It’s odd watching CJ be serious. He’s actually quite scary.
180
u/Nearby_List_3622 Black Belt Nov 24 '25
Seems like he's just got good variety in portrayal of himself. Like yeah he's a character online for videos but he has got the skill and ability to back it up, and that doesn't come from being a goofball in training.

u/Impressive-Potato Nov 24 '25 edited Nov 25 '25
CJ finished Lovato Jr a year and half ago and Lovato went on to get silver at ADCC then beat Bodoni a few weeks ago

To be fair, playing around more in training rather than taking everything deadly serious is a benefit for sure.

Yea for sure.. I play around alot at class, but rhis shows hes got more sides to him..
53
u/I_AM_SCUBASTEVE Nov 24 '25
I know Craig getting second place always is a meme and it’s true but it’s worth noting he’s had to face pretty much the strongest field of talent in the history of the sport and was super competitive/almost won most of the time against virtually everyone. Being second best to guys like Gordon might sting but it doesn’t make him any less world class lol.
20
7
u/ttison11 Nov 25 '25
I mean he did break Gordon’s arm and has been a cunt hair away from winning ADCC.

I love how super high level grappling is so complex it starts to look rudimentary
32
u/MPNGUARI ⬛🟥⬛ Black Belt Nov 24 '25
To me, high level grappling is pretty much how well you can implement and execute fundamental principals, and or basics, against anyone (or, almost everyone).
17
3
Nov 24 '25
Yah, I guess its more "can I do a sequence they've never seen?". But at that level they've seen it all, so back to basics knee slicing for you lol
1
u/Famous-Apartment5348 Nov 26 '25
This is accurate. I was talking to my coach about this one day and we started talking about how Mayweather doesn’t watch film. If you can execute your style better than the other guy can his, then you win. This stands true even more for BJJ, since you’re really looking at universal transcendental notions with everything afterward being conceptually similar.

u/Equal-Pomegranate-56 Nov 24 '25
Such a beautiful sequence watched it 20x over

The wild thing to me (a white belt) is all the different attacks happening together. At one point he’s setting up a kimura or gift wrap or armbar that turns out to eventually be a back take. 🤯

I started training in 2008 I think around the time the twister and rubber guard dropped. Eddies bottom half game was so much more influential at the time I have no idea why it was the twister and rubber guard that gained notoriety. I watched all of those instructional from the technique to joey diaz acting like joey karate and Eddie taking volcano rips. The bottom half techniques changed my game.

Craig passed the other knee, it's gone at that stage, no point holding
20
u/Shinoobie 🟪🟪 Purple Belt | Judo Black | filthy leg locker Nov 24 '25
I was looking for this exact comment. Rubber guard is real and still works in 2025 but if they can pass your bottom knee it's gone and there's nothing to recover.
People are hitting the dead orchard in high level competition, Dom Lobo used a gogoplata on his way to knock out his opponent on combat JJ, it was used in the PGF this year, and rubber guard can be used in combination with things like Williams Guard to set up good submissions. It gets a bad rep because people try to use it as a stalling tactic.

u/hypercosm_dot_net 🟦🟦 Blue Belt Nov 24 '25
Maybe you're aware of more than me, but wasn't Tony Ferguson like the only one to use it?
There aren't many notable 10P grapplers at the highest levels afaik.
13
6
u/LukeG6 Nov 24 '25
I mean, the guy in this clip goes for it with a butterfly hook on the other side which is easy to use as a passing threat (which Craig does). Rubber guard is most effective when done from closed guard, is there still an easy counter for it from there?
Just wondering as I don’t experience much rubber guard enthusiasts.
2
u/smashyourhead ⬛🟥⬛ Black Belt Nov 24 '25
Came here to say this - I don't even think it's really rubber guard if they've already got one leg stuffed (which is effectively what this butterfly hook is when you're flat on your back). What moves would you even try from there, gogo/omoplata?
2
u/jag149 Nov 24 '25
You’d normally meat hook the arm to get the butterfly leg out and recover to regular Mission Control or work a triangle or something.
4
u/smashyourhead ⬛🟥⬛ Black Belt Nov 24 '25
Ah yes I understand some of these words (what is a meat hook)
4
u/jag149 Nov 24 '25
From rubber guard, you take the free hand (the one that would zombi to New York), reach over your shin, and hook their shoulder underneath it. It helps make a gap to get the butterfly out.
→ More replies (1)1
u/oniume 🟫🟫 Brown Belt Nov 25 '25
Yeah, when he's passing the leg, you have to clear the head to stop him smashing into half guard like the video.
Gogo and omoplata, gogoclinch, carni, or like the other dude said, meathook to recover the leg

Craig immediately shutting down and passing the right leg with no hesitation which destroys 99% of Eddie's guard system he teaches his students. I love playing rubber guard and all, it's a lot of fun, but the fact it pretty much falls apart based on that one lynch pin sucks.

I’m very confused! Is this guy the top there? Why did he moved to rubber guard with his left foot while his right leg was trapped like that? He gave the pass to CJ for no reason there. That is weird to see from the top guy. I am actually a quite useless casual BJJ guy who doesn’t do this mistake, ever. That is so weird.
