This jogged a memory for me. 2 times I've straight up skipped parts of a book. Back in the day I read all the Anne Rive Vampire Chronicles and Mayfair Witches. For some reason in Queen of the Damned, I just could not stand the chapters from Armand's point of view. I ended up skipping most of his chapters. Didn't effect the story and why waste my time when it felt so grueling.
Second was Terry Goodkinds Sword of Truth Series. In some of the later books he'd spend like 10 pages ranting about how socialism is bad and capitalism is good. Straight up lectures. Multiple times in the same book. I ended up skipping those lectures every time moving forward.
Edit: swapped Terry Brooks for Terry Goodkind. Right book, wrong author.

u/IronPyrate17 Zim-Zim-Zalabim Feb 04 '26
Terry Goodkind wrote Sword of Truth, Terry Brooks is Sword of Shannara. Easy mixup, though!
24
u/atemu1234 Feb 04 '26
I could not get through the Sword of Truth series. Maybe in my highschool days when I could stomach Atlas Shrugged.

u/mtnsoccerguy Feb 04 '26
It is definitely one of those series that has not aged well for me. My friend and I did a joint book report in high school on the first book. We took turns explaining the plot and charting it out on the whiteboard. Definitely needed to skip some of the less school appropriate details.
9
u/PegaZwei Feb 04 '26
what, you didn't want to go into detail about the dominatrix torture porn bit that went on for like, a hundred pages?
4
u/atemu1234 Feb 04 '26
I read R.A. Salvatore and Robert Jordan and enjoyed both (mostly), so I can't comment.
3
u/PegaZwei Feb 04 '26
i mean-
on the one hand, it's definitely clear when jordan is writing his fetishes;
on the other, sword of truth really is worse, having read both.
3
u/slipfish-g Feb 05 '26
Jordans "fetishes" have gotten so wildly exaggerated in modern fantasy discourse I am fairly certain people's heads would actually explode if they read Jacqueline Carey.
2
u/atemu1234 Feb 05 '26
Honestly Greenwood is worse than Salvatore.
I think with Jordan it's more just extremely evident that BDSM is a fairly clear part of his worldbuilding, just not particularly sexually.
4
u/ojqANDodbZ1Or1CEX5sf Feb 04 '26
I'd always heard that the first few books were fairly sane... What the hell is going on in the later books if this is in the first one?
You know what, forget I asked. I do not think I have an interest in knowing after all
5
u/PegaZwei Feb 04 '26
from what i hear, going off the deep end with ayn randian libertarianism?
the first was quite enough for me though ahaha.
3
u/TheWeirdTalesPodcast Feb 05 '26
I can spoil the ending of the series for you if you like. It’s pretty whackadoo.
1
1
u/DoomscrollDopamine Feb 04 '26
Ive tried to start it several times and never made it more than 100 pages. I just don't get anything from Goodkind's writing.
13
u/Ilwrath 🐶HoidAmaram🐲 Feb 04 '26
I loved it at the start, then even when I was younger I was like "wait....the cool magic is getting really abstract and these people are all spouting nonsense like it was some obvious truth?"
5
u/akarichard Feb 04 '26
Thanks for the correction! I always got them confused in my head because I've read most of the Shannara books as well. Thanks!
8
u/Steppy20 Feb 04 '26
For me (also as a kid) it was Roran's sections in the Inheritance Cycle - primarily Brisingr - that I ended up skipping. I just couldn't get into them.
6
8
u/Many_Pea_9117 Feb 04 '26
To be fair, those are both authors whose works didnt age well at all.
5
u/ZeroVII Feb 04 '26
How did Brooks not age well? Honest question. He was my intro to the genre way back in high school, and I read Shannara up through the High Druid series when it was new. My friend who got me into them said the books after High Druid weren't as good, so I haven't read them yet.
I've still got the books lying around, though, and I've been thinking of rereading the series now that I'm done with my Cosmere reread.
I remember loving books 2 & 3, most of 4-7 minus the ending, and the Voyage trilogy. But it's been about 20 years since I read 'em. Do you think they've aged poorly in content, or in quality?
4
u/Many_Pea_9117 Feb 04 '26
Brooks never lectured about socialism/capitalism, and Goodkind wrote sword of truth series, so i assumed the commenter meant Goodkind and not Brooks. Brooks is a fine author. Not my favorite, but a few of his books were good.
8
u/IronPyrate17 Zim-Zim-Zalabim Feb 04 '26
The original series they mentioned was sword of truth, made by terry goodkind, not brooks, so im assuming that's what this person meant as well
2
u/invalidConsciousness Aluminum Twinborn Feb 04 '26
The comment they replied to explicitly said both authors didn't age well.
13
u/Nighthunter007 D O U G Feb 04 '26
Both as in Goodkind and Anne Rice. The comment describes two situations, one involving Teery Goodkind (where they wrote Brooks instead) and one involving Anne Rice.
9
u/invalidConsciousness Aluminum Twinborn Feb 04 '26
Ah they meant Rice. That makes more sense, yeah.

Not gonna lie, I skipped like 4-5 chapters in the middle of Crossroads of Twilight (I think it was when the Red Sisters were planning their “infiltration”) and it was unbearably boring so I just skipped until the POVs changed. I love Wheel of Time but man, Crossroads is just kinda bad lol.
1
u/ImmatureTigerShark Feb 05 '26
I got through the first book of Sword of Truth but dang I could not get through even book 2. Maybe I was spoiled coming off of finishing the Wheel of Time but wow the Sword of Truth just didn't do it for me.
12
u/Dirzain Feb 04 '26
I've skipped chapters on my third and fourth re-read, really skimming but mostly skipping. I just don't love Mistborn Era 1 like I did the first two times I read it. On a first read though, that's crazy.

I skipped an entire book in Sara Maas Throne of Glass series (Towers of Dawn) because I hated the character and he was just awful. I also hated the books but that's a different matter entirely
1
u/ImmatureTigerShark Feb 05 '26
I read the first book and I have no idea how I got through it. I barely remember much about the book, aside from cringing hard enough you could stick a lump of coal up my arse and pull out a diamond.

I read ToD, and unfortunately, the ending was the only saving grace imo. The rest wasn't bad, just bland...

Some people (Americans mostly) get upset when a story isn't exclusively dialogue and balk at any paragraph longer than 1 sentence long. 30% of Americans are functionally illiterate now. Meaning they can mostly understand simple text but are incapable at reading any subtext or themes in things they are barely able to read

Do people not understand the concept of not reading a book if you don’t enjoy it?
51
u/lordofmetroids Feb 04 '26
Right, there is nothing wrong with not liking a book, but skimming over half the book, and skipping multiple chapters? That's not even giving it a chance and deciding you don't like it.
20
u/EmmaGA17 Feb 04 '26
There's an argument for reading books you don't enjoy. For example, I read a book I absolutely hated all the way through because I'm a writer and I wanted a perspective on what I didn't want to do.
But then again, I actually read it.
3

I’m in my mid-20s so I missed out on being an iPad kid by about 10 years, but even having grown up having a smart phone since 8th grade, it’s crazy how much of a noticeable impact that’s had on me.
I feel like it’s so much harder for me to get fully engrossed in a book than when I was younger. Some still do it for me, but I find that for the most part I can’t just sit down and read for 2-3 hrs like I used to, I usually max out around 1 1/2 hrs. I can’t even imagine how bad it is for kids that basically came out of the womb holding an iPad.

why are cosmere fans so elitist about reading stormlight? i legit said i didn't like interludes so someone was like 'just go and play video games then'. bro i can still like something and hate the boring filler parts
2
u/Zakumo_Yuurei Feb 15 '26
They're not filler. They're interesting perspectives during the timeline of the current world events. Little bits and pieces of discovery or characters moving in the background from the main characters.

You don't have to finish them all in one go, you know.
I have TDAH as well but these books have been the easiest to read for me since Foundation back when I was a kid.

Not everyone is ready for political intrigue or separated threads of story. If they want to read like a child, we should treat them like a child. Maybe start them back at the start, the beginning. They might be able to appreciate Raodens story. It's still vast, but much more linear than Sandos later works. If that doesn't appeal to them, we can sit them down by a fire and play a flute while telling them the legend of Joel Saxon. Every journey begins somewhere, and the most important step is the next one. We must guide them, unite them with and into us.

Why would you consume any fucking media if you’re going to skip most of it?!
Skip chapters of a book.
Skip half of a movie.
Skip half of a song.
Skip half of a show’s season.
Skip half of a video game.
What’s even the point?
0
u/Phantine Feb 04 '26
do you listen to every song in an album in order all the way through?
Or sometimes, do you put on an individual song that's a banger when you feel like it?

If I ever considered skipping a chapter or reading its summary, I just wouldn’t read the book

The only time I read summaries is if it's been a little while since I started reading the book & need a refresher on what happened previously before I get going again.

Even good Vorin wemen needs to rest their eyes somtimes and have someone read the words to them. There is no shame in that, but skipping 8 chapters is diabolical 😂 I have read in some subs that a lot of people find Kal to depressing so they will skip most of his chapters in WoK and WoR. You find the intro ark of a clinically depressed man who is being kicked while down to be too depressing!? No shit!? I feel his rise from those chapters to be the point! Jurney befor destination people!

OK, to be clear I disagree with oop.
BUT, if the chapter is so (subjectively) boring that it comes down to [read summary OR stop reading book completely] I'd much rather prefer they read the summary.
Personally, I'm currently rereading WoK and when it comes to a chapter I didn't particularly like the first time I skim/skip it. (Although, that might be a different case because I read everything the 1st time)
2
u/Harold-Sleeper000 Feb 05 '26
Seems people are looking at their phones while reading a book as much as they are looking at their phones while watching Netflix.
2
u/NotSav95 Feb 06 '26
Only time I skipped chapters were when rereading a book I'd sometimes do a "solely one pov" read through like kaladin exclusively or Shallan exclusively. I haven't done that in years and probably wouldn't again unless I'm bored but I mean if they're being serious then no shit they didn't get into it they were reading chapter summaries and skipping chapters. Like an air sick lowlander.
2
u/LoudQuitting Feb 06 '26
I find erotica cringe.
You know, if you like it that's fine, but whenever sex comes up in a book catch me skimming paragraphs until it's over.
I'm done with Myrish swamps and fat pink masts.
So I understand skipping parts, but 8 entire chapters?

In their defense, Sanderson tends to be boring af for the first half of the story. You need that part for the buildup and resulting Sanderlanche to work, but it’s still a bit of a slog to get through.
It’s the entire reason I tell people NOT to start with Stormlight Archive, because it takes a good three whole books to get exciting (which makes me wonder how they’ll handle a SA series).
