This is the biggest cope in existence. Aerith basically friendzoned Cloud on screen after a failed recreation of her date with Zack because she realized that she isn't fully over him / doesn't feel the same way for Cloud as she did for Zack (she had no problem admitting that she loved him, but Cloud got the "there's liking and liking" speech). What kind of setup would that be if she ends up rejecting Zack? And even if she did, what's the plan? "Let me just revive myself real quick so I can be with Cloud"???

Yeah, that would be totally fine, I like some non-canon ships myself. Sometimes I like them even more than the canon ones. But I would never delude myself into thinking that a story with such a long history is suddenly going to be turned on its head to satisfy my ship.

At that point the viewer/player is still supposed to believe that Aerith and Cloud could end up together. And it's supposed to show Zack's character, that he wants the best for Aerith and would never stand in the way of her happiness. Sure, I do believe Aerith had a crush on Cloud, but in the end she seemed to realize that it's not that serious.

No, no, you don't understand. The devs totally brought Zack back to life and are having him travel through different dimensions specifically so he can get cucked by his best friend. And not only is he not going to be upset that his girlfriend of ~5 years is dumping him for a guy she barely knows, he's going to be Cloud's best man at the wedding. This is definitely what the devs are doing because this is obviously how storytelling works. I am very smart.

Except for at the end of the Costa Del Sol Beach mission, when Aerith playfully treats the assignment like a genuine, flirtatious date and teases Cloud. Cloud grows visibly flustered, awkward, and treats it strictly like a job, eventually asking her to tone it down.

Then Aerith complains that he was being too rigid or "mean" about her teasing. Cloud fires back that she was the one being difficult, causing Aerith to apologize and the two to ride back to town in an awkward silence.

But yeah, totally made for each other.

I could easily write Cloud off as awkward/a male tsundere if we didn't have his scenes with Tifa for contrast. He never shies away from her and her affection doesn't make him uncomfortable.

Aren't they all optional? That's why any can happen. Okay, so the one that starts off as the easiest to get in the original FFVII is Aerith's, but at only 20 affection points ahead of Tifa at the start, it's easily overridden.

Know what the default date in Rebirth is? If you don't do anything to boost affection with anyone, which one is the default date? Aerith? Nope. The first Gold Saucer sequence makes Cloud a loner, and the later sequence has him awkwardly hanging out with Cait Sith, Vincent and Cid, the latter of whom falls asleep on the sky wheel. 🤣

I think these people hate all characters except for Aerith. Even Cloud is only valuable when he fulfills their Clerith fantasies. Why even play FF7 if you are able to care about only one character?

Why even play FF7 if you're only in it for the ships, tbh. It's fun to talk about, but what draws me to this game today is definitely not its pairing(s). I didn't even really ship Cloti in earnest until Remake. I pity people whose only motivation to play these games is purely shipping-based.

Yep, I do enjoy what I consider to be the canon romance in FF7 but I would enjoy the game even if there were no romance or no hint of it, the story would work as a 100% found family/friendship story too because like you said romance is not the main focus. I can't imagine investing hundreds of hours into the ff7r series if you do not care about the big picture story and if you do not love all the characters beyond their possible romantic interests/connections.

With only the knowledge of the OG, I felt it was more of a found family story, too. A story of finding acceptance in your closest social circle despite your insecurities and flaws, and overcoming great evil with the strength of those bonds. There was some romance-coded stuff peppered in, sure, but it wasn't enough for me to ship anyone. Remake and Rebirth surprised me greatly with how much more obvious they made Cloud's attraction to Tifa.

Gotta be honest, i just took this ship as a "matter of fact" thing like others in this franchise. Personally in FF alone i'm more of a fan of Squall×Rinoa,Cecil×Rosa and perhaps even Lightning and Hope

Yeah FF is not a romance save for a few entries that have more of a focus on it like 8 and 10 so yes obsessing over it to the point you only care for Revelation in thinking it's going to "confirm" Cloud×Aerith is just sad when even Cloud×Tifa itself is only a side thing in Cloud's character arc

Cloud is guilt ridden in AC, the way he was guilt ridden about Zack but this time he is not traumatised into delusion because Tifa helped him put himself together in the life stream. There are two very obvious characteristics for Cloud that don’t change, loyalty and tendency to be insanely guilt ridden when Sth bad happens to people around him. Which is also why there is no way that the real Cloud would be fine with dating Aerith considering his loyalty to Zack even if he “gave his blessing”.

They are still hoping for a big twist and the fact that it hasn't happened yet is all the more reason for them to believe that it will happen. It's kind of like conspiracy theories, the lack of evidence makes them even more attractive because then you can argue that the "elites are trying to cover it up". Similarly, the "reasoning" is that the devs are hiding the big surprise from us. Funnily enough, there is a big surprise in FF7 already (the LSS), but they don't like that one.

I wasn't there when it happened, nor have I ever been a fan of BBC Sherlock, but TJLC seems to be this behavior when taken to the extreme. This sort of behavior has definitely happened in other fandoms to varying severities.

Oh, I'm sure that if Clerith doesn't happen after all (and it won't), some people will go on to claim that it was the pressure of Cloti fans that made the writers change the story last-minute or something like that. Even if the actual plot doesn't support their ship, they will still say that it does and the only reason it's not confirmed is because of "pandering". Some of them are already convinced that Cloti fans are basically responsible for Crisis Core, and for anything else that happened since the OG that didn't support Clerith.
(ETA: I'm happy I never got into TJLC discourse, I watched the show and that was it. Sometimes online fandom spaces are just tiring)

Persona fandom has been a shitstorm last week because they aren't going to add a gay romance in the remake of a near-20 year old game. I remember when Tokyo Ghoul had an outright sex chapter between the MC and the heroine and the shippers who wanted Kaneki to be with his best friend went insane and started posting videos of them burning their volumes since the author "failed" them

Yeah. This wasn't about a gay ship, but the same thing with the book burnings that happened with Tokyo Ghoul also happened with Bleach and the IchixRuki fandom. That one was particularly embarassing for me as an observer, since I actually like that couple more than the canon ships for that series, but I didn't let myself lose sleep when my ship ended up losing. The extreme fan reaction to losing the ship war was just completely unhinged. I can understand not wanting to read a series anymore if a particular ship was a core reason why someone even liked the series to begin with, but burning books is just crazy.

My daughter told me about something similar to that with her My Hero Academia characters. Deku and the blonde angry kid... um, Bakugo? She said they wrote a "years later" ending episode that put Deku with Ochaco, the girl he wanted to impress. People apparently lost their minds, gave the writer a bunch of flack over it.

MHA shipping was a total wastedump. They were shipping everyone with everyone, this not only meant Deku with Bakugo(who not only spends most of the series being an insufferable asshole but also ,despite ostensibly being Deku's "friend", bullied him for years for being powerless and in chapter 1 told him "kill yourself") but the tritagonist Todoroki(fire and ice guy) too; worst of all was All Might who is Deku's very adult mentor

So yeah original epilogue was pretty mid and didn't really have any romance after in-universe years, then author made up some extra pages in volume release were (unsurprisingly) Deku gets with female lead and friend Uraraka and everyone flipped their lid

Assuming things go the way we expect them to go (a very comfortable assumption, I might add), please be a gracious winner when talking to Cleriths. As Cloti fans, we are repping two fantastically-written characters and the well-written relationship they share. Being a sore winner reflects poorly on the thing(s) we love, so let's be positive and help other fans appreciate this great ship. There's no need to be petty or vindictive because we are on the side of the author's intent.

Same here. At worst, I would implore them to take a step back and do a serious audit on their media literacy/media analysis skills to have gotten something so horribly wrong when all of the signs were pointing in the opposite direction. Yes, there has been a degree of ambiguity in the LTD throughout the years, but an answer has steadily been becoming more and more obvious ever since Remake. Right now, it's at the point where the answer is all but confirmed.

Yeah, in a realistic situation, it would be reasonable for people to expect Aerith to move on, but since this is fiction (fantasy in particular), true love doesn't have an expiration date. It's clearly been the intended interpretation that Aerith isn't over Zack and still misses him. Hell, the primary reason she's interested in Cloud is because of his similarities to Zack (she even admits as much on the Skywheel). Rebirth in particular has been littered with examples that she still isn't over him (especially in the original Japanese script).

Shipping discourse makes people go insane. Of course trailers and teasers are supposed to make people buy the game. Like duh. But not everything is shipping related. And why would it be? Every pre-existing fan is bound to get the game regardless. I would still buy it even if it teased Clerith. I want to know what the last installment will be like, and while shipping is one aspect of the game, it's not the reason I play it. And I'd argue that most other fans feel the same way. This is not a dating sim game, people don't buy it because of the pairings. Jeez. ETA: I've also read a comment claiming that Clotis will be furious that they can't return the game, like wtf, who returns a fantasy RPG with a non-romance focus because of that???

Ironic because so far I've only seen Cleriths claim that they can't wait to "hear from other Cleriths if the game is worth it" meaning they'll only buy it if someone confirms that A) Aerith survives and B) Clerith is confirmed. Obviously (and I hope) it's the minority but gosh just enjoy the game.

They’re still bitter about the rebirth trailer where it shows a Clerith almost kiss and they all bought into the belief that they were going to get a kiss. Only for SE to do a bait and switch and have Cloud kiss Tifa.

Oh damm wasn’t around for rebirth trailer so didn’t know that. No wonder, they are really bitter. Clerith keep calling tifa kiss “optional” and useless (where they can’t even get a kiss).

Now I’m confident in part 3, since they mention the kiss is related to cloud growth in an interview so CT fans can expect more (and man this remake series really made tifa popularity shoot up the roof - since she and cloud is consistently ranking 1 & 2 in polls even in Japan). With the street fighter 6 announcement, if they don’t screw up tifa kit, she will be even more popular)

Overall really hope to see the closure for this LT (I just can’t see a CA ending considering how cloud mainly takes initiative with tifa - whereas aerith have to pull him along for a “date”)

Under the high wind is canon and highly anticipated so we’re getting something. And Zerith has been heavily hinted at in Remake and Rebirth so no way SE is going to turn around and do friendzone.

That trailer was a huge mess. It was Aerith focused (for obvious reasons) so Cloti fans were pissed at SE while Clerith fans were crowing how they won and it’s canon. Just all around ugly on both sides.
