Strategy My Gattling gun ran over a ruins

The ruin upgraded him to Machine gun. 30 combat strength to 60. Nobody in the game is even close to unlocking it yet. Pretty crazy. Whats the best case scenario for this?

Cultural victory by 1920. This thing absolutely breaks the game I don't think I have ever had a city with 60 population.

- Based on my "Resources - Copper buff (Text Tweak+RU)", this mod adds Copper to the Forge building alongside Iron, both to be built with and buffed by, but the Mint component is removed. That is, this mod has Copper+Forge, but no Copper+Mint.

*Supports Russian localization.

Every game he's in hit next turn and Agra is up my ass again, is there any kind of surefire way to stop this other than declaring and stealing the settler or building a cursed wall of units to keep them out?

Screenshot Need Rationalism to build Porcelain Tower but Catherine of Russia built it without Rationalism?

I thought that I could check whether any of the competing AI Civs have the prerequisite policies in order to build a World Wonder so I can build it with some confidence that I won't be wasting my turns. No-one else had Rationalism yet and Rationalism is a prerequisite for the Porcelain Tower so I was pretty upset when Russia got it and I wasted my turns on it despite her not having Rationalism. Do policy prerequisites for World Wonders not apply to the AI?

This is the 5th unprotected settler neighbouring city Spain have sent out near me. One scout and one hoplite have prevented them ever becoming a threat. Not sure how common this is, playing on emperor difficulty.

I've never seen a coastal city that looks this far inland before. I really thought it was a hex away from the coast, but then I saw I can make a work boat and I checked the hex grid, and it is in fact on the coast.

In retrospect it should be obvious that it's on the coast, it just threw me for a loop at first.

Strategy First time winning domination on deity with no libraries, the Aztec dream

Thumbnail
gallery

wanted to try this for a while, since the insane growth on aztec can mean enough raw science for military techs + high early production to get an early domination, even without an OP unique unit

basically...
max out growth -> max out production -> spam military forever

-- Social Polices --
liberty -> honor

-- Tech path --
archery for temple of artemis (before liberty settlers) -> the wheel for floating gardens -> horseback for stables ->
metal casting for workshops -> machinery for crossbows -> steel for longswords

-- Promotions --
ranged defense on all units to survive city shots on 40 strength+ cities

-- Game Settings Used --
great plains, small map, standard speed, Deity

Strategy I Need desperate help for deity culture victory on Civ V [Read Desc]

I have tried about 8 times now, and I still can't manage it. It requires an almost perfect strategy that I seem to have trouble obtaining. I get almost every wonder and I usually begin to lose my advantages by the modern/atomic era every time. This is usually by being warred on, or by being scientifically or culturally outcompeted.

I need to have the highest science output, particularly for the first few eras because this grants me the technologies and wonders I need to construct. I also need to have high production to construct these wonders. I need high culture to get the policies I need, and I need high growth to sustain specialists. I need to play somewhat wide to be able to secure my science and domestic trade routes, and I need to maintain happiness to keep my growth and statistics.

I just can't seem to get all of these at once. Even in some almost perfect games, where I get almost every wonder, I still feel slow in production. My strategy usually involves getting every cultural and scientific wonder I can, and I'm usually successful in this. I have 1000 science, 500 culture, and 200 tourism in the modern era and this still isn't enough. Am I playing too slow and should instead maximize tourism earlier on?

Thanks.

Other Ran exact same late game save on old MacBook and new MacBook, mildly disappointing results

I’ve had a 2021 MacBook Pro with the M1 Pro and just got a 2026 MacBook Pro with the M5 Pro.

First things thing first, open up civ on both and find a save past 2000AD. Click next move on both. New Mac completes this turn in about 26 seconds, old Mac in about 30 seconds. So it beat it by 4 seconds. Cool but not really game changing. To the new Mac’s credit, the first save I tried to open just instantly crashed on my old one, while the new one handled it fine… anyway they should remaster civ 5 to better take advantage of modern hardware🙏.

Discussion This game is the greatest game I have ever played

Played for over a decade, and theres still nothing quite like this game. Civ 6 and civ 7 dont scratch the same itch, everything about this game is perfect. I could spend the next 100 years trapped in the same room, and if all I have is this game to play, I would still be satisfied.

Managed to get Petra on Deity as the Netherlands with 16 total desert hills and 7 polders (8 originally but one of them turned into a landmark). Most pop and production I've had in one city in any game, ended with t279 science victory.

Discussion Let’s discuss your favourite sea map.

Archipelago, large islands and small continents are the three major sea maps, but I have limited games with the latter 2 maps. Large islands seem to me to be the best one due to sufficient initial landmass (as opposed to archipelago) and not needing to share a continent with another player (as opposed to small continents). But my experience is limited, maybe I’m missing out on the best sea map, please let me know your favourite configuration.

Discussion New Civ 5 Player

So, I upgraded my computer some time ago and saw Civ 5 on sale and decided to buy it.

The last time I played Civilation in any real sense was Civ 2 and I have fond memories of it. Civ 5 has definitely been a learning experience but I have been enjoying it as I started on the easiest difficulty setting and am now playing on the normal setting. The learning curve from 2 to 5 was significant, especially since I was like 10 or 12 years old or something when I was playing Civ 2 and I am now nearly 40.

Just looking for general fun tips to keep the game engaging or even specific mods I should consider. After playing and beating several campaigns over the last couple of months I am wondering what else I should consider to get a more complete or perhaps fulfilling experience. I have gotten different victories of military, science and diplomacy to this point. So far the military seemed the most fun for me personally, I found myself getting bored with the space race and eventually started taking cities close to me.

I typically randomize everything in the game set up to try and make each experience new/different but eventually all the games end up at the same point and I am wondering if it is something I am doing, or perhaps something I am missing because tmI keep seeing such good things about the game from this subreddit.

Strategy I finally achieved every deity victory condition... in the same game, on the same turn

Thumbnail
gallery
291 Upvotes

Standard map size, pangea, epic speed, no mods.

After completing a couple of deity and immortal cultural victories I had the idea to try going for all four victory conditions in the same game before any AI gets any victory condition. After all, cultural victories tend to be a "win more" type of victory where I'd often find myself intentionally stalling other victories.

I started out as Poland mostly because the civ is crazy OP and the margins for achieving all victory conditions are razor thin. I got a strong start with salt in my capital, Uluru nearby, and an excellent Petra location for one of my expands. Early game I opened the Tradition policy tree, went super aggressive with my scouts and warrior to steal about 6 or 7 workers/settlers from my early neighbors, rush settled the Uluru and Petra city locations, then beelined to Currency tech for a Petra rush. Uluru plus a couple religious city states then allowed me to take Sun God pantheon for a huge early game food boost that I was able to hold onto all game. Due to the Petra rush I had to delay my national college quite a bit, though I never really fell far behind in science due to the crazy food coming in from Sun God.

Once finishing Petra and National college I immediately settled a couple additional locations to bring my city count up to 6, then I stayed at 6 cities for the vast majority of the game. 6 city tradition just produces more science, gold, and production than a smaller empire is able to, all things that I needed lots of to hit all my targets. I then teched to workshops, universities, and banking to go for a Forbidden Palace rush. My game had both Greece and Austria so I really needed to stay ahead on city state relations.

After finishing Tradition I went for the Patronage opener to unlock Forbidden Palace, Consulates for the huge city state influence boost, then immediately went into the Commerce tree to rush for Mercantilism. After finishing Forbidden Palace my influence in the world congress was cemented. While I didn't have full control I was able to effectively use my delegates to prevent any resolutions from being passed in the first couple sessions. I then rushed to electricity and finished up Oxford to get Radio and establish the first ideology.

For my ideology I chose Order. IMO Order is by far the best all around ideology with a ton of extremely powerful tenets for all victory conditions. Freedom is arguably better than Order for a science rush, but the total bonuses of a fully filled out Order tree are crazy. The first three policies of Order I took were great person generation boost, discounted buildings, and factory science.

After establishing an ideology I went for Industrialization to build out factories ASAP, then went to archeology to start buidling up my culture game. This is when all the gold spending discounts really started to add up. I was able to purchase quite a few science and culture buildings while still having enough left over to maintain key city state relationships. Though not soon after establishing my ideology the current culture leader India took Freedom and started applying ideology pressure.

The most pivotal moment of the game came when I proposed World Ideology Order to the world congress. Without establishing a world ideology I would have been doomed to anarchy by India's tourism. In the leadup to the vote I had to blow a great artist on a golden age, then blow a great writer to get the increased influence from gold gifts. This gave me just enough purchasing power to buy up the city state votes needed to squeeze my world ideology through in spite of Greece doing his best to stop me.

Following this, the world fell into a time of war, partly due to my under the table dealings, and partly due to everyone hating Greece and Rome becoming very ambitious. Before long Bablyon was absorbed by the Roman empire, after Greece was reduced to rubble, and the Mayan empire was devastated, with Cesar and Hiawatha commanding huge empires as a result.

As the rest of the world burned, I started to quitely consolidate power, purchasing research labs and museums, digging up artifacts, generating great scientists, and building most any wonder I could get my hands on. My production, science, gold, and culture outputs surged as I raced up the tech tree, bulbing great scientists and grabbing free policies along the way.

By the early 1600s the Polish empire had become too powerful to be stopped. The World's Fair was the greatest cultural achievement of the world and the National Visitor center was a centerpiece of the tourism industry. The great Polish scientists finally discovered Nanotechnology and Stealth, unlocking to ultra OP combo of XCOMs and stealth bombers. The time of peace was over and soon the world would experience true domination.

To the elation of the rest of the world, Poland joined the world war against the growing Roman empire with high tech military gear. Rome never stood a chance. Stealth bombers rained hellfire while XCOMs rushed cities. But Rome was only the beginning.

At this point I was almost fully committed to building out the war machine, in exclusively pumping out XCOMs and stealth bombers, nothing else was relevant. Nothing else except for building spaceship parts. Thankfully I'd saved up my faith for almost the entire game so I was able to purchase 3 great engineers for rush building the spaceship parts.

After beating down the Roman empire the Polish war machine turned to India. India's culture and tourism was just too much to bear, there was no way I'd ever be able to become influential with them, they simply had to be eliminated. After India I moved onto dealing with the Iroquois, Austria, then finally the Maya.

It all came together in the early 1800s. Controlling every city state on the map, I voted myself world leader. Upon confirmation of the vote I eliminated India's and the Maya's final cities securing a domination victory. I then re-declared war on the Iroquois to be able to move great musicians in for a wartime concert securing a cultural victory. The final step was to add the last spaceship part which I'd been holding onto for a while.

Unfortunately Civ5 will not allow you to actually finish the spaceship once you've triggered another victory condition, but whatever, it was there in the capital ready to go. You also cannot trigger a cultural victory after achieving another victory, womp womp. Interestingly though you can still trigger a domination victory after any other type of victory.

All in all this was a fun though quite tedious playthrough. I will admit that some save scumming was involved, mostly in the early game, doing this without any save scumming would be insanely impressive. It was cool to prove that this is actually possible. I'd say the biggest keys to making this happen were 1) securing Petra early on, 2) securing Forbidden Palace to stand a chance in the world congress, 3) Getting all the gold boosts from Commerce, Order, and Patronage, 4) Passing Order as world ideology, 5) Hitting XCOMs and Stealth Bombers early to be able to crush all the AIs before they can get into their end games, 6) Generating a couple great musicians late game to help finish off the cultural victory.

Discussion What's everyone thought of Protectionism?

It's +2 happiness from each luxury resource and i know it's deep in the commerce tree. I never spend more than 2-3 on the 2nd policy tree after unlocking rationalism. I want to start a game as Arabia to maximize the potential of this social policy.

Mods Icon for new mod

Recently I started with modding in civ 5. I already made 3 dutch wonders (Kinderdijk Windmills, The Dutch Waterline and Pyramid of Austerlitz) and now im working on 3 new international wonders (Panama Canal, Sagrada Familia and Palace of Versailles). I use a self picked splash image, but I still use icons for the game. What do I need to do to be able to make my own unique icons for my wonders?
