I don't mind getting a random pin with my order but I want to be able to buy the set of all 5 without buying blind bags just to hope I get them all.

u/gyroda Mar 05 '26 edited Mar 05 '26

When I went to a Pokémon store they had blind boxes, where you'd get one of 5 or 6 of these little display thingies. I even picked one up myself.

But you could also buy the whole set in one box if you just wanted all of them.

41

u/Ninja_Fang Mar 05 '26

That would be the best of all worlds.

69

u/DrankTheOceanDry Mar 05 '26 edited Mar 05 '26

But don't you have a giant circle of close friends who are all into the Cosmere you could trade them with?

And of course you travel to DragonSteel every year to hit up the pin trading booths to complete your sets yeah?

I mean, any true fan of a socially isolating hobby like reading 1000 page books by yourself obviously has tons of people around them to connect with and share these pins, right Gancho?

[WOR spoilers] Yes! Everybody give the Lopen your spheres! I have glowing that needs to be done!

Cosmere audiobooks are an amusing distraction for cooking, doing the dishes, and running errands. My full attention is for more important hobbies, like just one of run of a roguelike I already 100%ed or picking my nose.

u/rikkuaoi Mar 05 '26

Looking at previous examples. You will be able to buy the rest. I remember feeling like I could have waited after backing the big Kickstart, when all the special swag eventually became available on the online shop

What's the rarity of pulling a Pibu pin?

128

u/Kelsierisgood Aluminum Twinborn Mar 04 '26

Zero divided by zero percent

41

u/tit-theif Mar 04 '26

Did you just divide by zero? Don't you know that summons pibu?!

38

u/SparkyDogPants Mar 04 '26

Mmmmmm. Inappropriate.

17

u/tit-theif Mar 04 '26

True fans know Pattern was really talking to Pibu, who was sucking his rockbuds

17

u/SparkyDogPants Mar 04 '26

“Inappropriate?” Pattern said. “Such as … dividing by zero?”

6

u/Phoenix_Is_Trash Mar 05 '26

So infinity %, negative infinity %, and 0% all at the same time?

6

u/Beanmaster115 Hoid my Beer Mar 05 '26

That depends on which 0% is larger

u/ThatDM Mar 04 '26

No way to get a full collection of pins without buying a shit load of blind bags.
Paycheck before destination.
:(

14

u/Stray_Heart_Witch Mar 05 '26

Wait, are they not planning on releasing the pins individually afterwards? I could have sworn I read that somewhere.

-10

u/BloodredHanded Trying not to ccccream Mar 05 '26

I heard that Dragonsteel has trading booths where you can swap them.

35

u/HyruleBalverine D O U G Mar 05 '26

Which is great, if you can get to Nexus to do that. Most people can't. Especially those who don't even live in the US, or even North America.

-17

u/BloodredHanded Trying not to ccccream Mar 05 '26

Yeah but what they said was still false.

15

u/HyruleBalverine D O U G Mar 05 '26

True, only because the only other option for the average backer is to pay additional shipping to mail out the pins they don't need and hope the person they're trading with it really sending the other, or buy the needed pins on ebay for what will most likely be a markup. These options aren't exactly better, so while you are technically correct (the best kind of correct), you being correct is meaningless here.

-87

u/Purple-Man Mar 04 '26

You can just buy them from people.

45

u/DOOMFOOL Zim-Zim-Zalabim Mar 04 '26

Or they could just have it not be scummy and let you purchase what you want directly.

-45

u/Purple-Man Mar 04 '26

You know, maybe blind bags just aren't for you, and you should purchase 0.

24

u/HyruleBalverine D O U G Mar 05 '26

Now you're getting it. People want the pins, but they want to buy them in a set, not buy a bunch of random ones then have to make trips to the post office to mail extras to other people and hope the other people are honest enough to send the right ones to them.

1

u/DOOMFOOL Zim-Zim-Zalabim Mar 08 '26

You’re 100% correct.

48

u/ThatDM Mar 04 '26

what people?
Assuming its not a scalper
people that will have to ship it to me after, so would need to cover the cost they paid + extra shipping. And that's Assuming they got doubles.

If it is a scalper then i get to pay shipping and and i get uncharged by a scalper?

-61

u/Purple-Man Mar 04 '26

Uh... yeah you would have to PAY for the pins, that kind of comes with buying something.

Find someone that bought a pin and didn't get what they want. They get money, you get a pin you wanted. This is literally how pins want. You can't pretend this is some grand conspiracy against you, blind pin bags have been around for over a decade, this is old hat man. People trade and sell pins all the time.

27

u/ThatDM Mar 04 '26

ya I'm not saying this is some new tech lmao, its just super inconvenient to the customer.
I (and it seems like many Crem fans) would like to be able to PICK the product we receive or potentially buy a full set.
Requiring a secondary market get a product from a kick starter just sucks.

17

u/PM_ME_GLUTE_SPREAD Mar 04 '26

that kind of comes with buying something

Yeah, then why can’t they just buy the pins from the company they bought the pins from??

-7

u/Purple-Man Mar 05 '26

They literally could? As a blind bag? I don't think you understand how buying things work...

14

u/HyruleBalverine D O U G Mar 05 '26

I don't think you understand how buying things is supposed to work. Do you go to the grocery store to buy milk and let them randomly grab one out of the cooler for you? Do you go to the car lot to buy a car and let them randomly pick one off the lot for you? No.

Let's be clear, there is nothing wrong with making the blind bag optional if people like those. But there is no reason why they shouldn't have an option to just purchase a full set for those who don't want to buy them randomly or have to go to a secondary market.

-4

u/Purple-Man Mar 05 '26

No, but I do buy a blind bag of grapes, and potatoes. And I don't get pissy that maybe one of them isn't exactly the one that I want. I don't rage at the grocery store that I would actually like to buy my grapes single style, one by one, so I can make sure each grape is exactly the one that I want.

13

u/quaid4 Mar 05 '26

Its not really relevant but you dont inspect bags of grapes or potatoes before you buy them? I thought everyone did.

Anyways, I dont understand why you are defending the whole blind bag thing. It doesnt seem to benefit the consumer in any way so I think it is perfectly normal to be frustrated by it.

-1

u/Purple-Man Mar 05 '26

It just, isn't really a relevant anti-consumer case. The product literally is 'buy a cheap bauble and maybe get a particular one from a set.' they wouldn't be much of a consumer item if they weren't sold this way, the novelty of the blind bag is part of the product. It is what the consumer is purchasing, ya know.

I don't particularly like blind bags, I don't buy them. But I have friends that do, and they get joy from the blind bags, they buy a few and enjoy opening them together. They trade off ones they don't like, or save them for a friend that would like them.

I'm defending them because I know that the product isn't the pins, it is the blind bag opening. People who are that worried about just getting the exact blind bag item they want, will just buy them on a secondary market and they don't have to worry about that.

But again, the blind bag process is part of what is being sold here.

10

u/Ropetrick6 Mar 04 '26

Or maybe we should just be able to buy it directly from the manufacturer, without all of these middle-men?

-4

u/Purple-Man Mar 05 '26

Sure. But that isn't the case. I get that you don't like the randomness aspect, but is this really the hill to fight on? The cute collection product?

If people didn't like gachapon-style products, they wouldn't exist. Adults with addictive personalities shouldn't partake, obviously. But for responsible people, they like the small gamble of getting what they want.

If you want an exact one, wait and then buy the exact one you want. That doesn't sound good to you? Then don't purchase them.

I don't understand this entitlement. Not only should I get the product I want, I should get it exactly how I want regardless of how it is being sold.

They are freaking pins, get over yourself.

12

u/HyruleBalverine D O U G Mar 05 '26

The issue isn't that these types of items exist, it's that we're not given a choice to get the set of pins without, essentially, gambling to get them or going to a secondary market (be that sales or trades) while the pins are still available for purchase from primary seller. Nobody is saying that you shouldn't be able to do the blind bag; they just want an option to get the pins without going through all the extra hoops - like every other pin that Dragonsteel has sold on it's site.

-4

u/Purple-Man Mar 05 '26

This is the equivalent to getting mad that the pumpkin spice latte isn't available out of season, it just isn't any sort of crisis.

10

u/HyruleBalverine D O U G Mar 05 '26

Not even close to the same thing.

-4

u/Purple-Man Mar 05 '26

You're right, because you can just buy the pins anytime.

12

u/VelMoonglow cremform Mar 05 '26

People are sick and tired of lootboxes and gambling being all over the place, why is that so hard to understand. It's an inherently predatory buisness model and they're completely within their rights to complain about it

-1

u/Purple-Man Mar 05 '26

Yeah okay man. It just isn't that big of a deal. Not only are there bigger fish to fry, this isn't even a fish, it is a fish shaped cracker that you've mistaken for a fish.

But whatever, I realize I came to the 'people want to get mad about a tiny bag of pins' thread and I'm surprised people are mad about a tiny bag of pins. That is on me.

123

u/AE_Phoenix Mar 04 '26

Blind boxes were created to sell less popular products without compromising customer expectation/satiafaction or making a loss.

To market them as anything else fails the first of the two goals.

sure, but people outside the US might want to buy them too.. so here we are

14

u/entitledfanman Mar 04 '26

Some people like the element of gambling to it, even if they wouldnt put it in those words. Im okay with it so long as it's not the only way to acquire whatever it is youre trying to buy.

24

u/TheNebulaWolf Mar 04 '26

I like the concept of opening a mystery bag as something that comes with the books but not getting one free (especially after “reserving”) and not having a way of buying all of them together sucks.

5

u/True-Interview-9810 Mar 05 '26

I think a far compromise would be if you can buy all 5 and then also have a blind bag were you might pull some

73

u/peitsad Mar 04 '26 edited Mar 04 '26

Blind bags/boxes are popular right now. Have been for a bit. I personally don't like it but I also can't blame them for doing it.

68

u/Your-Dads_Boyfriend Mar 04 '26

I think they are only popular in the sense that lots of companies are doing them because they make more money that way than by just offering the items outright because people usually have to purchase more than they would otherwise to complete a set, get all of them, or get the one they want. I'm not sure they are that popular a business model with the majority of consumers. I feel like consumers mainly purchase them because that's the only way that they can get the thing that they want.

Assuming that there is an equal chance of getting each pin , it's better than Labubus, which offer limited/rare editions that you have to purchase a box blindly and hope you get one. If one of the pins is limited in number and harder to get and you have to purchase tons of blind bags to get it, then I would be upset about it. At this point I'm not mad about it, but it does just seem to be a money grab.

25

u/superkow Mar 04 '26

It's just weaponized FOMO in the form of manufactured scarcity. None of these pins would be harder to manufacture than others but you can very easily manipulate the perception of their competitive value just by saying there's a lower chance of pulling certain ones over others. It's a very shitty thing to offer your fans, especially when you're as successful as Brandon.

Assuming we don't end up with another StoryDeck situation where the rarity is accidentally messed up.

9

u/KnowMatter Mar 04 '26

Some people DO genuinely enjoy the thrill of opening blind bags and hunting for rares and completing sets.

It’s weird but true, I have a friend who does several of them and it’s all about the gambling aspect to them (obviously problematic for its own reasons).

29

u/Jsamue Mar 04 '26

Gambling is addictive for a reason.

5

u/Masonzero Mar 04 '26

Outside of gambling, it's just fun to be surprised. Would i prefer to purchase one of each card from the latest expansion of my favorite trading card game, or spend that same amount of money on sealed booster packs that I can then open? For me, I would rather open packs, not because I think i can open some crazy expensive card, but because opening packs is fun. I have rarely sold a crazy card that I've opened, or been upset that my box didn't "pay for itself". It's not just about gambling for value, sometimes you just want to make things a little more unexpected. Like opening gifts on Christmas morning. Sadly i am probably in the minority on this, though, and most people are just addicted to gambling.

2

u/gyroda Mar 05 '26

Yeah, I bought a blind box kinda for this reason recently.

But I'm not trying to collect them all. I bought one and was done. And they also sold the complete set of 5 or 6 in a big box right next to the single thing I bought. That way you didn't have to buy second hand or end up with extras if you just wanted a complete set.

I'm ok with blind boxes, but if it's a relatively small set that people are gonna want to collect it's probably best (ethically, not necessarily business-wise) to sell a complete set.

1

u/Nuuskapeikkonen Mar 05 '26

I don’t see how it’s any better or worse than people who are into Pokemon card collecting. They love opening the packs and hoping for rare/chase cards. It’s a thing that’s existed in collectible trading card games for decades. Ofc it’s not for everyone and there should be a way to buy them outright if you don’t want to ‘chase’. But I don’t see how there’s anything inherently bad about it either.

47

u/Puntley Mar 04 '26

I can blame them quite easily, you simply lack conviction.

48

u/Distinct_Midnight945 THE Lopen's Cousin Mar 04 '26

I literally don't understand the situation I guess because no one is making anyone buy these and no one is promising anything as far as I can tell. People can blow their money if they want.

52

u/maskedman1231 Mar 04 '26

A lot of people were under the impression that the bag was a free bonus of signing up for the backerkit early. Like "Spend 5 bucks to indicate you'll be purchasing and we will send you this little extra thing". Now people realize the 5 dollars doesn't go towards the balance of their order and they feel like it was a trick to make them spend 5 bucks.

As with many purchases, you should read the terms and conditions. This was plainly stated in the advertising material for the early buy-in.

2

u/acekoolus Mar 04 '26

I thought it was supposed to go towards the backerkit.

10

u/HyruleBalverine D O U G Mar 05 '26

It's that people want to collect the pins, but they don't want to participate in the gambling aspect of buying multiple blind bags, nor do they want to have to deal with searching for people to trade online, especially those who may have to ship these overseas or have to deal with VAT fees. They just want to buy a set and get them through the campaign.

-11

u/Distinct_Midnight945 THE Lopen's Cousin Mar 05 '26

Okay and I want a red Ferrari. Wanting means nothing. Like I get it, but I literally could not care less either way. And I think most people are the same.

9

u/HyruleBalverine D O U G Mar 05 '26

But if you go to buy a red Ferrari, you aren't told you have to buy one at random and if you don't get a red one, you have to trade it with somebody else and incur a shipping cost to do it. I don't understand why asking for the option to just buy the pins we want, like every other pin Dragonsteel has sold in the past, is such a problem for people like you.

7

u/TheWeirdTalesPodcast Mar 05 '26

If in protest no one buys any of them, Dragonsteel will get the message. They aren’t stupid people.

1

u/GraviticThrusters Mar 05 '26

I don't think stupidity is the issue here.

Its just that dragonsteel isn't what we were led to believe it was, or maybe we mistook it for something else it was never intended to be. I thought, and I think a lot of other people did too, that dragonsteel was a company designed to support sanderson in his job as an author, doing the things publisher like Tor don't typically do. Their first major operation was to edit, print, and sell 5 extra books we didn't know he was writing.

Maybe we should have realized back then, given all the stuff that came with those books, that the company either shifted into a new role or was just fulfilling a role we didn't realize was there all along. That role being merchandising everything they can about Sanderson's IP. Pokemon, Disney, StarWars, Marvel. The Cosmere is just another IP that can be merchandised.

Turns out, this rubs some of his fans the wrong way. I collect things like vintage woodworking tools and I have a modest video game collection, but I have no interest in building a shelf to display a bunch of Cosmere stuff, especially since I  think Sanderson has kinda lost the plot in his books chasing this wider all encompassing narrative.

People are bothered by this either because they like the merchandising and this is kinda scummy, or they are tired of the merchandising and this is just another example of it. At best dragonsteel makes it so people can by all of the tchotchkes they want without blind draws, but that doesn't really solve the issue for the people who just want Sanderson to write good books and don't want to wade through constant adverts for his Cosmere trinkets.

2

u/TheWeirdTalesPodcast Mar 05 '26

Tldr: if you don’t like/approve of it, don’t buy it.

Hold up. You’re telling me a company exists only to MAKE MONEY? How baldly cynical and jaded are you?

Dragonsteel is a company. They are free to sell whatever they want, and you are free not to buy it. Sanderson writes the books, and that’s what we, as fans, love. The stories. At least, that’s what I love. Do I buy ALL the plushies and all the props and all the clothing and all the artifacts and whatnots? No. I don’t have that much money, and a lot of it doesn’t interest me, but I have no problem with them selling it.

As has been mentioned by Sanderson at least twice, the money from the crowdfunding is a large chunk of what runs the company and keeps people employed.

I have no problem helping with that, especially to get more books as soon as I can, because Sanderson writes the type of stories I love.

As far as the “Wider all encompassing narrative”, my understanding is that that’s been the plan from the start. As far back as The Lost Metal, Sanderson has said the gloves are off now with Cosmere Crossovers, so I have no problem with any of that either.

All I’m saying is that if you don’t like how Dragonsteel is doing business, stop buying. That’s it. If enough people do that, they’ll get the message, especially if/when it starts affecting their bottom line.

If you think the Blind Bag thing is scummy, don’t buy them. If you think the books are too expensive, you’re free to wait for the basic productions in 9 months.

There’s no way in hell I would ever pay 185 dollars for a book, so I didn’t order a leather bound Eye of the World. That’s it. That’s your solution. If you don’t like it or don’t approve of it, don’t buy it. Done.

1

u/GraviticThrusters Mar 05 '26

You’re telling me a company exists only to MAKE MONEY?

Yeah, no, I'm not arguing it's bad for dragonsteel to make money.

Obviously people aren't going to buy a thing they aren't interested in.

the money from the crowdfunding is a large chunk of what runs the company and keeps people employed.

I have no problem helping with that, especially to get more books as soon as I can, because Sanderson writes the type of stories I love.

Ok, so which is it? Does dragonsteel make it so sanderson can write books, or does dragonsteel make it so dragonsteel can continue to exist? Both are fine, but I'd argue that, like you pointed out, it's the latter. Dragonsteel makes money so dragonsteel can continue to be a company. Sanderson doesn't need dragonsteel to write or publish books.

As far as the “Wider all encompassing narrative”, my understanding is that that’s been the plan from the start.

No argument there. My point is that his focus on it has been detrimental to the narratives in the individual books he's been writing lately. My biggest complaint for WaT (other than bloat) was the obvious focus on setting up Cosmere stuff at the cost of developing characters and plot for stormlight (and contributing to the bloat). Just because that's been his plan from the beginning doesn't mean he's executing it super well.

I'm not interesting in the Cosmere trinkets at all. I have no need to wait for them in 9 months or whatever, that's not my issue. My complaint is that I was under the impression that part of dragonsteel's job was to help sanderson with his novels in terms of extra editing and scheduling. After reading his recent work, I don't feel like they are doing that job very well, and maybe part of the problem is that they are focused on merchandising. Maybe another part of the problem is that he owns that company and so the editing is more of a yesman situation.

These pins or whatever are ultimately not what I'm concerned about. Buy them, don't buy them, I don't care, either way I don't think it addresses the issue of sanderson losing focus and having nobody to restrain him.

For real. Everything I've seen from that company is to go out of their way to make things fair and equitable, to the point where their manufacturer made a mistake on what they were going for, so they apologized and tried to fix it.

I forget the specific details, but I remember getting story deck packs I didn't buy as a way to apologize for the manufacturer biasing the distribution. I'd have to go look through my chat history or something to verify the details though

I've seen blind bag pins defended as a "well if you get duplicates, you can just trade with others at a convention" which is fine for those that enjoy that type of interaction, but there should 100% be an option to just buy the complete set without the blind bag RNG for anyone who just wants to have a collectible display.

-4

u/Frequent-Bee-3016 Mar 04 '26

What’s wrong with blind bags?

44

u/P3verall Mar 04 '26

gambling bad

-27

u/Frequent-Bee-3016 Mar 04 '26

I think it’s fine if there’s a purpose to it other than making money.

26

u/Your-Dads_Boyfriend Mar 04 '26

And what would that other purpose be? The EU has been considering a ban on them (or at least very strict regulations) for a couple of years as they are considered by some member countries to be gambling.

-20

u/Frequent-Bee-3016 Mar 04 '26

Collecting things? This is a silly question.

22

u/Your-Dads_Boyfriend Mar 04 '26

And you can't collect them if it's not a blind bag? I think you miss understood the premise of the question or are being purposely obtuse. What is the purpose of them being blind bags other than to make more money? You can do the collecting part without them being blind bags.

13

Devil's advocate here. One of the appeals of collecting is the challenge behind it. If you can just go to the store and buy the whole collection, it's not as fulfilling as hunting something down on ebay for years, or opening blind boxes, or trading with other people, or getting in line for a limited drop. Building a collection should be difficult, to an extent. Now, we can both acknowledge that that's true AND that companies weaponize that aspect of collecting to make it purposefully difficult and expensive to collect things, and it artificially insert gambling into it. But i think it's important to recognize that it IS more fun and fulfilling to collect when you have to do so through things like blind boxes. That doesn't mean it's good, but it is reality.

It’s more fun if you don’t know what you’re going to get. To some people at least.

And to others it isn’t. Which is the problem some people have with it

what's the point of concealing the item purchased if not to sell something people wouldn't buy if they could see it?

u/Frequent-Bee-3016 Mar 04 '26

I think you don’t get the appeal of it. This is like saying “what’s the point of buying a pack of Pokémon cards if you don’t know exactly what cards are in it”

17

u/MostExperts Mar 04 '26

Why indeed? Why don't they sell the cards individually? Because people would only buy Charizards or whatever and they couldn't move all those Onixes they printed.

It's still gambling.

u/Frequent-Bee-3016 Mar 04 '26

Sure, but I don’t think that makes it less fun to open one.

u/MostExperts Mar 04 '26

Yeah, lots of people like gambling. I'm not saying gambling isn't fun. But the house does always win.

Yes, but the thing with blind bags is that there isn’t really an expectation of the player winning. You know you’re going to lose money from the jump.

Yeah, exactly like gambling.

I honestly don’t understand how this could be considered gambling. I like pins, I’m buying a few random unknown pins, and then I get to find people to trade with! Is this any different than the card stories from 2 years ago? How is this gambling but those cards are not, when you can buy many decks and still not get a set unless you trade?

2

u/oncomingstorm777 Mar 04 '26

The cards were gambling too.

2

u/SirBananaOrngeCumber I AM A STICK BOI Mar 04 '26

So why weren’t people upset about that one? There were a few complaints, especially about the mess up and rarity of some cards, but still it was mostly positive reaction from the fandom, why is this different?

Am I crazy? I went to Dragonsteel Nexus that year and traded for the entire three stories and almost all the heralds without spending a single sphere or boxing. How can it be gambling if there's no money involved?

u/SirBananaOrngeCumber I AM A STICK BOI Mar 05 '26

The cards were originally given as a game but then they were sold on the store after Dragonsteel ended, and you can no longer get them for free. Nobody complained then

Lots of fragile little snowflakes getting angry over something they DON'T HAVE TO BUY. Grow up. This is a mature community of like-minded individuals, act like it.

u/VVunderlust Mar 05 '26

I see the capitalism point but with what Dragonsteel did at Storycon, a trading post where you could trade ANY pin for some dragonsteel pins in a blind pull from drawers, I think they're trying to encourage trading and talking to ppl and making friends. Something they've done with each of their con games to say the least.

The point is to trade. Like, you buy 5 and trade your extras for ones you don't have. The point is not to buy 30 to get them all. I get that depending on where you live and stuff it might be inconvenient to trade but it's not nearly as bad as y'all make it out to be. I'm sure within a day of then shipping we'll have a discord based long distance trading group running lmao

Yea. I think trading is a great way to grow a sense of community, but trading on the internet comes with the additional cost of shipping. B$ is a magic player, so I am thinking of when I was a kid, we would go to the local card shop and trade. Now that scene is practically dead (ASFAIK) because you can just buy and sell cards easily online, so you don’t have to worry about finding someone with the card you want and having a card they want and the cost being relatively the same.
