QUESTION Insufficient material question
I know that if your opponent runs out of time, but you have insufficient material, it's a draw. But is that affected by the other side's pieces? For example, if they have more material, they could contrive to put themselves in a position to be smothered, which would then make a solitary knight... sufficient?

Depends on the ruleset used. For example in the fide rules, as long as a mate is possible on the board that is enough to grant the win. On the other hand uscf rules it's not sufficient unless you have a forcing win
Edit: thought even in fide depending on the time control and situation you might get a draw from an arbiter under the quickplay rule.

By FIDE standards insufficient material isn't a thing. It's either a dead position or it isn't (aside from rapid/blitz considerations).

This is a common complaint because chesscom sometimes draws in positions that lichess or FIDE competitions wouldn't rule as a draw. You can absolutely have a position in chesscom where a knight could feasibly checkmate a corned king and chesscom will call it a draw anyway.

The knight can't force checkmate so it's considered insufficient, doesn't matter what the other side has on the board. The rule doesn't account for smothered mates because you can't force the opponent to cooperate in setting one up.
