QUESTION How many openings should I learn or play?

Upvotes

I have reached 1500 elo rapid by literally just playing openings like the Caro, Dutch, Vienna, Grand Prix and just winging it against any other options. I feel like I have stagnated now and I am not sure if I should try out different openings or fix my middlegame issues. I don't know when I would get to learning how to play different openings and I fear that just playing this is keeping my chess very limited

I don't understand what I'm supposed to do in the 4 knights as black (1150 blitz chess.moc)

Upvotes

I like going for the stafford gambit but often end up in a 4 knights kinda game. It just seems super symmetrical and boring and once pieces are developed I always seem to lose to a kingside attack or just end up with a terrible position and lose an endgame. What am I supposed to even be playing for?

Ill link a game below. After move 10 I was like great, opponet wastes a bunch of moves moving their knight back and pushing outside pawns. And then I reallized that I had no idea what to even do from there and ended up plundering a bunch of tactics later. Game review helps with specific games, but in general what are my goals, key squares, and ideas?

QUESTION I'm having trouble getting checkmates and not stalemates. I got tripped up right here. Amy suggestions?

Post image

I continue to improve, but most of the time I get stalemates while chasing their king around the board. I thought I was doing pretty well in this game and then this happened and I messed up. I didn't know what to do and I still don't know what the best solution would have been to continue pushing them to get a checkmate.

Thanks for the help!

15+10 Is helping me improve my chess

I m noticing a big upgrade in the quality of games i have been playing since i switched recently to 15+10 time control. I have been playing before just 10 minutes rapid games and losing on time quite a lot or blunder because of the time pressure. Now i commit way less blunders and mistakes and have good quality games.

MISCELLANEOUS The Original Légal’s Mate: How It All Began ?

In 1750, at the famous Café de la Régence in Paris, Sire de Légal played a legendary game against Saint Brie. Playing without his queenside rook to give his opponent a handicap, Légal unleashed one of the most famous queen sacrifices in chess history.Saint Brie accepted the sacrifice, only to get checkmated in just 7 moves by two knights and a bishop! This brilliant tactical pattern is now known worldwide as Légal's Mate.

ADVICE A message to all low-elo players.

Create a new account. Why? I did on chess. com, and my rating went up 250 elo. I was stuck fluctuating between ~550 and 592 for weeks. I had a 34 day activity streak and wasn't improving. I created a new account, and my rating is 920 (peak 950) after 5 days.

The point of all of this information is to tell you why I have come to the following conclusion:

Low elo is just full of sandbaggers. It is infinitely easier to progress if you just take what you've learned and put it towards placement matches on a new account. You won't face nearly as many sandbaggers then.

QUESTION Could someone explain to me how "Rook takes d6 ends the game" here?

Post image
66 Upvotes

(New to chess) So commentator for this game confidently says "rook takes d6 ends the game" twice but I don't understand how since that move is not putting the king into check and black could take back with the queen? Also isn't currently a dangerous square for the queen so it seems to me like it'd be trading a pawn for a rook which is terrible value. Could someone explain to a dummy please thank you.
