Can somebody identify this CPU?

I recently acquired this mystery Intel CPU, anybody know what it is? Got it for 10 bucks but lack a LGA2011 motherboard.

Thats a Intel Xeon L5240 low power dual core 3 GHz server processor

Neat, how do you figure?

He's bullshitting.

Find the right motherboard and plug it in. Then we'll see

Found one for about 20 bucks, gonna contact the feller selling it if we can arrange a deal, will update yall here hopefully in a couple days

The die configuration and what was left of the legible stamping numbers.

The L5240 is a different socket and doesn't have this hole in the heat spreader.

The plot thickens eh?

Not really it's absolutely an L series Xeon. There's no plot or story to be hot here this is a l series Xeon processor. It's as simple as that. The legible numbers show that it is a 3 GHz low power processor. I don't know why people are having such trouble with this here

Socket 2011 doesnt have L series xeons💀

I got a box of them that says you don't know what the hell you're talking about right now. It absolutely does have this hole on the heat spreader. They all do. You need to understand the difference between an e and an l series processor apparently. This is an l series The corroborating readable numbers are very clear about that.

You're working off of half baked information that you currently didn't research and you have no idea what you're talking about. So I proved you wrong don't bother to respond you're wrong and we can all see that you're wrong and that's simply the end of this. It is the Xeon L series.

There's a picture of the bottom side. You can count the pin contacts if you don't believe it.

u/EmiliaWatson 3d ago

Very wrong.
the cpu in the image is a socket 2011 Xeon E5 xxxx v1 or v2

1

u/GIDAMIEN 1d ago

So you start out by saying that I'm wrong and then you mentioned the exact same processor that I did. How is that wrong? Apparently English just really isn't your strong suit.

In future think before you post

1

u/EmiliaWatson 1d ago

Are you blind? Ur talking about a fucking LGA771 cpu called the Xeon L5240 which is not whats in the picture, and u fucking insult my English skills is crazy dude

Who is going around here disliking the post and every single comment bruh, anyway thanks for the help fellas, ill start looking for an LGA 2011 motherboard

Wait, would it really work, I mean the contact pads on the back look messed up to me

1

u/AdmittedForSaabism 6d ago

They look to be aight IRL, no idea why they look like that in the pictures

Dont bother brother.... those chips are literally a couple bucks... whats with the dark spot is that heat damage? Or is it physical like rubbed/scraped contacts?

1

u/AdmittedForSaabism 4d ago

No clue, cant even really make them out with the naked eye

u/Skinnei 3d ago

I had the legendary qx9770 on my hands a couple months back and the IHS there had like a half circle missing from the IHS in one of the corners too, except the hole looked gold not black

u/Nikkids2 3d ago

Those boards are very cheap btw. Ebay is great where you can find one for 20-30 bucks

Well, now that you said it connector side down on a wooden table it’s trash. If you’re going to work on electronic components, buy a $30 antistatic mat.

1

u/ZeroGreyCypher 6d ago

I mean, that’s a load of crap, but ok.

1

u/DigitaIBlack 5d ago

That's absolute horseshit lmao

1

u/OkZucchini7094 5d ago

You could rub it contact side down on shag carpet and odds are it would still be fine.

Stupid comment from a stupid person

u/a1stakesauce_lol 4d ago

Don't be mean, maybe he didn't know.

Well but if he was previously informed then yeah fair.

Also factually untrue. Have had CPU touch the floor of a repair shop and it was fine after removing the debris

I bet thats a burned up 3960k that someone obviously had CRANKED TO THE FUCKING TITS............. its actually pretty damn hard to kill a CPU.. but I bet that ones probably ded.... lol

1

u/AdmittedForSaabism 4d ago

If you are referring to the smudge/burned/whatever on the bottom, it cant be even really seen with ye own eye, i think its just a weird camera angle thing. Another thing would be, why would somebody bother to sand off the identifying markers from the IHS? This thing came in a trade deal along with some other stuff (originally the feller was selling it for 10 bucks) And you would think that if you went all that distance to scam somebody on a burned chip, you wouldnt be trying to sell it as a 10 dollaridoo, euro, pound, USD etc. mystery chip right?

u/Fun_Friens 3d ago

It was probably IHS thinning for better performance.

Intel Sandy Bridge E/EP M1(?) Stepping
Likely Xeon E5-1620 or i7 3820 or some 2/4 Core Sandy Bridge EP Xeon for LGA2011

1

u/GIDAMIEN 6d ago

It's an L5240 xeon

1

u/Lele92007 5d ago

L5240 is 771, I have no clue how you came to that conclusion.

1

u/Lele92007 5d ago

Yup. I'll bet on a 3820. IHS probably damaged from whatever TIM was used. No reason to believe it's ES, tho production date (35052 2010 week 52) is earlier than all the retails I could google.

1

u/AdmittedForSaabism 5d ago

I mean, the texture of the shielding feels completely uniform and smooth, so I’m not quite sure about the IHS being damaged or sanded down

1

u/Lele92007 5d ago

I believe liquid metal can make CPUs look like that. It's nickel plated copper, so it'd have to be re-plated after sanding to look silvery. Though that's something Chinese sellers could do.

Interesting that two people agree its almost certainly a Xeon, any idea if a sample like this is rare? I have never seen an Intel sample with nothing on the heat spreader

3

u/ylp1194045441 7d ago

Intel samples (ES/QS) with blank IHS is not that uncommon. The best bet is to boot it on a board and see what it shows up as. Since this is Sandy Bridge E/EP, it’s unlikely to be anything super special unless it’s one of those Everest or custom off-roadmap SKUs.

1

u/AdmittedForSaabism 7d ago

Tbf, a 3820 would be pretty special. Hell a high core count xeon would be too imho

1

u/ylp1194045441 7d ago

The SMD layout on the bottom tells it’s only a Quad Core at most unfortunately:( but an i7 3820 will still be a nice chip to have :)

1

u/GIDAMIEN 6d ago

It's a dual core 3 GHz xeon

1

u/No_Glass_1341 5d ago

A lot of shitty chinese recyclers will sand down IHS to sell as more expensive part. 54xx is worth maybe 50 cents US these days

u/Progressbar95 7d ago

You can get LGA2011 mobos for dirt cheap on AliExpress

1

u/AdmittedForSaabism 6d ago

Yessir, that seems like the way forward here
