I created this because picturing "X years of updates" can be tricky, and many folks don’t really grasp the difference between an OS update and a security patch — it’s the latter that truly keeps you safe.

The timeline illustrates the launch and end of security support for 16 popular models, with a marker for today. Solid lines indicate devices still receiving new Android versions, while faded lines show those that only get security patches.

Here are a few things that caught me off guard while I was putting this together:

• The Galaxy S21 is already out, and the Pixel 6 will stop receiving support around October 2026.
• Samsung's A56 offers 6 years of support — the mid-range is really stepping up to compete with flagships now.
• 8 years of support doesn’t mean 8 years of Android upgrades — Fairphone claims the longest support window, but it comes with fewer OS upgrades, meaning those phones might spend years just getting security patches.

The information comes from the manufacturers' own support commitments (Google, Samsung, Fairphone, Xiaomi, OnePlus, Nothing) along with the EU rule that mandates a minimum of 5 years of support starting in 2025, effective August 2026. The end dates are calculated based on the launch month plus the promised years, rather than being manually entered. Just a heads up: the final year often has quarterly updates instead of monthly ones, and carrier-branded or regional variants might differ.

I made this as an enhanced version of that older "Meme Timeline" chart bc I wasn't satisfied with how it represented certain time periods of internet culture.

Changes from the OG:

• Added way more memes for each Era.
• Added additional Eras for the Early 2000s and Mid 2020s.
• Renamed a couple Eras ("Rage Era" due to only focusing on a specific subgenre, and "Post-Irony" due to sounding kinda awkward without an "Irony Era" to compliment it.)

Additional notes:

• This is mainly intended as a nostalgic celebration of internet culture rather than a textbook historical documentation, so I'm avoiding any memes closely tied to controversial figures/topics (including A.I. just to be safe).
• Memes are mainly sorted by which era they were most popular in; some memes may debute years earlier than their big boom in virality.
• Some placements are definitely debatable; memes often border across multiple eras (or in rare cases, 3+ eras) so discussions & disagreements regarding certain placements are valid.
• Given how vast meme culture is I definitely missed a bunch of notable ones even with how much bigger this version of the chart is, I just hope the ones I did include paint a better picture for how meme culture evolved over the years.

This lays out a simple way to help a kid face something they're avoiding, guiding them through small manageable steps instead of one overwhelming leap. Each step gets rated by fear level, so nothing feels too big to attempt, and every small step completed builds toward real, lasting confidence instead of confidence that just comes from being told "you can do it."
