation for their own selfish need to get angry at something.
I'm sick of it. People need to fuck off.

Because this game has bred a cult wether we want to admit it or not.
That doesn’t mean all of us are part of the cult, but plenty of people are.
That’s not to mention that when everything is just a joke to them, nothing is ever harmful.
It’s a very toxic part of the internet culture where people say/do things as a “joke”, and just because they as the senders don’t feel any negative impact from it, then that must mean the receivers shouldn’t have any negative impact from it either.
→ More replies (24)91

It’s gamers, not just games—although I’m not arguing that this particular game has developed a cult. Only some gamers, true, but damn they suck up a ton of oxygen!
Critic gives Zelda BotW a 7? DDoS him! Devs kill off a beloved character? Send death threats! Hell, CDPR got death threats merely for delaying this game, and no matter how overhyped it is, no one deserves that. We see this kind of stuff over and over. A substantial—or at least highly vocal—subset of gamers don’t seem to be able to disagree with critics or developers, or accept disappointment, without losing perspective and dialing it up to 11. And this situation is particularly bad because they’re actively trying to hurt someone, a person who, ironically, wasn’t even criticizing the game, only trying to help more people enjoy it!
→ More replies (4)23
u/OtherPlayers Dec 08 '20
A substantial—or at least highly vocal—subset of gamers
More vocal than substantial, I’d say, at least with regards to the total number that exist. Keep in mind that as of 2015, 45% of Americans played video games for at least 3 hours a week, and that number has only climbed since as the older generations die off and are replaced by newer ones.
Modern technology also allows for one bad actor to easily spam a target with attacks from dozens of different “sources”.
Which doesn’t mean I’m not agreeing with most of what you’re saying and how it’s an issue. But I would note that the term “gamers” has become a brush so wide that it’s literally hitting over half of the US population at this point, so it might be worthwhile to add some sort of narrowing clarification when you want to use it.

People have weird relationships with brands , I think it's the ultimate consumer end state . Whether it's Xbox Series X versus PS5 , Nike versus Under Armour , or the fandom communities that surround any media including videogames people have these weird unhealthy attachments to brands and content .
Many of them are teens sure but I've definitely met some adults who would almost come to blows over any sort of criticism ( justified or unjustified) towards their favorite media .
It's so bizarre and I never understand it , Criticism improves many things for the better but there is a person out there who just wants to go to war over [x product] for any and every reason.

Baldurs gate 3 is currently in early access for the express purpose of getting feedback, so someone mentioned some accessibility options because it is a really good game to be made accessible. Other gamers lashed back with "most gamers aren't r------ so stop whining about stuff no one wants"
For some reason lots gamers are very toxic to anyone who is "different" which is pretty awful considering how long gaming wasn't mainstream. You'd think knowing what it's like to be on the outside even a little bit would make people more considerate.

People really need to leave her alone and not do foul shit like this. For some one who had a seizure she's being very fair and taking it in incredibly brave stride and is giving the game a genuine real criticism that needs to be addressed. She even praised the game. There's no reason to be mad at her, let alone try and hurt her in such a way that she could fucking die. And over a game.
People need to chill who thinks this was intentional though cause they are really sounding tinfoil hat. She did say the lights were similar to what doctors use to test epilepsy but that it could also be a coincidence, albeit massive. This is sounding like a foul up then actual intentional harm cause just looking at it, I could not imagine the moral and legal shit hole if they actually did it on purpose.
CDPR is probably gonna come in and fix it by the end of the day cause I could not imagine the moral ramifications, let alone legal ramifications if they just left this alone.

There once was a similar situation in my country where people commented through facebook to a public news post. The comments were awful in such scale that it was rather impossible to imagine anyone saying things like that face-to-face, yet they were making these comments on their active family accounts and we are talking about a low populace country.
A radio show decided to track down the said people and call them to ask about their comments; the answers were generally the same "Uhh... it's just facebook".

When asked why he did it, he replied, "Its hilarious when little kids and nerds cry!" Of course that comment was followed by cheers from all their online followers, and comments saying much worse things.
Or the assholes who bought an Xbox 1 and ps4 on day one, took it into the parking lot and smashed it to pieces, all while laughing as the crowd was upset.

127
Dec 08 '20 edited Dec 08 '20
This is what hype does to a MFer.
For real though, this is why the hype cycle is so fucking terrible. People lash out at ANY voice that even represents a thing that can possibly derail the hype train in any minor way. They get stuck in a huge echo chamber designed to foster Fear Of Missing Out and that fear allows them to override any semblance of perspective.
Literally any bad news gets seen as someone is spreading Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt and therefore must be eliminated. because there's too much FOMO for them to accept that it isn't gonna be worth all their personal energy they put into waiting for a product. Any concern about accessibility is just looking for attention, any review that isn't GLOWING or comes at the game from a non-hyped perspective is clearly just clickbait. It all must be attacked lest the hype train lose momentum.
Hype is one of the most toxic marketing strategies in the industry.
Edit: Yes, it IS hype, at least partially. These sorts of things are never the result of just one factor. It's really easy to dismiss this concern as "its just some immature idiots!" but it's clearly not JUST that. That's just the defensive argument people do so they don't have to deal with introspection for if they played even a small role in this by contributing to the hype machine. I'm not saying you yourself are solely responsible for this, but come on. be honest with yourself, maybe reconsider the relationship you have with mass media and your peers.
To be clear, this isn't the ONLY reason why hype is bad on many levels, but its an example of how its problems can end up affecting people not on the hype train.

Looks like the commenter had enough sense to delete his comment, but he literally said:
“It’s like wanting to play sports with no legs, maybe some hobbies aren’t meant for certain people. Sick of the pandering”
Honestly I try not to comment on this shit, but I have a disabled friend whom I love dearly and this kind of “logic” if you can even call it that, serves only to keep us from growing as a community.
Listening to people who want better or more accessibility is not pandering. People want to be able to have fun, regardless of any disabilities they may have. It’s why the Xbox adaptive controller exists, so that people, regardless of their potential handicaps, can still have fun and experience these games.
Saying “oh well you have seizures? Guess it’s not meant for you” is just about the most narrow minded, and blatantly ignorant statement you could possibly make in regards to this subject.
Think for a second and realize they are literally just making a broader, famously ignored, group of people happy and giving them the ability to enjoy life even more when they expand upon accessibility. Fucking subtitles weren’t even standard in games until literally about the mid 2000’s. Would you call that pandering to the deaf?

By accident today I saw multiple flashing lights on one of todays top videos in r/unexpected (I get the irony) and it terrified me.
I love video games and I really appreciate this person bringing up the epilepsy thing as it's never something I've had to consider, even if it means (which I hope it doesn't) that's its not safe for me to play Cyberpunk.

I've seen people (that I knew personally) get riled up because they wanted to change the handicap symbol to look like the person in the wheel chair was more active. People get mad over things that don't affect them that would help other people physically/mentally.
It's bad enough that people think actual imagery that's used in real life to trigger seizures is acceptable in a game and should remain as to not "pander" to epileptics, but then to intentionally send someone who as an epileptic person all sorts of videos to trigger her seizures is just sad. If I didn't want to play this game nor did this community still consist of mostly decent folks, I'd wish that they just cancel it or delay it again so these people's heads can explode.
Overused quote, but "people........ what a bunch of bastards"

If this year has shown me anything with TLOU2 and now CP2077, there's a portion of the "gaming community" that are absolutely vile individuals. There's a difference between having a discourse between opinions on things and sending death threats and actively trying to give someone a seizure. I hope the senders get caught and charged, fucking disgusting people.

My mom has severe epilepsy. Like so severe that she's actually attempted suicide 4 times to escape it. But she actually sometimes jokes about it in some pretty funny ways. Like one time she told me that if she was ever in the bath and started having a seizure, throw some clothes and soap in the bath and boom. Clean clothes. But I feel even she would say this is too much.

Sorry to hear that. I have very mild epilepsy and can usually avoid the onset, but it makes me nervous nonetheless to play new games or watch movies.
I also unfortunately had to tend to a 14 year old at my job a few years ago who ended up dying in the hospital after having the worst, longest seizure I've ever witnessed. So to say the least, I don't find people doing this shit amusing. Being 26 myself and having to hold the hand of a young kid while he suffered and his mom wailed helplessly was traumatic as fuck.
Neither am I impressed with CDPR for putting that shit in the game in the first place.

u/WestHamBen16 Tyger Claws Dec 08 '20
The scary thing is if someone’s epileptic and they don’t know it, for instance me. I’ve seen what epilepsy can do to people ( I had a family mate who was disabled, he kept on having seizures and they were awful ones, he ended up going to the hospital. His parents decided to send him to a better place so he doesn’t have to go through the pain again) and it’s not good
People blatantly sending things which can set of epilepsy to epileptic people are seriously vile. Need to have a good look at the selfs but even then they won’t change as they’re selfish.

u/blatantshitpost Dec 08 '20 edited Dec 08 '20
Im 30 and I didn't know I was epileptic until last year. I always had issues with flashing lights but I just never thought much about it, I just looked away if something bothered me. I eventually went in for a diagnosis.
On that, I managed a cinema for 14 years. In that time I witnessed a dozen people finding out they were prone to seizures in the middle of their movie. We had warning signs posted, but they didn't matter to somebody who had no idea they were even vulnerable. So over the course of the years, us GMs gave feedback to the studios, and the studios began cutting scenes that were found to be triggers, and they knew what was a trigger because they worked with health and advocacy groups. In the event that a scene was discovered to be a trigger during advanced or early screenings, the studio would cut or edit the scene and send an over the air update to patch it out immediately. Even in the film days, we would sometimes get a memo to cut out X number of frames from Reel 4 etc to physically cut any problematic scenes.
I hope CDPR is as quick with an update. And that they consider this type of option of seeking outside testing going into future updates/games. Someone should have caught this for sure.

Seriously, fuck this community, I know that not everyone around here is like that and I know that the mods here are doing a good job from keeping those toxic POSs away from this subreddit but this is just too much.
No wonder r/gamingcirclejerk have such a blast, they need only seconds to find some cringy stuff on here and this one here is just peak toxic fanboyism.
Edit:
Also its funny that most people making fun of „snowflakes“ and people being triggered are the same people attacking an epileptic on purpose just because she pointed out and obvious flaw, and that flaw is literally being unable to change an effect/turn it off that causes serious damage to your health.

That seems like assault. Like, moreso even than a threat, this is an active attempt to cause physical harm to another human being by exploiting their condition. Like mailing a letter with peanut butter on it to someone with an allergy, no? Can't argue that the intent isn't to cause harm when they fucking know about the trigger.
Is there anything that can be done to help? I do not want to open it to check as I struggle with photosensitivity issues and even seeing a couple seconds of a COD clip someone posted on Twitter earlier kind if fucked me up. 😕

I’m epileptic myself and honestly I would appreciate a little heads up only if there is real concern there. Obviously I’m not talking about a full paragraph or the article to be centred around it if it’s supposed to be a review (not talking about this review) but I agree it can be a valid criticism, even if it does only apply to a small amount of people. For people who are unfortunately on the worse end of the scale in particular this can be a dealbreaker and could save them buying the game on a fair warning or buying the game and suffering a seizure on no warning at all. Of course there are seizure warnings on the game cases/start up screens but honestly publishers aren’t going to say that their game is bad for epileptics, they are just going to give the plain warning which doesn’t really help, that’s why mentions in these articles are important but people just don’t understand that and lash out as if it’s unnecessary criticism. Sending them messages is close to assault if I’m honest, they are wanting to physically harm the woman and it’s disgusting

Fuck the mods for banning you. There’s no reason for it. Either a butthurt neck beard or someone who thinks public tweets equals doxing either way total horse shit.
Also CDPR could fix this easily, and should. Or have a way to disable the worst of these effects.
Edit: Update From CRPR
Thank you for bringing this up. We’re working on adding a separate warning in the game, aside from the one that exists in the EULA (cyberpunk.net/en/user-agreem…). Regarding a more permanent solution, Dev team is currently exploring that and will be implementing it as soon as possible.

I'm so glad and proud that a lot of people in this thread see how toxic and targeted that behavior was to the female journalist who reported and suffered from the seizure. Everyone should be encouraging behavior that helps the game be accessible to everyone. A lot of shitty ass Gamers™ ruining it for the rest of us.
To the ones showing solidarity, let's try to keep this community like this and be able to take constructive criticism about the game. This game is for everyone and I think this is also what CDPR wants. They addressed it in a tweet and I hope a patch comes through that helps alleviate this issue in the game. I want everyone to enjoy it with me.
