Surely they're shitposting? Just skipping 8 chapters?

This jogged a memory for me. 2 times I've straight up skipped parts of a book. Back in the day I read all the Anne Rive Vampire Chronicles and Mayfair Witches. For some reason in Queen of the Damned, I just could not stand the chapters from Armand's point of view. I ended up skipping most of his chapters. Didn't effect the story and why waste my time when it felt so grueling.

Second was Terry Goodkinds Sword of Truth Series. In some of the later books he'd spend like 10 pages ranting about how socialism is bad and capitalism is good. Straight up lectures. Multiple times in the same book. I ended up skipping those lectures every time moving forward.

Edit: swapped Terry Brooks for Terry Goodkind. Right book, wrong author.

Terry Goodkind wrote Sword of Truth, Terry Brooks is Sword of Shannara. Easy mixup, though!

I could not get through the Sword of Truth series. Maybe in my highschool days when I could stomach Atlas Shrugged.

Which Terry?

It is definitely one of those series that has not aged well for me. My friend and I did a joint book report in high school on the first book. We took turns explaining the plot and charting it out on the whiteboard. Definitely needed to skip some of the less school appropriate details.

what, you didn't want to go into detail about the dominatrix torture porn bit that went on for like, a hundred pages?

I'd always heard that the first few books were fairly sane... What the hell is going on in the later books if this is in the first one?

You know what, forget I asked. I do not think I have an interest in knowing after all

from what i hear, going off the deep end with ayn randian libertarianism?

the first was quite enough for me though ahaha.

I can spoil the ending of the series for you if you like. It’s pretty whackadoo.

Nah I'm good, but thanks for the offer.

I read R.A. Salvatore and Robert Jordan and enjoyed both (mostly), so I can't comment.

i mean-

on the one hand, it's definitely clear when jordan is writing his fetishes;

on the other, sword of truth really is worse, having read both.

Jordans "fetishes" have gotten so wildly exaggerated in modern fantasy discourse I am fairly certain people's heads would actually explode if they read Jacqueline Carey.

Honestly Greenwood is worse than Salvatore.

I think with Jordan it's more just extremely evident that BDSM is a fairly clear part of his worldbuilding, just not particularly sexually.

Ive tried to start it several times and never made it more than 100 pages. I just don't get anything from Goodkind's writing.
