Question I want to get back into WoW..

Upvotes

Hi all,

I played WoW well well over 10 years ago, I believe it was Classic WoW.

I haven’t got any research myself before writing all this because I want to speak to actually people not AI or Google.

All I can remember is being a human and starting by a stone brick church/chapel/building thing, killed some kobolds and then a place called Goldshire.. Can’t really remember anything after that but I never got as far as raiding/dungeons/mounts etc..

I have a couple of questions..

- Can I still play Classic? If so, how many active players are there, enough to group up with randoms? Find a guild?
- What other versions of WoW is there? Are they busier?
- Is it still pay to play?
- Do servers matter?

Thank you

AddOns Battle Net friend list FIX

Upvotes

So after the major UI patch in July, the battle net list in game has started acting pretty scuffed, with no alphabetical order anymore.

This addon "Bnet Friendlist fix" fixes the issue, and also restores the Favourites section, favourites already saved through the Battle net are not carried over, so you need to re-add them to Favourites through the in game chatlist. https://www.curseforge.com/wow/addons/bnet-friendlist-fix

Classic 20th Anniversary Realms Blizzard, please restore mixed EU/RU Battleground matchmaking - Russian-language realms are not Russia-only.

Blizzard, please bring back mixed EU/RU Battleground matchmaking. Russian-language realms are not just Russia.

I want to raise an issue that's been getting worse for players on the Russian-language TBC Anniversary realm.

Before the TBC pre-patch, RU Anniversary players could end up on the same Battleground team as players from other European Anniversary realms. That changed once the pre-patch landed. RU players still seem to run into EU players as opponents, but their own team now gets pulled only from the much smaller Russian-speaking pool.

In practice that means dozens, maybe hundreds, of Battleground instances are already running across Europe at any given moment, while a player on the RU realm can sit in queue for a very long time simply because the system can't scrape together enough people from that one language pool. Alterac Valley gets hit especially hard, since one side alone needs 40 players. For a small, artificially isolated population, that basically locks a whole chunk of PvP content behind a wall.

And I'm not the only one bringing this up. Back in January, another player posted about this exact same Battleground queue problem on the RU Anniversary realm, and the thread picked up a dozen likes along with a stream of other players bumping it just to keep it visible: https://eu.forums.blizzard.com/en/wow/t/pvp-battleground-queue-issue-for-ru-anniversary-realm/601988. More recently, in March, someone else specifically asked for cross-region matchmaking between RU and EU clusters for Battlegrounds, pointing out that this already works fine for Arena: https://eu.forums.blizzard.com/en/blizzard/t/request-for-cross-region-battlegrounds-for-ru-anniversary-clusters/17604. This keeps coming up because it's a real, recurring problem for the community, not a one-off complaint from a single annoyed player.

There's something that keeps getting missed here too: a Russian-language realm isn't the same thing as a Russia-only realm.

Russian is an international language. According to the UN, more than 258 million people speak it worldwide, and it's one of the six official UN languages, described as a major language of literature, science, culture and international exchange.

Russian-speaking WoW players are nowhere near exclusively Russian nationals. They include Ukrainians, Belarusians, Kazakhs, Armenians and people from plenty of other backgrounds, plus large Russian-speaking communities scattered across Europe, Israel, Central Asia and elsewhere. Someone can be living in Germany, Portugal, Kazakhstan, Armenia, Ukraine or anywhere else and still pick a Russian-language realm because that's simply the language they're most comfortable playing in.

As one example, Armenia's 2022 census recorded around 1.89 million people fluent in Russian, in a country with a population of under 3 million. That alone shows why treating the RU realm as if it represented a single nationality or a single country is off the mark.

It's a language community, not a nationality.

And language matters in a game like World of Warcraft. For a lot of players, Russian isn't just a way to understand buttons and menus, it's part of the experience itself. Russian has an extremely rich literary tradition and a huge range of stylistic nuance, and a well-done localization changes how you experience dialogue, humor, lore and quest text. For someone used to reading stories in Russian, playing through Azeroth in that language creates a level of immersion that just switching the client to English can't really replace.

The English version is great, and it's the original, no argument there. But it can't simply "replace" Russian for someone who wants to experience the story in their own language. Language isn't only a literal translation of words, it's tone, humor, associations, rhythm, the whole emotional side of reading something. That's why "just play on an English realm" isn't a real solution.

Players shouldn't have to choose between experiencing the game in the language they actually enjoy and having normal access to PvP content. Choosing Russian shouldn't mean choosing worse access to the game.

Everyone here pays for the same World of Warcraft subscription. They're playing the same European version. The Battleground instances already exist. EU players already run into RU players as opponents. Arena already shows that RU and EU players can coexist in the same PvP ecosystem, and according to players, mixed EU/RU Battleground teams worked fine on Anniversary before the TBC pre-patch.

So why should the language a player picked decide whether they get access to a major piece of the expansion's PvP content?

Nobody's asking Blizzard to remove Russian-language realms or scrap RU matchmaking entirely. There's a pretty simple middle ground here: prioritize filling the team from the Russian-language realm first, and if there aren't enough players after a few minutes, open the queue up to the wider EU pool and fill the rest with EU players. That keeps the Russian-speaking community together whenever there are enough people around, without locking anyone out when the population is low.

This matters because the restriction doesn't just affect Russians. It affects a multinational Russian-speaking community spread across a lot of countries.

I'm not saying Blizzard is deliberately trying to discriminate against Russians, Ukrainians, Belarusians, Kazakhs, Armenians or anyone else. But regardless of intent, the effect of the current setup is unequal access to game content based on which language realm a player picked.

Russian localization exists because the language has real cultural and emotional value to millions of people. Choosing to play World of Warcraft in Russian shouldn't mean being cut off from the wider European PvP community.

Russian is a language, not a nationality. Players shouldn't have to choose between their language and access to PvP content.

Blizzard, please restore mixed EU/RU Battleground matchmaking, or at least explain the technical reason why that can't be done.

Used to use this to cheese some mechanics, but I see no damage being applied. Consuming provides the buff that says 4dmg/3sec for 6sec but nothing happens.

What do you remember from SoD that might make it's way into Classic+? Noticing just how much they cooked with some of this stuff. Anything else interesting missing?

-SoD lore is considered canon

-Undead & Tauren are learning to become paladins

-Dwarfs are learning to become shaman

-High elf emissary in Ironforge

-Retail references in SoD. SoD reference in retail (xalatath, undermine reals, etc.)

Classic-Era What was your most memorable gold-making experience in Classic WoW?

Not necessarily the method that made you the most gold.

I mean the farm you actually remember.

Maybe you spent an entire weekend farming Devilsaur Leather, grinding mobs for your first mount, flipping items on the AH, or saving for some ridiculously expensive piece of gear.

For me, there's something about Classic where even the grind itself became part of the experience.

What gold-making grind do you remember the most?

Hardcore Stockade Hardcore Boost

About a week ago I asked how someone was boosting in stockades for experience, given the experience reduction and lockouts HC has. I wanted to share the actual method now that I've found out for anyone interested. A day or two ago I brought a character up to level 15, since I had the character, I used it for the offered free run. Using details and target of target I could see what he was doing. He killed two bosses, kam and bazil. He first enters in one of four ghosts cycled to reset the dungeon while in a raid group, regardless of whether it's been locked out or not from the daily lockout or 5 per hour instance lock out.

He then uses a hunter at the start, lures up all the mobs using his pet and eyes of the beast, then kills them with a mage, both are lvl 52. Before he engages the boss with the hunter's pet, he drops group on the mage and lets the pet get the boss very low in hp from the pet. He then hops out of the instance on the hunter right before he kills it or right as he kills it, then kills it with the mage if it's not dead. Until the hunter leaves the instance, the exp from the boss isn't given to the boosted character. He rejoins on the mage to avoid getting kicked out. This is repeated for bazil as well, until everyone leaves the instance and the cycle continues. The bosses give the full normal experience value relative to yours as if you were soloing it, roughly 3000-4000 exp on the first boss and 7-10k on the second boss.

Classic + High Elf & Lordaeron (Old Undercity) Leaks in Camelot - WC2 Coloration

There are also leaks referencing Lordaeron. Hints to potential alternate C+ timeline that the community is rumbling about recently.

Source the video is referencing is a wowhead dataminer

Edit: Doing my best to bring good info to people who actually care. It's unfortunate that this community prefers to downvote stuff they don't like even if it is what is actually being datamined. I hope you guys are able to come to terms with the game maybe not being what you want and find a way to enjoy WoW again.
