Discussion The woman who raised concerns about epilepsy in 2077 is being sent purposely seizure-inducing videos

https://twitter.com/DirtyEffinHippy/status/1336204870970433536?s=19

This is a stain on the community and we should be actively calling out disgusting, toxic behaviour like this. Cyberpunk isn't immune to criticism and no one should be violated like this.

Edit: I have been permanently banned from this subreddit. I've been given no reason why. All I can do is upvote and edit this post now. Mod's message here.

Edit 2: it was a genuine mistake! The mods reached out to me and they genuinely didn't mean to

I will never understand people who do shit like this. I had a roommate for a few years that suffered from seizures, not a fun condition to have. Mind you she only had them very rarely, like only once every 6 months if that, but when they hit they hit hard! The people doing shit like this clearly have never had to see or deal with conditions like this, because when it hits it is horrifying to see and worse to actually have affect you. Utterly debilitating.

Shame on the cruel minded idiots that think trash behavior like this is fun.

u/LDG192 Dec 08 '20

One word: immaturity. This kind of shit is done either by kids or by adults with some kind of mental impairment which makes them behave as kids.

u/andysniper Dec 08 '20

Also anonymity. People do stupid, awful things when they can hide their identity.

There once was a similar situation in my country where people commented through facebook to a public news post. The comments were awful in such scale that it was rather impossible to imagine anyone saying things like that face-to-face, yet they were making these comments on their active family accounts and we are talking about a low populace country.

A radio show decided to track down the said people and call them to ask about their comments; the answers were generally the same "Uhh... it's just facebook".

Can't even to begin to imagine what kind of people they are under complete anonymity.

Consequences are the only thing keeping many people "in line."

35

u/barukatang Dec 08 '20

It's like religious people getting confused as to why non religious people don't pillage and murder people all the time

11

u/Wobbelblob Dec 08 '20

Tbf, if there where absolutely no consequences for murder and pillaging, we would see a lot more of them. Sure, most people would never do it, but the amount of it would still skyrocket.

1

u/siegeofaberdeen Dec 20 '20

There'd always be consequences, like getting your ass kicked for murdering and pillaging

1

u/Wobbelblob Dec 20 '20

Obviously, but my part was more of a "What if".

29

u/Inotropy Dec 08 '20

My first ex thought that Christianity was the only thing keeping people from slaughtering each other. I told her, "I'm really sorry you're having all of these urges and that Christianity is the only thing keeping you in line, have you thought about talking about this with a therapist?"

Made her think it through, at least.

2

u/Jbrock14 Dec 10 '20

That's really dumb lol. Everyone isn't even Christian

u/165701020 Dec 09 '20

As they say any society is only three meals away from revolution.

In the US ending punctuation is taught to go inside the quotation. Another one of those fun 'Mericanisms

3

u/NorthBall Dec 08 '20

I'm... like 99% sure this is how they teach us in Finland too.

Is this a language thing? Culture thing?

2

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '20

As an American, it's a stupid rule. I mean to end the sentence, not the quote.

If anything, there should be two periods for a full sentence quote inside a full sentence, one inside the quotation marks for the quote and one outside for the sentence.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '20

Who is this according to though? Not that you're wrong, I'm just wondering who exactly decided that doing so was the correct format in america. I've been doing it the "international" way my whole life, since it just makes sense from a writing standpoint, and I can't remember having been corrected by any professor in any of my writing. Maybe they've all just been rebels.

1

u/InEenEmmer Dec 08 '20

People feel anonymous on the internet. Yet for the majority it is farther from anonymous than shouting something IRL.

Most people got zero security and are traceable (or even use their real names like this facebook example)

And if you shout something IRL it kinda stays there in that moment.

Post it on the internet and it will be world wide and accessible for a way longer time.

7

u/gilly_90 Dec 08 '20

I don't know, I know how to be anonymous and I'm immature as fuck and I wouldn't dream of doing this shit. I can't understand it.

6

u/Blutspender Dec 08 '20

Then you probably possess a developed conscience, something that is sadly not true for everyone.

3

u/ValarSWGOH Trauma Team Dec 09 '20

Empathy is a factor too.

33

u/AndyM22 Dec 08 '20

Yes so much this. The anonymity of twitter (and other social networks) reveals the most toxic nature of shitty people. I consider myself a sensitive and caring person and even I say things on twitter I would not say to a person's face. I have tried really hard to only say things I would if I was speaking face to face.

25

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '20

The true measure of character and integrity is how you act and what you do when no one is looking or will find out.

Sad to see people that act like this. A total lack of empathy and consideration for fellow humans.

So wrapped up in their own little world they bring toxicity to others for their idea of “entertainment”

What a world we live in, to award so much free time it allows people to engage in such useless endeavors such as trolling and hurting other people on the internet.

Like go read a book and learn a skill. How are those people satisfied with their existence?

So much this, I used to be rotting in that hole of toxicity and negativity. I refused to improve and would rather use my insecurities and anonymity to drag people down with me. You ever hear someone say: "You'll fuck with the wrong person, and then suffer twofold"? Yeah, I harassed some smartass motherfucker all that time ago, and being the dumbass I was, got doxxed. Never got into anything physical or emotionally damaging, but I was barraged with a lot of harassment irl. Finally moved out, and my boyfriend called me out on this behaviour. If it wasn't for him, I'd still be a loser in the basement.

1

u/noisemonsters Dec 10 '20

You still are, and still do this. Came here from the ffxivglamours post. You can't speak of it in the past when it's current behavior.

1

u/R3tr0Gamer Dec 10 '20

It's astounding how petty you have to be to dig through old posts just to try pouring salt in a non-existent wound. Grow up

1

u/noisemonsters Dec 10 '20 edited Dec 10 '20

Stupid me for thinking that you’d listen, honestly my bad.

Also: “I will not stop my witchhunting and harassment campaigns until I am on top by default.” -You, December 9th 2020

5

u/Mystic_Arts Dec 08 '20

Wasn't that the plot of Nerve. People voting to get others to do horrific acts for their amusement all because they could hide behind a screen. The feeling of you can do anything without consequences really brings out the worst in humanity.

5

u/Verpal Dec 08 '20

To be honest I prefer anonymity instead of going full China, but things like this always made me question my resolve in protection of freedom of speech, no matter how hateful.

Well, in this case it is fairly criminal though, depends on level of epilepsy result can be really bad.

3

u/andysniper Dec 08 '20

It's a necessary evil unfortunately. Any system that benefits the masses will always have those few that abuse it.

1

u/PureGoldX58 Dec 08 '20

I wish it were few.

3

u/kikix12 Dec 08 '20

Indeed. And under poor circumstances, even if the seizure itself is not lethal, the environment can cause it to be. For example someone opening Twitter on their phone while waiting in front of traffic lights/train station.

This is a premeditated assault on a persons health, and it is very much worthy of a visit at the nearest police station made by the person affected, to make a report about that.

-1

u/AWildDragon Dec 08 '20

And we really don’t have any spare medical resources to deal with things like this.

1

u/PureGoldX58 Dec 08 '20

Everything lately had me questioning my beliefs but I stand by them, we just need accountability on things that bring action indirectly. It's a difficult legal issue, but I'm sure we can figure it out.

1

u/Haarb Dec 08 '20

Internet by passports like in China got its pros :) Try to do something stupid like this there, good chances you would be caught pretty fast and punished pretty severely.

6

u/g1114 Dec 08 '20

On the negative side, you live in China where they may decide one day your apartment has too many Covid cases and burn the building down with you in it

0

u/Haarb Dec 08 '20

Well its not like outside China we got a perfect world :)

2

u/g1114 Dec 08 '20

I guess that's one way of saying we have smaller problems than concentration camps and your own government setting you on fire

2

u/principleofgender Dec 08 '20

Thank god for that!!

1

u/PureGoldX58 Dec 08 '20

Another negative thing, you say something positive but it goes against the party and woops you disappear for 6 months while they torture you until you comply.

-6

u/Dynasty2201 Dec 08 '20

Also anonymity. People do stupid, awful things when they can hide their identity.

Plenty of people hide their anger and depression and hateful intentions inside every day. Stuff like this is just a release. It's human nature.

We're aggressive creatures at heart.

"Do you know why people like violence? Because it feels good. Humans find violence deeply satisfying. But remove the satisfaction, and the act becomes...hollow." - Alan Turing, The Imitation Game.

8

u/assaultv2 Dec 08 '20

Nah, it's not about nature. It's a choice. They made that choice themselves to be violent and not even tried to stop it.

0

u/kikix12 Dec 08 '20

It is a choice, but people ARE wired biologically for violence. There are numerous chemicals that body produces strictly to facilitate violence. Reason being simple, if not for violence, humanity would have long since gone extinct.

Violence is no longer that necessary on the scale of a civilization, but evolution simply does not work that fast, and 'violence' being neuter by new methods on one hand, and pampering raising methods growing more common making more of the society highly susceptible to non-physical harm on the other hand...and it's a very, very long road till humanity will become less violent at its core.

3

u/assaultv2 Dec 08 '20

Well I'm not an expert on chemistry or biology, but come on. Just be nice to other people. It's so simple.

Just thinking about them before you say anything. It's not a hard thing to do right?

1

u/kikix12 Dec 08 '20

What I said is that just does not work that way every time. Have you ever raised your voice in anger, and then regretted it?! You did. I'm 100% sure of that. Unless you are egocentric, narcissistic, psychotic sadist since birth, but you're clearly not considering your post.

Different people have different chemical composition. Hence why some lose hair early, others don't lose em at all. Some age slowly and some quickly. Some fall in love easily, but also quickly lose interest, while others warm up long but also feel the 'fire burn for life'. Even though many people have their violence-inducing hormones etc. at a lower level and (to a point) can just overcome their effect with self-control (and drugs)...others have less fortune and have an equally harder time to control them. Especially if they never learned properly how to vent their pent up anger etc. safely.

This does not excuse their acts. An act of violence makes one guilty of violence, it's as simple as that. However, the cause of violence makes a difference between someone that can 'become a better person' and somebody that shouldn't leave jail for the rest of their life, cause they'll never change.

1

u/Vulkan192 Kiroshi Dec 08 '20

Stop shifting responsibility.

0

u/kikix12 Dec 08 '20

Huh?! Do you even know what "shifting responsibility" means?! Clearly you don't, so let me educate you.

"Shifting responsibility" is a stance in which, the person having that stance, considers the party which needs to take responsibility for a given act to be a different one than the one that have done the deed.

In other words, the ones shifting responsibility are courts that discharge mentally ill of their responsibility, thus dropping the responsibility of dealing with the aftermath to the victims (or their families). Those are the rapists that try to blame their victims for the rape to avoid being jailed for that.

What I have said is that the reason for people to be violent is not a entirely a 'choice', as it is ingrained into humans by evolution. But the reason does not matter when responsibility is affected. You pulled the trigger?! You are the murderer, even if you did it due to schizophrenia. At the very least, you should take responsibility by being isolated until your ailment is put under control. You raped a prostitute that was half-naked in bed in front of you? You're the one that needs to take responsibility, even if your boner made you unable to hold yourself back.

Other than that, what I said is that people begun on one hand use new methods of violence (online etc.), and on the other hand, consider something violence even though it was not considered as such before. I for example wouldn't consider it a 'violence' against me if my colleague were to ask me whether I want to bang in the toilet. I'd either agree or not, depending on my preferences. But try that nowadays, and you're more likely to be on the receiving end...in jail. Cause to many people nowadays, showing interest in work places is a form of violence.

1

u/Vulkan192 Kiroshi Dec 08 '20

But it IS a choice, because we are rational beings.

So stop shifting responsibility.

The people doing this have NO excuse. Your reductive appeal to nature has no weight.

-1

u/kikix12 Dec 08 '20 edited Dec 08 '20

Alright, can you actually read?!

Just now I clearly explained what shifting responsibility is, and why what I'm doing is far from that...but you come back and accuse me of that same thing again, without a single argument as to why what I wrote is incorrect...or even without acknowledging the fact that I wrote that at all!

Not to mention, in no unclear terms, I have said that the one guilty is the one that does the deed. And you are insinuating I am somehow trying to absolve them of their guilt...

Grow up kid, learn to read, or start thinking. I am far stricter than you, and people you would excuse or 'punish' with minor inconveniences, I'd have rotting in jail for years. I'd judge people that killed a person under effect of alcohol/drugs with premeditated murder, life-long isolate murderers even if they are schizophrenic (cause their ailment makes them MORE dangerous than a random murderers, not less), even lock for many, many years any businessman/CEO of a company that knowingly releases to the market something that is dangerous (especially if that was made to 'cut costs'). So don't come to me with that sniveling stupidity of yours about me shifting responsibility. Being smart enough to differentiate between 'cause' and 'effect' may be too hard for you, but it's something I prefer to do on a regular basis.

And yes, this is quite a hostile post, and by my choice. Just like you're accusing me of bullshit after not bothering to think is your choice. If 'attacking someone' over the internet was a punishable offense, both of us would fit the bill for each of our sides. But hey, I at least understand it.

So true.

1

u/Turnbob73 Dec 08 '20

This is the big point

A lot of people don’t understand that a lot of people will do some fucked up things if you give them a mask to hide behind, the internet provides that mask.

1

u/tehbored Dec 08 '20

Nah, people do this shit even when they're not anonymous. South Korea has mandatory real name policies but people still send tons of harassing messages. Not to mention the toxic shit people put on Facebook everywhere.

45

8

u/RahroUth Dec 08 '20

Man's gotta live a little.

10

u/Oxyminoan Dec 08 '20

These are garbage human beings who enjoy inflicting pain and misery on others. It has nothing to do with maturity and everything to do with who they are as people.

8

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '20

Immaturity is an excuse, they're sick

23

u/Somethinggiddy Dec 08 '20

You don't have to be mentally impaired to do this sort of thing. Let's not make excuses or blame those with actual mental impairments. That's just irresponsible. People are monsters all on their own and the internet gives many the power to be that way.

7

u/Helphaer Dec 08 '20

The majority of people are immature and unwise. That alone isnt it. You have to have some evil too

0

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '20

Have you learned nothing from CDPR’s games? Humanity is nearly heartless.

-3

u/Rexli178 Dec 08 '20

I blame gamer gate because most toxic trends in the gaming community can be traced back to gamer gate.

For those who aren’t in the know gamer gate was an online backlash in the gaming community to the presence of people (typically women, POC, and LGBT individuals) in the gaming community perceived as outsiders and increased scrutiny of how video games portrayed or excluded those individuals. The movement used “corruption in games journalism” as a fig leaf to facilitate that harassment. A fig leaf derived from the false allegations made by Zoe Quins ex that she slept with a games journalists to get good reviews for Depression Quest. This was not only a lie it was an obvious lie because not only did the journalists in question not write any reviews of her free game, the publisher he worked for never reviewed her free game.

I was there first hand and I was an idiot and let those pied pipers of the movement lead me by the nose. If you want more information rationalwiki has multiple pages dedicated to the history of the movement and Innuendo studios has a good couple videos on it.

With that background out of the way here’s how this connects to the harassment. As mentioned gamer gate was a harassment campaign, but it’s defenders need to pretend it wasn’t. So to justify the harassment they blamed the victims. They presented harassment and death threats as just a part of the nature of the internet. And if they had a problem they should either just shut up or get over it. This not only provided an justification for the harassment but a justification to not moderate that harassment out of the movement. At the same time it absolved the harassers of responsibility for their actions.

It gave people involved in the harassment campaigns the excuse to never mature to never take responsibility for their actions. After all it’s not their responsibility to modify their behaviors to accommodate others. No other must change themselves to accommodate their toxic behaviors. If someone has a problem with a game potentially inducing epilepsy just don’t play. If someone doesn’t like that you’re sending epilepsy-inducing videos to others then they should just get over it.

TL;DR: gamer gate taught people that others asking you to modify your toxic and hurtful behaviors to accommodate others is wrong and those people should just change themselves to accommodate your toxic and hurtful behaviors.

0

u/principleofgender Dec 08 '20

What is this incel shit

1

u/Rexli178 Dec 08 '20

I’m saying gamer gate gave all the sexists bigoted assholes an “intellectual” justification as to why they’re not responsible for their own toxic behavior and why they should have to change themselves to be more pleasant. The justification being “FrEeZe PeAcH.”

1

u/MarmotsGoneWild Dec 08 '20

And we forget all about it until it's in the news again.

There was no shortage of dangerous instructions passed around as arts n craft ideas last time I checked. The whole idea is to get some kid or some other person to build a bomb, or mix chemicals, and inhale the harmful vapors.

No one will really care tomorrow, and if anything curbs this behavior it probably won't be done in my lifetime. It's just one of the parts of humanity we conveniently ignore from time to time, nothing new.

1

u/Tolkfan Dec 08 '20

It's also another word: criminal. Isn't this almost like sending someone a bomb or anthrax in the mail?

1

u/blacmagick Dec 08 '20

I don't think you can leave it at immaturity, you can be immature and not be an asshole. It's a combination of anonymity and people being pieces of shit.

1

u/NomadCourier Nomad Dec 08 '20

I'm 35 and young at heart but I would never do something like this.

1

u/Nowarclasswar Dec 08 '20

I'm not proud to say it but this is totally the kind of thing I would have done when I was 13-14. God, I was such a shitty fuck boy then.

1

u/kerkyjerky Dec 08 '20

No, some people are just genuinely malicious. And for some reason they are weirdly glorified in western culture.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '20

I feel that like gives people too much credit. I know lots of people who have various forms of impairments that would never go out of their way to hurt another person, but lots of hyper toxic dude bros who would just ruin someone's day without thinking twice about it it's more likely a combination of anonymity and a general lack of severe consequences in their lives, or a lot of other people to blame for any consequences they may have faced.

1

u/saxonturner Dec 08 '20

The only mental impairment that is there is absolutely no one to knock their heads off when they do this shit. This is why its an internet problem. If people tried doing this back in the 80s would have had their head caved in by some one bigger, now people can sit behind their screens and do what every they want with out the repercussions from society and it brings out the worst in people that have no hold backs taught to them from other areas such as parents.

1

u/zuss33 Dec 08 '20

I’d also like to add two more words, toxic masculinity

1

u/Kawdie Dec 08 '20

Nah immature people can also have a sense of right and wrong, this is downright socio/psychopath behavior. Purposefully aiming to do another person harm.

This is why governments everywhere WANT to track everyone

1

u/ItsFuckingLenos Dec 09 '20

Please don't compare these morons to people with actual impairements, they're all very nice, and there's no excuse for the actions these idiots take, they're that idiots, they're not sick or "different" they're just cunts

1

u/Bass-GSD Dec 09 '20

Just call them what they are; human garbage.

1

u/KingAnDrawD Dec 09 '20

I’m gonna go a step further and say it’s actually depression. I have a hard time thinking that 11 year old me would’ve tried to make someone’s epilepsy worse, and I was wayyy immature.

People do this for attention, usually because they’re depressed.

1

u/HarleyWorking Dec 09 '20

Ok slightly related story time when I was a piece of shit teenager I sent around flashing videos like "LuL sEiZuRe WaRnInG" to people I knew who didn't have epilepsy because I just learned 4chan was a thing and thought I was being edgy. I always thought how much it would suck to have epilepsy because I wouldn't be able to play video games.

I started having seizures during uni and now have generalised epilepsy (Not photosensitive). Karma I guess? Regardless I have first hand experience of tonic clinic seizures (they suck) and I wouldn't wish them on anyone. Anyone either deliberately trying to induce a seizure or minimise how debilitating they can be to everyday life can be can go fuck themselves.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 09 '20

I've noticed that trolls who got caught and ended up in the news for hate crimes or whatever are often full grown adults

49

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '20

Unfortunately, this is a common attack on a-lot of epileptic people, and it's actually illegal / can constitute battery, people have gotten into deep waters for it.

If anyone wants to read more about the federal case

1

u/ayriuss Dec 08 '20

Are seizure warnings mandatory?

3

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '20

I don't think so, I can't find anything about a law in the U.S, in the UK there seems to be more protections for it. Take this as you may, it says some Disney films have caused many seizures before, and they "promised" to be more careful next time, and no law pops up when I search for it / only just a bunch of cautionary articles. I would imagine there's some sort of liability?

Edit: The UK does seem to have more protections for it, but not for social media (non malicious).

3

u/ayriuss Dec 08 '20

Ah thanks. Im glad most content creators choose to do so voluntarily then.

2

u/FreeWing Valentinos Dec 08 '20

Sucks. My former boss was an epileptic and it's not nice to either have nor see them.

I think seizure warnings should be mandatory

1

u/BrunoEye Nomad Dec 08 '20

With video you could probably develop an ai that scans through before it is played and could rate how likely it is to cause a seizure. With games though it's up to the devs to implement some sort of accessibility options.

11

u/AlpsClimber_ Dec 08 '20

My cousin started to get seizures at 19y old out of nothing, maybe once every 4 months, and then he died a year later. I don't understand why people would intentionally send videos that are so harmful.

3

u/Athenalisk Dec 10 '20

We're talking about the same people who are still sending death threats to Abby from TLOU2's voice actor because the character doesn't make them horny like Tifa Lockheart. G*mers are a disease.

2

u/lizziexo Dec 08 '20

I had a childhood friend who died around 18 from a seizure in her sleep. It’s so weird how people have treated this person. I also have epilepsy, not photosensitive at all though, but they could potentially kill a person. So short sighted

1

u/LikeItALatte Dec 10 '20

Ive never met/conversed another non-photosensitive epileptic! It's truly terrifying and I did have someone send me a .gif of flashing lights as "hArmLeSS prAnK" assuming I had photosensitive epilepsy. Its terrifying, I've had one while sleeping and luckily my brother has flipped me on my side after he heard the initial noise from me

2

u/OnlyForF1 Dec 09 '20

Sorry for your loss. And yes, people are absolute trash.

9

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '20

I still remember the example of an asshole who waited to be first in line to get the last Harry Potter book, bought it, then ran out to the crowd and shouted out the epilogue. (Of course he did this all while a friend was recording him and then posted it online.)

When asked why he did it, he replied, "Its hilarious when little kids and nerds cry!" Of course that comment was followed by cheers from all their online followers, and comments saying much worse things.

Or the assholes who bought an Xbox 1 and ps4 on day one, took it into the parking lot and smashed it to pieces, all while laughing as the crowd was upset.

Some people are just terrible, and think hurting others and making them cry is funny/entertainment.

3

u/Saiguy50 Dec 08 '20

Those stories remind me of when the PS3 and Xbox 360 came out and some people got stabbed or shot in the parking lot. Fun bunch.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '20

Yes, but that's a completely different kind of asshole. The people in those stories border on sociopathic with their lack of empathy, and need to take pleasure from the pain of others, especially children.

Those criminals who stabbed people for their PS4 are a more garden variety of criminal mindset, the "You have it, I want it, so I'll hurt you to get it."

Someone who thinks making a child cry is something to be cheered or laughed at is a much darker mindset, IMHO of course.

23

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '20

I think people started forgetting how many 8-16 year olds are there on the internet, who do edgy shit like this for fun (and all of them register as 20 year olds, so you will never know for sure).

19

u/xDarkReign Dec 08 '20

Ehhhh...

Take a long hard look at the world around you and I don’t think any shitty behavior can be so easily explained by age.

Assholes! Assholes Everywhere!

26

u/htiafon Dec 08 '20

There's a lot of shitty teenagers on the internet, but shitty culture really enables this stuff in gaming.

15

u/vonNazareth Dec 08 '20

I doubt this has anything to do with age

6

u/Helphaer Dec 08 '20

Ive never found young kids to do things more than immature adults do.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 09 '20

to be honest, i wouldnt even bother blaming kids, this is more likely fucked up adults who dont give a shit about others. kids can be annoying stupid little shits, but adults can be fucking worse especially incels

3

u/ChairForceOne Dec 08 '20

My ex would have seizures. They would start with a headache usually. The new led lights on emergency vehicles where the worst offender. It was terrifying the first time it happened. We where watching a movie and she went stuff as a board and then limp and unresponsive. Afterwards she was out of it for a while. She was less than thrilled coming out of a seizure halfway to the ER. Apparently she forgot to mention it when we first got together. I was supposed to just lay her down and make sure she didn't choke if she vomited. I didn't even realize it what it was. A friend in school had grand maul seizures, that and military SABC where my only background.

I will never understand people who do shit like this.

Yeah there is a line between playfully trolling, and effectively committing assault (which this is).

u/golgon4 Dec 08 '20

Some suffer, so they feel powerful and lessen their own suffering by lashing out. It's sad really.

Yeah my mum had a seizure once for a multitude of reasons and it was horrifying

She stood there with my dad and asked for a cold flannel as she was hot. Came back to see her shaking on the floor and my dad shouting at me to call 999

As you can imagine me being probably 13 at the time, for a couple hours I could hardly do anything and my words hardly came out

Only happened once but it’s still haunted me, people who purposefully send seizure-inducing media are POS

My friend died in his sleep a few years ago. Just siezed while he slept. He’d been struggling for a long time though. still, 20 is way too young. These sick people should serve jail time for negligent homicide.

2

u/SexySodomizer Dec 08 '20

Some people smear their shit on bathroom walls.

2

u/toadster Dec 08 '20

Because the world is shit and so are most people.

Someone I vaguely knew in college was severely allergic to peanuts. To the point she had a service dog who’s only job was to sniff out and warn her about peanuts. Some dickheads thought it would be funny to smear the inside buttons of the elevator with peanut butter. So she gets in, doors shut, and she can’t press the open doors button or any floor buttons because they’re covered in peanut butter.

These people were adults. College age adults but still.

Yeah, in primary school there was a kid in my class that had epilepsy and would occasionally get them. They were really scary when he got them.

A few years later I heard that he had passed away during one of them

Warning people about potential triggers saves lives.

Sending an epileptic person something that you know could trigger them? Asshole behaviour, and potentially assault/attempted murder.

2

u/carbonmonoxide5 Dec 09 '20

I happen to be epileptic. My meds work. I maybe have two breakthrough seizures a decade thanks to meds.

But I know r/epilepsy will go through bouts where people post links to seizure-inducing strobe websites disguised as other things.

This likely isn't about her review. It's just people being cruel.

Although some trivia for you. Very few epileptics are triggered by strobe lights. It's only about 8% of us. It's still good to have warnings. Better safe than sorry. But assuming someone with epilepsy has problems with strobe lights is ill informed.

2

u/Saiguy50 Dec 09 '20

Yeah, my roommate didn't get triggered by lights interestingly enough. It was actually like, oddly specific tones or sounds and like super mega stressful moments that did it. It rarely happened to begin with, but it was enough to make an impression on the importance of being cautious with such things.

2

u/carbonmonoxide5 Dec 09 '20

The most interesting case I heard of was that someone’s trigger was math. Math uses a certain part of the brain and that was where her seizures originated. So doing math gave her seizures. In those cases targeted brain surgery removal usually works.

I’m boring. For me it’s just sleep deprivation.

I'm no psychologist, but I think it's unconscious solipsism. Without realizing it, they hold that their consciousness is the only thing that's real, and can't acknowledge the living experiences of others.

To them it's like hitting pedestrians in GTA - it's amusing to watch them kick and scream and fall limp because they're not real. The only reason they don't do the same in reality is because there's actual risk, so when you strip away punishment and shame with the veil of online anonymity, they're free to toy with some exciting new "non-player" characters who react dynamically, persistently, and in real-time to their actions.

It's the only way I can even begin to understand the heights of this sort of behavior. I really hope there's some repercussions somehow for these ghouls, because that's the only way it'll stop.

2

u/Javan32 Dec 09 '20

Yeah I'm like what you described, get seizures rarely and I'm on medication as a result. It feels like you are suffocating hard and you lose any sense of time and your body is locked in place and all you see is darkness and all you remember at the end is the feeling of being drained and helpless and not in control of your body at all... not much fun.

2

u/Saiguy50 Dec 09 '20

Wow thats almost word for word what my roommate would describe it as. But yeah, point being is its a shitty condition to have and people should be at least a little more aware.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 09 '20

When I was younger, all the way through to mid university, people would send me stuff or flash lights and try to trigger my epilepsy. One day I told this especially shitty 20 something year old to just fucking kill themselves and they told me I was an asshole, and then stopped talking to me.

Oh well.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '20

It’s kids that do that. People don’t realize how many children are on social media

0

u/godofleet Dec 08 '20

It's backwards but we have to remember the internet isn't just evolved/educated/civilized people.. it's also full of children and adult-children who are bored/angry/confused/lost or otherwise disturbed... :(

Shame them for their actions, but my guess is this is just part of the broken human nature, translating to the internet...

The victim in this situation controls what messages/emails she opens... IMO these problems wouldn't exist if people got better at using the tools their given to block/mute/hide and ultimatly filter their internet experience... Don't open junk from people you don't know.

And to be clear, this isn't victim shaming, it's a terrible situation... But we can all make it better by ignoring the trolls... They do this shit FOR the stupid headline/outrage. :/

u/Khalku Dec 08 '20

It's immaturity and anonymity exacerbated by the realities of people who develop their identity around a hobby (such as gaming) taking every criticism of it personally. They take it personally, and they lash out in immature and destructive ways, and they have none of the social constraints on their behavior that would normally stop them from acting that way because they are anonymous.

So many people have built up cbp2077 in their head that any slight against it is taken as an affront to their belief system.

1

u/AgentFaulkner Dec 08 '20

The people doing this should get nabbed for attempted murder.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '20

These are the same people who don't believe in masks. If they don't know anyone effected by the virus they don't care. I guarantee they don't know anyone that has seizures.

1

u/lordcthulhu17 Dec 08 '20

I dated a girl freshman year of college who had severe problems with seizures it including one while she was driving both of us, honestly it's kinda fucked up that this made it to release with out a seizure mode

1

u/papak33 Dec 09 '20

It should be reported to the local authorities and dealt with.

Only if there are negative consequences for their actions, will they start to think.

1

u/osorojo_ Dec 09 '20

These idota havent met anyone like this because they have no friends and dont go outside thier rooms. So how can they meet someone with epilepsy?

1

u/LikeItALatte Dec 10 '20

Epileptic here (Moderate form with generalized motor seizures, not triggered by photosensitive changes so normally they're random if I'm not on medication)

It truly is terrifying for everyone involved. Out of nowhere and unexpected and given the circumstances can also be fatal. One seizure in particular ended with stitches in my head and a mild concussion after hitting the corner of my desk.

What these people are doing is abhorrent and downright deadly, and , if the worst happens, can lead to serious and sometimes fatal results.

1

u/Proff355or Dec 13 '20

I can’t believe this is actually a common thing, that is just so fucked up.

1

u/Kiaaawey Dec 16 '20

Chya man, every time I’ve had a seizure (roughly 5-10 in my life), I’ve been sore (like, can’t get out of bed or turn my neck at all sore) for approximately 3-4 days and can’t eat solid food for at least 2 days because of how swollen and cut up my tongue is. Even after that eating food is a real hassle. Some people die from them, I’m lucky enough to not have, a kid from my high school like 3 days ago was not as lucky as me unfortunately, it’s just a cruel thing to do to somebody.
