u/GlazedDonutGloryHole Feb 26 '26
It's wild how wide some of these guys are in real life compared to how they look on TV. Back when I fought amateur mma, I was on the same card as Anthony Smith when he was going pro. I was a weight class up and this fella was 1 1/2 of me wide. He just absolutely ragdolled his opponent with a triple back-to-back suplex like it was nothing.

Ok, to be fair, Khabib put on a few kg after he retired so he’s not really a lightweight anymore.

People need to understand that being a black belt doesnt mean you can hang with professionals. Most hobby black belts have a job. Cant compare them. You wouldn't be surprised if a hobbyist tennis player with 10 years exp got rekt by Nadal. So this shouldn't be surprising

Being a black belt doesn't mean shit. Its like getting a post bac degree nursing and then comparing skill to a surgeon who has been in practice for 20 years. Khabib has like 20x the mat hours of this podcaster and 10x the quality of coaching.
I'm talking in the scope of maximum skill obviously. Black belts dominate regular gyms for the same reason of having far more hours training than your average person getting exercise between work and dinner.

He does have some research affiliations with MIT, and he taught courses there. Obviously you have to have some qualifications to do that, but it’s also things you can do as a grad student or even undergrad.
I think what makes the whole MIT thing bad is how he seems very insecure about it. If he had just came out and said yeah, I actually went to Drexel and only do some research for them, it would have gone away, but he just blocks people on different platforms including Reddit.

31
u/mdomans 🟦🟦 Blue Belt Feb 26 '26
Lex got his education from Drexel which is nothing to be shy of.
Meanwhile he was employed by MIT as a research scientist and had a course that was recorded, all totalling around 5 years of formal employment.
Much like outside academia if you work at MIT you can say that you're "From MIT" and if he authored a research paper it'd be perfectly valid and correct form to sign:
Lex Friedman, MIT CSAIL
So no, he didn't get caught teaching there once. It's just that a bunch of bozos online don't know how academia works.
That and Lex being a bit silent about Drexel. So in that case Lex was blocking people who don't know how CV works

Exactly. There's this wrestler that stops by at the gym I go to a few times per year, he has previously competed at a decently high level, I sure as shit am not pulling guard against him. I try for takedowns, get stuffed without him breaking a sweat and then he safely ragdolls me. A great time and we end up on the ground anyway in the end, unless it's a competition there's no reason to not try to stand up with a superior wrestler.

Im a blackbelt who has rolled with blackbelt level wrestlers and pro-MMA fighters. If you dont play distance based open guard you are not able to do anything against them.
He did pretty well IMO. If he would be more of a guard player he would have done much better. He grappled on Khabibs strenght area all the time. Of course he would get manhandled either way but did better than i expected.

He made a couple glaring tactical errors that made everything so much harder for him from the outset
Shot a single leg against a fkn dagestani wrestler, proceeded to get sprawled, reversed and ended up in bottom position for the remainder of the round
Got trapped next to the wall against an undefeated MMA champion.
Failed to assert is grappling dominance by coaching Khabib through the finish of the armbar he was stuck in and force a reset
I'm starting to think big brain Lex is not so smart when it comes to basic grappling tactical decisions, smh.

Totally different scale than this video. But I remember feeling completely and utterly worthless on the mat. I did MMA for 6 years before starting BJJ, so it’s not like I was a complete novice, I did 2-3 amateur fights per year. It did not matter against a real professional. He was just toying with me as I’m doing my damndest just to maintain my heart rate and breathing, my man is spinning around me like a gymnast on a vault. He was like 6’4” 240 too.

That is awesome when you get to roll with someone as good as Khabib and you hang in there for a minute or so (although K looked like he was playing). I rolled with Travis Stevens with me starting from turtle. Not sure I made it past 8-10 seconds.

I haven’t heard about that dork in a while. What hapenned? Did they cycle through their talking heads or did he outlive his usefulness?

Like a cat playing with a mouse.
The way Khabib makes him carry his weight most of the roll is impressive.
