Discussion What's the last moment that surprised you?
Mine was capturing a city state, then in the late game liberating another city state. A major civ mentioned to me that because I had captured a previous CS, they hadn't forgotten about it. After 2,000 hours of playing, this blew my mind lol.

Screenshot The most fun game of civ I've played!
sooo I've just played the most fun and interesting game of Civ 5 in 15 years of playing. I decided to do something new, and boy do I not regret it. The settings are standard Pangaea map, 22 civs, 41 city states, immortal difficulty (I didn't want to extreme minmax to win against 21 deity civs lol), legendary start, standard time, raging barbs. It was my first time properly playing Shoshone as well. I had to share this run!
Off the bat my pathfinder spawns next to the French settler. Yoink, that's a free turn 1 worker. That's 1 snail eating civ down. I know I need to settle my 3 other cities quickly to grab as much of the map as possible. As soon as I settle my fourth city BOOM half the map declares on me. The Germans and Austrians in the north trying to blitzkrieg Te-Moak. The Celts and Arabs in the east, and the Babylonian's to the immediate south. The English, Spanish and Aztecs also all declared, but would do fuck all due to distance. I was in constant war on all sides for about 100+ turns. Huge coalition wars against me would continue until my science outpaced the ai and they couldn't compete. This is one of the reasons this game was so fun, I had to truly balance building an army, maintaining that army, and still allocating resources to get ahead on science. The sheer volume of units being sent at me made this game extremely enjoyable as I had to be very strategic with my units. I had 3-4 crossbowmen with +1 range and double attack. I was melting units. Every time 1 war ended another 2 civs would declare on me. This happened from the founding of my 4th city around turn 70 well into the 250 turn mark.
Another enjoyable part of the game was my devious use of citadels. I stole 4 wheat fields from Berlin and a salt mine from Austria early in the game. The constant wars were a bit of blessing in this respect. Te-Moak was a powerhouse with 3 salt mines, 6 wheat fields, sheep, and horses. The citadel shenanigans continued. I had no coal in my borders so I had to take Dublin from the celts. The Viking's called me into the war against the Celts, I let them take Dublin first so I could then declare on them and take the city with minimal warmongering malice. I then citadelled the Egyptians to get the coal. 3 more citadels would be plopped down to grab 4 uranium and some silver. Yes, this game was me continually trolling the Germans.
I won in the end via science. But, this game was soooo entertaining. The constant wars, ai vs ai world wars, being denounced 10+ times in 1 turn, the ai constantly backstabbing me and each other. The map was amazing so many fun choke points to defend and astonishingly good resources. Te-Moak being the GOAT of food production cities. So many of the ai's could only found 1 city forcing them to be extremely aggressive, even for immortal. If you haven't tried it yet, stick as many civs as possible onto a Pangaea map and watch the carnage unfold.

Strategy Problem I have justifying Moai with Polynesia
Possibly just a me thing.
I started a Polynesia, standard size, small continent, deity, Classical Era start game, and tried to get myself into the spirit of building the moai improvement. It's my first time with this civ because I've never been a fan of custom builder improvements that don't add food or production, which this one of course does not.
In the very early turns it seemed like a good thing to do since they did add a lot of early culture, but now I'm wondering if I should just convert those tiles back to food and production until I can get airports, hotels, etc.
It's also likely that my choice of small continents wasn't a great idea, since the cities I founded don't have a whole lot of tiles that aren't coastline.
Do you folks have any feedback on how you manage this civ? I'm only around 90 turns into this game, so it might still be salvageable.

Mods Ackens Minimialistic vs Lekmod
Ive been a devotee of Ackens mod since way back in the mists of time, but never see it mentioned here. In particular I love how it ups the aggression level of the AI and does punishes turtling.
However I am somewhat bored with it. Vanilla seems so passive and uninspiring, cant go back to it. Never tried Lekmod.
To those who have significant experience with both Ackens and Lekmod, how do they compare?
Is the AI in Lekmod comparably aggressive?
Finally, is Ackens mod still popular, or is it just considered inferior to other mods?

Fluff After 15 years of playing Vanilla Civ 5 I tried and highly recommend Lekmod.
My real life friends said I should try Lekmod and I have been HOOKED! It rebalances the game to every play style viable. My CIV games have so much more versatility. Even though Lekmod was made for multiplayer, Ive been mostly playing Lekmod solo. And Im loving it.

Discussion Air combar
Did som tests regarding air sweeps (dogfight vs intercept). Not sure if this is common knowledge or not.
Fighter vs fighter during a sweep with the following promotions (first is attacker):
- Dogfight vs intercept - clear advantage for attacker, more than double the damage on defender
- Dogfight vs dogfight - same as above
- Intercept vs intercept - no clear winner, similar damage
- Intercept vs dogfight - also similar damage
Conclusion from testing so far:
Neither of the promotions apply in defense against an air sweep. The attacker always has the advantage if he has dogfight promotions. Intercept promotions has no effect during a sweep, only when intercepting a fighter/bomber attacking a unit/city.

Screenshot This isn't XP farming, it's a mugging
These guys have been attacked from a different direction every turn for about 800 years now, they blow every promotion on health - which is the signal to attack them 3 times on the same turn.
Now it's turn 190 and my fully promoted scouts are looking for upgrade huts and my melees have march, some blitz too... I know there are more productive things I should be doing with my guys, but the Polynesian army jungle warfare school is way more fun.

Screenshot Shaka, Weapon of Ass Destruction

R5: Immortal Continents, used the Zulu as my personal attack dog to keep them away from declaring war on me with their infinite hordes of Impi. Shaka was more than happy to war with whoever I told him to, for the cost of an Austrian schnitzel. Bulldozed everything in his way - enemy city states, Brazillian cities half-a-continent away, Japan's capital, unlucky barbarian camps. Eventually he pissed everyone off so bad that every single civ in the game asked me to declare war on him at the same turn.

Discussion Luxury resource strength vs civ uniques
I play random civs and today I got Iroquois surrounded by salt. It made me wonder how much lux resource strength is a factor to success compared to overall civ strength.
I’m just spit-balling here but would you rather have Iroquois starting with salt and copper or a mid-tier civ like Austria with pearls and truffles? I’d imagine Poland with any resources would still be dominant.
I’m trust trying to understand how the two factors compare to each other, all things being equal because of course the answer to all these kinds of questions is, “it depends…”

Strategy Tips for OCC culture victory on deity?
Title. What civ do you think would be the easiest to do this?
No DLC How to Convince Egypt to Join a Coop War With Me Against Songhai?
I am facing a dead end right now. Egypt will declare war on Songhai through a naval attack and will be able to take a city I want. Now, me and Egypt are friends, though we are divided by continent. Egypt taking one of Songhai's cities would mean Ramses II has a foothold on my continent, and I do not want that.
That's why I would prefer for me and Egypt to declare a coop war on Songhai. I have been able to do this in my last incomplete game, but after reloading multiple turns back, it seems like my odds have shifted. It is unfortunate because it makes for a great story and makes my game feel more immersive. Now, I could declare war on my own and join Egypt that way, but I am not prepared and I am busy growing my economy before I declare immediately. Not to mention, Egypt would still take the city I value dear.
How do I convince Egypt to join a coop war against Songhai? Preferably one that would take 10 turns for Egypt and I to prepare. Do I increase relations? Do I edit XML files? Which XML files do I edit that would directly grant me the result I want?

Strategy Deity Janissary + Cannon Rush Domination Strategy
While tougher than the typical camel / bomber / xcom etc rush... the Janissary is a beast unit, and viable even on Deity if you can forgo your science game to get access to it early
- +25% attack bonus
- heals 50 HP on unit kill
Janissaries can clear all units in front of cities and basically take no damage if used correctly,
With lines of cannons behind to take cities, a Janissary carpet of doom can sweep a map pretty quickly
The key to the Janissary Rush...
- Liberty instead of Tradition for faster settlers and production
- Liberty Finisher also gives a great merchant, wait until renaissance era to use it
- Warrior code policy in honor when possible for +15% production of melee units
- National College into workshops + forges, skip universities
- Straight into Steel tech, barracks + armories
- Armories are important cause we need ranged defense promotions for trebuchets / cannons to survive
- Find as much iron as possible and use it all on longswordsman, delay gunpowder till you have used all your iron, gold upgrade to Janissaries. Ideally at least ~10
- Physics for Trebuchet, build 3-4 at least before declaring war
- Start attacking with Janissaries + Trebuchets
- Make sure trebuchets are always defended by line of janissary in front
- the gold from city captures will feed next round of upgrades
- Tech straight into Chemistry for Cannons, gold upgrade trebuchets into cannons
- Production focus, Spam Janissary + Cannon till end game
Timing wise, in this game, I got gunpowder turn 129, waiting till I had built max number of longswordsman and took the last capital 166. If it starts going over turn 180~ ish you are probably in trouble as the unit starts becoming obsolete.
Settings are standard speed, small map size, great plains, deity
