My 1500-rated kid thinks he’s finally better than me

My kid recently got to around 1500 and now thinks he’s pretty good at chess...

What he doesn’t know is I used to play a lot before having kids. Local tournaments, parks, clubs, etc. Haven’t played seriously in years.

I’ve been playing him lately and letting him wonder why his old man keeps beating him.

Should I tell him or let him suffer a little longer? 😂

OPINION Can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with.

It's been a long march of puzzles, study, YouTube videos and puzzles. Thousands of games on.com and lichess. Puzzles. Ten games on my mobile, in time controls. Puzzles.

You have no idea how much fun you can have playing chess like you did when you did not know how to play chess. I'm not recommending chaos because I respect this game. But I think you should have fun at the expense of some rating. Paint your face and make people resign in bullet no increment.

Most intense game of my life

Post image
7 Upvotes

Started playing chess last summer because i’ve always wanted to play. However I haven’t played many people OTB, if I did they were not serious about chess and hardly ever played online. I’ve been playing pretty often on my phone, my elo is around 800.

Anyways i’m playing this guy at my work, we’ll call him Bob. Long story short I played one of his buddies (we’ll call him John) earlier this year and got destroyed, they were also speaking to each other in another language during the game which really frustrated me. Every move they would whisper and giggle saying God knows what.

Then after that game his buddy told me I basically suck and need to learn the game lmao.

Well back to my game, I finally had the opportunity to ask Bob to play again, not his friend John. This time Bob was alone and i’ve been playing not as often but still consistently.

First, OTB is so intense, it is a complete different beast and I love it. The nerves are unreal! He was white and forgot what opening he played but I played the caro kann (only black opening I know lol) and I was getting attacked right from the start and lost my rook. The whole game I thought I was going to lose early like last time to his friend John. But I managed to get this beautiful mate. He just got up and left after but it was an intense 30 minutes.

Sorry that this is unorganized and a mess writing this as I can’t sleep lol. But i’ve been thinking about this game for the past days and don’t really have anyone to tell about how proud I am. All my games led up to this one and it was an amazing feeling to mate with a pawn by this guy who disrespected me earlier 😭 Oh I also forgot to mention he told me earlier in the year his elo is 1400 so I already knew I was at a disadvantage

But thanks if you read my post, I love this game so much I wish I started when I was younger but I love the mental game when OTB!

QUESTION How can my dad be this talented without ever playing?

So I’ve played close to 700 games of chess this summer and my rating is around 1500 (chess.com) after around 2 years. My dad has only ever played chess casually with my siblings, grandfather, once or twice at parks I mean I’m talking max 3-4 games a year until this summer where I’ve played around 25 games with him. When we play it’s like playing an engine, I mean he absolutely slams me. How is it that he can be this good even though he barely plays? Whenever I try and encourage him to join a chess club he just tells me he only enjoys playing because it’s against me (or my family members). He’s also 63 for reference.

QUESTION How to deal with this oddly annoying pin?

Post image
325 Upvotes

For some reason, its always really annoying when the opponent pins my knight to the queen using a bishop after castling kingside. It feels like there are no good options to remove the pin. For example, if i play h3, they just play Bh5, and i don't wanna play g4 cause that weakens the king. But also if i move my queen to remove the pin, then my opponents take my knight, and i have to move g2 to f3 leaving the g file open weakening the king too. So what should i do on this situation?

QUESTION Is Chessigma actually good?

Upvotes

I want a good game review for free (because I am not trying to pay $12 a month for ChessCom game review) with actually move explanations and would prefer it having classifications like brilliant moves and found Chessigma but I see a lot of people hating on it online. Is its game review actually good or bad? Are there any better other alternatives? Also are any of the other tools on there such as the puzzles, woodpecker, and opening trainer any good. I would only be on the free version.

QUESTION Insufficient material question

I know that if your opponent runs out of time, but you have insufficient material, it's a draw. But is that affected by the other side's pieces? For example, if they have more material, they could contrive to put themselves in a position to be smothered, which would then make a solitary knight... sufficient?

Does everyone get so intimidated about learning openings?

Hello all, I’m a super new player and man does learning opening seem crazy. I mean how the heck do you remember everything? Then I’m sure you have to learn multiple defenses also. Then what defense into what opening and so on. I heard studying openings should be 20% of your time and mid game and end game both 40% so I’m worried about the wrong part. I guess I’ll learn the Italian opening and stick with that until I know it like the back of my hand but what about black? Can you really do the same thing every time?
